BUA Founder Rabiu: How South Africa Denied Me Entry Into The Country But Allowed  Europeans

By Adesina Soyooye

Current Africa’s second richest man, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has narrated how he faced humiliation and inexplicable discrimination in South Africa for no other reason other than being a black man, and perhaps, a Nigerian.

Rabiu is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the BUA Group.

He narrated the story of his embarrassment on Thursday while presenting his paper Africa at scale: Capital, policy, and the architecture of growth at the ongoing Africa CEO Forum held in Kigali Rwanda.

According to Rabiu, the incident occurred in February of 2025 when he travelled to Cape Town from Lagos for the Mining Indaba. He said that he arrived the Airport, unknowingly, with an expired visa and was asked to go back. He was refused entry and turned back by the Immigration Officers over his visa. He took responsibility for his expired visa. But his shock and humiliation were complete when European travellers who arrived the Airport  with the same problem of expired visas were allowed in.

But, in his case, he was left stranded at the Airport for hours, and, finally, returned to Lagos  while the “Whites” (with same problem) were cleared to enter South Africa.

His words: “I had a personal experience. Last year February, I was travelling to Cape Town for the Mining Indaba. I left at night from Lagos to Cape Town. We arrived at 6 in the morning.

“As we arrived, we went to the immigration, I tendered my passport, and the immigration officer looked at it and was like, ‘where is your visa?’ And I said: ‘My visa is there.’ Unknown to me, my visa had expired the day before.

“Unfortunately, our crew did not check the visa to ensure the visas were valid. We were there for four hours, but at end of the day, I had to turn back. I was turned back to Lagos.

“But the issue is this: While we were waiting to see whether we would be able to get access to the country without the visas, there were like three international flights from Europe. All three flights were mostly Europeans.

“I was standing there by the immigration desk, and every passenger on those three flights went into Cape Town without any visa.

“I do not have a problem with the fact that I was there without the visa and I was returned. I took full responsibility of that.

“I had an issue with being an African in Africa, being turned away because I do not have a visa, and foreigners from other continents were coming in and were allowed to enter without a visa. This must change.”

Rabiu’s narration of his experience came at a time when South Africans are harassing, persecuting and killing other Africans, especially Nigerians, and ordering them out of their country, insisting that they have taken over their jobs, and, for some, unbelievably, their girlfriends!

Makinde’s Presidential Ambition Dead On Arrival- Wike

Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has slammed Governor Seyi over his presidential ambition, saying the idea is dead on arrival.
The Minister also dismissed the supposed alliance between the Makinde-led Peoples Democratic party and the APM, describing the action as a ‘419’.
Wike, made the remark during the inspection of ongoing road projects in Gomani-Yangoji, Kwali Area Council, Abuja, saying the alliance is fraudulent and unknown to the authority, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC which he said  had no knowledge about the alliance.
Governor Makinde had, on Thursday declared his presidential ambition under the APM, saying he the PDP faction under his control has formed an alliance with the APM ahead the 2027 election.
The Minister, however, describe Governor Makinde as fraud saying the PDP has not formed any alliance with either APM or any other political parties in the country, noting that the PDP will soon announce its own presidential candidate to Nigerians.
He stressed that Governor Makinde presidential ambition is dead on arrival.
Wike: “When I say people are fraudulent, they think I am joking. And that is the 419 we are talking about.
“There is no alliance between PDP and Allied Peoples Movement or any other political party, as the case may be. INEC also knows that there is nothing called a PDP-APM alliance.
“What you have is Seyi Makinde joining APM to be able to actualise his presidential ambition, which is already dead on arrival.”
Wike, the magazine recalls has vowed to support President Tinubu in the 2027 election.

Gbajabiamila: Tinubu Almost Sacked Me Because Of Desmond Elliot

0
Femi Gbajabiamila

Finally, the reason why Desmond Elliot, Nollywood Actor-turned Politician, is being denied a return to the Lagos State House of Assembly has been revealed.

It is not because he is seeking a record fourth-time return. It is because he miscalculated in the affairs of the Assembly, and backed the wrong  horse.

Making this public for the first time, his political godfather, Femi Gbajabiamila, who is, also, the

Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu further disclosed  how he almost lost his job in the Presidency because of Elliot’s alleged involvement in the 2025 Lagos State House of Assembly crisis which led to the short-lived impeachment of Mudasiru Obasa, the Speaker of this Assembly.

Elliot is the Lawmaker representing Surulere 1 State Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Gbajabiamila spoke on Thursday during  a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, where he pointedly accused Elliot of involvement in Obasa’s January 2025 impeachment.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives said his job was put on the line because of Elliot involvement in the impeachment saga, saying his closeness to President Tinubu was what saved him from being sacked.

Recall that  Speaker Obasa’s impeachment was aborted following the intervention of Presidential Tinubu, who ordered members of the Assembly to reverse their action.

Eliot was among the Lawmakers who spearheaded that impeachment, Gbajabiamila said, adding that even when he called Elliot to back-off, the Lawmaker failed to listen to him.

According to Gbajabiamila, President Tinubu had called him to a meeting where he broached the issue and later ordered him to call Elliot to “order” over his support for Obasa’s impeachment.

He explained that the Surulere lawmaker refused to listen to him, and stated that people thought he, Gbajabiamila, was part of the impeachment plot because Elliot is his political godson.

He stressed that he defended Elliot not knowing that the Lawmaker was neck deep in the plot to impeach Obasa.

“I almost lost my job because of Desmond Elliot last year. You can go and verify. The President invited me to his residence in Abuja during the Obasa saga and confronted me over reports linking Elliot to the crisis, ”  he said.

“Mr President called me to his study in Abuja and said, ‘I hear this Desmond is your boy.’ I said, ‘Yes, sir.’ He then said Desmond was among those causing problems in the Lagos State House of Assembly,” he stated.

Gbajabiamila said he defended the lawmaker without knowing that Elliot was involved in the plot.

“I told the President that Desmond was not part of them, but the President insisted and told me to call him to order,” he added.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives further disclosed that shortly after the meeting, he contacted Elliot and warned him to steer clear of the crisis.

“Three days later, the Director-General called me and said there was a serious issue, that my name was everywhere as the person supporting Desmond to push for impeachment,” he said.

A couple of days ago, Elliot had issued a public apology to Gbajabiamila without saying exactly what he did wrong. The apology came when he confirmed that the rug has been pulled from under his feet and that another has been anointed in his place.

Governor Hope Uzodimma has urged aspirants from Imo State seeking tickets for the Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly under the All Progressives Congress (APC) to embrace loyalty, discipline and sacrifice ahead of the Party primaries that kicks off Friday, May 15, 2026.

Speaking during a meeting with aspirants, leaders and stakeholders of the Party in Imo State Thursday, May 14, 2026 at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Owerri, Uzodimma described politics as “not a lottery but a game of courage,” stressing that “some people will win and some will not.”

The Governor who warned against desperation, urged aspirants to remain committed to the Party before, during and after the primaries.

“There is a need for loyalty to the Party. That is what our partisan democracy requires,” he said.

Even though Uzodimma acknowledged that political contestation could be akin to a game, he warned aspirants to weigh all the risks before throwing their hats in the ring, warning, “don’t use the money meant for your children’s school fees to buy form if you cannot bear the risk.”

He also called for respect for zoning and equity principles, noting that the Party would adopt Option A4 voting system in the primaries to ensure transparency and avoid accusations of favoritism where consensus did not work.

As a guide for a successful and rancour-free exercise, Uzodimma advised aspirants and stakeholders to respect equity and rotation formula where such exists in their communities, and assured that the APC Committee for the conduct of Primaries as well as Appeal Committee have also been set up to deal with the exercise and handle grievances arising from the primaries.

The Governor regretted that the number of aspirants to the different office was quite large hence the need for reason to apply in ensuring that the primaries are conducted in a manner that it will turn out to be a win win situation for the State and the Party.

“We don’t want Imo State to go back to Egypt,” he added.

The State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Austin Onyedebelu reaffirmed the Party’s commitment to unity, reconciliation, and electoral success ahead of future elections.

He said the State Executive Committee had taken steps to reposition the Party for “greater efficiency, unity and service.”

Onyedebelu acknowledged grievances arising from Party primaries but said reconciliation mechanisms had been activated to ensure harmony among members.

He used the opportunity to commend Uzodimma for approving the construction of a new state-of-the-art APC Secretariat, describing it as a lasting legacy for the Party in Imo State, while he praised the Governor for the feat achieved in infrastructure development of the State.

Senators Osita Izunaso, Patrick Ndubueze and Ezenwa Onyewuchi took turns to speak on behalf of aspirants to the Senate to align with the laid down principles of the Party and pledged unwavering loyalty to the APC leadership at both State and National levels.

Others who spoke include, Rt. Hon Princess Miriam Onuoha and Rt. Hon Amara Iwuanyanwu for aspirants to the House of Representatives and House of Assembly respectively, while Prince Lemmy Akakem spoke on behalf of leaders of the Party.

All pledged to accept and support “whatever decision the Party takes” in the interest of the members. They also pledged their unalloyed loyalty and confidence in the leadership of Governor Uzodimma regarding the Imo APC.

Chike Olemgbe, former Deputy Governors – Lady Ada Okwuonu, Prof Placid Njoku and Sir Jude Agbaso; the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmos Iwu, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr. Fresh $1.25 Billion World Bank Loan: Tinubu Running A Ponzi Economy – ADC

0

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, on Thursday May 14, 2026, expressed renewed concern over what it described as the growing level of Nigeria’s cumulative public debt profile.

This is as the opposition Coalition platform accused President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government of running a ” ponzi economy” using fresh loans to service old ones .

The party, in a statement issued by Bolaji Abdullahi, its spokesperson, expressed shock that the All Progressive Congress APC-led Federal Government has moved to secure a fresh $1.25 billion World Bank loan, despite the already precarious debt situation  of the country.

According to the  ADC, Nigeria’s public debt has hit the alarming threshold of about N159.28 trillion, with inflationary gap hitting the rooftop.

The party equally raised concern that trillions of Naira which should have been channeled into the provisions of good roads, hospitals, electricity, and adequate security, are now being expended on debit servicing.

The ADC, also, described as even more worrisome the speed and scale of the borrowing, noting that the Tinubu administration since inception has secured multiple World Bank facilities and other loans running into several billions of dollars.

The party emphasized that these multiple loans have regrettably brought about an ugly and disturbing situation where the country, according to the Tinubu administration’s projection will be spending a whopping $11.6 billion in debt servicing in 2026 alone.

“The African Democratic Congress, ADC, is deeply alarmed by the Tinubu administration’s latest move to seek another fresh $1.25 World Bank loan, coming barely weeks after the National Assembly approved yet another round of external borrowing running into billions of dollars.

“At this point, Nigerians must ask a simple question: if this Government keeps borrowing trillions of naira every few months, why are Nigerians getting poorer, and why is life getting harder for the majority?

“Today, Nigeria’s total public debt has risen to about N159.28 trillion, yet food prices continue to rise daily, electricity tariffs are increasing, the Naira remains weak, businesses are shutting down, insecurity is spreading, and millions of young Nigerians remain unemployed.

“Families are cutting down meals, manufacturers are struggling to survive and small businesses are collapsing under the weight of inflation and poor economic conditions.

” This is why the ADC says the Tinubu administration is running a ponzi economy where new loans are constantly being taken to service old debts, and cover fiscal failures, while Nigerians are left to carry the burden.

“It is noteworthy that President Bola Tinubu himself has declared that Nigeria will spend about $11.6 billion, over N15 trillion on debt servicing alone in 2026.

” In simple terms, Trillions of Naira that should have been gone into roads, hospitals, schools, electricity, security, agriculture, and job creation will, instead, go into paying creditors and servicing old loans.

“The Government removed fuel subsidy, devalued the Naira, increased electricity tariffs, and imposed painful economic policies on citizens, promising that temporary sacrifice would lead to long-term recovery.

“Some of the loans are ostensibly obtained to cushion the impacts of these harsh policies. Instead, Nigerians have continued to suffer one of the worst cost-of-living crises in recent history, while the Government continues to pile on more debts” the ADC stated.

The party expressed disappointment that the National Assembly, in the midst of the reckless borrowings, has remained complicit, rubber- stamping the mounting debt profile.

The party warned that Nigeria cannot continue to mortgage the future of unborn generations simply to service the gluttonous appetite of the the present administration.

“At some point, somebody will pay for all these borrowings and, sadly, ordinary Nigerians are already paying through hunger, inflation, unemployment, business closures and a collapsing standard of living”, ADC added.

By Ayodele Oni

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 Presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

He made the declaration on Thursday during a political rally held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, amid growing political realignments in the State, following internal divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, Excellency, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he stated.

Makinde, maintained that the time has come  to reset Nigeria.

The mega-rally also witnessed an alliance between the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) and the Allied Peoples’ Movement, (APM).

The governor, who expressed worry over the dwindling fortunes of Nigerians, said it was time for the people to engage the system and not stand by as spectators.

He said: “Without a multi-party system, there is no democracy. Where is our multi-party? “Where do we go from here?

“We have been pushed to the wall. The calculated and self opposition cannot unite, but I am here to say that the opposition is the everyday Nigerian.

“This is the time for all us to ensure Nigeria works for us. This is the time to confront its fears. It is time to engage as citizens and not spectators.

“For the opposition political parties, this is the time to unite and work in unity and give our nation the much reset it needs.

“The time to reset Nigeria is now. Ibadan is the city of warriors. The first grand alliance is formed.

“The PDP and APM is formed. This handshake will allow us to field candidates from presidency to State Assembly.”

The Governor, who hinted that the PDP-APM alliance will field candidates from Presidency to State House of Assembly, said: “And so, I declare my candidacy for office of the president of Nigeria.”

LAHA: Alleged Plot To Stop Desmond Elliott’s Fourth Term Bid Intensifies

0
Desmond Elliot
Hon. Desmond Elliot

By Akinwale Kasali

As Hon. Desmond  Elliott continues his campaign and bid for a fourth term ticket to the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Surulere 1 Constituency, he is allegedly having a face off with Femi Gbajabiamila, his mentor, and the Chief of Staff, CoS, to President Bola Tinubu.

This could mar his ambition, as speculations are rife that the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, already has a Candidate to replace him.

The situation has further intensified internal tensions in the All Progressives Congress, APC, fold in Surulere, with some Party stakeholders accusing the powerful blocs of undermining internal democracy through what they describe as a predetermined selection process.

Some members of the Party in Surulere are aggrieved, alleging that an arrangement is being designed to sideline the actor-turned-politician, Elliott, despite his legislative track record and backing from sections of grassroot supporters.

It was gathered that Gbajabiamila had an anointed female candidate that would be fielded to challenge Elliott at the Primaries.

Jnverified allegations from some members is that the Primary in Surulere Constituency 1 has already been skewed in favour of the female aspirant.

It was also alleged by the aggrieved members who are mostly Youths, that the Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Sharif Balogun, has declared support for the anointed Female Candidate and directed Ward Leaders and Party executives to mobilise in her favour.

One of the aggrieved members who craved anonymity insisted that his concern was fairness within the Party, warning against any form of imposition.

“Nobody should act like a god in Surulere politics. The misuse of power must stop. Party members should be allowed to freely choose their candidate,” he said.

He further alleged that some political appointees and loyalists were being pressured to support the preferred aspirant, and claimed that threats were being used against those who refuse.

“They are intimidating people, especially those holding offices, saying that if you don’t support this woman, your appointment may be taken away,” he alleged.

According to him, there is no genuine consensus arrangement in the Surulere APC, alleging instead that the party structure has been directed to work for the emergence of the Female aspirant.

The development has reignited debate over Elliott’s political future in the Lagos State House of Assembly where he is seeking a fourth term.

While critics question his performance, supporters maintain that opposition to his re-election is driven more by internal politics than by his legislative record.

They argue that another term would strengthen his position within the Assembly and potentially qualify him for leadership roles.

The ongoing political crisis in the area has further revived broader discussions around godfatherism and political succession in Surulere politics, particularly the influence of Gbajabiamila.

Some members of the Party are of the opinion that if Gbajabiamila is allowed extended representation of the Constituency, it would be unjust to deny Elliott similar political continuity.

Recall that a group under the aegis of Surulere Accountability Forum, SAF,a Coalition of Stakeholders in Surulere,  had described Elliott’s time at the Lagos State House of Assembly as disappointing.

Badmus Olanrewaju, spokesperson for the Coalition had said, “Surulere has paid the price for that decision for 11 years. The constituency was handed over to someone who was never part of our political structure and has consistently failed to justify the confidence reposed in him. We voted for Desmond Elliot because of pleas from Gbajabiamila in the past, now Gbajabiamila should know we cannot afford a fourth-term experiment in failure.

“What are his accomplishments as a member of the state House of Assembly representing Surulere? He only reaps the benefits of Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila’s outstanding work in Surulere”, the Group said.

He further stressed that If the APC truly wants to win elections in Surulere, it must stop the imposition of failure on our people.

“The rejection of Desmond Elliot is now broad and emphatic – from Bank Olemo to Olawale Dawodu to Iponri, Masha and several other communities, residents are united in saying: ‘enough is enough”.

The aggrieved Party members who want Elliott to be given another term quashed the statement by the Surulere Accountability Forum, alleging that they are being sponsored.

Reacting to his rejection by the Surulere Accountability Forum, SAF, Elliott shared a video highlighting several initiatives tied to his work in Surulere Constituency I after questions arose about his effectiveness during his first three terms in the state assembly.

“I know propaganda and negativity sell, but somehow the truth must be told my dedication to my wonderful people in Surulere has and will always be 100”, he wrote.

He has also publicly apologized to Gbajabiamila for anyway he angered him and pleaded foe firgiveness.

OPINION: Does it Matter to Africa if Nigel Farage Comes to Number 10?

0
Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

The next British general election is in 2029, but you could already feel the tremor from the Council election of May 7.

The surge of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK Party is the clearest warning sign yet that Prime Minister Keir Starmer is living on borrowed time. The Labour Party is divided, its influence weakened, and Starmer’s days in Number 10 are numbered.

Yet it was only two years ago that Labour won a historic landslide victory after 14 years of a Conservative Party government consumed by Brexit turmoil, inflation, scandals, NHS pressures, and leadership chaos.

Although some suggested at the time that Labour’s victory was more apparent than real, meaning, for example, that it won a large number of parliamentary seats but a smaller percentage of the votes, it didn’t matter. Labour had been reborn.

What happened?

What now? The rejection of the Conservative Party did not equal enthusiasm for Labour. Starmer’s Labour became what it was not to win, and Farage’s Reform exploited the void, targeting messages around immigration, national identity, elite distrust, economic frustration, and the anger at “London politics.”

To make matters worse, those who voted for Brexit have quickly forgotten that Britain hasn’t finished paying the price.

Also, the two-party system is under severe strain, and working-class voters, once Labour’s bastion, are becoming more politically fluid. Apart from Reform, smaller parties such as the Greens and Liberal Democrats have also benefited from the voter insurgency, leading to growing calls for a change in leadership, especially within the ruling Labour Party, which has suffered the collapse of traditional Red Wall councils.

No dog in the fight

I have no dog in this fight. I’m concerned, however, that if Farage’s Reform benefits from the impending Labour chaos, Africa’s relations with Britain could be heading for a very long winter.

Farage’s history suggests so. His former classmates and teachers alleged that as a teenager, he made racist remarks, used antisemitic language, praised Hitler and mocked immigrants and ethnic minorities.

He has, of course, denied these charges, even though a 1981 letter from an English teacher reportedly urged his school headmaster to reconsider making Farage a prefect because of what she described as his alleged “racist and neo-fascist views.”

That’s not all. In April, the Reform UK home affairs spokesperson, Zia Yusuf, said that if the party came to power, it would stop issuing visas to citizens of countries seeking slavery reparations from Britain, specifically mentioning Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, Kenya and Barbados.

The UN has described the slave trade as “the gravest crime against humanity,” and called for reparations as “a concrete step towards remedying historical wrongs.” I don’t personally believe in Reparations based on slavery, because apart from stoking grievance-based politics, as Thomas Sowell argued so well, “There’s no principle by which reparations can be confined to just one group.”

A Conservative view

I chatted to Bola Adediran, a Nigerian-born Conservative Party candidate who came fourth in the last council election in Bromley, London, won by a Reform candidate. He had this to say about Farage: “His politics taps directly into these sentiments – frustration, immigration, and the rise in identity politics – and moments.

“What makes him effective is not simply his rhetoric, but his ability to position himself as the voice of the people who feel ignored by mainstream politics.”

Yet it would be an absolute disgrace for a racially bigoted twat to exploit voters’ misplaced economic and political grievances to advantage.

Demagoguery is tempting under the current global system, where the immigrant is the new scapegoat. Still, many are hoping that where guardrails failed in the US, the institutional restraints in Britain will curb the rise of a demagogue on this side of the pond.

Farage all the way?

Is Farage’s journey to Number 10 inevitable? It does look precarious, but inevitable. Precarious because the electoral system in Britain works against smaller parties. As demonstrated by his previous records in UKIP and the Brexit Party, Reform could win a high vote share but low parliamentary representation.

The party is big on headlines and the polls, but still relatively thin on structure and organisation. Other smaller parties that could work with it to form a coalition government can hardly risk Farage’s bombast or Reform’s lack of clarity on the vital issue of the economy.

Yet, I sense a certain delayed inevitability. Starmer is only kept in place by a thread of relatively weak potential immediate successors.

“Angela Rayner and Wes Streeting are the leading candidates,” Adediran told me, “but neither projects the kind of authority or broad confidence usually associated with a prime minister-in-waiting. Andy Burham may have posed a stronger alternative, but Starmer was astute enough not to encourage his return to Parliament earlier this year.” Who bells the cat?

How long, Starmer?

How long can Starmer hang on? He will not go quietly. If his scandalous appointment of Peter Mandelson as British ambassador to the US couldn’t force him to resign, perhaps only a leadership challenge will. And it’s only a matter of time before the uncoordinated, sultry calls for his resignation will coalesce into a formidable rebellion. Despite his sanctimony and confidence in a parliamentary majority that feels indebted to him, it’s improbable that Starmer will last the distance to 2029.

Farage is in a subdued rehearsal. Of the lot outside, he looks likely to be the next elected prime minister, warts and all. In the end, every country gets the leadership it deserves.

If British voters think that Farage’s demagoguery is the solution to their economic and political misery, especially the economic, they should ask US voters about life under President Donald Trump, who campaigned on “affordability” and blamed everything wrong with America on immigrants.

Restraint or not

I’ve heard that, unlike America, institutional restraints – British parliamentary democracy, the House of Lords, and the Judiciary, for example – will make it harder for a Trump-style leader to emerge in the UK. Democracies do not always fail through military coups. Sometimes they fail due to consent, fear, or elite manipulation. From Hungary to Venezuela and from Uganda to Russia and Germany, democracies have produced some of the worst dictators.

For example, a milder and less odious variety, even from Britain, was a certain Tony Blair, who joined forces with a certain George W. Bush of America to invade Iraq under the blatant lie that they were going to save the world by removing weapons of mass destruction. Blair and Bush, products of democracy, lied to themselves, their countries, and the world, evading the detection of “institutional restraints.”

Under his sleeve

Life is hard, compounded by corrupt and incompetent governments in Africa. Immigrants who abuse the hospitality of their host communities only make it harder for themselves and others. They should face the law, as it should be. History has shown repeatedly that societies rarely resolve economic problems by turning foreigners into permanent scapegoats.

Britain stands at a moment when frustration can either deepen democratic maturity or embolden grievance merchants. The choice the parties make before 2029 may not only shape Britain’s future, but also its moral relationship with Africa and the wider world.

Yobe 2027: Fmr. IGP Alkali-Baba Withdraws From Governorship Race

By Akinwale Kasali

Usman Alkali-Baba, a former Inspector General of Police, IGP, has finally withdrawn from the Yobe State Governorship Race.

The former Police Chief bowed to pressure following the endorsement of Baba Malam Wali as the All Progressives Congress, APC, Consensus Candidate for the 2027 Governorship Election in Yobe State.

Alkali Baba was part of

a group of six APC aspirants that include Senator Ibrahim Bomai, Mustapha Maihaja, Bashir Machina, Usman Baba, Kashim Musa Tumsah and Lawan Kolo Geidam, opposed to the Party’s decision to make Wali the Party’s Consensus Candidate.

Earlier, Lawan Kolo Geidam had, also, withdrawn from the contest and declared support for the consensus arrangement adopted by the party leadership.

His decision reduced the number of dissatisfied aspirants from six to five.

It, however, took the intervention of Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Party Elders and Political Stakeholders across the 17 Local Government areas of Yobe State, before the former Police Chief decided to let go.

Announcing his decision to let the Party’s decision take its cause, Alkali Baba said: “After wide consultations with Vice President Kashim Shettima, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, party elders and political stakeholders across the 17 local government areas of Yobe State, I have decided to protect unity within the APC and maintain peace and stability in the state”.

According to him, the decision was difficult but necessary for the progress of both the Party and Yobe State.

He appealed to his supporters to remain peaceful and continue backing the APC and whoever eventually emerges as the Party’s Governorship Candidate should be supported.

The remaining four aspirants who are opposed to the Party’s Consensus Candidate arrangement are Senator Ibrahim Bomai, Mustapha Maihaja, Bashir Machina and Kashim Musa Tumsah.

They said that a Primary must hold, stating that the final outcome of the Primary will be accepted.
