Governor Francis Nwifuru sacks all Traditional Rulers

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, Saturday January 31, 2026, ordered the termination of the appointment of Government appointees including Commissioners, Special Advisers, and Special Assistants, from Amasiri community in Afikpo Local Council of the State.

The Governor also directed the immediate withdrawal of certificates of authority from all the Traditional Rulers, Village Heads and other Leaders of the community over their failure to nip in the bud the clashes which has seriously embarrassed the State Government.

This is as the Governor appealed to the Okporojor community not to resort to self -help but to trust the State Government to rise to the occasion.

The Source reports that Governor Nwifuru’s action is coming against the backdrop of the communal clash between Amasiri and Okporojor communities which left four persons beheaded, and several homes razed.

According to local witness accounts, some armed hoodlums from Amasiri Community had, late Thursday  afternoon, invaded Okporojor in Oso Edda, Edda Local Government Area of the State shooting indiscriminately, and setting homes on fire.

Apart from the four persons said to have been beheaded, several other members of the Okporojor community, including women and children were also said to have been abducted by the invading local fighters from Amasiri.

Many other residents in their attempts to escape the onslaught, were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The attack, according to locals, was in connection with a long-standing communal disagreement over disputed border area between the two communities.

According to local sources, the two warring communities have been laying claims to the disputed land, with past efforts at amicably resolving the rift ending in futility.

Governor Nwifuru who announced the sweeping disciplinary measures against Amasiri-born Government appointees and traditional rulers during an  on-the-spot assessment visit to the scene of the carnage on Saturday, similarly sacked all town Union Executives, and development centre coordinators, and management members from Amasiri Community as a punishment for their alleged complicity in the gruesome and dastardly attack on Okporojor community.

Addressing thousands of displaced residents of Okporojor, the Ebonyi State Governor affirmed the unflinching commitment of the Government to bringing the perpetrators of the heinous act to justice.

“I am saddened and disappointed over the recent developments in Okporojor community. However, the assurance I am giving to the Okporojor leaders and citizens is that the Government will arrest the perpetrators of the unrest.

“The Government of Ebonyi State will definitely prove to those behind this evil act that they can not got scot-free.  I promise you, we as a Government, will not allow this wicked deed to go unpunished.

“But I am pleading with you to remain calm and peaceful and avoid anything that can escalate the problem. Avoid the temptation of engaging in reprisal attacks.

“My visit today is a clear testimonial to our readiness to get to the root of this dastardly act. My message to the people of Amasiri is for them to have a rethink because violence will never lead them to anywhere.

“I heard also that Akpoha community have blocked their road because of the alleged belligerent posture of Amasiri Community.

“And I say, look, it has already gotten to the point of no return. So, Amasiri should be careful of their actions. We love them. We adore them. We believe that they have men that still have character.

“So, on this note, for the time being, the Development Union Executives and all the Village Heads in Amasiri Community are hereby dissolved.

” The Traditional Rulers Certificates are hereby withdrawn. All the Government appointees from Amasiri are hereby sacked.

“All the Government appointees from the Management Committee to Commissioners are hereby sacked”, Gov Nwifuru stated.

The Source further reports that Governor Nwifuru had on Friday January 30, 2026 ordered a comprehensive inquest into the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

The Governor, while vehemently condemning the development, described the attendant human fatalities and  wanton destruction of properties as not only barbaric, but a gross violation of the sanctity of human life.

He informed that the State Government will work in concert with security agencies and other relevant authorities to to track down the masterminds of the devilish act.

“I received with shock the news of the attack on Oso Edda which claimed lives, and led to the destruction of properties.

“This act of callousness is a direct affront to our resolve to restore lasting peace in our Communities, and it will not be tolerated.

“As a Government, the security of our people and their property is paramount and we will leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is served”, the Governor assured.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Ondo at 50

As Ondo State celebrates its 50th year of creation, Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has declared  Monday, and Tuesday, as public holidays across the State.

The declaration is to enable residents of Ondo State fully participate in activities lined up to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the creation of Ondo State, a historic milestone that marks five decades of growth, resilience and collective progress.

The Governor urges citizens to use the opportunity of the holidays to join in the celebrations, reflect on the State’s journey so far, and recommit themselves to the shared vision of building a more prosperous and united Ondo State.

Essential service providers are, however, advised to make adequate arrangements to ensure uninterrupted services during the period.

Earlier on Saturday, Governor Aiyedatiwa, led workers and the people of the state on a walk from the Government House, Alagbaka, as part of activities lined up for the state’s golden jubilee celebration.

He emphasised the importance of physical fitness and spiritual renewal as essential pillars for healthy living and effective service.

Speaking at the Akure Township Stadium after, the walk, Governor Aiyedatiwa urged residents to remain committed to renewing their strength, both physically and spiritually

Members of the State Executive Council, political appointees and party faithful joined the governor on the health walk. Residents who trooped out in large numbers were elated with the exercise.

Drawing from biblical references, he said waiting upon God renews strength, adding that participants had demonstrated resilience by completing the walk without fainting.

According to him, the health walk was a vital component of the anniversary programme, stressing that the body, which carries the soul and spirit, must be kept in good shape to function effectively.

He explained that regular physical exercise supports cardiovascular health, improves breathing and enhances overall wellbeing, noting that a weak or sick body could affect both the soul and spiritual connection.

The Governor expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the successful conduct of the exercise, noting that no injury was recorded.

He thanked members of the anniversary planning committee, led by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti and announced that anniversary activities would continue with a thanksgiving service at St. Thomas Church, Akure, on Sunday.

Legendary late Afrobeat Musician, Fela Anikulapo Kuti has been honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the music industry.

The Award made the Afrobeat maestro the first African to be honoured with such prestigious Award.

David Adeleke, popularly as Davido, joined the Kuti family at the Grammy Honors Party in Los Angeles, United States of America, held in celebration of the late Afrobeat pioneer.

Videos shared on Instagram by Davido’s logistics manager, Israel DMW, showed the singer alongside Fela’s children, Femi and Yeni Kuti, and other members of his team at the ceremony.

Sharing clips from the event, Israel DMW wrote, “A night for late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Abami Eda of the universe. Outside LA.”

The Late Afrobeat legend will officially be recognised this weekend by the Recording Academy, with the Lifetime Achievement Award set to be presented at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday, on the eve of the main GRAMMY Awards gala.

Other recipients of the honour include music icons such as Cher, Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana, Paul Simon and Chaka Khan.

Femi Anikulapo Kuti, the eldest Son of Fela while reacting to the recognition, alongside Fela’s first cousin and head of the Kuti family, Yemisi Ransome-Kuti, described the award as a victory for Africa.

“This is a celebration for the African people and they should take it as their award. Another African is being celebrated,” she told AFP.

However, she also urged award-giving bodies not to wait until artists are gone before recognising their impact.

Reflecting on what Fela’s reaction might have been, Ransome-Kuti said the Afrobeat legend would likely have remarked, “better late than never,” while noting that during his lifetime, he was not particularly concerned about Western recognition.

Nollywood Actress, Funke Akindele, Slams Critics Who Fault Her Marketing  Style

Africa Movie Box Office Record Breaker, Funke Akindele, has come hard on those criticizing her ‘Dancing Style’ approach in marketing her movies.

The Actress, popular as Jenifa, is known for her dancing and comedic marketing strategy of her movies. She currently holds the title of the highest-grossing Nollywood filmmaker. But she has come under criticism from netizens, colleagues and movie critiques, who have faulted her marketing approach.

In a series of posts shared by the actress Saturday on her Instagram story, she stated that she is not the one hindering anybody’s progress and it only makes sense if all of them succeed together.

She said, “I’m not the one hindering your progress. Ka rin ka po, yiye nin ye ni”

She further stated that the sky is big enough for everybody to fly and others should create their own path if they cannot beat them or join the existing one.

She said: “If you can’t beat them or join them, create your own path. No allow jealousy burn you. The sky is so big for everybody to fly. Eyin Werey jojo!!!”

She urged her other colleagues to go ahead and create alternative promotion strategies to market their films.

“Go ahead and create alternative promotion or marketing strategies for promoting your business, or hire a company to handle it.

“You can do it! The opportunities are endless, and everyone has their own path. I’m focused on mine, and I have faith in God’s plan for me”, she said.

The Actress broke her own Movie Box Office Record, as she currently holds the record for the top three highest-grossing Nollywood movies with Behind The Scenes, released in 2025, grossing N2,407,000,000 and still counting. Everybody Loves Jenifer, released in 2024, grossed N1,882,553,548, and A Tribe Called Judah, released in 2023, grossed N1,408,227,541.

In a similar development, renowned filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, has said he is not interested in box office records or competing for cinema revenue, stressing that his focus is on creative control and long-term value rather than headline earnings.

Afolayan made the remarks while speaking at the Lagos Business of Film Summit on January 30, where he criticised what he described as the exhausting promotional demands associated with cinema releases.

According to him, streaming platforms such as Netflix offer better returns without the pressure of extensive promotional gimmicks, citing his recent project, Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre, as an example.

Responding to questions about a possible return to cinema releases, Afolayan suggested he would only do so under the right creative conditions. “I’ll come back if Kene and Ope can say to me, look at the gimmick she has left. See what they did.

“They want to release in December, your film that you are in. They have announced in January. But my point really is, I just need like, I’ll make you amazing film,” he said in part.

Referencing Aníkúlápó, the filmmaker noted that minimal promotion can still generate strong audience interest.

“Look at, okay, look at Anikulapo, This is not anything. We released just a screenshot, a screen grab of the series, I did that like two weeks ago. I posted it and it was people have been stabbed of good content.

“You see why you need me, Kene. The whole world went boom because they haven’t seen, you know, anything from us in a while,” he said.

He added that while a future cinema collaboration remains possible, it would not involve what he described as performative promotion.

“I Don’t Give A Damn, I Don’t Care,”  Wike Says As He Sacks Two Directors

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister
Nyesom Wike

By Gideon Njoku

Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has sacked two Directors of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, and he says he neither gives a damn nor cares.

Disclosing this on Friday during a Media parley, Wike said they were sacked for insubordination and sabotage.

He did not disclose  the names of the Directors he sacked, or whether they were even queried before their sudden sack but not only did he accuse them of sabotage, he accused them of unwillingness to work.

He said: “For somebody like me, it won’t work. Once I identify that you are not willing to work, you are doing something to sabotage, I kick you out of the place.

“Last night I took a decision to kick out one or two Directors. They will hear it tomorrow. I don’t give a damn. I don’t care.

“This country must move on. No one man can say he owns this country. Nobody. No one group can say they own this country than you. Nobody can say that. We all own this country. We all belong to this country.

“The moment I see that you don’t want to work, I kick you out. Heaven will not fall.”

The fate of the two Directors came on the heels of the strike action and protest embarked upon by the FCT a few days ago.

During the protest, the angry workers asked for the sack of the Minister and called him unprintable names.

The National Industrial Court has since ordered the workers to  suspend their strike action pending the hearing of the suit they filed against the FCT Minister.

Sanusi Will Remain Emir Of Kano – Kano State Government

0
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

By Adesina Soyooye

The fear that the factional Emir of Kano, the one reinstalled and recognised by the current Administration in Kano State, Lamido Sanusi, will be dethroned has been dismissed.

The fear stemmed from the defection of the Governor of Kano State, Kabiru Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP to the All Progressives Congress, APC. It was Yusuf’s Government which dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and reinstalled Sanusi. Sanusi was dethroned by the immediate past Government of Dr Abdullahi Ganduje which installed Bayero as the Emir.

Since that past two, the crisis of who is the Emir of Kano has remained unresolved because it has become a legal issue.

Bayero,  it is strongly speculated, has the support of the Federal Government while Sanusi enjoys the full support of the State Government.

But there seems to be a breather for Sanusi from the side of Governor Yusuf. He has dismissed any idea or suggestion that his movement to the Government at the Centre will affect Emir Sanusi who lives and operates from the historic Gidan Rumfa palace.  Emir Ado Bayero, lives and operates from the Nasarawa mini-palace.

The snte over what will happen to Sanusi was raised  on Thursday when the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said  that the resolution of the crisis is near.

Waiya who spoke on a radio programme in Kano, said that the state government had put “concrete measures” for the restoration of lasting peace and stability.

Waiya’s comments

were interpreted by not a few people to mean that the government is now  exploring a political settlement either by a reinstatement of Bayero and removal of Sanusi, or by retaining Sanusi while offering Bayero a face-saving exit, perhaps through a federal appointment.

But on Friday, the Governor responding unequivocally ruled out any plan to remove Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

In an  exclusive interview with Weekend Trust, the Governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Bature, said there was “absolutely no plan or agreement” to that effect.

He said: “There is no plan to replace Emir Sanusi on the throne of Kano.

“The appointment of the Emir was done after the Emirates law had been repealed, and there is no plan at the executive level for any further amendment.

“Emir Sanusi has been duly appointed in accordance with the repeal law, and this defection to the APC will not in any way change the status quo. Emir Sanusi remains the Emir of Kano. There is no move, no intention to substitute him.

“The renewed speculation is unfounded rumours being circulated by individuals who do not mean well for Kano State.

“People should disregard such rumours. There must be a clear understanding of the distinction between institutions. The traditional institution is non-partisan. What His Excellency did was to restore the lost glory and integrity of that institution.

“We want to appeal to him and his co-sponsors to please, in the interest of peace, stability and economic prosperity of Kano State, distance themselves from the ongoing claim of awaiting reinstatement.

“The emirate issue is not a political decision. It is the personal interest of some individuals.

“It should not be discussed during a serious political decision like this.

“The governor has the constitutional right to appoint or remove an emir. That decision was taken long ago, and it is exclusive to him. For us, this issue is immaterial at this point.”

“I want to use this opportunity to appeal to the former Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, to recuse himself from being used by some people and to contribute positively to the Kano First agenda by ensuring political stability in the State.”

Ondo Police Command Frees 14 Trafficked Foreign Nationals, Arrests Suspects

Ondo State Police Command is in custody of members of suspected transnational human traffickers whose operation covers three West African countries.

The command explained in a statement at the weekend that 14 victims of the illicit business have been rescued.

Command spokesman, Abayomi Jimoh stated that “On Thursday, 22nd January, 2026, a Togolese national, Meale Yaoili (M), reported at the Yaba Police Station that he had escaped from the custody of a human trafficking syndicate operating within Nigeria.

“He stated that he was lured from the Republic of Togo to Nigeria under the pretext of securing employment in Canada.

“According to the victim, he knew one Tchodia Potolaw Fidel, now at large, since 2019, who claimed to be residing in Canada.

“The suspect allegedly convinced him to travel to Nigeria, claiming that there was no Canadian Embassy in Togo. Upon his arrival, the victim’s personal belongings were forcefully seized, and he was held against his will after paying the sum of 800,000 CFA francs.

“Following swift and coordinated action by operatives of the Command, six suspects were arrested in connection with the case.

“The suspects were identified as Cleude Grao, Samuel Dsiwa, Michael Amissa, Olayiwola Kazeem, Akinubi Adebayo, and Oluwole Vincent, the landlord of the premises where the illegal operation was conducted. During the operation, three victims were successfully rescued.”

“In another development, On 23rd January, 2026, a case initially reported as suspected banditry was lodged by one Chief Ojomu of Oba-Ile at the Oba-Ile Divisional Headquarters against Umaru Baba, male and eleven others.

“The case was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were not bandits as alleged, but illegal immigrants from the Republic of Chad, residing in a duplex apartment around the OSOPADEC area of Akure.

“Further intelligence uncovered that Umaru Baba is allegedly at the centre of trans-border criminal activities, including recruitment, trafficking in persons, modern-day slavery, and other related offences.

Investigations further indicated that the principal suspect allegedly operates as a representative of a company involved in online marketing of various products.

“Through this platform, the suspect is alleged to have lured, recruited, and harboured eleven able-bodied men and one female, all suspected to be illegal migrants, under the guise of engaging them as commission-based marketers.

“All eleven persons were discovered to be Chadian nationals illegally transported into Nigeria en route the Cameroon border.

“The suspects are currently in police custody, while the identified foreign nationals are being treated as victims of trafficking.

“Findings revealed that the landlord, a female resident of Ibadan, is being traced for questioning over alleged negligence in allowing her property to be used for criminal activities.

“The suspects in both cases have made useful statements explaining their respective roles in the offence.

“Investigation is ongoing with a view to apprehending the fleeing suspects, the rescued victims will be handed over to their respective embassies for necessary diplomatic action and repatriation.”

Is ADC Dead On Arrival? Even Atiku’s Boy Decamped

No Traction Still: Why is the ADC withering and seeming like it’s dead on arrival? The fanfare with which Mr Peter Obi and key politicians gathered in Enugu to declare for the African Democratic Congress at the end of January had lit up the political arena, giving hope of a tsunami about to wake.

But alas, it has turned out to be a weak spark after all.

Nigerians who had expected a political behemoth rampaging across the country are now wondering what’s going on?

No serious activities are going on in the party so far; no intentional effort to organise and build up structural fortresses across the land for a fledgling organisation.

It’s true that campaigns are yet to start but the party doesn’t inspire confidence in Nigerians who seek a credible and viable alternative to an APC that has failed them woefully over the past decade.

EVEN ATIKU’S SON DECAMPED: It must have been a sinking feeling for many members when Abba Abubakar the second son of ADC’s kingpin, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar publicly announced his jumping ship to APC.

But Abba didn’t leave without rubbing porridge on the face of his father and his party. He proclaimed to the world that no party can beat President Bola Tinubu in 2027. He has performed great; he has led without nepotism and religious biases, Abba opined about his father’s prime political opponent.

Further, Atiku’s heir, Umar Abubakar remains a member of the PDP and a serving commissioner in Adamawa State under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.  It’s either the twain have no confidence in their father’s politics or they see no hope in his party, ADC.

APC CAPTURE KANO, SQUASH KWANKWASO: While, no politician of note has as much as strayed into the ADC, just last Monday, (January 26th), Kano State governor, Kabir Abba Yusuf, joined the gravy train to APC leaving his benefactor, Rabiu Kwankwaso and his NNPP in the lurch. Or more appropriately, in the ditch, because the governor didn’t only move house, he literally moved with the house.

Kwankwaso is currently left out there in the harsh, harmattan cold of Kano. Keen political watchers had noted the fissures in Kwankwaso’s NNPP. The  kingpin of Kano politics himself was evidently in trouble in the last few weeks, as the APC war machine broke into his Kano fortress. Kwankwaso was a drowning man and desperately sought anchor or even a straw to grasp. ADC looked on morosely as APC conquered Kano and castrated Kwankwaso. It’s a telltale sign that ADC is currently snoozing.

Again, Tuesday, January 27th, Plateau State governor, Caleb Mutfwang joined the APC bandwagon. APC has about 30 governors in its kitty out of 36.

WHY’S NO ONE JOINING ADC? The most plausible answer is that the party is seen as an ATIKU PARTY. Then the coming of Peter Obi and his OBiDIENTS has further fractured the house into two ideological divides instead of bolstering it. As it stands, ADC can be said to be a two headed animal. It suffers both personality and ideology crises.

The Atiku factor, his obduracy, inflexibility and heedless ambition are pissing off many people many who would have loved to take shelter under the ADC.

Even many in the PDP who know they are nursing a cadaver, would rather be undertakers than  join the ADC.

Those who cannot stand Atiku’s undemocratic and  authoritarian ways; those who cannot stand his blind ambition; those who think he is insensitive to the feelings of southerners with his born-to-rule posturing. Those who detest his offensive me-or-nobody else traits feel safer within the APC fold.

Peter Obi on the other hand, has done nothing to convince his ardent followers how he would co-habit with Atiku. Most people believe that the primary is already a done deal for Atiku; so what happens to Obi and his massive followers who seek a drastic change from the old order Atiku represents?

WITHOUT AN ARROWHEAD: When the APC was in formation in early 2013, Muhammadu Buhari was unmistakably the fulcrum and cornerstone of the coalition. He was the pillar around which the party was founded and of course, he was the most viable and most electable. He was therefore, the undisputed candidate.

The primary was a mere formality.

Between 2013 up until the election in 2015, the APC rolled out a propaganda machine not known in Nigeria’s political history to whitewash Buhari’s ingrained grimes (including being a coup plotter and a despot) and make him presentable once again to Nigerians and the world.

That was one of the winning formulas that helped the new party to bring down the house of the ruling PDP.

ADC NEEDS AN ARROWHEAD NOW: Time is running out on ADC. It must stop this charade of insisting on primary as determinant of an arrowhead. Obi has the edge; he has the momentum, he is viable and tested. The party ought to rally round him to face the ruling party next year. This fact needs to be made known today!

Besides, the south should complete its term and southeast ought to be supported to raise a president in order for Nigeria to heal fully, 56 years after the civil war.

LAST LINE: PRESIDENT TINUBU STUMBLES AGAIN What other sign does the APC need to understand that President Bola Tinubu has lost the capacity to lead Nigeria? The Democratic Party had to force the incumbent, Joe Biden, to stand down in the last US election when it became evident he couldn’t lead anymore.

The APC must do Nigeria the favour and bite the bullet. Tinubu can’t lead Nigeria for another four years. He is too infirm.

Ganduje: Gang Up Against Tinubu Will Fail

0
Bola Tinubu and Abdulahi Ganduje

Former National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Abdullahi Ganduje has described the plan by some politicians in the country to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 as a gang-up that will fail.

Ganduje made the assertion on Friday, in Abuja, the nation’s capital when a group, Forum of Northern Nigeria Youth Leaders paid him a visit in his office.

The former APC boss said the country is lucky to have President Tinubu as its leaders, saying the incumbent still has more than four years to spend in office, in accordance with the power sharing agreement between the North and South.

According to him, there was an agreement among political players in the country, to the effect that after the eight years government of late President Muhammadu Buhari, the office should be ceded to the South for another eight years, adding that those planning to unseat Tinubu from office in 2027 “are making a big mistake”.

Ganduje: “Pertaining to the next election in 2027, those that are nursing or thinking otherwise, that the North will vote for another candidate other than Asiwaju, are making a big mistake.

“This is the first time Nigeria as a nation is lucky to have a politician as President. His constituency is politics, his upbringing is politics because he believes in the unity of this country. In fact, he struggled; he was even in exile for democracy to survive in Nigeria.

“So there is no better person to be elected in 2027 than Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Recall that a chieftain of the New Nigerian Peoples party, NNPP, Buba Galadinma had earlier in the week said President Tinubu will not be returned to office in 2027.

The former APC chieftain said all what the opposition figures in the country needed to do to defeat Tinubu, is unite and put a credible presidential candidate forward.
