Obi’s Promise Of One-term Presidency Cannot Be Trusted – Presidency

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday May 14, 2026, cast doubts over the possibility of Peter Obi honouring his one-term presidency pledge.

The Source reports that the former Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate in an interview with News Central on Thursday, reaffirmed his earlier promise to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

According to the former Anambra State Governor, the pledge to serve one tenure is in deference to the unwritten power sharing formula between the Northern and Southern parts of the country.

With President Bola Tinubu already serving the first tenure  of the Southern two-term of eight years, Obi and his new political nest, the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, have assured of respecting the power rotation arrangement.

In a viral clip of the News Central Interview, Obi who alongside the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, penultimate Sunday,  joined forces with the NDC, insisted that he will only serve one tenure, even if a gun is pointed to his head.

“Even with a gun to my head, I will not remain in office more than four years”, Obi stated.

But in a statement issued on his official site on Thursday, Onanuga  dismissed Obi’s pledge of one term, noting that the assurance is not in tandem with what he called” the inconsistent political history of the former LP Presidential flag bearer.

According to him, Obi’s promise is not a true reflection of his  unstable political allegiances.

” If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as President, you will believe anything.

“Peter Obi’s pledges have always been short-lived . He ultimately abandoned APGA for the PDP, and since then, he has drifted from one political platform to another – a political rolling stone.

“By his own words, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted. His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances”, the Presidential spokesperson added.

Baba-Ahmed Lied, Obi, Kwankwaso Never Made Any Demand From Him Or PRP – Kwankwasiyya Movement

The Kwankwasiyya Movement  has described the claims made by the National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, concerning the botched alignment talks with Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as a mere attention-seeking strategy.

The Source reports that  Baba-Ahmed, in a recent interview with the DITV Kaduna, had claimed that a proposed alignment between the PRP and the duo of Obi and Kwankwaso could not sail through owing to the conditionalities attached by the two former Presidential candidates.

According to the PRP National Chairman ,the two had demanded an automatic presidential ticket of the party as a necessary pre-condition to join.

“They came and said they wanted to join the PRP, but when we sat down and discussed with them, there were certain demands they made.

“They wanted an assurance that they will secure the party’s Presidential ticket without internal contest”, Baba-Ahmed stated .

Baba-Ahmed claimed that the PRP’s rejection of the demand, eventually led to the collapse of the alignment talks.

But responding to the claims, Dr Habibu Sale, the spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, insisted that there were  no formal alignment talks known to the Movement between the PRP and the duo of Obi and Kwankwaso.

According to him, besides the informal contacts made by several parties trying to woo Obi and Kwankwaso as well as other opposition figures, there were no official alignment discussions between the PRP and the two leaders.

He emphasized that following the compelling need for an alternative platform in the face of the challenges and uncertainties surrounding the fate of the opposition camp, several parties, including the PRP, explored the possibilities of alignment with opposition figures.

But Sale maintained that there were no formal alignment meetings to discuss or put forward any demands.

“To us, there is no evidence that Peter Obi and Kwankwaso sat down and discussed moving into the PRP.

“We know that the PRP itself,  like the NDC, tried to reach out not only to Peter Obi and Kwankwaso, but to all coalition forces, especially during the period when the crisis in the ADC became apparent.

“There were no formal sittings that warranted any requests or conditions being put forward by my principal.”, he noted.

While dismissing Baba-Ahmed’s claims, the Kwankwasiyya Movement spokesperson emphasized that the PRP does not have the structural strength to warrant such demands from the opposition camp.

“At this point in time, the PRP is not a party that can boast of being formidable enough to warrant Kwankwaso and Obi making such demands”, Sale added.

The Kwara State Government has projected to benefit from Nigeria’s rapidly expanding livestock economy projected to grow from an estimated $32 billion to over $70 billion in the coming years.

Commissioner for Livestock Development, Oloruntoyosi Thomas, disclosed this while delivering a keynote address at the 2026 Press Week of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council.

Speaking on the theme, “Livestock Development in a Changing Economy: Innovation, Opportunities and the Role of Strategic Communication in National Growth,” Thomas described livestock as one of the most promising sectors capable of driving economic transformation, industrialization and job creation in Nigeria.

According to her, the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is deliberately moving beyond subsistence animal production into a fully commercialized and industrialized livestock economy through strategic investments and policy interventions.

She said the government’s goals include improving productivity, strengthening livestock value chains, encouraging private investment, reducing imports and positioning Nigeria competitively in the global livestock market.

Thomas explained that the state is leveraging projects such as the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (LPRES) and the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) to drive commercialization.

She added that the SAPZ initiative would provide critical infrastructure such as roads, power, cold storage facilities, abattoirs, veterinary clinics, artificial insemination centres, cargo facilities and residential accommodation for investors and processors.

“This is not accidental. It reflects leadership, foresight and a clear understanding that the future of Nigeria’s economy lies in productive sectors capable of generating sustainable wealth and employment,” she said.

The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, has affirmed that traditional medicine is effective and affordable to buy.

He has, therefore, pushed for the integration of traditional medicine with the modern (orthodox) medicine for the enhancement of virile healthcare delivery, before the exit of traditional medical practitioners.

His advice was contained in a statement issued and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Olugbemiga Ayoade, shortly after a courtesy visit by the executive members of Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Oyo State branch.

According to Oba Ladoja, the use of traditional medicine was not only effective, but also accessible and affordable.

“I believe in the efficacy of the traditional medicine, its accessibility and affordability,” Olubadan said.

Earlier in his speech, the chairman of PSN, Oyo State branch, Colonel Victor Segun Ajanaku (rtd.), said members were at the palace to pay congratulatory visit to Oba Ladoja on his ascension to the throne of his forefathers and to show the appreciation of members on many achievements recorded within the short period by the monarch.

According to the chairman, they were also at the palace to inform the monarch of the pharmacists’ storey building built in Ibadan “which is the first of its kind in Nigeria.”

He added that Olubadan was being formally invited to commission the building on 21st May, 2026.

Also, the pharmacists requested for the permission of Oba Ladoja to have a medical outreach at Olubadan palace, Oke-Aremo,  later in the year as was their practice annually.

How The Media Prevented Investigation Into Dele Giwa’s Death – IBB

Ibrahim Babangida - IBB

By Ayodele Oni

General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), former Military President, has stated that he was surprised that the Oputa panel on human and civil rights did not unravel the killers of late Dele Giwa.

The Oputa Panel (Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission) was established on June 14, 1999, by fmr. President Olusegun Obasanjo, shortly after his inauguration.

It was created to investigate gross human rights violations that occurred under military regimes between January 15, 1966, and May 28, 1999.

In his latest published autobiography, the former military ruler maintained that he knew nothing about late Dele Giwa’s assassination.

“When the Obasanjo civilian administration reopened the Giwa case at the Oputa Panel on Human and Civil Rights, I expected that the police and lawyers would come forward with new evidence as to their findings on the Giwa murder over the years. Nothing of such happened.

“The Giwa, like all mysterious murders, has remained unsolved after so many years. I keep hoping the truth will be uncovered in our lifetime or after us. More often than not, mysterious crimes are solved long after their commission.”

Giwa, the founding editor-in-chief of Newswatch Magazine, was killed by a parcel bomb at his Ikeja residence on October 19, 1986.

Babangida was head of state from 1985 to 1993. He “stepped aside” after annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

The Cable, quoting from In ‘A Journey In Service’, his newly-released autobiography, IBB denied his involvement in the death of Giwa, adding that the late journalist was “a good friend whose deep insight on national issues I valued”.

“The novelty and tragic impact of the incident badly shook the nation. I was equally shocked by it all. On a personal level, I had just lost a friend. Mr Giwa was a good friend, like a few other senior journalists in the country.

“We spoke often on the phone and met a few times. I valued his deep insight on national issues and respected his views and reach as a media leader.

“My sense of loss was, however, overwhelmed by the public outcry and the feeling of tragedy in the introduction of an entirely novel mode of killing in our country.

“Coming a few weeks after the OIC crisis, which led to the retirement of my number two, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, I saw Giwa’s wicked and cruel mūrder as part of a series of booby traps and acts of destabilisation being hatched against the administration.

“I tried to understand the implications of what had just happened by making sense of it. I analysed and tried to interpret the incident first at a personal level.

“Whoever was the mastermind knew my relationship with Giwa and a few senior journalists.

“Hitting at Giwa would get to me emotionally. Secondly, Giwa was a very popular and colourful journalist, a person of great public interest for anyone wanting to inflict a mischievous political blow on the young military administration.

“Giwa was loved by his audience and the rest of the public. Targeting him would shock the public and paint the administration in a feeble light.

“Much as this incident rattled me, I also accepted and understood it to be part of the challenges of the task I had taken on.

“I was responsible for acting in the public interest, but only in the context of the institutions and mechanisms of government.”

On government effort to investigate the incident, Babangida stated “the hysteria of the media did not help the investigation of the Giwa murder.

“As is typical of the Nigerian media, the direction was marked by an adversarial attitude towards government, which has remained the hallmark of the Nigerian media from its colonial heydays.

“It was an attitude of ‘we versus the government’ that has remained today. It is a situation in which the government is adjudged guilty even before the evidence in a case is adduced.”

Senatorial Ticket: Ogun Govt Slams Daniel, Says He Has Lost Relevance

Otunba Gbenga Daniel
Ogun State Government has criticized a former governor of the state, Gbenga Daniel over the political developments in the state, particularly the emergence of Governor Dapo Abiodun as the consensus All Progressives Congress, APC senatorial candidate for Ogun East.

Governor Abiodun had emerged two weeks ago after a meeting by some party leaders in the state.

Since then, Senator Daniel has criticized the process that threw up the governor, saying it was not transparent.

Recall that Senator Daniel had accused the party officials of shutting him out of the venue where the governor was picked as the consensus APC candidate for Ogun East in the 2027 election.

Reacting in a statement issued on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, said Senator Daniel had once emerged through the process that he’s now criticizing.

The governor’s aide urged senator Daniel to stop peddling falsehood about the governor, describing the former governor as a drowning mam, with a declining political relevance and influence in the ruling APC.

“Daniel is simply fighting the same consensus arrangement and party structure that produced him as Senator in 2023. It is shocking that someone who benefited immensely from the collective decision of the party is now demonising the same process simply because it no longer aligns with his personal ambition,” Akinmade stated.

Senator Daniel is criticizing the same consensus arrangement which he rode on to the National Assembly in 2023, adding that the former governor is now demonising the APC and Governor Abiodun because he failed to have his way this time around, Akinmade said.

Lagos Govt Counters JAMB Cut-off Mark

The Lagos State Government has rejected the 150 minimum cut-off mark approved by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB,  for university admissions.
The Babajide SanwoOlu-led government said candidates seeking to be admitted into its state-owned universities must score at least 185 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, made the remark on Wednesday during a ministerial press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa as part of activities marking the third year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

According to Sule, the cut-off mark approved by JAMB was too low for Lagos State universities and did not reflect the educational standards expected in the state.

Lagos Reporters gathered that the Lagos State Government is determined to maintain what it described as quality admission standards across its tertiary institutions despite the national benchmark announced by JAMB.

“To us in Lagos State, the cut-off marks approved by JAMB look too low for our universities. None of our three universities is admitting any student who scored below 185 in the UTME,” the commissioner stated.

He explained that although JAMB’s decision was intended to accommodate candidates across the country’s six geo-political zones, Lagos could not lower its standards to align with states facing educational challenges.

“For JAMB to announce 150 as the cut-off mark out of the 400 obtainable marks in the UTME for this year’s admission seekers is very low,” Sule said.

Sule stressed that Lagos should not be classified among educationally disadvantaged states, adding that the state would continue to maintain higher academic standards in its admission process.

“Lagos cannot be considered educationally disadvantaged to the extent of bringing its cut-off mark down to meet what Sokoto or Zamfara State requires,” he added.

The magazine recalls that the Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, in Abuja, on Monday disclosed that 150 is this cut off mark for gaining admission into tertiary institutions in the country this year.

The development signals that admission seekers into Lagos-owned tertiary institutions may face stricter entry requirements despite JAMB’s national benchmark for the 2026 admission exercise.

Two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, have been killed by suspected Lakurawa terrorist elements in  Kebbi State.

The operatives were killed during an attack on a  security check point in Gendene Community, Bagudu Local Council, in the wee hours of Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

The terrorists were said to have struck at about 3.00 am, opening fire on the officers on duty.

According to local witness accounts, the terrorists set one of the victims on fire, and watched him burn to death.

Similarly, the attackers also razed operational vehicles belonging to the Service before departing the scene.

“The attackers came in the early hours of Wednesday, and launched the attack unexpectedly.

“One of the officers was trapped in the fire after the terrorists set the make-shift structure he was sleeping on fire”, a local witness volunteered.

Confirming the unfortunate incident, the Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, described it as deeply painful.

Adeniyi, who spoke in Ilorin while delivering a keynote at the fourth biennial international conference organized by the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, of the University of Ilorin informed that the  slain officers- Assistant Superintendent of Customs, ASC Bamigboye, and Deputy Superintendent of Customs, DSC Dom, were killed during a counter-offensive operation against the terrorists.

“This morning, two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service paid the supreme sacrifice while warding off threats from Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbi state”, Adeniyi stated .

He said that the Service remains a critical factor in the fight against insecurity particularly in the border communities, in collaboration with the military.”, he added.

He emphasized that he could have shelved his trip to Ilorin if he had received the news of the tragic incident before leaving for Ilorin.

This was as he assured that the death of the officers rather than weaken the fight against criminal networks, will spur the Service into upscaling the campaign.

I Remain An APC Member, Says Gov Fubara

0
Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Despite the alleged shabby treatment believed to have been meted on him, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, has reaffirmed his unflinching commitment and unalloyed loyalty to the All Progressive Congress, APC.

The Source reports that about 32 aspirants sponsored by the Governor Fubara to the House of Assembly,  were last weekend disqualified by the Screening Committee in  rather hazy circumstances.

The Committee, in its report of the exercise conducted between Saturday May 9 and Sunday May 10, 2026, disqualified about 56 aspirants out of the initial 98 that obtained nomination forms.

Conversely, 33 aspirants believed to have been backed by Governor Fubara’s estranged godfather, Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, were cleared for the contest, thus sparking widespread debate on the fate of the Governor in his new political abode.

Wike who is still a member of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has vowed not to allow his estranged political godson a second term in office, noting that doing so will amount to signing his own political obituary.

The FCT Minister has equally maintained that a critical condition of the presidential truce brokered between the two was that Fubara will not be seeking a second term in office.

Instructively, Governor Fubara, last week Sunday, had angrily stormed out of  the Abuja venue of the APC Screening Committee, following what insiders attributed to the refusal of the Committee to screen him based on his perceived agreement with Wike.

The APC had, equally, before now, leaned towards the side of the FCT Minister, following its refusal to formally receive Governor Fubara into its fold, a gesture which had been accorded to his defecting colleagues, including those who joined the party after he had joined.

The open show of disrespect and disregard  by the APC has expectedly accentuated speculations suggesting that Fubara, even though the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC’s defection window  ended on May 10, may be considering finding solace in another party.

But speaking on Wednesday during an inspection tour of some project sites, including the remodeled Rivers state Psychiatric Hospital in Rumuigbo, Obio/Akpor Local Council of the state, Governor Fubara debunked claims suggesting that he may be on his way out of APC.

He dismissed such reports and interpretations on the social as not only false and unfounded, but not a true reflection of his position.

“I am a member of the All Progressive Congress, and nothing has changed.

“People should stop using whatever situation they pick up from the social media ,or their personal interpretations, to present me wrongly. I have not gone anywhere. I remain a member.of the APC”, Fubara stated.
