Why Bathing Babies Twice A Day Is Dangerous

0
Prof Ali Pate
Mothers have been warned by health experts on the dangers of bathing their new born babies twice a day,  saying the practice exposes infants to cold, skin irritation, and avoidable health complications.
The physicians, who spoke with newsmen, said babies who spend most of their time indoors only need one bath daily, while preterm and low birth weight babies should not be bathed every day.
They added that a baby’s head should be washed only once a week to prevent excessive heat loss.
A Consultant Neonatologist, Dr. Fatima Abdullahi, explained that the traditional practice of frequent bathing and scrubbing is unnecessary and harmful because newborns have delicate, thin skin that is easily irritated.
“Bathing babies daily suffices for most babies. Preterm babies and babies that are very small, we don’t advocate bathing them every day, and when you are bathing them, you don’t bathe them for more than five to 10 minutes,” she told PUNCH.
Abdullahi noted that washing a baby’s head daily should be avoided because infants lose significant heat through the scalp.
“You don’t have to wash their head every day because they easily get cold from there and lose a lot of heat. When you wash their heads, it should be the last part, and it shouldn’t be done every day. It could be done maybe once a week,” she explained, adding that the hair must be dried properly afterward.
She warned that overbathing exposes babies to cold, saying, “After bathing, before you dry them up, they lose a lot of body heat. So, most times we say bathing babies once a day is okay.”
While some parents may give a second bath during extremely hot weather, Abdullahi stressed that the head should still not be washed and that the practice applies only to term babies with good weight.
She emphasised the importance of keeping infants warm, especially during cold weather.
“When the weather is cold, you don’t have to bathe them very early in the morning. You can let the place be a bit warm before bathing them.
“The prolonged traditional baths that require washing them five to seven times are not necessary.”
Abdullahi also advised parents to use mild soap and avoid harsh, mixed black soaps, noting that these products can irritate a baby’s tender skin.
She recommended simple petroleum jelly as the safest moisturiser. For preterm babies, she suggested daily cleaning with olive oil rather than bathing, saying some can go up to a month without a bath “and nothing will happen to them.”
She dismissed the widespread belief that babies who are not bathed frequently will develop body odour when they grow older.
“The misconception that people who are not given a bath have body odour when they grow is wrong. It is not scientifically proven,” she said.
The neonatologist further advised against bathing newborns immediately after delivery and warned against scrubbing off the vernix caseosa—the whitish coating on a newborn’s skin.
“It is very useful and helps them maintain their temperature for the first few hours of life. There is no need to rush to bathe babies immediately after they’re born,” she said.
A Consultant Dermatologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Folakemi Cole-Adeife, also cautioned against overbathing and overwrapping babies, describing both practices as major contributors to heat rash and diaper rash in infants.
“Avoid over-bathing babies. They should bathe once every day. They don’t need to bathe twice a day with a heavy sponge,” she said.
Cole-Adeife advised parents to keep babies dressed in light clothing and well moisturised, particularly in hot environments.
“We don’t need those heavy blankets and shawls that a lot of moms wrap their babies in. It just gives them a heat rash… the treatment should just be to allow the baby’s skin to breathe,” she said.

Dayo Mobereola - NIMASA DG
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has expressed confidence that the Maritime Labour E-Platform would boost the sector’s competitiveness as it hosted a workshop to sensitize users of the portal through practical demonstrations and interactive sessions.
Held in Lagos, the workshop practicalized the process of registering, verifying and issuing identity cards to seafarers and dockworkers via the NIMASA portal (@nimasa.gov.ng). Practical support measures, including training, cybersecurity and planning a phased rollout to ensure smooth adoption, were also discussed.
Speaking at the event, the NIMASA Executive Director, Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services, Mr. Jibril Abba stressed the importance of the digital platform to achieving global competitiveness, stating that “our digital transformation is underway. This year we launched the Maritime Labour E-Platform, building on our 2022 dockworkers registration success. It is a modern, integrated system for registering and verifying seafarers, dockworkers, employers, and other stakeholders.”
Represented by the Director, Maritime Labour Services Department, Mr. Ibrahim Umar Sidi, the Executive Director further noted that “by centralizing registration and issuing secure biometric ID cards, it cuts paperwork, speeds up processing, and gives us reliable real-time data. This helps us meet our obligations under the Maritime Labour Convention and boosts Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global Blue Economy.”
He also emphasized that the actualization of the digital platform was in line with the Agency’s statutory obligations, stating that, “This initiative directly fulfils our mandate under Section 27(1)(a) of the NIMASA Act 2007, which charges us with the duty to document and maintain a register of every maritime worker and operator. It also aligns with our obligations under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006, often called the “Seafarers’ Bill of Rights for promoting fair working conditions, health protections, and social security.
In its efforts to build a smarter, more transparent, and efficient maritime sector, the Federal Government launched the Maritime Labour E-Platform, during an event in June marking the 2025 Day of the Seafarer in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The platform, which is a digital solution designed to revolutionize the governance of maritime labour in Nigeria, was described by the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola at the time as “a transformative tool for labour administration”.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky  Aiyedatiwa.

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Monday, presented a total budget estimate of ₦492.8 billion for the 2026 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly, describing it as a realistic, reform-driven financial plan designed to consolidate the economic gains recorded in 2025.

Presenting the budget tagged “Budget of Economic Consolidation,” the governor said the proposal was guided by macroeconomic assumptions adopted from the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) Fiscal Strategy Paper, with priorities focused on infrastructure expansion, food security, human capital development and prudent fiscal management.

Governor Aiyedatiwa noted that the 2026 budget size of ₦492,795,667,939 was crafted to reflect current economic realities, particularly the volatility of federally shared revenues and disruptions caused by changes in VAT distribution.

He explained that on the expenditure side, the government deliberately designed a structure that encourages collaboration among all organs of government to drive “organic synergy” necessary for sustainable development.

The Governor announced that the 2026 expenditure framework reflects a Capital–Recurrent ratio of 57.22% to 42.78%, a signal of the administration’s strong commitment to infrastructure and long-term investment.

According to him, the sectoral and IPSAS-compliant distributions clearly show projected spending priorities for social services, economic growth sectors, administration and law, and justice.

Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the allocation pattern demonstrates a bold push for an infrastructure revolution, ensuring that all ongoing projects across the state receive adequate funding.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Mr Speaker, our intention on infrastructure revolution is clear. We look forward to completing the plethora of ongoing projects across the state. Rest assured that no project in Ondo State will be left abandoned,” he assured.

The governor said the 2026 budget will consolidate ongoing reforms through eight broad policy thrusts, including:

Sustained food security and agricultural transformation

Human capital development

Infrastructure expansion

Improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) drive

Social inclusion and protection

Economic diversification

Strengthened community development

Prudent fiscal management

He stressed the administration’s determination to reduce waste, minimise borrowing, and deepen technology-driven revenue collection systems.

Governor Aiyedatiwa used the occasion to commend the State House of Assembly for maintaining a stable and cooperative working relationship with the executive.

“Your exemplary leadership has fostered harmony and strengthened public trust. We are grateful for your unwavering dedication to the progress of our State,” he said.

16 Taraba PDP Lawmakers Defect To APC …Assembly Workers Down Tool

Taraba Lawmakers

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Ahead of the formal defection of the  Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, to the All Progressive Congress, APC, 16 Peoples Democratic party, PDP, members of the State Legislative body, on Monday, November 17, 2025 announced their resignation from the party.

This is as the State’s chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN began an indefinite industrial action to press home its demands.

The Source reports that Governor Kefas is billed to be received into the APC fold on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

The erstwhile PDP Governor  had officially disclosed his resignation from the PDP on Saturday November 15 2025 while interacting with the media during an inspection tour of the stadium.

He emphasized that the decision to defect to the ruling party at the centre was taken in the overall interest of the people of the State.

“On the 19 of November, 2025, I will, officially, transition from the PDP to the APC. This movement is about the destiny of the people of Taraba State, and we are expecting many visitors for the ceremony”, Gov Kefas stated.

Announcing the resignation of the State Lawmakers and their subsequent defection to the APC  during Monday’s plenary, the Speaker Rt Hon John Kizito Bonzina, informed that the decision was sequel to the lingering leadership and internal crises bedeviling the PDP at the National level.

Rt Hon Bonzina stated that the actions of the Lawmakers are in conformity with the provisions of Section 109 of the Constitution which permits the defection of Lawmakers to other parties in the event of division in their original parties.

According to the legislators, the festering squabble which has seen the party split into two factions has brought about uncertainty and confusion, making it unwise and unsafe for them to continue to retain their membership.

The House members noted that their decision was also reached after wide consultations with their constituents.

Like the Governor, the Lawmakers stated that the interests of their constituents and those of the entire state also played a significant role in their decision to join the APC.

Most of the defecting House members who spoke expressed the apprehension and fear that the  present crisis rocking the PDP has the dangerous potentials of leading to its eventual extinction.

The Legislators separately and collectively insisted that their continued membership of the PDP may endanger their political future, hence the decision to move on.

However, the defection of the legislators is coming just as the House of Assembly workers on Sunday night commenced a strike  action over the non-implementation of financial autonomy for the Legislative arm of the Government and the failure of the authorities to implement the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure CONLESS.

In a statement jointly issued by Hamidu Buba and Timothy Enganya, Chairman and Secretary respectively, PASAN directed all members in the employ of the State Legislative body to proceed on an indefinite strike, pending when all the issues at stake will be resolved.

The Union, however, indicated its willingness to explore peaceful options in bringing the matter to an end.

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The immediate past Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, Monday morning November 17, 2025 announced his intention to contest Kebbi State Governorship race come 2027.

About two months ago ,his vehicular convoy was attacked on the street of Birni-Kebbi, the State capital, allegedly by supporters and sympathizers of the ruling All Progressive Congress APC in the State.

Malami himself had pointedly accused Governor Idris and his supporters of being behind the attack which left many people injured and, several vehicles damaged.

Governor Idris and the APC officials had distanced themselves from the attack, and instead blamed Malami for masterminding series of politically motivated violent activities in Kebbi state owing to his ambition to govern the state at all cost.

Speaking in an interview with the DCL Hausa, Malami said he has accepted the call by the good people of Kebbi state to throw his hat into the ring in 2027

“I have agreed to contest ,and there is no retreat. God willing, we are going to win because we have the support of the People of Kebbi State.

“INEC guidelines do not allow us to begin any form of mobilization yet, but I assure you that when the time comes, you will see that we have the support of the people of Kebbi state” Malami stated .

Malami a chieftain and one of the founding leaders of the emerging opposition Coalition platform the African Democratic Congress ADC  slammed the APC-led administrations both at the  Federal and State levels for inflicting on the people untold hardship through misgovernance and anti-people policies .

He emphasized that the overriding  reason for his decision to join the gubernatorial race is to free the people from the economic chain that has been tied around them .

According to him, as an agrarian state, many farmers have been forced out of their farms owing to insecurity ,and harsh economic situation in the land .

He pledged to offer the people a new lease of life through purposeful leadership.

All things being equal, the former Minister of Justice is expected to pursue his political ambition on the platform of ADC.

In 2023, he had mobilized to run for same seat, but later withdrew from the race to concentrate on his Ministerial duties. Malami is married to one of Buhari’s daughters.
