After 30 days off duty, teachers in public schools in Oyo state are expected to resume duty on Thursday.

This follows suspension of industrial action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), embarked upon by public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State.

The union directed all affected members to resume work on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

The union stated that the decision followed extensive consultations between the union and the Oyo State Government after the recent security concerns that prompted the strike, particularly the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Oyo State Wing of the NUT, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the State Secretary, Comrade Olukayode Salami, the union disclosed that the suspension of the strike was approved after receiving firm assurances from the state government on measures to strengthen security across public schools.

According to the union, the government has pledged to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of the abducted teachers and pupils, while also enhancing security architecture around schools through the deployment of a Joint Security Task Force.

Other commitments include improved emergency response mechanisms, increased surveillance of vulnerable schools, support for affected victims and their families, and the implementation of additional safety measures to forestall future security breaches.

The union expressed appreciation to teachers across the state for their unwavering solidarity, discipline and commitment throughout the period of the industrial action.

It also acknowledged the intervention and support of stakeholders who played key roles in resolving the impasse.

Consequently, the NUT directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to return to their respective duty posts on Thursday and continue their academic responsibilities.

The union, however, urged members to remain security-conscious, comply with all safety directives and promptly report any suspicious movement or security threat to the appropriate authorities.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, safety and professional interests of teachers while sustaining dialogue with the Oyo State Government to ensure that all outstanding issues are fully addressed.
