Rivers Sole Administrator Sad Over Head of Service’s Resignation, Removes SSG

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas

By Adesina Soyooye

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (rtd), has made two key appointments to kick-start his Administration.

This is even as he expressed sadness over the resignation of the Head of Service, Dr. George Nweke.  It is not confirmed, yet, if Nweke, a distinguished Civil Servant, was asked to quit or if he did so on his own volition. But Ibas, who has accepted his resignation, expressed sadness over it, and thanked him for his contributions to his one-week old Administration.

He appointed, in the interim, Dr. Mrs Iyingi Brown, Permanent Secretary, Welfare, Office of the Head of Service, as the Acting Head of Service.

The Sole Administrator who  met with the Executive Council Members of the State on Monday, also, announced the appointment of  Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika as the  new Secretary to the State Government, SSG.

In a statement, the Government said Professor Worika’s appointment followed “a rigorous selection process that considered his impressive credentials and extensive experience in academia, international legal practice and high level policy advisory roles.”

He replaces  Tammy Wenike Danagogo who was SSG under suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Danagogo’s replacement was no surprise

as the suspended Members of the House of Assembly were up in arms against him as they were against Fubara. Incidentally, he was also SSG under Wike.

It is not known yet if Ibas will dissolve the State Executive Council, as well, or work with members, at least, for now.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu declared an initial six months State of Emergency in Rivers State in a bid to arrest the political crisis which engulfed the State over the bitter political disagreement between Governor Fubara and his estranged political godfather and predecessor, now Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The President appointed Ibas as Sole Administrator, and suspended Fubara and Members of the State House of Assembly from office.

Presidency Descends On Peter Obi

“When people were fighting for democracy, Gregory (Obi) was buying and selling” – Bwala

For saying that democracy has collapsed in Nigeria, the Presidency has descended on Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General Elections.

Obi, also, a two-term Governor of Anambra State spoke on Monday in Abuja at a Colloquium to mark the 60th birthday of a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, who was, also, for eight months, the Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Emeka Ihedioha.

Obi, who took a look at where Nigeria was, what it was before now, compared it to a storey building which had been solidly raised to the first floor, only for it to be knocked down to ground zero by somebody. His summation: Democracy has gone in Nigeria. It has fallen. It has gone to the dogs. It has collapsed.

Stung by Obi’s brutal assessment, especially, made before a very distinguished audience, two Presidential Aides, Daniel Bwala and Bayo Onanuga have descended on him.

In a response on Tuesday, Bwala, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Policy, dismissed Obi as a failed Politician who does not even understand the meaning of democracy. Obi, he said, has no history of democratic activism.

In a post on his X handle, Bwala rapped: “It is funny how failed politicians are trying to redefine democracy. @PeterObi said democracy has collapsed. Does he even know the meaning of democracy?

“When people were fighting for democracy, Gregory was buying and selling.

“He doesn’t have a history of democratic activities from his school days to date.

“His expertise lies in instigating hate speech and vitriol.

“Talk is cheap”.

Following same pattern, Onanuga, Presidential Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, accused Obi of playing to the gallery.

In a post on his X handle Onanuga said Obi wouldn’t have been able to speak the way he spoke at Ihedioha’s Colloquium if democracy had collapsed in Nigeria.

Onanuga: “I listened multiple times to former Governor Peter Obi’s statement in this clip where he claims that democracy has collapsed in Nigeria.

“His hyperbolic remarks, suited for headlines, have been made without deep reflection, and lack a solid logical foundation.

“Only a discontented and disgruntled Peter who benefits from the very free speech democracy provides could perceive such a democratic downfall through his lens.

“If democracy had indeed collapsed as Peter claims, and we were living under a regime antithetical to democratic principles, he would not have been able to make his comments on Monday.

“I will urge him to watch what he says and restrain himself from playing to the gallery.”

Obi, unarguably, say not a few people, is the face of opposition in Nigeria today.

Rep Ogene Denies Promising To Build Mosque In Ogbaru

…only pledged support at removing impediments militating against adherents having a place of worship

Afam Victor Ogene, representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has described as misleading, the media report that the legislator promised to build a central mosque in Ogbaru. “This is NOT correct; at best, it is a misrepresentation of what really transpired,” the lawmaker said in a statement.

The statement by Chinedu Uwolloh, Chief of Staff to Ogene: “Last Friday, March 21, 2025, Hon. Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency visited Ogbeukwu, community within his federal constituency, to observe Iftar(the traditional breaking of fast) with the muslim faithful and in the course of the interactions that followed, the Chief Imam of the area, Abdulmajeed Oniyan, lamented about their frustrations in acquiring land to build a place of worship. He also implored the legislator to ensure that his people benefit from the several empowerment programmes that his Constituency Office routinely undertook.”

Uwolloh explained that while responding to the requests of the Imam, Hon. Ogene immediately directed his staff to ensure that the muslim faithful are carried along in subsequent programmes, whilst promising to assist the community in removing all impediments militating against securing land for their mosque project.

Ogene was quoted to have said at the meeting, “Between now and next year, if God keeps us alive, I shall endeavour to see that all obstacles standing against acquiring land for your mosque project are tackled.

“Our people live in the North and in the West and we are allowed to do our businesses and worship freely, so if you desire to build a place of worship, we shall assist you do so,” Hon. Ogene said.

Speaking further, Uwolloh said,
“How this pledge to assist, suddenly turned into a ‘promise to build’ is clearly unfathomable.

“A day earlier, Hon. Ogene had visited the Hausa community at Kara, where he highlighted the coincidence of the Christian lenten and the Muslim Ramadan periods holding simultaneously, noting that it was a poignant reminder that both faiths worship the same supreme God.

“He then announced plans to drill a borehole and provide solar streetlights, as a demonstration of his commitment to the well-being and development of the area.

“At both places, Hon. Ogene donated cash and an array of food items, including rice, indomie, sugar and beverages.

Natasha Remains Defiant: ‘I Stand Firm’; Will Never Apologise To Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio order eviction of Senator Natasha Akpoti

Embattled Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has denied the claim that she apologised to the Nigerian Senate over her allegation against Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President.

The Kogi Central Senator debunked the report in a statement issued on Monday, saying her allegations against Akpabio stands, and nothing will stop her from pursuing justice to the end.

According to her, the reports were from those bent on ensuring that  she’s prevented from seeing her sexual allegation case against the senate president to a logical conclusion, describing those allegedly behind the reports as desperadoes wanting to ‘silent’ her.

“I stand firm in my resolve to never apologise for speaking my truth,” she declared. “The desperation to silence me is palpable, but I will not be intimidated. The games being played in full view of Nigerians will be exposed, and those who have hijacked our institutions will be held accountable,” she said.

The magazine reported that senator was suspended for six months, two days after she had a shouting match with Akpabio in the chamber of the Nigerian Senate.

The brawl between her and Akpabio however took another dimension  after the embattled Natasha accused the former governor of Akwa Ibom state of sexual harassment. Akpabio has denied the allegation.

Two weeks ago, the senator took her case to the International Parliamentary Union,IPU where she accused Akpabio and the Senate of trying to silence her because she is a woman.

The IPU said it will investigate the matter.

US Coast Guards Commends Nigeria’s Implementation Of Port Security Code

NIMASA-USCG

The United States Coast Guard has commended Nigeria, and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, for what the Coast Guard described as considerable progress in the implementation of the International Ships and Ports Facility Security, ISPS Code.

This was made public by Joe Prince Larson of the US Coast Guard who led a team from the International Port Security Programme on a Working Tour of some Terminals and Ports in Nigeria to ascertain the level of implementation of the ISPS Code across Nigerian ports facilities. The team had earlier conducted assessment visits to the Dangote Port and Lekki Free Trade Zones in Lekki, Lagos State, as well as private port facilities operated by Matrix and Julius Berger in Warri, Delta State.

While delivering an interim assessment report to NIMASA Management, Larson noted that Nigeria’s compliance with the ISPS Code ranks amongst the best globally.

He added that his team would report their findings to the leadership of the US Coast Guard accordingly and expressed confidence that NIMASA had the capacity to maintain the high standards attained to date.

According to Mr. Larson, “We had the pleasure of visiting Matrix and Julius Berger in Warri, Delta State before proceeding to the Lekki Deep Seaport and Dangote Port in Lagos, with the overall assessment being very positive. We noted that there is a clear and deep understanding on the implementation of the ISPS Code in Nigeria with the level of compliance observed to be at par with some of the best maritime nations globally. We would report our findings back to US Coast Guard headquarters accordingly.”

On his part, the NIMASA DG, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, spoke about the Agency’s commitment to sustaining the improved compliance levels at the nation’s ports while noting the effect this has on how Nigeria is perceived internationally. He added that the Agency would continue to support efforts under the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, to improve standards in the Nigerian maritime industry.

According to him, “I must express my happiness at the positive feedback we have received from the USCG delegation as it serves as reward for the Federal Government’s commitment to the develop of the sector, and the work of the Agency, under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, to ensure international standards are adhered to in the area of port security”.

How President Yar’adua Sent Soldiers To Secure  My Safety At Abuja Airport – Peter Obi

By Adesina Soyooye

“President Obasanjo, PDP, begged the House of Assembly Members not to impeach me, an APGA Governor. He sent emissaries. And, I was in my house when I heard I won my case to claim my mandate as the elected Governor Governor. I paid not even one Naira to any Court.”

Two-term Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, in Abuja, on Monday, revealed how both Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and late Umaru Yar’adua worried about him and safety while he was battling the powers-that-be in Anambra State to keep his Governorship seat.

Obi, who was the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Presidential Election spoke in Abuja at a Colloquium to mark the 60th Birthday of a former Governor of Imo State, who was, also, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, The Rt. Honourable Emeka Ihedioha.

At the overwhelmingly well-attended event which saw very high profile Politicians, Diplomats, Clerics and Stakeholders in the Nigerian Project present, Obi compared how then President Obasanjo handled him when he was impeached by Members of the State House of Assembly during his first term in office to what seems to be happening in Nigeria now. He headed to Court and was reinstated.

He also compared the workings of the Judiciary then and now.

Obi disclosed that when the Anambra House of Assembly Members began their impeachment moves against him, it was President Obasanjo who took it upon himself to beg them not to impeach him. Obasanjo, he said, sent emissaries, including former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, to try to dissuade the Assembly members from impeaching him.

And when he was, finally, impeached inspite of Obasanjo’s efforts, President Obasanjo called to find out about his well- being.

In comparing the situation now and then, Obi regretted that it is the President who is encouraging the impeachment of the Governor.

Talking about how the Judiciary handled his case, Obi disclosed that he paid no kobo to any Court to win his case and wondered if that is still the case now.

Obi: “I became a Governor through the Courts when President Obasanjo and Atiku were in office. I did not pay the Court One Naira. I was sitting in my house, in my office when the Court declared me winner.

“When I was being impeached, the President sent people to come and intervene on my behalf, begging the Assembly members not to impeach me. Today, the President is impeaching the person.”

For the records, at the time, Obi noted, he was of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, while Obasanjo was of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Obi, also, talked about his experience with the late President Umaru Yar’adua.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had conducted an election for the Governorship seat when Obi had stayed only about a year or less in office after reclaiming his mandate from Dr. Chris Ngige, and declared Chief Andy Uba, winner in an election Obi refused to participate in.

Obi went to Court to say he was elected for a four-year term, and that INEC had no business to conduct an election when he had not spent four  years in office. He said according to the Constitution, he was entitled to his four years in office.

He won the case and, Uba, who had been sworn-in was sacked, after only two weeks in office.

Obi said he was in London when he won the case to return to his office as Governor. He revealed that as soon as he won the case, Yar’adua, who was  President, called him immediately and asked him to come back. However, he expressed his fears that he was afraid something could happen to him if he returned immediately.

To his surprise, President Yar’adua asked him to send his flight details from London to Abuja. He did as soon as he bought his ticket. On arrival in Abuja, Obi said he was shocked that President Yar’adua had deployed soldiers to the Airport to receive him and secure his safety.

Again, for the records, the sacked Andy Uba was of the same Party with Yar’adua – PDP.

Fubara Copied From The Bad Books Of Obaseki – By Bayo Onanuga

0
Simi Fubara and Godwin Obaseki

Imagine a Rivers State where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hesitated to declare a state of emergency. The political standoff between the State Assembly and Governor Siminalayi Fubara could have continued and degenerated into violence. Impeachment threats might have spurred attacks on lawmakers by the governor’s supporters, while militants in the creeks—primed to sabotage critical oil infrastructure—could have plunged Nigeria’s oil production back to pre-2023 lows. Sensational reporting of the crisis by journalists and opportunistic litigation would have inflamed tensions further, paralysing governance and risking lives. Schools and hospitals would shutter; investors would flee. We can only imagine the human and economic toll.

Today, thanks to the president’s intervention, Rivers State can breathe again. Political tensions have eased, banal headlines have quietened, and stakeholders—encouraged by the newly-appointed administrator—are charting a path to lasting peace. Critics who argue the crisis “did not yet warrant” emergency rule ignore a stark truth: waiting for the breakdown of law and order to escalate into anarchy before acting is like withholding firefighters until a house burns to ashes.

A responsible leader like President Tinubu, who swore an oath to protect the constitution and corporate existence of the country, can not fail to act when a constituent part of the Federation is careering towards the precipice. The political crisis in Rivers State between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the State House of Assembly who owe allegiance to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, that blew open barely six months into the administration of the Governor has degenerated by 18 March. A chain of events since the war of attrition started 14 months ago among the combatants had indeed paralysed the government of Rivers State to the point where Fubara, copying from the bad book of former Governor Obaseki in Edo, emasculated an arm of government entirely. This reality informed the Supreme Court’s damning verdict about the absence of government in the State as enshrined in the 1999 constitution of Nigeria, as amended. The court also excoriated Fubara for acting like a despot.

Bayo Onanuga
Author: Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and  Strategy.

Rivers was in a grave situation, as the combatants refused to allow reason to prevail, even after the Supreme Court judgment,  before President Tinubu declared a state of emergency on 18 March. The President took action in the best interest of the people of the State, who had become victims of the warring politicians, the people they elected to serve them. President Tinubu needed to act. He chose prevention over cure.

Section 305 of Nigeria’s Constitution empowers the President to act when the nation faces a breakdown of law, order, and economic security —precisely the case in Rivers, a bastion of Nigeria’s oil-dependent economy. Intelligence confirmed militants, told by Fubara to await signals, were already targeting pipelines, risking a collapse in output and a Niger-Delta domino effect. Historical precedents, such as the past emergencies in Plateau and Borno and the doctrine of necessity, support the President’s proactive measures to avert disaster. The President’s oath demands he must not fail in his sacred duty to safeguard national stability, not watch idly as partisan strife strangles our democracy and the material well-being of Nigerians, whose prosperity depends on the social and economic interdependence of every part of the country. Rivers State is a significant hydrocarbon economic artery in Nigeria, and any dislocation and politically motivated disruption of the oil industry in the state will have ripple effects on the national economy.

Answering the Critics:

Critics claim the emergency rule in Rivers undermines democracy. Their position misrepresents reality. The intervention is temporary, surgical, and aimed at restoring—not replacing—democratic institutions. The suspension of political actors for six months is no power grab; it is not a permanent removal but a reset to disarm warring factions. Notably, the same critics who assailed the President’s action for suspending the political actors remain silent on Governor Fubara’s refusal to collaborate with the legislature, exposing their partisan bias. Democracy can not thrive amid lawlessness—anarchy is its antithesis.

The appointed administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (Rtd.), has already convened a meeting with traditional leaders in the State as one of his first steps to forge lasting solutions. This intervention ensures Rivers’ people retain their democratic rights while shielding the Nigerian and Rivers State economies from collapse. It is worth repeating that President Tinubu acted within the law and his executive powers under the constitution until the  Supreme Court says otherwise.

President Tinubu and the National Assembly remain committed to lifting the emergency once stability returns and also ensuring elected officials resume their duties.

The 18th-century English philosopher Edmund Burke once warned, “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” President Tinubu chose courage over complacency. His action prioritised Nigeria’s interest over political expediency, averting a more profound crisis. To those who brand him a democrat turned “tyrant,” my response to them is simple:  Which democracy prospers in chaos? Rivers’ newfound calm vindicates President Tinubu’s resolve. He deserves commendation, not condemnation, not calumny for his statesmanship. Rivers and Nigeria are safer for it.

Ondo Police Command Arrests, Prosecutes Fake Retired US Military Officer

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State Police Command said it has arrested a man, simply identified as Falade, for allegedly parading himself as a retired United States, (US) Military Officer, but later discovered to be untrue.

The Command, also, accused Falade and some of his followers of recently causing unrest at the Idogun community in Ose Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking with journalists in Akure, on Monday, the state Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, explained that the suspect was arrested and had been prosecuted in court, while the court  remanded him at a correctional centre in Akure.

“A report was made to this office of the activities of one Falade, who claimed to be a retired Navy Captain who served in the American military.

“For years now, Falade has been a terror in the Idogun Community, under the Ose Local Government. When this matter was brought to my attention, I called him with the intention of inviting him over to my office to give his own side of the story.

“What I received in response were unprintable words. Even at that height of provocation, I remained calm. Even when the matter was given to one of our tactical commanders to look into, when he invited him over, he called him stupid.

“That notwithstanding, I called for a peace meeting that took place in the police mess, which he attended. The chairman of Ose LG and other stakeholders from their community were there.

“All of them were enjoined to go back and maintain peace. Unfortunately, when he returned, instead of de-escalating tension, he escalated it.

“Now, this Falade in question goes about with fake passport and fake airforce personnel, who also joined him in perpetrating his nefarious activities.

“Just last week, a report came that some of the boys on the side of Falade, led by the same Falade, abducted some of the people going to the farm, confiscated their properties, went away with it, and I said I’ve had enough.”

The police boss further revealed that after Falade was arrested by his team, he was charged in court and later remanded into prison custody, but stated that after his arrest, another riot broke out again by his supporters.

“So, the SWAT team moved in and apprehended Falade, brought him to Akure, started an investigation, and in the course of the investigation, he was found criminally liable, and there were 10 count charges against him, and he was prosecuted accordingly.

“When the matter got to court, he was remanded at a correctional center, and the moment the people in the community heard this, they went riotous, made bonfire, cut a very big tree across the road, so we had to move in more men to go to that place.

“Now, in the course of trying to restore peace, one of our officers was given a machete cut on his head. But the area was later calmed by the policemen deployed in the town.”

Afolabi urged state residents to always employ lawful means to address any challenges in their communities rather than resorting to violence or illegalities
