Operation Clean Up Seme

0

By Stephen Ubanna

More  facts have emerged why Mohammed Aliyu, Comptroller Seme Command embarked on the fencing of the expansive  land owned by the Command which land speculators over the  years had sold to unsuspecting victims and another part taken over by the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, for use as their own park.

one of the reason for fencing the land is to give it a facelift as an international route. Another reason was to keep the environment  clean as it ought to be clean to attract foreign investors coming into the country for the first time through  the land border station.

A Deputy Comptroller, from the Command, who   spoke to the Magazine on  condition  of anonymity disclosed that  the initiative  to secure the Customs land  because  the whole area looked untidy  like the old Oshodi   which was very rowdy  abnd a hide out for Criminals.

Given an insider information, the  officer said the Comptroller had given the occupants three months to quit the land  after a series of meetings with the Community leaders. He disclosed that the illegal occupants knew they had no case as they voluntarily removed their make shift houses without waiting for the Command to bring bulldozers to pull down the illegal structures erected on the Customs land as they  may have been told that the 1976 Land Use Decree gave the entire land to the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS.

Seme Land Border Station
Seme Land Border Station

The Customs land was said to have started  from the boundary between Nigeria and Republic of Benin, precisely at the area where the sign board ,” Welcome to Nigeria was placed”.   The voluntary removal of the illegal structures by the owners may have disappointed the Lawyers who were waiting in the wings to drag Customs Authorities to Court for forceful ejection of their clients from their land for their own use without compensation.

The Customs Authorities may have been encouraged to hasten work on the fencing of the land to catch up with the European Economic Commission, EEC and Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, international office Complex  project at the border town.

A visitor to Seme in the recent time would be surprised at the level of that had executed  by the contractor handling the project  as the fencing had gone far, almost linking up with the Customs Scanner Site at the Border Community.

Aliyu, the Comptroller was said to have visited the site on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, for the first, since the Contractors mobilized on site, accompanied by a retinue of  officers, armed to the teeth to access the level of work done in order to report back to the Customs Headquarters at Abuja.

There was  the initial  rumours that the reclaimed Customs Land , now being fenced would be used as a truck park by the Command to receive Containerized transit cargoes that would be trans-loaded into trucks that would go through the scanning and clearing process  at the  Command.

the treatment may have gained ground because of the treatment meted  to Nigeria Customs officers  and other agencies personnel including importers with their Clearing agents by the Banana Customs Authorities, who take advantage that the land is their own to do as they  like.

It was learnt that there are some fees which they collect from Nigeria importers  for trans-loading their Containerized cargoes  into trucks in the land  under the close watch of Nigeria Customs personnel but there is not much they can do.

Another officer, who spoke to the Magazine  explained that only Hameed  Ali, a retired Colonel and Comptroller General, NCS, would determine what the reclaimed land would be used for after the fencing and no one else.

Efforts to speak to Aliyu, the Seme Comptroller including visits proved abortive as he was said to have  barred dealing with  Agents   and Community leaders who call at his office at will than Journalists.  The reason for hobnobbing with Agents and Community leaders may not be far- fetched : to give them a sense of belonging.

Indeed, the Cordial working relationship between the Command , Agents and Community leaders may have provided a sane working environment for the officers . Many of the Community leaders were said to have turned to Customs informants leading to spectacular  seizures that had been made by the Command in the recent time.

It is not surprising why the Comptroller could boldly say  that ”sanitizing  of  the Lagos-Abidjan  Corridor  and facilitating trade in line with the Federal government executive order to ease the  process of doing business  and in line with  international best practice remains  his major focus.

He has stated that effective Interpol  collaboration  with the NCS and other Customs Administrations  in the sub-region  led to the arrest  and detention of over 50 exotic vehicles by the Command in 2017 alone.

Taupyen  Selchang, a Chief Public Relations officer and the Command spokes man  disclosed that the Command made a total of 270 seizures between January  and March, 2018. He placed the Duty Paid Valued, DPV, of the seized items at about N234 million.

The good news about the Command  was the overhaul of  the smuggling  of petrol  across the border thhrough the Owode outstation, thus correcting  the  ills of smuggling the product to Republic Benin  through the land border and the Creeks.

Selchang disclosed that the Command is always  gathering classified information on the berthing of some Consignments in Cotonou port, Republic of Benin, and other ports in the West African sub-region, that are prohibited, going by the government fiscal policy measures  but the importers were targeting Nigeria market as their final destination. This is in addition to about N1.58 billion collected as revenue  which was paid into the Federation Account  within the period.

FOU: Muhammed Still In Pain Over Missing Officer

0

By Stephen Ubanna

Muhammed Uba Garba, Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone A, is in deep pain. This is because he is yet to get a clue of the hiding place of Rasheed Abdusalam, a driver attached to the Command Lagos Roving team who was abducted by smugglers penultimate week while  on operation at Sango Otta, Ogun state.

Using his experience as an anti-smuggling officer before rising to the enviable rank of a Comptroller, he was said to have used all his contacts including utilizing the services of military and police  personnel in Lagos and Ogun states to search for the abducted Customs driver but no luck. Sources told  the Magazine that he had played hosts different times with to some military officers to rob minds on how fish out the den where the officer was detained by the smugglers.

The smugglers, a sorce informed the Magazine may  not have been concerned to use the abducted officer as a bait for the release of their  seized vehicles or rice by the Customs Authorities as they were said not to have contacted the Command on what their demand could be to facilitate the release of the officer, fueling speculation that they may have an ulterior motive to dampen the enthusiasm of Muhammed and his officers in the fight against  smugglers.

Muhammed Uba Garba: Comptroller FOU, Zone A in Pains Over Abducted Officer

They may have gotten it wrong as the action of the smugglers to abduct  the Customs driver including the recent  impersonation of  the FOU, Zone A, Customs Comptroller in a Face book  account  by fifth Columnists within and outside the service may have failed. The two incidents happening at the same time may have been perpetuated by the daredevils ostensibly to  put Muhammed in the bad book of Hameed Ali, a retired Colonel and Comptroller General, Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, as one who is not in effective control of his Command but pays attentions to inconsequential issues not related to the demands of his office.

The abductors of the FOU, Zone A, driver , in particular, may have  had at the back of their mind that their action would turn the table against the Customs nation-wide.

Joseph Attah, a Deputy Comptroller of Customs and National Public Relations officer, NCS, has assured the family of Abdulsalam , the abducted officer that there was no cause for alam. He was said to have told those that care to listen that plans on round  to rescue the abducted officer. This is because of the matching order that had been given to the FOU, Zone , Management to find him.  Describing Sango Otta axis  of Ogun state as a” den of smugglers”, analysts have advised  Customs teams on operations in the area to thread with caution for fear of losing any officer to smugglers who are always battle ready to face the Customs.

The Sango Otta axis  may  have earned the title due to the relocation of  most of the  dare devil smugglers previously operating  from Seme axis to the area as a result of the tough anti-smuggling measures put in place by Mohammed Aliyu, the Comptroller of Seme Command. The Sango Otta  axis, according to a retired Customs officer who at one time or the other had led patrol teams  at Seme, Ogun and FOU, Zone are very sophisticated in their operations and could do anything to get back at Customs who they see as their greatest foe.

Given an insider account  to the circumstances that led to the abduction of the officer,  he disclosed  that it was a fallout of FOU, Zone A, officers operation in the area.  He confirmed that the operation was based  upon intelligence report on smugglers activities in the area.

The Command , Lagos Roving team led by Jack Okpabi, a Chief Superintendent of Customs, described as very” fearless  and rugged officer”, who had  had led may successful  anti-smuggling operations  resulting in the seizure of trucks load of rice and exotic vehicles , he said had left with his team to the scene of the smugglers operation at Sango Otta at about 9:10 pm.

Contrary to Abdulsam’s family claim that the team were ill-equipped for the operation,  the Customs National PRO,  said  the team were accompanied  by soldiers  in an branded bus and a branded Toyota Hilux van that was driven by the kidnapped officer.

Atta averred  that the smugglers  may have had  their way  because they laid an ambush  against the FOU, Zone A,  just after  the South African  retail,Shop Rite located at the busy Lagos- Sango Otta Express way.

. Impounded truck load of Rice By The Lagos Roving Team

An Okada rider plying the Sango- Otta, axis , told The Source that the smugglers , turned kidnappers escaped with ease because Jack’s men could not release their bullet  for fear that it might ignite fire because there was a nearby filling state close to the retail shop and a tanker was said to be discharging fuel at that that time.

The Okada rider praised the Customs team for exercising restraint in handling the situation, noting that  if the leader had given his trigger boys order to shoot at the smugglers, stray bullet would have hit at fleeing  innocent people.  He  said the abducted officer may have played into the hand of the smugglers as he tried to save the  driver of the bus  with the team who was in great danger of being killed by the  smugglers as the officers armed to the teeth had disembarked to pursue other smugglers  within the town.

He noted that if the officer that led the operation had known in advance that one of his men was missing, Sango Otta and its environs would have being This is con on fire, confirming what Attah, the Customs PRO said that the team members only got to know that one of their Colleagues was missing after the dusts had settled as he could not be accounted for.

The auto -bike rider fears that there might be element of sabotage  as the number of smugglers that showed up to challenge Customs team within  short a time was unimagined.  Indeed, Attah’s revelation of the Customs plans to rescue the abducted officer may have led to rest Abdulsam’s family accusation of  Customs Complacency in the abduction of their son.

IG Idris Shuns Senate

By Akinwale Kasali

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotum Idris, has failed to honour the senate, who mandated him to appear over the security lapses, incessant killings and the arrest and humiliation of Senator Dino Melaye.

Idris was summoned by the senate to appear before the chamber during plenary today, rather, the IG, opted to follow President Muhammadu Buhari to Bauchi State for a State visit.

The senate has however faulted Idris for failing to communicate with the senate of his decision to accompany the president.

It was unilaterally agreed by the lawmakers that Idris appearance before the senate at the hallowed chamber should be rescheduled for next Wednesday.

The Big Brother Naija show season 5 has come and gone, but its memories still lingers in the minds of millions of Nigerians.

Big Brother Naija finalist and the controversial drama queen of the house, Cynthia Nwadiora, popularly known as Cee-C, has said that she would be going to see a counsellor immediately after her media tour.

Cee-C disclosed this during a question-and-answer session between finalists and their fans organised by Payporte.

During the session, the beautiful ex-housemate acknowledged that she needed help for anger management and that she was willing to take classes for it.

She replied a fan, saying, “Yeah, I need  anger management classes.”

UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid Edge Closer To Third Consecutive Final

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Real Madrid moved a step closer to a third straight Champions League title after substitute Marco Asensio hit the winner in a 2-1 semi-final, first-leg victory at Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old came off the bench to finish a counter-attack and complete the holders’ comeback win, giving Real the advantage for the return game in Madrid next Tuesday.

Bayern took the lead at the sold-out Allianz Arena through Joshua Kimmich, but Marcelo equalised just before the break.

Despite Bayern dominating possession and creating plenty of chances, Madrid claimed a sixth straight win, dating back to 2012, over the Bavarians in the Champions League knockout stage.

Real coach Zinedine Zidane pulled a surprise before kick-off by leaving both Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema out of the starting line-up.

Isco, who was replaced by Asensio at half-time, and Lucas Vazquez played either side of Cristiano Ronaldo, who had a subdued night up front in Munich.

The Portuguese failed to add to his tally of 15 Champions League goals this season, being denied a second-half strike by an offside flag, which would have made it 3-1.

James Rodriguez, who is on a two-year loan deal from Real, shone in Bayern’s midfield and found plenty of cracks in the Madrid defence.

However, this just was not Bayern’s night.

Both Thomas Mueller and Robert Lewandowski went agonisingly close with a string of chances.

The hosts suffered a blow with barely five minutes gone when Arjen Robben limped off to be replaced by Thiago Alcantara.

Asensio: Showing off his name on his jersey after scoring the winning goal for Real Madrid

Bayern changed their system with right-back Joshua Kimmich moving up to plug the space on the right wing, which sparked the opening goal.

When Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich played the ball down the right flank, James released Kimmich with a perfectly-timed pass in the 28th minute.

The Germany international raced clear and caught out Keylor Navas at his near post to stun Real.

Bayern suffered their second early injury blow when Jerome Boateng was replaced by Niklas Suele on 34 minutes — which is also bad news for Germany with the World Cup looming.

Real had a left-off when Ribery went one-on-one with Navas, but stumbled at the crucial moment.

Then from nothing, Marcelo conjured the equaliser on 44 minutes.

When Dani Carvajal headed the ball across the edge of the box, it landed at Marcelo’s feet and was in Bayern’s net milliseconds later after a fierce left-footed shot.

It was the Brazilian’s third Champions League goal this season after also scoring in the knock-out rounds against Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

Real escaped again when Navas failed to hold a Lewandowski header just before the half-time whistle and the ball bobbled away to safety.

It shows how far Bale and Benzema have dropped out of Zidane’s favour that Isco was replaced on the left wing by Asensio for the second half, but the move paid off.

Rafinha lost the ball in midfield after a Bayern attack, and Vazquez sprinted clear and put Asensio into space to curl past Ulreich on 57 minutes.

With 25 minutes left, Zidane threw on an extra attacker, as Benzema came on for injured right-back Carvajal.

Moments later Bayern came within inches of an equaliser when Navas denied Mueller with a reflex save.

In the final five minutes, Lewandowski beat Navas, but his floated shot flew just wide of the post to add to Bayern’s misery.

Real have measure of Bayern

Real Madrid have had the wood on Bayern in recent seasons and the Germans now need an unlikely comeback at the Santiago Bernabeu next week to turn the form book around.

The humiliation of a 4-0 second-leg thrashing at the last-four stage four years ago was the lowest point of Pep Guardiola’s spell in charge at Bayern, while Cristiano Ronaldo scored five over two legs as Real won a thrilling quarter-final last season in extra time. Like 12 months ago, Bayern created plenty of chances against the Real defence, but were made to pay for errors at the back.

Changing of the Real guard

It was a rare quiet night for Ronaldo as he failed to score for the first time in 12 Champions League outings, but the absence of Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale from the starting XI called their futures into question.

When Zinedine Zidane reshuffled at half-time, it wasn’t one of the two missing members of ‘BBC’ that he turned to, but Asensio. The youngster scored the crucial winning goal, while Lucas Vazquez provided the assist and excelled on the wing before holding off the dangerous Franck Ribery when switched to right-back after Dani Carvajal’s injury.

Maverick Marcelo

Marcelo was all over the place defensively at times and was partly at fault for Bayern’s opener, but he has now scored more goals than any other defender in the Champions League knockout stage.

Marcelo: Scored a stunner against Bayern Munchen for the equalizing goal

His seventh goal in the latter stages was a magnificent strike, adding to his goals against Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus earlier in the campaign. For all the gaps he leaves behind on his raids forwards, the Brazilian more than makes up for it by being one of Real’s most consistent attacking threats.

Bayern need fresh blood

Bayern have not bolstered their squad as much as their fellow European giants in recent years and it showed on Wednesday. Ribery, 35, was their best player on the night, but his fellow 2013 Champions League winners Jerome Boateng and Arjen Robben both hobbled off in the first half.

The German champions have barely been tested in romping to seven straight Bundesliga titles, but have repeatedly been shown their shortcomings in Europe.

A 3-0 loss to PSG in the group stage saw veteran coach Jupp Heynckes return in place of Carlo Ancelotti in October, but on Wednesday’s evidence, Bayern also need fresh blood on the pitch when Niko Kovac takes over as coach at the end of the season.

Semi-final sloppiness

After Liverpool’s 5-2 victory over Roma on Tuesday saw some horrific defending from the Italians, both Real and Bayern were sloppy at the back and in possession during the second semi-final.

Casemiro and Marcelo were caught out of position for Joshua Kimmich’s goal, but goalkeeper Keylor Navas made a terrible error in gambling on the right-back crossing the ball. The two sides were generous in defence at times, with Bayern giving up their hopes of victory on the night with an atrocious pass by Rafinha.

If the final is anything like the two last-four first legs this week, fans can expect a host of goals in Kiev on May 26.

Chamberlain World Cup Hope Dashed

When Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and his Liverpool FC colleagues filed out from the tunnel to the pitch to trade tackles with AS Roma Football Club for a place in the final of the prestigious club competition in the world, the UEFA Champions League. He never had the premonition that this will be his last action for the season, and would also miss the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The England midfielder Chamberlain will miss the World Cup after he suffered a knee ligament injury in Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final clash with Roma, the club said on Wednesday.

Chamberlain raised on to challenge Aleksander Kolarov, with the aim of dispossessing of the ball, accidentally, he hurt himself as he cleared the ball out of the field of play, but he collided with the Serbian captian.

Chamberlain: Being attended to by doctors after sustaining the injury.

“The extent of the injury means Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to miss the remainder of the campaign for Liverpool, as well as the World Cup finals in Russia with England,” the club said in a statement on their website.

Details soon…

Joshua Offered $50 Million To Fight Wilder

0

Deontay Wilder told Anthony Joshua “the money’s in the bag” as prospects rose Wednesday of a blockbuster world title unification bout between the unbeaten heavyweights.
In a Twitter video posted Wednesday, America’s World Boxing Council world champion Wilder backed up reports that his camp had emailed Britain’s Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn an offer of a minimum of $50 million.

“I’ve got something special for you,” Wilder tells Joshua in the video. “By the way, all the money is in the bag. I expect you’ll be a man of your word.”

Joshua, who unified the World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Organization heavyweight titles by out-pointing New Zealand’s Joseph Parker on March 31, had already been recorded saying he’d “take $50 million up front” to fight Wilder.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Wilder promoter Lou DiBella had confirmed the offer for a fight in the United States sometime between September and December.

“We’ll see how badly he wants the fight,” DiBella told the newspaper. “Anthony Joshua has said he’d accept this offer. If Eddie Hearn is not looking to stop it from happening, they now have an extraordinary offer to consider.”

ESPN reported that both camps had confirmed the offer, adding that it was for one fight, with no rematch clause, and would have to be the next bout for each fighter.
The winner of a Joshua-Wilder bout would be the first man to hold all four major heavyweight titles simultaneously, and Joshua told the BBC this month that he’d rather face Wilder than Russian Alexander Povetkin, the WBA mandatory challenger.

Joshua, 28, won his first world title in 2016 and has made five defenses, taking his record to 21-0 with 20 knockouts.

Wilder, 32, improved to 40-0 with 39 knockouts when he knocked out previously unbeaten Cuban Luis Ortiz in the 10th round in Brooklyn, New York, on March 3.

Finally, Ali Modu Sherriff Joins APC after months of dilly dallying

0

He has been known to have a primary constituency: His personal ambition. Ali Modu Sheriff, Billionaire-in fact, he is rumored to own half of Niger republic, finally berthed in the All Progressives Congress, APC, a party he was believed to be working for even when he was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The former governor of Borno state and three time senator moves back to his natural constituency, dragging with him Alhaji Gambo Lawan, who once ventured into governorship candidacy of Borno in 2015 under the Umbrella of PDP. Indications are that no representative from the Borno State government will be part of the reception, indicating that it is not yet Uhuru for the embattled multi Millionaire. This is coming on the heels of recent invitations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to account for how he raised $72 million (N12 billion) to buy a Gulfstream aircraft, Model G650, after leaving office as a governor. But they should not have bothered but for the allegation of a dubious extortion of $200 million for the procurement of Boko Haram ceasefire under a former administration. Sherriff was the governor when the deal was brokered in 2014, and has been the go between in the negotiations and consultations involving a foreign government. Although he was granted bail on self recognition, it is believed that he immediately decided to formalize his membership of the ruling party, the only umbrella that could protect him from the sweeping broom of investigations.

Sherriff had been in the news for the wrong reasons. He and the governor of Borno state has been trading verbal missiles on who is the brain behind Boko Haram, which seems to be the Albatross he has to carry to his grave. His short tenure as the interim Chairman of the PDP was tumultuous, with all indications pointing towards sit-tightism, until finally he was all but dislodged from the position. He will be received by the APC chairman, John Oyegun, and top party officials.

Senate in Turmoil over alleged Executive Persecution

0

Contrary to speculations that the Senate will tow the line of the house of Representative in mulling the issue of impeachment, the Senate chose a safe path of blacklisting all executive bill. Though it is not clear which of the bills they are targeting, sources indicate that they have resolved to keep all executive bill in view “pending the time when the executive will end Senate persecution”

One would have expected the Senate to act within their powers to institute an inquiry into the case of the alleged “executive lawlessness” that the green chambers regard as constituting an impeachable offense. In recent times, the relation between the Legislative and the executive has reached a new low. Fingers are being pointed to the presidency in connection with the abduction of the Mace in the upper chambers, and Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, had a closed door meeting with Vice president Yemi Osinbajo. The outcome of the meeting is not clear.

Within the same period, Senator Dino Melaye has been under severe confrontation with the police that necessitated  his arrest, escape and rearrest in a hospital where he is receiving treatment. Then came the letter to the Senate by the presidency informing them they have withdrawn over four million dollars to pay the US for TUCANO jets without informing the National Assembly, and now fell short of ordering them to add it to the 2018 budget. The budget is yet to be approved after the first quarter of the year. The senate held a closed session where they discussed the crisis hitting the senate, and resolved on a joint committee with the green Chambers. At the end, Saraki announced this to the house.

“This legislature is a true representation of democracy and as long as we defend this legislature, we defend democracy in this country,
“We also resolved the need to tighten the security at the National Assembly and I’m calling on all members of the public to please cooperate with us.
“Clearly, there are some loopholes here and we need to tighten them.
“A constitution of a joint committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives also resolved to investigate the incident of the 18th of April, to look at the factors leading to it and to ensure that such never happens again at the National Assembly.
“We also directed our committee on Security, Intelligence and Police to engage with the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Inspector General of Police to look at how to strengthen the security of the National Assembly to ensure that these security lapses will not reoccur.”

Europa League: Wenger’s Last Chance Of Winning Laurel With Arsenal

0

Arsenal have little time to digest Arsene Wenger’s long-awaited decision to end his 22-year reign as a Europa League semi-final with Atletico Madrid offers the outgoing manager a chance to salvage some of his lost credit with the club’s fans.

Wenger admitted he stepped aside to unite a fanbase fed up with years of mediocre results having been spoiled by success and silky football in the first decade of the Frenchman’s reign.
Fourteen years on from Arsenal’s last Premier League title, for so long Wenger could defend his record by consistent qualification for the Champions League.

However, a 19-year run in Europe’s premier club competition came to an end this season and Arsenal’s only chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League is by winning the Europa League.

To do so, though, Wenger will need to achieve something that he couldn’t even manage in his peak years in charge — win a European trophy.

His two final losses in the 2000 UEFA Cup to Galatasaray and against Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League, allied to a Cup Winners’ Cup final defeat by Werder Bremen when manager of Monaco in 1992, handed him the ignominy of being the only manager ever to reach the finals of all three European club competitions and lose every one.

Winning three FA Cups in the last four years did little to appease Arsenal fans’ demand for change.

However, Wenger’s legacy will be looked on far more kindly if be could bow out in his homeland next month in Lyon by guaranteeing Champions League football for his successor.
“I’m happy now we can all talk about his legacy and let’s not forget that we still have to win the Europa League,” said Arsenal’s all-time top goalscorer Thierry Henry on the day Wenger announced his departure.

“Let’s not get lost in celebrating the end of his era. The team has to win the Europa League. It would be an amazing achievement and Arsene never won in Europe before so it would be a great way to give him a good exit.”

Hopes that Wenger’s announcement would galvanise the support for the final few weeks of his reign were confounded by a subdued atmosphere for Sunday’s 4-1 win over West Ham at the Emirates.

But Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis insisted there will be “an electric atmosphere” on Thursday night with far more at stake for the club.

The hosts are likely to need to feed off some positive energy from the stands to build a lead to take to Madrid in a week’s time against European specialists Atletico.
Since Diego Simeone took charge seven years ago, Atletico have reached five European semi-finals, and have only been eliminated by bitter rivals Real Madrid for the past four seasons in the Champions League.

With Atletico sitting comfortably in second in La Liga and already assured of Champions League football next season, Simeone was able to ease the physical toil on a small squad by resting a number of key players for Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Real Betis.

That was Atletico’s 11th straight clean sheet at the Wanda Metropolitano to emphasise Arsenal’s need to take a first-leg lead to Spain.

However, the Gunners’ chances were not aided by the inclusion of an old foe in Diego Costa in the Atletico squad as he looks set to shrug off a hamstring injury.

Costa scored four goals in six previous appearances against Arsenal in three years at Chelsea.
