Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum, under the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It is not known if his resignation stems from his alleged involvement in an aborted coup yo throw out the Government of President Bola Tinubu, but in his resignation letter, Sylva cited, according to him, APC’s departure from its founding ideals. He also cited growing concerns and growing concerns over the conduct of the Tinubu Government.
Recall that his name was, in a surprising revelation, connected to the alleged coup for which he was tagged as the main financier. He was, however, not arraigned along with others as he was out of the country when the alleged coup story brother, and has so remained.
A founding member of the APC, Sylva announced his resignation through a letter he addressed to the APC chairman wherin he stated that his decision followed consultations with his family, associates, colleagues and supporters.
In the resignation letter, he expressed disappointment over the “thorough” and “unrecognisable” thwarting of the ideals which motivated him and other members to build the APC.
According to him, “in all good conscience”, he could no longer remain in a party which leaders, operate on the belief that “all is fair in politics.”
But he noted: “All cannot be fair in any endeavour of life. The demands of basic decency and morality forbid it.”
He said that the Federal Government, formed under the APC platform ended up disappointing most Nigerians. He, also,
noted that he could neither see a credible attempt nor any realistic possibility of revamping the party and its administration.
Therefore, Sylva said, he has no choice but to leave what he compared to a “floundering ship.” He
expressed confidence that Nigerians would, in 2027 “vote for Nigeria” and free the country from what he called “a political stranglehold.”
Sylva revealed that he deliberately copied the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), his resignation letter, and alleged that the Commission has of recent, conducted itself more as an organ of the APC than an institution of the Nigerian State.
He said that his resignation could expose him and his associates to “redoubled witch-hunt,” but disclosed he was prepared for the consequences.
Sylva was a former one-term Governor of Bayelsa State under the Peoples Democratic Party. He quit the Party after he was denied a return ticket in favour of Senator Seriake Dickson, now a Senator and founder of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC. On joining the APC as a foundation member, he was appointed a Minister, a position he held until the end of Buhari’s tenure.
He had attempted to contest for the office of the President to succeed Buhari, but chickened out after he had purchased both the expression of interest and confirmation forms.
His resignation from the APC, given his present situation, makes no meaning, and is not likely to have any effect on the fate of the Party in the 2027 General Elections.
