Emergency Rule: Betara Admits Reps Received $5,000 as ‘Sallah Gesture,’ Not Bribe

Hon Mukhtar Aliyu Betara

By Gideon Njoku

In the midst of allegations of bribery against Members of the National Assembly to endorse the much criticized Emergency Rule imposed on Rivers State, a Member of the House of Representatives has admitted that each Member received the sum of $5,000  (five thousand US Dollars)

Hon. Mukhtar Aliyu Betara, Chairman House Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, admitted that each member of his Committee received that sum not as bribe to endorse  President Bola Tinubu’s Emergency Rule declaration in Rivers State but as Sallah Gift.

Betara was quoted by Jafaar Jafaar, an investigative Journalist, as clarifying to him that $5,000 was given to each Rep. Member as “Sallah Gesture”, not bribe.

According to Jafaar, the gesture Betara told him, has been the norm year after year.

In a post on his X page, Jaafar wrote:

“The Chairman of the House Committee on FCT, Mukhtar Aliyu Betara, has clarified to me that he only shared $5,000 with each member of his committee as a ‘Sallah gesture,’ not as an inducement to support emergency rule in Rivers State.

“According to him, he maintains the tradition—like Santa Claus—every year.

“As we say in Hausa, not thigh but hind leg.”

This clarification came following several speculations in the Social Media to the effect that each Member of the NASS received the sum of $15,000 bribe to endorse the proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

“I Have No Link With Any Militant Group” – Governor Fubara Insists

Governor Siminalayi Fubara

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Monday, March 24, 2025, distanced himself from the activities of militant groups, both within and outside Rivers state.

His denial is coming  against the backdrop of the reported  third oil facility explosion that affected the Soku oil Installation in Akuku ,Toru Local Council of the State in the early morning of Sunday March 23.

Before then, the beleaguered State had witnessed twin attacks on Trans Niger Pipeline in Bodo ,Gokana Local Government, and an oil facility in Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni Council in the second week of March.

The attacks were cited by President Bola Tinubu as part of the reasons for his decision to impose a State of Emergency on Rivers State.

While the President accused Governor Fubara of turning a blind eye to the sabotaging activities of the attackers of the oil facilities, his Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, pointedly, fingered the embattled Governor as an enabler of the explosions.

But, surprisingly, less than a week after easing out the Governor and installing a sole administrator, it was the same disturbing news of explosion that surfaced on Sunday, thus questioning the veracity of the President’s claim concerning the alleged complicity of Fubara.

In a statement issued on Monday by Nelson Chukwudi his Media Aide, Governor Fubara noted that contrary to the narrative being pushed in the Social Media, he has no direct or remote link with any militant group whose intent is to disrupt the fragile peace in Rivers.

“Our attention has, once again, been drawn to a flurry of malicious, fake and imaginary videos of purported explosions at oil and gas facilities in Rivers.

“Virtually all the fake videos have been linked to alleged militant groups in the State with the creators of such contents trying very hard to connect them to supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

“Already, the communities where these incidents are alleged to have occurred have reacted, dismissing any claims of explosions on oil gas facilities in their domains, and reassuring that critical Government assets within their areas are safe, secure and efficiently functioning.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has no link with any militant groups ,does not contemplate any such association ,and has no reason to encourage any criminal group or elements anywhere in the state ,or Niger Delta ,to undertake any action inimical to peace of the people ,or safety and security of oil and gas facilities and by extension ,the economy of the country.

“The Governor had repeatedly made it clear at every public event, that the peace of the State is Paramount to him, and that he would pay any price to secure and sustain peace in the State, as it is only in an atmosphere of  peace and security that governance and development can thrive.

“Governor Fubara vehemently warns purveyors of violence and economic sabotage to steer clear of the State, and any attempt to use his name or capitalize on the present political crisis to foment trouble in the state”, part of the statement reads.

Governor Fubara cautioned social media players on the need to eschew the tendencies to create tensions, chaos and anarchy in.Rivers state or any part of the Niger Delta Region.

He, similarly, urged Security Agencies to be alive to the  orchestrated moves by some forces to misinform the public, and portray the State in bad light.

EXCLUSIVE: Untold Story of How Rivers Emergency Rule Declaration Ended Wike’s Empire Ambition

Nyesom Wike and Simi Fubara and Bola Tinubu

By Akinjide Aina, Abuja Bureau Chief

This magazine has been  informed by sources conversant with the real undercurrents that birthed the March 18th state of emergency rule declared on River State by President Bola Tinubu that it was a deft political move to dilute the FCT Minister and the immediate past Governor of the State, Nyesom Wike’s political influence in the State, cut him to size, and permanently dismantle his ambition to foist a political empire in the South south and South east geopolitical zones.

Though still grateful to the FCT Minister for the role he played in his presidential victory in 2023- allegedly, brazenly switching the clear victory of Labour Party’s Peter Obi to his (Tinubu) and APC’s favour- President Tinubu, this Magazine was informed, was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with Wike’s abrasive behaviour, his growing political influence not just in Rivers but also in the South South Region, and his deep pocket.

The President, it was gathered, has started giving a thought to some of his close Aides advice to curtail Wike’s excesses before it gets out of hand. The said Aides, The Source (Magazine) was further told, had told the President that, with his deep pocket,  the FCT Minister is aggressively building an impregnable political nest cum empire in the South-south and South-east with the aim of grabbing the 2027 Presidential ticket of his (Wike) party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP to challenge him and was bent on getting his boys in the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Wike, however, has publicly declared, on a number of occasions, that he would support President Tinubu to the hilt for a second term in office.

“The public may not know this, Fubara supporters may not know this, and Governor Fubara himself may not also probably know this: The state of emergency was the suspended Rivers Governor’s saviour.

“If not for the State of Emergency, the River State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker,  Martin Amaewhule, on the instruction of Wike, would have impeached Fubara within weeks. Amaewhule would then become acting governor for three months after which Wike would either decide to ask him to run for the office of the Governor or to placate the Ijaw,  procure a pliant Ijaw candidate to run with him(Amaewhule) as Deputy”, a source familiar with the the FCT’s highwire intrigues to maintain a firm political grip on Rivers told the Magazine.

However, when that Tuesday afternoon intelligence reports of Wike’s political designs against Governor Fubara intelligence got to President Tinubu, fearing unpalatable repercussions, security-wise, of the impeachment of the governor, decided to move fast.

The President there and then decided to immediately thaw the situation, reduce Wike’s political  manoeuvres in the State, and save Fubara from humiliation- impeachment. Tinubu immediately, summoned to the Presidential villa, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas and the Service Chiefs and informed them of his decision to impose a state of emergency on Rivers that evening.

The lot fell on Senator Akpabio to relay the devastating news to Wike.

Informed a source close to the Pesidency: “Neither Wike nor his Assembly boys saw it coming. Wike did not pre-inform them as he only got to know after the Senate President had a meeting with the President, the President told him his next line of action as concerned Rivers State, sought his nomination for the position of Sole Administrator as the Number Three man in Nigeria and the Leader of the South-south Zone.

“The President then asked the Senate President to go and inform Wike of his intention and the Minister’s bewilderment at the turn of event could be gleaned by his grimace in some of the photos taken during the visit of the Senate President.

“However, to try to massage Wike’s ego and make it seem as if the emergency rule was a win for him, the President’s nation-wide broadcast was slanted to paint Fubara as the aggressor in the Rivers political upheaval”

Meanwhile, despite denying personal political interest in the emergency rule declaration, President Tinubu, the magazine has learnt, will be seeking to formally impose his party, the APC on Rivers as part of the moves to cement political tranquillity on the State.

“To further torpedo Wike’s overbearing political influence in Rivers State and to get Fubara firmly rooted in Rivers political firmament, the suspended Governor, at the end of the six months emergency rule, will be asked to defect to the APC and the Emeka Beke-led Rivers’ APC faction which is sympathetic to his Government will be recognised as the authentic party leadership in the State.

“This way, Fubara will not only become the APC leader in the state but the bluffing 27 Wike Assembly members would be forced to bow to his leadership”, a source revealed.

INEC Receives Recall of Natasha Akpoti

By Ayodele Oni

Despite subsisting Court injunction, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally confirmed receipt of the petition seeking the recall process of the senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The INEC Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, received the petition on Monday.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, had restrained INEC from receiving petitions to initiate a recall process against Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The presiding judge, Justice Isa Dashen, gave the order after listening to the application moved by the counsel for the applicants, Smart Nwachimere of West-Idahosa (SAN) & Co, last Friday.

The applicants – Anebe Jacob Ogirma, John Adebosi, Musa Adeiza, Ahmed Usman, and Maleek Yahaya – had through their counsel sued INEC for the recall process of Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The applicants prayed the court to order INEC not to receive any petition by purported members of Kogi Central Senatorial District for the purpose of initiating a recall process for Akpoti-Uduaghan, pending the determination of the motion on notice to the same effect.

The ex-parte application for the interim injunction was supported by an Affidavit of Extreme Urgency together with other court processes sworn to by Anebe Ogirima for himself and four others who are registered voters and constituents of Kogi Central Senatorial District.

Justice Dashen granted the application and ordered that the court order and motion on notice be served on INEC.

The judge fixed May 6 for the report of service and further mention of the case.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, has ordered an immediate probe into the jailbreak at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State.

Described as “unfortunate”, but the Minister has just assured Nigerians that all escaped inmates would be recaptured using advanced biometric technology and other security measures.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media, Babatunde Alao, Tunji-Ojo emphasised  Government’s determination to uncover the circumstances surrounding the prison break.

He also directed the Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi, to visit the facility and conduct a comprehensive security audit.

“We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation,” the Minister stated.

He further assured Nigerians that the authorities would leave no stone unturned in tracking down the fleeing inmates.

“All necessary measures, including our robust biometric database and existing technology solutions, will be deployed to recapture every escaped inmate,” he added.

The Minister however in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account,  reiterated his commitment to ensuring accountability within the correctional system.

“The jailbreak at Koton Karfe is unfortunate, but we will get to the root of it. We will not allow breaches like this to go unchecked. Every fugitive will be found and brought to justice,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, the Minister assured the public of strengthened security at Correctional Facilities across the country to prevent future occurrences.

He reaffirmed that the Nigerian Correctional Service would be held accountable for lapses and that corrective measures would be swiftly implemented.

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan: INEC Receives Recall Petition From Constituents

INEC Receives Recall of Natasha Akpoti

By Akinwale Kasali

Kogi Central Senatorial District Constituents have submitted a petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The petition was submitted on Monday, March 24, 2025.

It was signed by over 250,000 out of the 480,000 constituents.

This is more than the 50 Percent required to proceed with the recall process.

The submission of the petition comes barely three days after a Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, the Kogi State Capital, set aside an earlier ruling that restrained INEC from receiving the recall process.

The Federal High Court in a  judgement delivered in Lokoja on Friday affirmed that the recall process is constitutionally valid and aligns with the civic rights of the constituents.

The Court urged the Constituents to continue exercising their rights in an orderly and peaceful manner.

The development was after the Court had, on Thursday, granted an interim injunction restraining INEC, its staff, agents, privies or assigns from receiving, accepting or acting on any petition containing signatures of members of Kogi Central Senatorial District.

The Court, also, stopped INEC from conducting any referendum upon such petition for the purpose of initiating a recall process of suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria pending the determination of the Motion on Notice to the same effect.

The Court also granted the application following an ex-parte application for interim supported by an Affidavit of Extreme urgency together with other court processes sworn to by Anebe Jacob Ogirima for himself and four others who are registered voters and constituents of Kogi Central Senatorial District of Kogi State.

Smart Nwachimere, Counsel to the applicant, argued that the recall petitions contained fictitious signatures from purported Constituents.

The injunction restrained INEC, its staff, and agents from receiving or accepting recall petitions with fake signatures and conducting any referendum based on such petitions.

The case was adjourned to May 6, 2025, for further mentioning.

A security breach has led to the escape of 12 inmates from one of the Correctional Centres in  in Kogi State early Monday morning

Kogi State Government has confirmed the jail break, in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo.

He commended the swift response of security agencies to the jailbreak at the Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe. One of the escapees has, allegedly, been arrested.

Fanwo described the incident as “unfortunate” and assured citizens that the State government is taking decisive steps to prevent a recurrence.

He stated that the Kogi State government would work with security agencies to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns.

“This calls for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, arrest the fleeing inmates, and identify possible saboteurs within the system.”

Fanwo added that Governor Ahmed  Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with the Federal Correctional Centre and other security agencies to ensure such security breaches do not happen again.

The State Government has, also, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting federal security agencies through logistics and other necessary resources to enhance their operational effectiveness.

While investigations continue, the government has assured residents that the situation is under control.

“There is no cause for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities as normal, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority.”
