Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has called for an urgent review of the curriculum of polytechnics and universities of technology to align with emerging global realities in the education sector.

Specifically, he said the way to go now is to embrace learning in artificial intelligence and digital innovation.

Governor Uzodimma made the suggestions when a delegation of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) paid him a courtesy visit at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Owerri weekend.

Uzodimma stressed that the global economy now places greater value on practical skills than academic certificates.

“The future belongs to those with the right skills. In a few years, certificates alone may no longer guarantee employment; people want to know what you can do,” he said.

The Governor urged technical institutions to reposition themselves for the Fourth Industrial Revolution by promoting digital technology, robotics and innovation-driven education.

He also challenged ASUP to advocate curriculum reforms and conduct labour-market assessments to ensure graduates remain employable.

Drawing inspiration from Rwanda’s technological transformation, Uzodimma said Nigeria possesses the human and natural resources needed to compete globally if its educational system is properly aligned with modern demands.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to technical education and staff welfare, while encouraging the visiting delegates to enjoy Imo’s hospitality and explore the state during their stay.

Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Mr. Chibuzor Asomugha who represented the National President of the Union, Dr. Shammah Kpanja, commended Governor Uzodimma for his contributions to education, infrastructure development and workers’ welfare in the state.

He further praised Uzodimma’s intervention in resolving ASUP’s dispute with the Federal Government, which he said culminated in the signing of an agreement between both parties.

Asomugha described Imo as a secure and rapidly developing State, citing improvements in road infrastructure, regular payment of salaries, implementation of the new minimum wage and employment generation.

He, however, conveyed concerns raised by staff of Imo State Polytechnic, including salary disparities, non-implementation of promotion benefits, and ongoing relocation issues, while appealing for government intervention.

Uzodimma Urges Universities Of Technology To Lead Nigeria’s Fourth Industrial Revolution

Governor Hope uzodimma at FUTO

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has challenged Nigerian universities of science and technology, particularly the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), to take the lead in preparing the country for the Fourth Industrial Revolution or risk condemning future generations to economic irrelevance.

Failure to do so, he warned,  could undermine the nation’s future economic competitiveness and technological advancement.

Delivering the 38th Convocation Lecture at FUTO on Thursday, June 4th, 2026, Uzodimma said Nigeria and Africa missed the first three industrial revolutions and could not afford to miss the current technology-driven transformation powered by artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology and digital innovation.

His lecture, entitled, “Nigerian Universities of Technology Must Lead in the Fourth Industrial Revolution or Jeopardize the Nation’s Future,” formed one of the major highlights of the institution’s 38th convocation activities.

The Governor’s postulations came at a time many countries around the world are embracing emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, automation, machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics and advanced manufacturing systems to transform their economies, and impact national development.

Uzodimma specifically tasked FUTO on innovation, entrepreneurship and national development in line with what obtains in some climes globally.

“Our country and continent missed the first, second and third industrial revolutions. We have no excuse to miss the fourth. We either sit at the table or stare on the menu. The choice is ours.”

Uzodimma stressed that “universities, particularly institutions dedicated to science and technology, must go beyond their traditional roles as centres of teaching and research to become active drivers of innovation, industrial growth and economic transformation.”,

He emphasised the importance of sustained investment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, as critical to Nigeria’s quest for industrial growth and technological self-reliance.

“The Fourth Industrial Revolution presents both opportunities and challenges for developing nations like Nigeria. While the technological wave offers unprecedented prospects for economic growth and job creation, countries that fail to prepare their workforce and institutions risk being left behind in the global knowledge economy,” he explained.

The Governor argued that Nigerian universities must position themselves at the forefront of technological development by producing graduates equipped with the skills required to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world.

Uzodimma’s lecture harped on the need to bridge the long-standing gap between academic institutions and industry.

He emphasised that university curricula must be aligned with contemporary industry realities and emerging technological trends. He noted that such alignment would enable graduates to develop practical solutions to both local and global challenges, and enhance their employability and entrepreneurial capacity.

He urged universities to strengthen partnerships with industry players, technology companies, government agencies and research institutions to foster innovation ecosystems capable of driving sustainable development.

Uzodimma also underscored the importance of encouraging research and development activities that address Nigeria’s peculiar socio-economic needs, rather than relying solely on imported technologies.

The Governor cautioned on the consequences of inaction by the universities of technology in Nigeria, saying that countries and institutions that fail to embrace the technologies shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution could face economic stagnation and increasing marginalisation in the global marketplace.

He  then invited policymakers, university administrators, lecturers and students to collectively embrace innovation and technological advancement as strategic tools for national development.

Uzodimma said “for Nigeria the stakes are particularly high given the country’s youthful population and growing demand for employment opportunities.”

Turning to FUTO again, the Governor described the school as a strategic institution with a historic mandate to drive technological advancement, noting that the university stands at a critical juncture as it transitions to a new leadership.

To all universities of technology he urged them to reform their curricula, strengthen industry partnerships, promote research with commercial value and establish innovation hubs capable of producing globally competitive entrepreneurs and technology firms.

Citing examples from South Korea, Singapore, Estonia, Rwanda and India, where universities have become engines of economic transformation through innovation and technology-driven education, Uzodimma said FUTO and her ilk could be better equipped to do the same.

He warned that failure to adapt would worsen unemployment, brain drain and economic marginalisation, especially as emerging technologies reshape global labour markets.

The Governor also pledged Imo State Government’s support for the establishment of a technology and innovation ecosystem around FUTO, including start-up incubation, research commercialisation and industry collaboration.

“FUTO has a chance to become not just a university that teaches the Fourth Industrial Revolution, but a university that helps Nigeria lead it,” he said.

Uzodimma challenged the FUTO, and other Nigerian universities to play a more strategic role in driving innovation, entrepreneurship, technological advancement, and economic development.

He stressed that higher institutions must move beyond their traditional functions of teaching and research to become catalysts for solving societal problems and creating sustainable economic opportunities.

“The future prosperity of Nigeria will depend largely on the country’s ability to harness knowledge, technology, and innovation to address critical challenges in areas such as unemployment, industrialization, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, and digital transformation.

Uzodimma reiterated that universities occupy a unique position in national development because they produce the skilled manpower and research outputs needed to power economic growth and competitiveness in the global knowledge economy.

The Governor challenged institutions of higher learning, particularly FUTO to focus on generating practical solutions through research and innovation rather than limiting their activities to academic pursuits. He further argued that research findings should be translated into commercially viable products, services, and technologies capable of improving lives and stimulating economic growth.

Uzodimma called for stronger partnerships between universities, industry players, and government agencies, noting that closer collaboration would help bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application.

He noted that many groundbreaking ideas generated in Nigerian universities often fail to reach the marketplace because of weak linkages between researchers and industry. He therefore advocated the development of robust innovation ecosystems that support technology transfer, start-up incubation, entrepreneurship, and commercialization of research outputs to close the gap.

To the FUTO graduating students, Uzodimma challenged them to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship as pathways to personal and national development. He advised them to develop problem-solving skills and adopt entrepreneurial mindset that would help them create jobs rather than depend solely on traditional employment modes.

Highlighting the impact of emerging technologies on global development, Uzodimma said universities must continuously update their curricula to equip students with relevant skills in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital technologies, data science, robotics, and other fields associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Uzodimma commended FUTO for her longstanding contributions to technological education and human capital development, describing the institution as “one of Nigeria’s foremost centres of excellence in science and technology.”

“The university has produced graduates who have distinguished themselves in various sectors of the economy and contributed significantly to national development,” he said.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education and youth empowerment, saying that Imo State under his watch would continue to promote policies and initiatives that encourage innovation, digital skills development, enterprise creation, and economic inclusion.

To the 2026 graduating students, Uzodimma congratulated them on their academic feats and urged them to uphold the values of excellence, integrity, hard work, and service to humanity.

However, he reminded them that graduation marked the beginning of a new phase of responsibility and opportunity, and urged them to deploy the knowledge and skills acquired at FUTO for the advancement of society.

He expressed confidence that the institution they attended would play a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s technological future.

In her brief remarks earlier, the out-going Vice-Chancellor of FUTO, Prof. Nnenna N. Oti,  described Governor Uzodimma as the most qualified person to deliver the institution’s 38th Convocation Lecture.

She stressed that the university deliberately reserved the lecture as the highlight of the event to honour the Governor.

“I could not have chosen, the university could not have chosen, and Council could not have chosen a more qualified and distinguished convocation lecturer,” she said.

She noted that the lecture theme aligned with Uzodimma’s vision for technological advancement and development.

The event attracted dignitaries from all walks of life – the in-coming Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ikechukwu Dozie, members of the academia and students; captains of industry, National and State Assembly  members, as well as political office holders, the clergy and religious.

Yobe State Government has constructed a new prison in the state capital, Damaturu, to decongest custodial facilities in Potiskum and Gashua, as part of measures to reform the criminal justice system.

Barrister Saleh Samanja, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, disclosed this during an interview with journalists.

He explained that the absence of a prison in the state capital previously forced authorities to detain all suspects in Potiskum, creating logistical and welfare challenges.

On corruption, Samanja revealed that the ministry would establish an Anti-Corruption Unit before the end of this month in compliance with a directive by the Northern Governors Forum.

According to him, the unit would receive complaints from the public on corruption, abuse of office in government institutions and escalate verified cases to the EFCC, ICPC, or the Public Complaints Commission for investigation and prosecution.

The commissioner also urged citizens to report cases of human rights violations directly to the newly established Directorate of Citizens’ Rights in the Ministry of Justice for prompt intervention.

He said the directorate was created to handle issues such as malpractice, breach of trust, rape, gender-based violence and unfair inheritance distribution, which are often difficult to resolve through conventional courts

Mrs Alamu faulted reports circulating in some sections of the media that her abductors demanded a ransom of N1 billion, two trucks, and the imposition of Sharia law in Oyo State as conditions for their release.

Speaking in an emotional message believed to have been recorded from the kidnappers’ camp, the abducted school administrator expressed concern over what she described as misleading reports capable of worsening their plight and complicating ongoing efforts to secure their freedom.

Alamu, who revealed that she and other victims had spent 24 days in captivity, accused some individuals and politicians of allegedly playing politics with the situation, rather than focusing on efforts to rescue them.

“Please, I have come to make some clarification. Today makes it 24 days that we have been in this place.

“Some press media outlets are complicating the issue for us by stating that the people who abducted us requested N1 billion ransom, 2 trucks and demanded Sharia law across the country.

“These claims are not true,” she said.

The vice principal’s in the message,  appealed to relevant authorities, community leaders, and members of the public to exercise caution in disseminating information concerning their captivity, stressing that inaccurate reports could jeopardise negotiations and efforts aimed at securing their release.

No fewer than 50 religious and community leaders from Magamin Diddi Village in Maradun Local Council of Zamfara state have, reportedly, been seized by suspected terrorist elements.

The elders who were said to be on a trouble-shooting mission to the operational camp of one the state’s bandit kingpins, Jammo, were however, kidnapped by their supposed host.

Apparently frustrated by incessant raids, imposition of financial burden, pillaging, killings and general destruction of their community by bandits, the elders decided to honour a peace meeting with the terrorists at their camp.

However, they were seized. Only about eleven of them were said to be out of the banditry lord’s den, as at the time of reporting.

Both the Zamfara State Government ,and Maradun Local Council authorities are not happy with the community elders for embarking on such a dangerous and unapproved expedition without clearance from relevant authorities.

Speaking on the unfortunate development ,the Maradun Council Chairman ,Bello Dosara, lamented that the elders decided to hold peace talks with the bandit leaders without securing Government’s approval.

He expressed Government’s total rejection of any form of negotiations and reconciliatory moves with banditry elements in the State.

“We are against reconciliation with bandits, and Governor Dauda Lawal never supported that l. But unknown to us, the people decided to meet the bandit leaders.

“I wonder why, how they decided to go and meet their enemy”, Dosara lamented.

According to the Local Government Chairman, the community and banditry elements have been having a running battle for sometime with the terrorists regularly blocking the road to the market.

He informed that the Council has been assisting the community with security, both for the purposes of opening up the road to the market and general protection.

Dosara stated that the banditry kingpin only released about 11 of the hostages so that they could inform the community about the fate of remaining 39 victims.

Giving an insight into what might have led to the peace meeting, a serving Councilor at the Maradun Local Government Bello Hussaini, said that it has been long Jammo, the bandit leader has been terrorizing the community, leading to persistent face off and confrontations.

He noted that during one of the recent battles with operatives of the Zamfara state Security outfit– Askarawa, the bandits lost two members and their weapons.

The bandits however,  launched a reprisal attack during the last Ramadan fasting period, killing  two Askarawa operatives, and carted away their rifles in the process.

Hussaini, who explained that the reconciliation mission of the elders was at the instance of the bandits lord, accused him of betraying his guests.

He emphasized that Jammo had extended the olive branch to the community, signifying his intention to reconcile shortly after one of his fighters was killed of recent.

According to the Councilor, after betraying the elders, the banditry kingpin is now demanding the sum of N24 million for their release.

He, therefore, appealed to all relevant authorities to come to the rescue of the people, insisting that a coordinated attack on the bandits enclave will secure peace for the community.

The Oyo State Government has stepped up its campaign against kidnapping and other violent crimes with the demolition of a building allegedly linked to a notorious kidnapping syndicate in Ibadan.

The three-bedroom bungalow, situated in the Lako Community along the Aiyegun-Anaye Road axis of the state capital, was pulled down on Monday during a joint operation involving officials of the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.

Authorities said the property was identified as a hideout used by suspects connected to the abduction of Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, the younger sister of former Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu, and her twin sons.

Mrs. John-Paul and her 12-year-old sons, Peter and Paul, were reportedly kidnapped at the Elewura area of Challenge, Ibadan, on June 3, 2026, triggering security operations that led investigators to the demolished structure.

According to the state government, the demolition sends a strong message to criminal elements and reflects its determination to dismantle facilities used for illegal activities while strengthening security across Oyo State.

Earlier, the state commissioner of police, Abimbola Olugbenga, led a team of police officers and journalists to the kidnappers’ hideout located at Araromi Quarters, Ayegun North, in Oluyole Local Government Area of the state.

The visit followed a successful intelligence-led rescue operation that secured the release of Mrs. Adelabu-John Paul and her twin sons, who were abducted in the early hours of June 3, 2026, in Ibadan.

Aside two suspects arrested by the police, identified as Semiu Ishola, 39, and Adeyemi Ayobami, 35, that allegedly facilitated the use of the hideout and supported the activities of the gang, nobody has come out to claim ownership of the building.

Crisis has hit the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano state over sharing of positions with Kwankwasiyya group  threatening to quit the party.

This followed  replacement of several candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State which were substituted by other candidates.

The group claimed that the action followed an alleged breach of a power-sharing agreement.

According to a document signed by Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, the changes were made to reflect the earlier agreement on the distribution of party positions and elective tickets between the existing NDC structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.

The document was copied to National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson, Kwankwasiyya leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman.

Under the revised list, the party approved the following for Federal Constituencies:

• Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani – Kumbotso

• Nasiru Ali Ahmed – Nassarawa

• Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id – Kano Municipal

• Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim – Doguwa/Tudun Wada

• Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar – Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa

• Ibrahim Bashir Bango – Sumaila/Takai

• Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata – Gwale.

Adjustments were also made to State House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.

The NDC explained that there was a standing agreement for elective positions and party offices to be shared on a 60-40 basis, with the Kwankwasiyya bloc receiving 60 percent and the original party structure retaining 40 percent.

Former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso had led members of the group, which he formed to decamp to the NDC from African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Suspects arrested in connection with  the abduction of Mrs. Adelabu-John Paul, younger sister of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and her twin sons, attempted to recruit an insider close to the household to join the gang, according to Oyo State Police Command.

Police investigations also revealed that the kidnappers had monitored the family’s activities for weeks before the abduction.

The gang allegedly conducted surveillance on the family’s daily movements, vehicles, lifestyle, and the schools attended by the children.

These were revealed as the Police Command paraded four suspects arrested in connection with the abduction of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, family members.

The command urged residents to remain vigilant and report fleeing members of the kidnapping syndicate.

Earlier, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abimbola Olugbenga, led a team of police officers and journalists to the kidnappers’ hideout located at Araromi Quarters, Ayegun North, in Oluyole Local Government Area of the state.

The visit followed a successful intelligence-led rescue operation that secured the release of Mrs. Adelabu-John Paul and her twin sons, who were abducted in the early hours of June 3, 2026, in Ibadan.

During the inspection of the hideout and subsequent press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Eleyele, the Commissioner of Police disclosed that investigations and security operations linked to the incident were still ongoing, assuring residents that every member of the criminal syndicate would be tracked down and brought to justice.

Olugbenga said the operation was carried out through a coordinated effort involving operatives of the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT), the Oyo State Police Command, and other tactical units of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, the victims were abducted at about 7:30 a.m. on June 3 while the mother was taking her children to school along Elewura Street, off Ring Road, Ibadan.

Following the report of the incident, the police commissioner said the Command immediately launched an intelligence-driven manhunt on the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, leading to the deployment of specialised tactical and intelligence teams.

The operation led to the arrest of Wale Abolalewa, popularly known as “Oloro,” who was already on the Command’s watchlist.

His arrest, according to the police, provided a major breakthrough that exposed the wider kidnapping network.

Further investigations resulted in the arrest of Dare Oyedele, alias “Solution,” identified as another key member of the gang.

The commissioner disclosed that intelligence gathered from the suspects and digital evidence eventually led operatives to the gang’s hideout at Araromi Quarters, Ayegun North.

The police boss stated that following the operation, the victims were rescued unhurt and safely reunited with their family.

He further announced the arrest of two additional suspects identified as Semiu Ishola, 39, and Adeyemi Ayobami, 35, who allegedly facilitated the use of the hideout and supported the activities of the gang.

Items recovered from the suspects included three pump-action rifles, 14 live cartridges, an unregistered ash-coloured Toyota Corolla allegedly used during the abduction, criminal charms, a battle axe, a hammer, substances suspected to be hard drugs, and two face masks.
