Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has said that the victory of Nigeria’s women team, Super Falcons, against their Morocco counterpart, Atlas Lionesses, has rekindled the county’s national pride.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria on Saturday, July 26, 2025, beat their Morocco counterparts, Atlas Lionesses 3-2 to lift the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations trophy, the 10th time in the series.
Governor Uzodimma in a statement he personally took to his social media handle to issue after the encounter, was not only proud of the performance of the entire Super Falcons team and their handlers, but extolled the superlative performance of his Imo State daughters in the team – Chiamaka Nnadozie, Michelle Chinwendu Alozie and Osinachi Ohale – who contributed in no small measures in making our country proud.
Super Falcons
Governor Uzodimma’s statement read in full:
“On behalf of the Government and good people of Imo State, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Super Falcons of Nigeria on their glorious victory at the #TotalEnergiesWAFCON2024, emerging as the undisputed Champions of Africa.
“A special commendation goes to our own illustrious daughters, Chiamaka Nnadozie, for clinching the Best Goalkeeper award, to Michelle Chinwendu Alozie and Osinachi Ohale, for their outstanding performance.
“They continue to be shining examples of excellence and resilience, making Imo State and Nigeria immensely proud. Their outstanding performance inspires our younger generations, and we salute them as true role models.
“We eulogize our indefatigable players for their energy, resilience, and unity, which played a vital role in this triumphant journey. We also applaud the Technical and Management Team for their strategic leadership.
“This well-deserved victory answers the call of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his goodwill message to the Team ahead of the finals, and rekindles national pride. As you soar, know that Nigeria stands solidly behind you.”
First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who stayed glued to a television set in the Presidential Villa to watch the Super Falcons of Nigeria defeat the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco in the finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON, took to her feet to celebrate the girls as soon as the final whistle went off to end the heart-thumping match.
The Nigerian Girls who were two goals down in the first half, made a remarkable comeback from behind to defeat the Host Country by three goals to two.
Taking to her X page to celebrate the Super Falcons, she expressed pride in the girls’ stunning victory, and called them “The Queens of African Football.”
She posted: “I celebrate you, our beautiful and lovely Super Falcons, for the landmark victory of your 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Championship.
“Your resounding 3-2 victory is, indeed, remarkable and commendable. It is not just another trophy; it is a testament to your hard work, consistency and the indomitable Nigerian spirit. We thank God for this sweet victory.
“You have, once again, lifted the pride of our dear nation, Nigeria, and cemented your place as Queens of African Football.
“On behalf of Nigerian women and the entire nation, I thank you for making us proud. You have written your names in gold and inspired millions across the continent.
“Congratulations Super Falcons. I celebrate you. Nigeria celebrates you.”
President Tinubu, First Lady Oluremi, celebrate Team’s triumph
For the first 45 minutes of the match on Saturday evening, July 26, 2025, it was all quiet in Nigeria. Everybody, almost, wore a long face. Not for nothing. The Country’s Female Football Team, the Super Falcons, was being beaten in the finals of the Women African Cup of Nations, WAFCON, finals by the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco, the host country.
Nigeria was two goals down. But it, finally, ended in praise when miraculously, Nigeria defeated Morocco to lift the WAFCON Cup for the 10th time.
An excited President Bola Tinubu and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, both led the millions of joyous Nigerians to celebrate the victory.
In a video call to the triumphant girls, the President assured them they would be celebrated.
To carry the day, the Nigerian girls survived the first half scare, and snatched victory from the lion’s mouth.
In the first half when Nigeria was two goals down, not a few people had lost hope.
The Moroccans had taken the lead in the 12th minute courtesy of Team Captain Ghizlane Chebbak. It upped it in the 23rd minute when Mssoudy, wearing Jersey number 18, doubled the lead.
But in the second half, the Nigerian spirit of never-say-die surfaced in full force. The Super Falcons returned in a superb manner. This paid off in the 64th minute through a penalty kick superbly tucked in by playmaker Esther Okoronkwo.
In the 71st minute, Ijamilusi sent the Nigerian camp agog when she latched unto a pass from Esther Okoronkwo, and gave Nigeria the equaliser.
The crown came in the 88th minute when Joy Echegini netted in a free kick, again, taken by Esther Okoronkwo to give Nigeria a 3 -2 win over the hard-fighting Atlas Lionesses.
This third goal triggered an unprecedented celebration in the Nigerian Camp as well as back home, and heaped tears and weeping on the Moroccan Camp.
With that, Nigeria secured its 10th victory in WAFCON.
Not surprisingly, Super Falcons Esther Okoronkwo won the CAF/TOTAL ENERGIES Woman of the Match Award. Nigeria’s Goal keeper, Cynthia Chiamaka Nnadozie won the Best Goalkeeper Award of the Tournament, while Super Falcons Captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, left Morocco with the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player Award.
Morocco’s Lionesses did not go home empty handed. Aside from the Silver Medal, its 35-year old Captain, Chebbak won the Tournament’s Golden Boot Award for scoring a total of five goals.
With a- 54.2% Ball Possession Super Falcons has won in the 10 WAFCON Finals the team participated in.
The Super Falcons went into the finals with a huge support from Nigeria. President Bola Tinubu, in a personally signed statement, told the girls to bring the trophy back home as the country was waiting and rooting for them. He also sent a high profile Federal Government delegation made up, mainly, of Female Cabinet members. First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu urged then to come home with the cup, and so did Peter Obi, Labour Party Presidential Candidate in 2023 who told the girls to exhibit discipline, resilience and come home with the cup.
Ghana, earlier, on Friday, beat South Africa in the third place Match to clinch the Bronze Medal.
A Local Government Chairman in Niger State has dragged the State Governor to Court for reducing tenure of Local Council officials.
Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area, Alhaji Aminu Yakubu-Ladan, approached the Court over the alleged reduction of the tenure of elected Local Government Chairmen and Councillors.
The State Electoral body had fixed November 1, 2025, for the conduct of Local Government polls across the State.
In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1370/2025, filed by his counsel, Chris Udeoyibo, the plaintiff listed the Attorney-General of Niger State, the State House of Assembly, NSIEC, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the Inspector-General of Police as first to fifth defendants.
Yakubu-Ladan is challenging the constitutionality of Section 29(2) of the Niger State Local Government Law, 2001 (as amended), which reduces the tenure of local government chairmen and councillors from four years to three years.
He argued that the said law contradicts the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022, both of which guarantee a four-year tenure for elected local government officials.
The plaintiff posed eight legal questions before the court, including whether the state government has the power to enact a law that conflicts with federal legislation and the Constitution.
He is also seeking a declaration that the conduct of fresh elections before the end of the constitutionally guaranteed four-year term is illegal, and urged the court to restrain the NSIEC from proceeding with the November 1 elections.
Additionally, the suit is asking the court to bar INEC and the Inspector-General of Police from providing support or security for the planned elections until the current tenure elapses.
Yakubu-Ladan insisted that the state’s action is a breach of Section 7 of the Constitution and Sections 018 and 150 of the Electoral Act, 2022. The case is yet to be assigned to a judge.
Lagosians have expressed concern and over the announcement made by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC, of a 25-day power outage that will affect parts of Lagos State and surrounding areas under its network.
The EKEDC, in a notice shared over the weekend via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, said the blackout will begin on Monday, July 28, and continue daily until Thursday, August 21, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Company explained that the outage is necessary to allow the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, carry out critical maintenance on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line.
“During this period, residents should expect intermittent electricity supply and load shedding across the Eko Disco network,” the statement read.
The affected areas include several communities and business hubs within the EKEDC coverage zone, which includes parts of Lagos Island, Lekki, Festac, Apapa, and Surulere, among others.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, have lashed Kemi Badenoch, United Kingdom Conservative Party Leader, for her recent lies against Nigeria.
Badenoch had, in a recent interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, asserted that she cannot pass on her Nigerian citizenship to her children because of her gender.
She suggested that it is easier for Nigerians to acquire British citizenship than for foreigners to become Nigerians.
Reacting to the claim Dabiri-Erewa, speaking as a guest on Channels Television Saturday, described Badenoch remarks as misleading.
The NIDCOM boss argued that Badenoch’s claim was against Section 25(1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution, which says a person born outside Nigeria qualifies for Citizenship if either Parent is a Nigerian citizen.
She added that defaming one’s country publicly must be challenged, and while Nigeria supports its diasporans, no one can be forced to love their homeland.
Dabiri-Erewa said: “But that is not true. Don’t divulge false information.
“You go on international media and spin a lie, that is a lie, that is not even true. And I’m sure people have responded.
“It’s not true, so why tell us something that is not true?
“Do you know the number of Nigerians we have in the UK in the political space who are doing very well?
“We don’t have to focus on one person, but when you denigrate your country, we reply to you.
“It’s not about me, or the President, or you, it’s about Nigeria. You can’t lie about your country, and then we keep quiet.
“There are many who are doing very well politically. So ours is to continue to work with every Nigerian in the diaspora, but you can’t force anybody.”
Coming less than a month after two students of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba- Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State, were killed by suspected kidnappers, a female undergraduate of the Institution has allegedly been hacked to death by her boyfriend.
The latest situation forced the students of the University to take to the streets of the community on Saturday to protest against the alleged killings of their fellow students by the indigenes of the town.
This came barely three weeks after two students of the institution Andrel Okah of the Department of History and International Studies and John Abba of the Department of Economics were abducted and killed by some persons, some of whom had been been arrested by the police.
However, the mastermind killing has reportedly died in the police custody.
The protesting students alleged that the latest incident happened to one Joy Adeyemi of the Department of Human Kinetics of the institution.
She was suspected to have been murdered on Tuesday by her boyfriend who has fled the community. The alleged killer is said to be an indigene of the town .
During the protest, the angry students, who were chanting various solidarity songs, carried placards with inscriptions such as, ‘At Akungba Akoko, say no to students’ killings,’ Stop killing us, AAUA students,’ The state government should intervene in the killing of AAUA students,’ among others.
One of the protesters, who simply identified himself as Kunle, stated that the deceased had been killed by her boyfriend who since Tuesday, locked her inside his room, stating that it was neighbors that raised the alarm to call attention of the students when they perceived bad odour from the room.
He said ” We are yet to know the reason the guy killed that lady. The lady operates POS in that area, but since Tuesday, she has disappeared and nobody knew her whereabouts untill yesterday when the neighbours perceived bad odour, that they discovered she has been stabbed to death by her boyfriend.
“It is high time the state government do something about the killings of our students by the indigenes of this town. If nothing is done, this may lead to a serious crisis in this community.
“You remember that some weeks ago, two of our students were also kidnapped and killed . So something has to be done.”
In the same vein, the National Association of Nigerian Students, (NANS) Joint Campus Committee, in a statement condemned the dastardly act and called on the security agencies to bring the perpetrator to book .
The statement was signed by the chairman and secretary of the committee Comrade Adekanye
Adeboye and Oladele Emmanuel respectively.
The statement read, “The National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Council, Ondo Axis is appalled and deeply saddened by the recent wave of killings targeting students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State.
“While the student community is still grappling with the tragic loss of two students who were brutally killed in the university, another female student fell victim to this senseless violence just yesterday.
“As a body saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the general affairs and welfarism of all Nigerian students, we strongly condemn these heinous acts and demand immediate action from the Ondo State Government and all security operatives responsible for safeguarding lives and property within the state.
“The incessant killings are clear indication of a security lapse that must be addressed urgently.
” In light of these tragic events, NANS issues a 24-hour ultimatum to the Ondo State Government and all relevant security agencies to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of these crimes, implement robust security measures to prevent further attacks on students and ensure the safety and security of all students within the university and its environs.”
According to the statement, the NANS demanded accountability and serious actions to protect the lives of its members, saying failure to comply with 24-hour ultimatum “would leave us with no other option than to mobilize all students structure across the country down to Ondo state and stage a massive peaceful protest and until our demands are met.”
IT’S NOW OR NEVER: Let Nigeria get ready. Indeed, let the world get ready for, it is now or never.
The epic battle for the soul of Nigeria shall be fought in 2027. It shall be a showdown between day and night; light and darkness; good and evil. Let’s call it a sort of liberational Armageddon! Let everyone bear it in mind and determine today, on which side he shall be fighting!
In the run up to the 2023 presidential elections about three years ago, EXPRESSO had written the article: OBI AS PROMETHEUS UNBOUND (the title is of course, taken from an 1820 poetic drama by P.B. Shelley). This column had depicted Peter Obi as Prometheus, the titan in Greek mythology who outwits Zeus, the king of deities.
In the fable, PROMETHEUS steals fire from mount Olympus, the abode of Zeus. In defiance of Zeus, he gifts the fire to humans thereby revolutionising the existence of man. In anger, Zeus binds Prometheus to the precipice of a mountain, leaving him there in an eternal cycle of living and dying. (See Wikipedia).
In 2023, Prometheus was ostensibly unbound in Nigeria through the Peter Obi phenom. This column wrote a couple of articles interrogating the Prometheus syndrome and drawing parallels to Obi.
Again, in 2023, an election like in no other time in Nigeria’s history was held. The election turned out to be a turning point in the annals of Nigeria.
There was awareness like in no other time; there was voter registration like in no other time; there was voter turn-out like in no other time; there were candidates like in no other time and a landslide victory was recorded like in no other time!
But there was also an election finagling (like in no other time) in which an election umpire led by a certain Professor Yakubu Mahmoud rigged the election like in no other time and had to announce the results in the dead of night while the nation was in deep slumber… like in no other time!
INDICATOR: Imagine an election that had over 90 million registered voters with accredited voters turnout hitting about 80 million across the country.
But after the Mahmoud midnight magic, only about 27 million voters were recorded to have voted eventually.
Mr Peter Obi
Overnight, Nigeria’s highest voter turn-out in history was reduced to the least – barely 10 percent! Never in the history of Nigeria has any president won election with 10% voters turn out!
Someday, Prof. Mahmoud would have to explain how he cannibalised about 50 million Nigerians who turned out to exercise their rights on February 25, 2023.
In what may yet be recorded as the darkest day in Nigeria’s electoral epoch.
Someday, Prof. Mahmoud would explain to his God, how hundreds of millions of dollars worth of electronic voting systems comprising iREV and BVAS devices suffered a “GLITCH,” at the critical moments and would not record real-time, Presidential election figures.
But the same devices released results for legislative candidates on the same ballot paper, held same day!
Huge investments and efforts made to ensure that the 2023 election process would be more transparent and fair were sabotaged by INEC!
Alas, Nigeria, nay, the world was aghast watching Nigeria and her electoral umpire (NEC) fumble and wobble for four days over vote collation process the world had long perfected and made almost foolproof.
THE PROMETHEAN MANDATE: Two years after his mandate, freely and unanimously given to him by Nigerians was brazenly stolen, Nigeria is yet again being dragged to the hustings so early in the day for the 2027 voting rounds.
The ruling party APC, the aider and beneficiary of the 2023 election heist and INEC, the mastermind of the fraud have pretended all was well.
INEC deigns to be holding elections in states but are only perpetuating the FRAUD OF 2023! They have never fully explained the so-called “glitch” neither have they reviewed the entire election.
NO RESULTS OF THE LAST PRESIDENTIAL POLLS ON INEC’S DIGITAL MEMORY!
No discussions about the electronic voting systems INEC promised us, which we paid for, but which failed woefully.
Since 2023, INEC has been carrying out elections in the old, crude manuality that was designed for rigging. INEC has deviously jettisoned the electronic voting system!
But it seems delicately poised that the Promethean momentum remains even more poignant now than in 2023.
It appears more likely this time that there’s a Promethean mandate not only to fire up Nigeria but to light up the redemptive fire to cleanse the land once and for all times.
Obi, the outsider candidate, the X-factor clearly won the election but was brushed aside by Nigeria’s old guard led by a Bola Tinubu and an Atiku Abubakar.
Using the instruments of state (electoral body, the armed forces and the judiciary), Obi’s victory was stolen and the fire of rebirth was turned to a simmering charcoal of anger and angst.
Obi was half vilified for dropping the gauntlet of leadership. Those, including some of his ardent followers, called OBiDIENTS, taunted him and called him lilly-livered. They said he failed at the critical juncture, and missed the moment of thunder and history.
They mocked that he didn’t grasp the magnitude of the hour; that he cowered when the last lap of the race was to merely embrace the barricades and watch the revolution begin.
But Obi demurred.
He would not participate in body count in order to lead Nigeria. He wants to right the wrongs in Nigeria but not by weaponising the cadaver of Nigerian youths who would fill up the streets of Nigeria at his behest.
Unlike the remnants of the old guard (like Tinubu and Atiku), Obi is not desperate to be president; he is desperate to make Nigeria a better place for all. He says this all the time.
Despite the 2023 setback, the Obi fire has continued to seeth and simmer since the last election.
Just as he has done since he left office as two-term governor of Anambra State in 2014, he has continued to push his brand of targeted philanthropy as if his money grows on iroko trees.
No other Nigerian politician matches his charity outreach; doling out billions of Naira to support struggling educational and health institutions.
No other politician in Nigeria’s history who ran or is running a state, ever left excess funds in long-term government bonds. In fact, this column would wager that many Nigerian governors never heard of sovereign bonds, not to contemplate using it for the benefit of their people.
In fact, EXPRESSO insists that nigh all governors in Nigeria merely borrow heaps of funds, pilfer much of it and pile up debts for their people after eight years.
Obi proved the exception.
He never borrowed a dime, he owed not a dime and he trumped most of his contemporaries, carrying out holistic and integrated development of Anambra while he led it. He was nonpareil as a Nigerian governor.
TINUBU AND THE SINKING APC SHIP:
The ruling party APC, is a certified debacle. APC today reminds us of a Nigerian Titanic sailing to Port Perdition. It’s only a matter of time for it to get to its destination unless arrested and re-coursed.
We thought the late President Muhammadu Buhari was a poor leader, but Bola Tinubu has turned out far worse than Buhari, a class apart!
In fact, Tinubu today holds the record as the worst president in Nigeria’s history. You don’t even need to have a head to understand the negative indices… every Nigerian can feel it.
Tinubu is the worst because he’s the most corrupt of all.
One example will suffice: THE DANGOTE REFINERY was Tinubu’s low hanging fruit; it was to be the catalyst with which to ignite a monumental socioeconomic change.
But Tinubu chose to hijack the entirety of Nigeria’s oil for himself!
Consider this tragic paradox: Dangote Refineries (DR) has capacity to supply most of Nigeria’s (and indeed, Africa’s) petroleum products needs. But Tinubu is at loggerheads with DR. This explains why NNPC STILL IMPORTS REFINED PETROLEUM PRODUCTS while DANGOTE STILL IMPORTS CRUDE OIL.
Again, NNPC spent billions of dollars in fixing three of Nigeria’s refineries, yet not one is working.
Tinubu cannot prosecute the NNPC executives who perpetrated this demonic fraud because his hands are tied by his own quota of malfeasance in the oil industry.
IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS
The year, 2027 has to be the year of the Promethean Mandate. It can only be divine that a Peter Obi is on hand to lead it.
And it’s not ordinary that he has become the icon and face of Nigeria’s democratic ethos today.
Tinubu and his APC have come to the end of their tether. While Buhari took Nigeria to the bush, Tinubu is unheededly, taking her deep into the jungle, far beyond redemption.
In 2027, a redemptive Armageddon shall be enacted at the polls to preserve the soul of our great nation, Nigeria. ##

The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Saturday, July 26, 2025, constituted a Special Panel to carry out an unfettered inquest into the circumstances surrounding the Commissioner for Transportation, Ibrahim Namadi, signing bail bonds for a suspected notorious drug lord, Suleiman Danwanu.
The Source reports that Namadi had stood as a surety for Danwanu in a celebrated trial at a Federal High Court sitting in Kano after being granted bail by Justice M S Shuiabu on July 17, 2025.
Danwanu is being prosecuted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA over his alleged involvement in series of high profile drug related Offences.
He is widely believed to be one of the serial and notorious drug dealers in Kano.
Since signing the bail bond, the Commissioner has been on the spotlight, with not a few questioning his motives and relationship with the suspect.
Some of the critics have questioned his real motive for standing as a surety for someone whose business activities are generally considered to be utterly inimical to the health of Kano youths and image of the State, much so at a time the State Government is fighting hard to eradicate the menace of drug abuse among the youths of the State.
As at Friday, July 25, the attacks had become so intense as to draw a response from the embattled Commissioner who, expressed regret over the development.
He stated: “Accordingly, it is important to state clearly that my involvement in this matter was not based on any personal relationship or affiliation with the suspect but was done in good faith.

“I deeply regret this unfortunate incident and wish to assure the Government and good people of Kano State that I remain firmly committed to justice, accountability and rule of law.
“I will neither sabotage nor support any efforts that seeks to undermine the fight against drug abuse, thuggery, and other vices threatening the peace and stability of our dear State.”
But his seemingly contrite disposition was not enough to assuage frayed nerves as the authorities have insisted on getting to the root of the embarrassing development.
In a statement issued by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa his spokesperson on Saturday, Governor Yusuf was quoted as saying that the probe has become necessary in the face of widespread public outrage .
“To address the matter, Governor Yusuf has set up a Special Investigative Committee chaired by Barrister Aminu Hussain, his Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters.
“The Committee is mandated to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and recommend actions with immediate effect.
” Members of the Committee include Barr. Aminu Hussain, Chairman, Barr Hamza Haladu, Hamza Nuhu Dantani, Abdullahi Mahmoud Umar, Major General Sani Muhammad Rtd, Comrade Kabiru Said Dakata, and Hajia Bilkisu Maimota, Secretary .
Meanwhile , Governor Yusuf the statement further noted, has expressed serious concern over the alleged misconduct, while also reaffirming his administration’s commitment towards fighting drug abuse and other societal vices.
