After dumping the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Inspector-General of Police, (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, is set to contest the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship election under the banner of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Adamu’s campaign organisation confirmed his political move following comments by the Nasarawa State APC Chairman, Aliyu Bello, questioning the former police chief’s political platform for pursuing his governorship ambition.
The campaign team disclosed that Adamu had already joined the SDP and would contest the 2027 election on the party’s platform.
Adamu’s decision to leave the APC followed his defeat in the party’s governorship primary in Nasarawa State.
He resigned from the APC in May, citing dissatisfaction with the conduct and outcome of the primary election.
The former IGP had criticised the process, alleging that the exercise failed to adequately reflect the preferences of APC members at the grassroots.
In a statement, the Director of Media and Strategic Communications of the Adamu campaign organisation, Otaru Douglas, described the former police chief’s move to the SDP as a strategic decision to pursue his political ambition on what he considers a more credible platform.
Douglas added that the primary that led to Adamu’s departure from the APC had been criticized by party members and stakeholders across the state’s 13 local government areas.
He maintained that Adamu remains determined to contest the governorship election and expressed confidence that he would secure victory with the support of the people of Nasarawa State.
The spokesman also dismissed concerns over Adamu’s political future and urged the Nasarawa APC chairman to focus on the affairs of his party rather than attempting to undermine the former IGP’s ambition.
