Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has described the idea of the state police as a landmark security reform capable of confronting insecurity across the country.
He renewed his call for the establishment of state police, describing it as an urgent and strategic solution to Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
The governor, urged greater collaboration among Northern governors, traditional rulers and the Federal Government to accelerate regional development.
Speaking on Wednesday while delivering his welcome address at the meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and the Northern States Traditional Rulers Council in Kaduna, Sani said the country’s current security realities demand a policing system that is more responsive to local needs.
He argued that with Nigeria’s vast landmass, the growing sophistication of criminal networks and the limited number of security personnel, state police would serve as a force multiplier in the fight against banditry, terrorism and kidnapping.
“The establishment of State Police in Nigeria is not only a necessity, but an urgent and strategic imperative.
“We need more boots on the ground to secure our people and our communities,” he said.
The Governor commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting the reform and praised the National Assembly for advancing the State Police Bill through the constitutional amendment process.
According to him, history will remember the President, the National Assembly, governors and other stakeholders for backing what he described as a landmark security reform capable of confronting insecurity across the country.
Sani also applauded the leadership of the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, for strengthening the forum as a platform for regional cooperation and strategic engagement.
He expressed appreciation to the President for what he described as sustained interventions in transportation, agriculture, healthcare, education, energy, infrastructure and national security, saying the Federal Government’s efforts were laying the foundation for long-term national growth and stability.
The Governor noted that although Nigeria still faces significant challenges, measurable progress has been recorded through collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments.
He called on Northern Governors and traditional rulers to remain united in addressing security concerns, expanding economic opportunities, modernizing agriculture, improving education and healthcare, and promoting inclusive development across the region.
Sani stressed that the progress of Northern Nigeria is inseparable from that of the country, urging leaders to rise above political and sectional interests in pursuit of solutions that would improve the lives of citizens.
He welcomed Governors, deputy Governors, traditional rulers and other delegates to Kaduna, expressing confidence that the meeting would produce practical resolutions to advance peace, security and development in Northern Nigeria.
The meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and the Northern States Traditional Rulers Council was held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Government House, Kaduna.
