$11.6b Debt Servicing: Obi Critiques Tinubu’s Borrowing as a Long-Term Burden on Nigeria

0
Peter Obi and Bola Tinubu

Peter Obi, a leading presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, has expressed strong criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his borrowing practices, which he believes are not being used for production or development purposes. Obi’s remarks come in response to the President’s announcement that Nigeria will allocate approximately $11.6 billion for debt servicing. He argues that this trend under Tinubu is evolving from a temporary fiscal responsibility into a long-lasting structural burden that hampers development and increases economic vulnerability.

In a post on his X platform, Obi pointed out, “During a recent foreign visit, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu revealed that Nigeria would spend around $11.6 billion on debt servicing—a figure that should alarm anyone invested in the nation’s economic future and long-term growth.”

Obi emphasised that borrowing is not inherently negative if managed wisely and directed toward productive investments. He cited examples of countries like Japan, the UK, the US, the UAE, Singapore, and Indonesia, which, despite being heavily indebted, allocate their borrowed funds toward education, healthcare, infrastructure, and innovation—areas that yield long-term economic benefits and enhance repayment capabilities. Consequently, these countries manage their debt levels more effectively, as the obligations are connected to tangible productivity.

In contrast, Nigeria’s borrowing history has largely been geared toward consumption, with few sustainable developmental results that would validate the existing levels of debt.

It is also crucial to note that a significant portion of the debt currently being serviced was accrued during the Tinubu administration itself, which continues to engage in substantial borrowing. The administration’s recent external borrowing includes roughly $6 billion—$5 billion from First Abu Dhabi Bank in the UAE and $1 billion from UK Export Finance via Citibank London—along with an additional $1.25 billion being considered from the World Bank and $516 million arranged through Deutsche Bank. This raises the total known external loan commitments to about $7.8 billion. Additionally, domestic borrowing through monthly bond issuances continues to increase the overall debt.

In light of this, Nigeria’s 2026 budget allocates ₦2.46 trillion for health, ₦2.56 trillion for education, and ₦865 billion for poverty alleviation, totalling approximately ₦5.885 trillion for these essential sectors. In comparison, debt servicing—estimated at $11.6 billion (roughly ₦17–₦18 trillion based on exchange rate assumptions)—is nearly three times greater than the combined allocations for health, education, and social protection. This discrepancy underscores a concerning fiscal reality where debt obligations increasingly limit funding for human capital development and poverty alleviation.

Furthermore, even within the limited funding for these sectors, full release of the funds is not guaranteed, and a substantial portion may be subject to misallocation.

The primary concern, ultimately, lies not in the act of borrowing itself, but in whether the borrowed funds are being transformed into measurable productivity, inclusive growth, and enhanced living standards. Without such a conversion, debt servicing shifts from being a temporary fiscal obligation to a long-term structural burden that stifles development and exacerbates economic vulnerability.

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has confirmed casualties in the fresh coordinated airstrike operations carried out by the Nigerian military with support from the United States Military in Borno State. The number of casualties was putting at 20.

According to the defence record, more than 20 suspected ISIS/ISWAP fighters  were eliminated in the operation as confirmed on Monday by the Defence Headquarters.

It revealed that the onslaught targeted terrorist hideouts in the Metele area of northern Borno, a known flashpoint that has repeatedly come under insurgent attacks.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba,  revealed that the strikes were based on credible intelligence indicating the movement and convergence of terrorist elements in the area.

According to the statement, multiple airstrikes were executed on identified positions, leading to the elimination of over 20 fighters linked to ISIS/ISWAP.

The Defence Headquarters explained that the latest offensive is part of sustained counterterrorism operations in the North-East, aimed at dismantling insurgent networks and denying them safe havens.

It noted that the operation followed recent reports of the neutralisation of a senior ISIS commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, as part of ongoing efforts to weaken terrorist structures in the region.

“The ongoing operations follow the neutralisation of ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki and are part of sustained efforts to disrupt terrorist networks, remove them from the battlefield and deny the terrorists any safe haven within Nigeria,” the statement read.

The military further reaffirmed its commitment to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity, stressing that insurgents will continue to face decisive action.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to aggressively defend the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the nation.

“Terrorists who threaten our citizens, communities and national stability will be located and defeated. There will be no safe haven for terrorists anywhere in Nigeria,” it added

“The Situation In APC Surulere Is Troubling” – Desmond Elliott

By Akinwale Kasali

Less than 48 hours to the All Progressives Congress, APC, Primary for State House of Assembly, Hon. Desmond Olusola Elliott, representing Surulere 1 Constituency has alleged plot by some leaders of the Party in Surulere of intimidation, political victimisation and attempts to manipulate the party’s forthcoming primaries.

In a viral video circulated on Sunday, the lawmaker alleged that party members were being coerced and threatened to support a preferred aspirant ahead of the APC primaries scheduled for May 20, 2026.

The Filmmaker turn politician alleged that some Local Government officials had allegedly been removed from their positions because of their support for him, describing the situation within the Surulere APC as unfair and troubling.

“Intimidation, coercion, twisting and forcing people to follow their own candidate is what is existing today in Surulere.

“Telling them that they will not be beneficiaries of some empowerment that is coming some other time. Please, this is not done and should not be done.”

He further alleged that the Local Government leadership openly backed another aspirant long before the primaries, adding that he initially chose to remain silent despite the alleged bias.

“It is bad enough that the LGA and the local government already took a side months ago. The local government already took a side to support a particular aspirant,” he stated.

According to him, the level of support he enjoys within the constituency may have unsettled his political opponents.

“They were shocked to have seen the quantum number of people and supporters that we’ve had and who have followed us because they believe in justice and fair play,” he said.

Elliott also alleged that his Security Personnel were withdrawn under unclear circumstances.

“My security personnel was taken away from me yesterday for reasons best known to them. Now I am left alone to myself. What have I done?” he queried.

The lawmaker further raised concerns over possible violence during the primaries, alleging that plans were underway to mobilise people to disrupt the process.

“They are coming out to fight us. They want to bring people from outside and from within to cause mayhem and trouble,” he alleged.

He appealed to party leaders to intervene and ensure that the exercise is peaceful, transparent and credible.

“I want to ask our party chieftains, please investigate this matter,” Elliott said.

Despite his complaints, the Surulere lawmaker said he would accept the outcome of the primaries if the process is free and fair.

“By the grace of God, if I, Desmond Olusola Elliott, win, Alhamdulillah. If I lose, I will throw my support behind the winner. But please let it be under a free and fair election,” he added.

He also urged his supporters not to be intimidated, assuring them that adequate security would be provided during the exercise.

Elliott further used the video to campaign for other APC Candidates, including Wasiu Eshilokun, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat and Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

There has been crisis in Surulere 1, as allegations are rife that the Chief of Staff, CoS, to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila has a Candidate he is sponsoring against Elliott.

Recall that last week, Gbajabiamila disclosed that he almost lost his job, following the role Elliott played in the planned removal of Mudashiru Obasa as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, despite him warning Elliott to back out.

Following this development, Elliott had come out to apologize to him, saying that he was only a Kid, seeking forgiveness from him.

Though Elliott’s apology was termed as late and dead on arrival, as his Fourth Term Bid in LAHA could be marred, with insinuations rife that there is a lady that is tipped to replace Elliott.

No doubt, the allegations by Elliott is expected to further deepen concerns over internal divisions within the APC in Surulere amid growing claims of candidate imposition and factional rivalry ahead of the party primaries.

The Department of State Services, DSS, had, on April 23, 2026, arraigned El-Rufai on a three count charge bordering on alleged wire-tapping of the telephone lines of the National Security Adviser NSA .

Presiding Judge Honourable Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik on Monday, May 18, 2026  granted the Kaduna State former Governor bail to the tune of N100 million, with one surety in like sum.

Justice Abdul-Malik also ruled that the surety must be a resident of either Maitama or Asokoro District of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, with a landed property which certificate of occupancy must be deposited with the court.

The surety who must be a Federal civil servant  not below the Grade Level 17, must attach proofs of current salaries in the last three months.

Ekiti Gov. Election: Accord Deputy. Gov. Candidate Withdraws, Backs PDP Flag bearer

By Ayodele Oni

Almost a month to the governorship election in Ekiti state, the deputy governorship candidate of Accord Party, Bayode Omoyele has withdrawn his candidature.

He has decided to pitch tent with the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), Wole Oluyede.

In a statement on Monday,Omoyele cited lack of structure for Accord Party to win the June 20 election.

“Today, I stand before you not with anger, but with clarity. Not with bitterness, but with sacrifice. I am here to formally announce my withdrawal from the nomination as Deputy Governorship Candidate of Accord Party for the June 20th, 2026 election.

“This decision was not made in a moment. It came after deep reflection, wide consultations, and a hard look at where we stand as a party in Ekiti State today.

“I accepted this nomination because I believed we could build a credible alternative for Ekiti. I believed we could run a campaign rooted in merit, discipline, and service.

“But politics without structure is noise. A campaign without organization is a journey to nowhere. After a careful evaluation of the entire party structure across the 16 LGAs, it became clear to me that we are not organized, mobilized, or ready to contest and win this election.

“I will not lend my name, my reputation, and the trust of the people of Ikere, Ekiti South Senatorial District, and Ekiti State to a process that lacks the discipline to succeed. To continue would be to deceive you, and I refuse to do that.

“Let me be clear: this withdrawal is a sacrifice. A sacrifice for Ikere, for Ekiti South Senatorial District, and for Ekiti State as a whole.

“My people of Ikere have always stood for progress and for courage. I cannot lead them into a race we are not prepared to finish.

“I cannot ask Ekiti South to waste its votes on a structure that is not ready. And I cannot watch Ekiti State repeat the cycle of failed promises because we refused to be honest with ourselves.

“Real leadership sometimes means stepping aside so that something better can move forward. That is what I am doing today.

“Time is the most valuable resource we have. It is too precious to waste on a journey to no destination. Ekiti cannot afford another four years of trial and error.

“The people are tired. The youths are leaving. The economy is stagnant. We need a candidate who is ready, capable, and has a clear plan to rescue this state.

“After careful consideration, I believe that candidate is Dr. Oluwole Oluyede.

“Dr. Oluyede has the pedigree, the experience, and the capacity to lead Ekiti out of its current state. He understands governance, he understands development, and he has the network and discipline to organize Ekiti for victory and for service.

“I am therefore throwing my weight behind Dr. Oluwole Oluyede and urging all my supporters in Ikere, Ekiti South, and across Ekiti State to align with him.”

Tanimu-Turaki

The Tanimu Turaki faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is set to screen over 3000 aspirants seeking the party’s ticket for the 2027 elections in the country. No fewer than 3,181 aspirants will be screen soon, according to the faction which is currently in a ruing battle with the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led faction of the party.

The party has been embattled for sometimes, as two factions are laying claim to its leadership, and the case in court for settlement. The development, analysts insist, seriously endangers the aspirations of politicians seeking to contest under the party next year, as they are unsure, which of the faction will win the leadership tussle case in the courts.

Many aspirants are currently in dilemma over the leadership tussle, those closely watching the party said.

According  a post shared by the Turaki faction on its social media handles on Sunday, the PDP faction said aspirants who have obtained forms to contest various positions under the party’s banner, including those seeking to be President, governors, National Assembly, State House of Assembly members, will be screen soon.

Atiku Describes Tinubu’s Fresh $1.25 World Bank Loan As ‘Reckless’

Atiku Abubakar
Atiku: Mega coalition arrowhead

Top opposition leader in the country, Atiku Abubakar has expressed dissatisfaction with the federal government plan to borrow fresh loan from the World Bank, describing the action as “reckless” and “ dangerously habitual” for the administration which he said has made borrowing a habit.

The former Nigerian Vice President and ADC presidential aspirant made the remark in a statement on Sunday amid the ongoing discussion by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to borrow $1. 25 billion from the Bretton Wood, United States-based financial institution.

The statement issued by Abubakar’s media aide, Olusola Sanni claimed that the new loan, if approved by the World Bank, will be the largest single borrowing  by the administration, saying it’s unfortunate that the government which promised prosperity for Nigerians has now embarked on a loan binge, which he said there’s nothing on the ground to show for.

“Nigerians were told these loans were for infrastructure, power, and economic recovery. Yet the average citizen still lives in darkness, roads remain death traps, businesses are collapsing under crushing energy costs, and hunger has become a national epidemic,” Abubakar said.

Abubakar urged the World Bank and other creditors to ensure that the Nigerian government follow due process, by strictly following the “terms and conditions” tied to the loans, adding that Nigeria has become one of the biggest debtors to world Bank , despite claim by the Tinubu’s administration that revenue has improved.

“At this point it has become necessary to demand that the World Bank and, indeed, other creditors apply more prudent measures in ensuring significant compliance to the terms and conditions of these loans,” he stated.

“The IDA loans are facilities granted to extremely poor countries and currently shares the same spot with Bangladesh and Pakistan as top countries in world with highest loan exposure to the World Bank. This data is diametrically opposed to claims by the Tinubu administration that the government had increased its revenue generation drive.

“It is deeply ironic that the same nation which painstakingly exited the Paris Club debt trap through the fiscal discipline, diplomatic credibility, and reform-driven leadership of the Obasanjo-Atiku administration in 2005–2006 is now being dragged back into a fresh era of debt dependency.

“Between May 2023 and now, the Tinubu administration has obtained record massive loans from the World Bank under the titles of objectives that are difficult to verify its implementation.

“The historic debt relief of 2006 was not accidental. It was earned through tough negotiations, prudent management, and international goodwill. Today, that legacy is being squandered with alarming irresponsibility.

“This administration appears to believe that borrowing is governance. It is not. Loans are not achievements. Debt is not development. And mortgaging the future of unborn Nigerians to fund present incompetence is not economic management—it is economic vandalism.

“We must begin to ask difficult questions, not just of the borrowers, but also of the lenders….

“No responsible lender should ignore the warning signs. A government that keeps borrowing while citizens see no tangible improvement in electricity supply, healthcare, education, or infrastructure raises legitimate concerns about fiscal credibility and governance discipline.

“Nigeria cannot continue down this dangerous path where every economic challenge is answered with another loan request. At some point, creditors must ask themselves whether they are funding development or enabling dysfunction.

“The Tinubu administration must understand that a nation cannot borrow its way out of incompetence. Governance requires vision, discipline, productivity, and trust—not endless promissory notes signed against the future of a suffering people.”

Meanwhile, checks from the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, NBS indicate that the country’s current total debt stands at $111 billion.

Rivers: Surprise As APC Screening Panel Stops Wike’s Former Deputy From Senatorial Primaries

By Adesina Soyooye

Shock has greeted the disqualification of Senator Ipalibo Banigo by the All Progressive Congress Senatorial Screening Committee from participating in the Senatorial Primaries.

Senator Banigo, a Medical Doctor-turned politician was for two-terms, Rivers State Deputy Governor under then Governor Nyesom Wike. The two were thought to have had a very tidy relationship while at the Government House, Rivers, which explains why she was sponsored by Wike to go to the Senate.

Both are still thought to have a good relationship for which a number of people say explain her decamping to the APC from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

But not a few people think that his defection to the APC may have cost him the ticket. The speculation is that Wike, who is the leader of a faction of the PDP, aside from the Presidency and the Governorship, would want the PDP to occupy all the other elective offices in the State.

Since 2023, Wike had made it clear that his support and loyalty lie with President Bola Tinubu.

In the upcoming Governorship election, one of his most loyal political allies and confidante, Honourable Kingsley Chinda, has been cleared to take part in the  APC Governorship Primaries after he quietly defected from the PDP. With Wike’s support, it will be difficult to defeat Chinda either in the Party Primaries, or the General Elections in January.

Senator Banigo was elected to the Senate in 2023 immediately after serving as Wike’s Deputy Governor from 2015 to 2023.

Presently, he is representing Rivers West Senatorial District. With her disqualification, she is billed to be a one-term Senator. No reason has been given for her disqualification.
