Umar Damagun, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on Nigerians to defend the nation’s democracy, which he said is currently under serious threats.
According to the embattled PDP chairman, the nation’s democracy must be rescued from those trying to truncate it, saying he’s ready to join Nigerians in the mission to safeguard the current democracy in the country from saboteurs.
Damagun spoke on Saturday in Bauchi state, saying the PDP is focused on how to rescue the country by winning the 2027 election.
He explained that the party remained on course to organize the November 15 and 16 National Convention in Ibadan, the state’s capital.
He said, “Nigeria’s democracy is witnessing challenges ranging from governance failures to insecurity and economic hardship. The country requires urgent political intervention.
“The PDP, being a major opposition party with national spread, is positioned to restore confidence in democratic institutions and protect the will of the people.
“Democracy thrives only when citizens defend it. The PDP will continue to engage Nigerians across all levels to ensure that our democratic system is protected and strengthened.”
Damagun’s remark comes on the heels of the alleged plans to stop its upcoming National Delegate Convention, a development many insist could render the party’s plan to contest next year’s elections invalid.
His position as the PDP Chairman was also threatened last week after a faction led by the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike suspended him, and other members of the NWC loyal to him, after which Abdulrahman Mohammed was appointed as Interim National Chairman. The Wike faction has also suspended the party’s Board of Trustees led by a former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, appointing Mao Ohuabunwa as the new BOT chair.
Also, there are conflicting court rulings by the Federal High Court, Abuja, and the Oyo state High court over the scheduled election.
The Damagun-led National Working Committee, NWC, has however vowed to go ahead with its plan to organize the convention.
