Security Men Takes Over Kano Emir’s Palace, Tension Rises

0
Security Men at Kano Emirs Palace

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Unusual heavy Security presence was, early  Friday morning, December 6, 2024, recorded  at the City Palace of Emir  Muhammad Sanusi in Kano.

The heavy security mounted by the Police in conjunction with other security organs ,led to the restriction of  movements in and out of  the Palace, where the factional Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has been holding court since his battle with Emir Aminu Ado Bayero for the ultimate control of the Kano Emirate Stool began on May 23 ,this year.

Emir Bayero is presently hold up at the Nasarawa mini Palace which serves the historic purpose of being the final resting place for departed Kano Emirs.

Both the entry and exit gates of the City palace are said to be manned by heavily armed and stern looking security personnel comprising mainly the Police and the Department of State Services DSS.

As at the time of reporting ,no clear reason(s) had been adduced for the enhanced security presence at the disputed Palace both from the Kano State Government and Police authorities.

But speculations have been rife, linking the security alert to the alleged plan by the factional Emir Sanusi to replace the Wanban Kano who is also the longest serving Senior Councilor of the Palace, Sanusi Abbas.

Unconfirmed reports say Emir Sanusi, against subsisting litigations over the struggle  for the Emirate throne, is allegedly set to announce Munir Sanusi as the new Wanban Kano,as well as the District Head of Bichi.

For the records ,Bichi is one of the four other Emirate Councils which Emirs were controversially deposed in May alongside the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, in order to pave the way for the second coming of Kano State Government- back Emir Sanusi.

Instructively, at the time of the now disputed dethronement, Nasir Ado Bayero, the younger sibling of Emir Aminu Bayero, both children of the late Emir Ado Bayero was the Emir of Bichi..

Impeccable sources revealed that with the Bichi deposition, efforts currently being challenged in Court ,as is the case with the Kano Emirate stool, Emir Sanusi’s alleged plan to appoint Munir Sanusi as the District Head of Bichi is strongly believed not to be sitting well with the people, as well as some power brokers from the Zone.

The Deputy Senate President , Jubril Barau and the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress APC and immediate past Governor of the state Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as well the former DSS Director General Yusuf Bichi are from the Kano North Senatorial District where Bichi Emirate is domiciled.

Besides, the unusual security situation at the palace has equally been linked with a rumoured economic summit by major stakeholders, which Emir Sanusi is alleged to be preparing to host and address.

The summit is believed strongly to be focused on the controversial tax reforms bills before the National Assembly ,as well as the prevailing harsh economic situation in  the  country ,a development which the authorities at the Federal level are said not to be comfortable with.

“We will be combining both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to ensure we tackle criminal elements in the state, but by and large, Ekiti is one of the safest states in the country.

“Despite this, we are not unmindful of the fact that as we move closer to yuletide season, there will be a spike in crimes and we are discussing with security Chiefs too and they are up to the task.

OPINION: Word of the Year 2024

Mr Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

I was watching the evening news on Monday night when two presenters used a word at different times that jolted me. I’ve heard and seen that word used often, especially by millennials and Gen Z, but I didn’t entirely pay heed because they were mostly in informal settings.

Anyways – I meant to write, anyway – I was jolted to hear that word, anyways, twice from two TV presenters on different programmes on the same station just minutes apart! My Use of English teachers would have beaten the straying “s” out of me if I had used that word even in error.

But that was at another time, before young adults invented more new words and other tokens of social expression, including memes and abbreviations, than at any other time in recent lexical history, thanks to technology and the prevalence of social media.

Words avant-garde

I’m trying to adjust, but I’m not quite there yet. And in this transition to a brave new world of avant-garde lexicography dominated by young adults, it’s improbable that I would have considered, anyways, a jarringly colloquial word, as proper form.

However, Oxford United Press (OUP), the bastion of rectitude,is leading the world in de-sensitising squeamishness in the use of the English language. In other words, sooner than later, I might well find myself loving and even using, anyways, in proper communication.

In a language and literary study in 2023 for the Word of the Year, OUP crowned “rizz” as the winner. The Press said it created a shortlist of eight words “all chosen to reflect the mood, ethos, and preoccupations” of the previous year and “rizz” emerged as the favourite after over 30,000 language lovers worldwide pared down the word soup to four finalists: rizz, Swiftie, prompt, and situationship.

Rizz up, darling!

In case you’re interested in a brief history of the etymology of how rizz might soon become mainstream, OUP explained that just as the fridge was from refrigerator and flu was from influenza, rizz (a noun), which can also be used as a verb, as in “to rizz up,” meaning to attract, seduce, or chat up), has its roots the word “charisma.”

I’m unsure which word might win OUP’s crown in 2024, but I have an in-vogue word slate that would be difficult to ignore.Perhaps lovers of language, especially millennials and Gen Z, the generational curators of these species of unusual words, might help crown a winner from my list for 2024 and share that list on any of my social media handles @azu ishiekwene or email [email protected] text Word of the Year to +234 805 210 0356.

The first candidate for me is “steeze.” I was confused the first time I heard it and couldn’t immediately determine its meaning. An English language coach and content creator on Quora, Jasveer Kaur, described “steeze” as “A slang term which is a mix of ‘style’ and ‘ease’, that means ‘looking effortlessly cool, i.e., charisma or grace.” It’s a cousin of rizz, or “composure”, another synonym for steeze from the Gen Z corpus.

The lit vs the ill-lit

And how about “lit?” When I first heard that someone was “lit”, I thought they were alight, literally burning! It turned out that I was hugely mistaken. “Lit”, I later found out, means something different. It’s a slang derived from African American Vernacular English, which gained popularity in the 2000s. It’s been around for quite a while, but somehow, the “ill-lit” like me never quite thought it would soon be making its way to the mainstream.

But thanks to hip-hop and pop culture, it has become a favourite expression among millennials and Gen Z. If you say, “The concert last night was lit,” for example, or “Her performance in the game was lit,” there’s nothing more to add. It’s the highest expression of excitement and enthusiasm. In the same way, my father’s highest compliment was “noble”, as in “You’ve done noble!”

Rizz, lit, and dope, I’m told, are in the same class, with ritz (derived from the ostentation of Ritz, the famous hotel and hospitality brand) being at the higher end of the word spectrum.

Who’s the simp?

How about “simp”? It’s not exactly a new word. It has evolved, losing five original letters in the process, butgaining new meaning and currency with TikTokers. Back in the day, that word used to be “simpleton”, a man or woman generally thought or believed to be naïve, foolish.Hip-hop culture in the mouth of younger adults gave it a makeover.

They twisted it against men today, and now a simp is often used to describe a man who is overly anxious to please women. This seems to be the opposite of “demure,” a word formerly used to describe modesty in young ladies but now repurposed to convey cuteness in both sexes.

Instead of the ‘50-50 Love’,Teddy Pendergrasscrooned about in his famous album, a “simp” is a man who doesn’t mind five percent or less back for his affection and empathy in exchange for 100 percent. He is if you get my drift, a woman wrapper.

If you are already “vibing”, millennial-speak for “losing oneself in great music or conversation”, or feeling “shook”, the colloquial noun or verb for “surprise”, then welcome to the evolving vocab world of young adults fostered by the Internet. From activism to fashion, sports and dating, the language topography is changing, leaving older adults in a trail of incomprehensible slang.

Simply steeze

In the slang line-up for 2024, anyways, steeze, lit, rizz, vibing, shook, and simp are in the race. But the stage would be incomplete without “ghost” (to suddenly stop communicating with someone, as in ‘he ghosted me after our last meeting’), “no cap”, (the damn truth, no embellishment), as in ‘petrol prices will never return to N470/litre, no cap, or “snack”, (someone attractive, as in ‘she’s looking like a snack in that outfit’).

While these words have a global resonance, one would undoubtedly be at the top of your final list if you were a Nigerian young adult—at home or in the Diaspora: “E choke!” The harsher, more menacing version is “Hunger dey!” However, this latter expression has a broader application and is quite popular among older adults.

When young Nigerian adults say, “E choke,”theyexpress the country’s severe economic hardship. This hardship has left many of them unable to have that sharwama or pizza, fix the braids they’d love to, or even chat for a long without resorting to data mincing.

This ethos was expressed in the streets of many Nigerian states in August, when protesters, mostly angry youths, staged demonstrations captioned #Endbadgovernance, the lightning rod for economic hardship. But the word is used in more than one sense. It also conveys overwhelming pleasure, as in “Give me more, even if it kills me!”

E choke!

My five finalists for the words that most captured younger adults’ moods, feelings, imagination, and ethos in 2024 are e choke, steeze, no cap, vibing, and composure. I struggled to get the language tool on my laptop to accept these words. I had to overwrite them many times to retain them, as I wondered how examination bodies, like the West African Examination Council (WAEC), would cope with this lexical insurgency.

Is it an indication of the distance these words still have to travel in the transition from fad to mainstream? Or is society just too slow to catch up? No matter, as they say in millennia-speak, las, las, culture, language, and tool developers would be alright.

Dele Farotimi: LP Reps Caucus Demands  Judicial Neutrality

0
Dele Farotimi

The Labour Party Caucus in the House of Representatives has called for judicial neutrality, impartiality and fair hearing in the contentious defamation case brought against human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi by Chief Afe Babalola, SAN.

The Caucus expressed deep concerns over the growing trend of anti-democratic activities and developments that undermine Nigeria’s civil governance.

Referencing the recent controversial arrest and imprisonment of Barrister Farotimi, who is facing allegations of defamation initiated by Babalola, the leader of the LP Caucus, Afam Ogene, in a statement, on Thursday, December 5, said that democracy is under threat when democratic institutions are manipulated against the people by highly placed individuals.

According to Hon. Ogene, the manner the embattled lawyer was arrested in a gestapo style from his office in Lagos state, and the harassment of members of staff of his law office, has sparked worries about the erosion of democratic principles and the silencing of dissenting voices in Nigeria.

He emphasized that “The judiciary remains the last bastion of hope for all citizens in a democratic society, as such, it is imperative that the judiciary upholds the principles of impartiality and neutrality at all times, regardless of the social status or connections of any party involved in a dispute before it.

“The Labour Party Caucus is committed to upholding the values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, and in this regard we call on the authorities involved in this controversial case to ensure that Barrister Farotimi’s rights and privileges are not denied.

“We also demand that the embattled lawyer be given fair hearing, and not made to suffer from any manipulated processes, as was alleged by him in a statement before his forceful arrest and subsequent imprisonment.”

Barrister Farotimi had previously alleged in a press conference that a court process was initiated against him without his knowledge. He claimed that a bench warrant was issued for his arrest, ostensibly for failing to appear in court.

Farotimi maintained that these actions were part of a deliberate and fraudulent scheme to manipulate the judicial process, ultimately leading to his arrest and imprisonment.

The Nigeria Bar Association NBA, had condemned the development, adding that “These actions constitute a troubling breach of the rule of law and the sanctity of the legal profession.”

Dele Farotimi: A Revolutionary Voice For Justice And Unity

Dele Farotimi

By Valentine Obienyem

I am proud of Dele Farotimi. He was actually my senior at LASU, where he left his revolutionary footprints. I have followed him lately and can see that the passion for a new Nigeria burns brightly in him.

I love him greatly because of the foregoing – essentially his patriotic and revolutionary credentials.

I also admire the way, driven by his love for justice, he dares to defend the Igbos against injustice. Because of this – his defence of the Igbo- people like Uncle Joe Igbokwe loathe him with passion. See what Joe reposted on his wall and say “Tufiakwa” to the man!

Now, read Uncle Joe:

“Tyranny of the mob. Am really scared for the kind of future we are building for Nigeria.

We now have different kinds of so called activists who say just anything to malign the reputation of people and when those people complain, the social media mob will harrass and bully them endlessly.

The new hero of Nigerians VDM said uncompromising things about Femi Falana and when Falana sought redress they threatened to kill his wife and children and burn down his house.

A guy called Darlington started harrasing Burna Boy and his mum saying all kinds of terrible things and when BB got the police to arrest him the social media mob ran amock.

This man Dele Farotimi is used to saying all kinds of bombastic things on national TV. If care is not taken, some Nigerians will start taking laws into their hands and we may soon start hearing that people are kpaid because of things like this. We cannot have a society where people use their free speech to destroy the lives of others. We must all allow this case to go through the legal process. It’s becoming too much..  majority of the people insulting Afe Babalola have not even read the book or the charge.

Hardly do they know it’s a criminal libel case.”

Tax Bill: Paid Agents Trying To set North Against Tinubu

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President

Reno Omokri, a former Presidential aide says the anger in the northern part of the country over the Tax Reform Bill is not an attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to him, the reactions from the other parts of the country against the leaders of the north who have spoken against the controversial bill is unjustified, condidering that the region played a huge role in the election of President Tinubu last year.

The magazine reported that the tax bill sent by the President Tinubu to the National Assembly in September has been trailed with mixed reactions from Nigerians, between those who have endorsed it in the southern Nigeria and those who opposed it in the north.

Key religious and government officials  from the northern part of the country, such as the Northern Governors Forum, NGF, have openly criticized the Tax Bill which they said will short change the region in terms of sharing of resources.

Leaders from the south have fought back, accusing the north for trying to hold other parts of the country into ransom for their allege selfish interest.

Reacting to the clash across the regions, Omokri, a former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan said the bill should not be allowed  to divide the country.

He also explained that the north does not hate the president contrary to some suggestions, considering that the region played a huge role in his ascension to power. Tinubu could not have become president without the support he received form the region during the contested 2023 Presidential election, according to the social critic.

Apart from Tinubu, other southern leaders who had contested the presidency in the past including the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola- the presumed winner of the 1993 presidential election, and General Olusegun Obasanjo (rtd) received huge support from the region, at the expense of candidates from the region who also contested.

The statement said in part: “Northern Nigeria is the only region in Nigeria that has given majority votes to a non-Northerner in an election where a fellow Northerner was a major candidate. Not an ‘I also contested’. I mean a major candidate with a realistic chance of victory.

“They have done it twice and each of those times, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu played a significant role.

“On June 12, 1993, Chief Moshood Abiola won in most Northern states, including Kano, where he got 52.3% of the votes to Bashir Tofa’s 47.7%. Incidentally, Tofa was from Kano.

“Chief Abiola also won in Kaduna, with 52.2% of the votes, Jigawa, with a stunning 60.7%, Borno, with 54.4%, and Yobe, with an overwhelming 63.6.%.

“In all, Chief Abiola won in nine out of sixteen Northern States.

“The second time this occurred was on Saturday, February 25, 2023, when President Tinubu secured 2,652,824 votes from the Northwest, which is more than three hundred thousand votes above the 2,279,407 he got from the Southwest.

“That meant that the President won the election in the Northwest by 39.64% of the votes. He also polled 1,760,993 votes in the North-central, making him the winner there with 38.58% of the total votes.

“President Tinubu won the #NigerianElections2023 by winning in the Northwest, North-Central and Southwest. His closest rival, Waziri Atiku Abubakar, won in one region, the Northeast, where he comes from. Peter Obi won in two areas: the Southeast and Southwest-South.

“From the above, any reasonable person can see that the facts do not support the claims flying about that the North hates the President and the Southwest. After all, the best judge of the present and the future is the past. And Arewa has more than proved itself a dependable friend and ally of the Southwest.

“Northerners are not cowards. They do not vote for who they do not support.

“That is why I urge all Nigerians to be aware of the fact that there is actually a large-scale false flag operation on social media, where certain persons have created multiple fake profiles to set the North, especially the core North, against the Southwest by promoting fake theories, such as that the Tax Reform Bill is anti-North and the North is anti-Tinubu. “

Following the calls for more consultations, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has been directed by the president  to meet the NAS to iron out the contested areas.

The NASS had earlier suspended debate over the issue to allow  for robust consultations among key stakeholders in the country.

Ndigbo in Rivers state has vowed to resist any attempt to deny them the opportunity to produce the president of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

The development comes following the search for the successor of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of the group who died on July 25, 2024.

As the search for his successor continues, Igbo in Rivers state have make a case for one of their own to be the next Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General, saying it’s their turn.

The call was made by the Alaigbo Development Foundation, ADF, in a statement issued on Wednesday by the president of the group Coleman Chukwudelunzu.

The group said it will resist internal and external influences to ensure that the dream, for one of their own to lead the umbrella body of Igbo worldwide is realised, the quest whih it said is in line with the Ohanaeze Ndigbo constitution.
