2023 There May Be No Election – Attahiru Jega, Former INEC Boss

0

By Akinwale Kasali

With less than 14 months to the 2023 General Election, former Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, fears the election may not hold if the insecurity issue that has crippled several activities over the years in the country are not addressed soonest.

The former Electoral umpire warned that unless the insecurity challenges ravaging the country are adequately stopped, the 2023 general election may not hold.

Jega made this assertion in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital while delivering a keynote address at the Fourth Senator Abiola Ajimobi Annual Roundtable, and the 72nd posthumous birthday of the former governor of Oyo State, held at the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan.

He lamented that the State of insecurity in the country is worrisome and devastating, urging the Party at the center, the All Progressives Congress, APC and President Muhammadu Buhari to address the situation in earnest as 2023 election fast approaches.

In commemoration of Late Ajimobi’s two Years remembrance, the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Resource Centre,  built by Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation in his memory, was inaugurated by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Jega said security was very key to the conduct of any election whose outcome would be acceptable to parties involved.

According to him, insecurity which is ravaging the country poses a serious threat to the 2023 general elections, saying the threats must be effectively tackled to ensure the conduct of the elections.

Jega said, “Unless elections are conducted in an environment that is peaceful and secure, its integrity and even the legitimacy of the outcome of that election will be questioned.

“Security challenges undermine electoral integrity. It constrains or disrupts preparations and conduct of elections and it leads to partial or totally illegitimate electoral outcomes.

“As we look forward to the 2023 general elections, there is increasing apprehension that the pervasive insecurity situation in the country may present a formidable obstacle if not an obstruction to that election.

“If not appropriately and effectively mitigated, security challenges would pose the most serious danger to the integrity of the election process if it evens allows the election to be conducted.”

He added that the 2007 general election was regarded as the most flawed election in the country because security agents either worked at cross-purposes or worked for different masters.

However, wife of late Ajimobi, Florence, who is the president of SAAF, said the Resource Centre was donated as part of the contribution of the Foundation towards giving people access to quality education.

Speaking on the forthcoming 2023 Polls, she said, “Election security and good governance, as a theme, is intended to prepare the grounds for peaceful and proper elections in the country in earnest and substantially eliminate any impediment in our transition processes.

“Consequently, when the process of attaining public leadership status is effectively and transparently harnessed, a better managed country and citizenry emerge, to the delight and satisfaction of all who desire it and the disappointment of those who detest and sabotage it.

“The collaboration strongly believes that our country shall emerge stronger and compellingly more purposeful for its citizenry once the process of assuming leadership is further strengthened and the voice and choice of the people are truly reflected in the quality of managers and management which emanate from the renewed process”, the widow of Ajimobi said.

Prison Official Proffers Solution To Congestion As Ekiti CJ Frees 69 Inmates

The Controller of the Correctional Centre in Ado Ekiti, Mr. Olayemi Ojo, has revealed that the Centre has been overburdened by too many inmates.

Speaking while receiving the Ekiti State Chief Judge, Justice John Adeyeye, who was on a visit to the Correctional Centre, the Controller described the visit as timely as it would help resolving some of the challenges.

According to Mr Olayemi, the facility was designed to accomodate less than four hundred inmates but has  been over-stretched with about seven hundred inmates.

He urged the Chief Judge to encourage Magistrates to make use of Non-Custodial sentences, such as community services, as such will drastically help in decongesting  Correctional Centres.

The Controller promised to make his men available anywhere and anytime the need arises for such services and appealed to the Chief Judge to make the visit a regular exercise.

Justice Adeyeye, in his remarks, appreciated stakeholders in the administration of justice especially the Judges, Magistrates, Lawyers, Police and others for their patient and cooperation.

He urged the released inmates to be of good behaviour as the long hand of the law is awaiting anyone found disrupting the peace of the society.

During the visit, a total of 583 cases were reviewed –  11 females and 527 males. 45 inmates were released unconditionally, 19 were granted bail, four let off on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Julius Ajibare for having no case to answer, one struck out while three bail conditions were varied.

The Chief Judge, who was on his first official visit to the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti, since assumption of duty in June, 2021, lauded the Controller and his men for keeping a clean and healthy environment, thereby making the facility more accommodating and conducive for the inmates.

There have been attacks on Correctional Centres in the country of recent, culminating in the escape of some of the inmates and destruction of facilities at the Centre.

Virtually all the Centres are overcrowded with inmates, with some of them accomodating double the number of inmates, leading, atimes, to outbreak of communicable diseases.

Occassional visits by Chief Judges and ceremonial granting of amnesty by Governors have had little or no impact on the congestion of the centres.

Bode George To Akande; ”Thrash The Book; You Will Set Your House On Fire Over Tinubu”

By Akinwale Kasali

Reactions have been coming like claps of thunder since Chief Bisi Akande’s book, ‘My Participation’. It has generated  controversies, accusations and counter accusations from different quarters pitching, especially, Afenifere leader and elder statesman, Pa Ayo Adebanjo against Akande, a former Osun State Governor.

One of such reactions came from former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Bode George who lashed at the former All Progressives Congress, APC, Interim Chairman.

Bode George asked Akande  not to cause trouble for himself because of the Presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

George stated that the book written by Akande is malicious and offensive to Yoruba elders, calling on him to either thrash the book or withdraw it with immediate effect.

At a Press Conference held by the PDP stalwart, he described the book as “shameful” and “disappointing”, stressing that Akande must apologise to Yoruba elders publicly.

He said, “Akande must apologise openly to Yoruba elders. The attitude that he displayed is not acceptable in a civilised society. Is it his legacy to dishonour Yoruba elders?

“At his age, Akande should not set his house on fire because of Tinubu’s ambition. I felt very bad as a Yoruba man and as a Nigerian.

“He has maligned Yoruba elders and highly respectable people in the country. He was busy giving kudos to Bola Tinubu. Baba Akande is from Osun State and Tinubu is the only man that he could single out to praise.

“From the reaction to his book, you must have heard what Baba Adebanjo said. How are we going to be regarded by others? Is that the right thing to do? Baba Akande should withdraw the book that he has authored. It is very shameful. He is older than me and I don’t expect an elderly person to behave in that manner. He must apologise to those he has offended.”

The Atona Odua of Yourbaland added that he wondered why it was only Tinubu that the former Osun State Governor would praise, stressing that the former Lagos State Governor has not shown good leadership having cornered Lagos State’s resources to himself and family members.

“Tinubu wants to be the President of Nigeria. His wife is a perpetual Senator, his daughter is the Iyaloja General and his son is in charge of the Lagos State Signage Company. He has not been able to present his educational certificates and yet he wants to be President,” he said.

Though he has not announced his interest in running for the  2023 Presidential election, he may be consulting, aligning and realigning before making his decision known.

Senator Ibikunle Amosun, former Ogun State Governor has been in the news of late, following his posters and campaign materials that have flooded the social media. Political watchers say it is an indication that he may soon announce his ambition to run for the 2023 Presidency. He has always been interested, a source said.

Aside his campaign posters flooding the internet, the two-term former Governor representing Ogun Central Senatorial District at the Senate,  posters were, also, seen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital, inscribed with ‘Ibikunle Amosun for President’.

Part of the Campaign material is a customized wine with the picture of the ex-Governor on it and an inscription of “Amosun for Presidency”

A logo, with an inscription: “DG,” appeared on the wine, suggesting that the person with the initial must be the brain behind the bottle of wine branded with Amosun’s campaign poster.

Before now, it was earlier reported by Premium Times that the 63-Year Old politician’s campaign banners were hung on one side of the NNPC bridge, along the Kuto-Okemosan road, while another was placed close to the popular Panseke market in the State capital.

In the campaign banners, Amosun was dressed in Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa attires, symbolising the three major ethnic groups in the country. The banner had an inscription ‘Your voice, your choice, SIA (Senator Ibikunle Amosun) for President.’

Also, vehicles branded with  similar inscriptions were sighted in the State Capital, indicating that he may soon made his Presidential ambition pronounced.

Anyim Pius Anyim and Hon Sidi Bage

A prominent Northern Traditional Ruler, the Emir of Lafia, Hon Sidi Bage, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,  has recommended frontline Presidential aspirant, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, as a capable hand to solve the problems of Nigeria.

Justice Bage stated this on Thursday in Abuja at the Awards/Honours Symposium organized by The Nigerian News to mark the 5th Anniversary of the media outfit.

He said that after listening to the former President of the Senate’s speech at an award ceremony in Lagos recently, he was left with no doubt that Anyim understands the problems of  Nigeria and that he is capable of fixing them.

Bage described the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) as Nostradamus who has seen and understood what Nigeria should be in future.

“He knows what Nigeria should be today and tomorrow”, he insisted urging, “let all Nigerians read that speech.”

“He (Anyim) made me believe that we still have leaders into whose hands we can entrust Nigeria.”

Bage, himself one of the awardees, commended the organisers of the award for recognizing the leadership qualities in the PDP Presidential aspirant.

In his goodwill message, Anyim lamented that Nigeria is operating like a nation without dreams and urged those in leadership positions or jostling for leadership to do everything possible to regenerate the Nigerian dream as well as the consciousness to drive the dream.

While thanking the award organisers for the honour done him, Anyim assured Nigerians that he would not disappoint them.

In his speech, the Publisher of the Nigerian News, Chief Philip Agbese, said the Awardees were selected based on track record of performance and service.

Food Crisis: Terrorists Have Occupied 50% Of Our Land, Emir Cries Out

Muhammad Haruna

By Uche Mbah

The Emir of Wase, HRH Muhammad Haruna, has said his people can no longer go to farm since bandits have taken over 50% of their land.

This, according to him, spells doom for food production and remains a panacea for famine.

Terrorists under the guise of cattle rearers have done untold damages to farmers’ crops through their cattle, a situation that the Federal Government appears helpless to handle.

According to the Emir, those who still manage to farm cannot conveniently feed demand.

The Monarch said these things Thursday in Jos at a colloquium and fund raising organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Plateau State Council with the theme: “Tackling food crisis in Nigeria through robust research for sustainable development.”

“I am a farmer, and majority of the people in my domain are farmers. Two things I want to mention is the issue of security. A lot of us leave the villages to the city to look for greener pastures because we cannot afford to go to our farms. This is not because we are lazy to be given fish. If the atmosphere is conducive for us to work on our farms, the number of people in city will reduce because they will go back to the villages.

“We want to farm because of the vast land we have which God has blessed us with. There is basically nothing you cannot farm in Wase. Unfortunately, 50 percent of the landmass has been taken over by terrorists. Our people cannot go to farm. This week a very ugly incident happened in one of the villages in Wase and for the first time, Governments of the Federal, State and Local took the right action by deploying armed soldiers and police to go and flush out all these people.

“I want to appreciate them for doing the job we have been appealing for years. We are making a special appeal that this should continue so that next year, we will be able to go to farm. The second, about 70% of food that is produced in Plateau State is sold out before next planting season. Some people have taken responsibility, they will give you fertilizer and everything you require to farm but the disadvantage is that they take 70% of what you produce.

“We are in December, maize in Wase is N28,000 per bag, imagine by April, how much it will cost. That is the food that is considered the poor man’s food. The one considered the rich man food, rice is N26,000 or N27,000. The kind of problem we are likely to have in Plateau and by extension, Nigeria, if people are hungry during harvest period, imagine will be the next fesituation months.”

Officially, UK Withdraws Travel Ban on Nigeria, Others

The United Kingdom has withdrawn an earlier statement, effective December 6, suspending visa applications from all red list countries, which include Nigeria.

In a statement, Wednesday, the British High Commission said consequently UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) “will lift the pause on processing visitor visas in all countries previously on the red list,”

“From 4:00 am on 15th December, all countries currently on the red list will be removed. In line with the lifting of red list restrictions, UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) will lift the pause on processing visitor visas in all countries previously on the red list,” the statement reads.

In their December 6, 2021 circular, the High Commission said they are placing the ban “To support the UK Government’s aim to protect public health from COVID-19 and associated variants of concern (VOC), UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) will pause making decisions on visitor visa applications in all red list countries, including Nigeria until travel restrictions are lifted.

“Visit visas cover travel to the UK for tourism, visiting family and friends, undertaking short-term business activities (for example, attending meetings), undertaking short-term studies (under 6 months), taking part in research or exchange programmes as an academic, medical reasons (for example, receiving private medical treatment).

“If you apply for a visit visa in a red list country and you meet the UK Immigration Rules, your application will be paused. You will not receive a decision on your visit visa application whilst red list travel restrictions remain in place.”

It is believed that with the discovery that the new Covid 19 variant, Omicron, is very mild, the British Government had to soft pedal on their planned lock down and travel restrictions.

Omicron, though having increased infection rate, has recorded no deaths globally.

EFCC Should Verify Tinubu, Akande’s Source Of Wealth

0

By Ayo Adebanjo

About a week ago, last Thursday, 7 December to be exact at the presentation of the book “MY PARTICIPATION” by Chief Bisi Akande it was said that Chief Bisi Akande stated in the book that I brought pressure on Bola Tinubu to build the house for me. But since Bola Tinubu himself was present at the presentation I expected  him, within a few days, to refute such a malicious falsehood about me emanating from his Man Friday.

I hold this view because Bola Tinubu just some three years ago, on the occasion of the presentation of my auto-biography “SAYING IT AS IT IS”, said that but  for my incorruptibility and strength of character he, Bola Tinubu, would not have been Governor of Lagos State in 1999. What then could he be demanding from me after his two term governorship to make me pressurize him to build a house for me, when I did not get a naira from him before he became the Governor?

There has been a lot of pressure on me not to react to Chief Bisi Akande’s tantrums, he is a neophyte, a beneficiary of a struggle he never took part in. I have been urged to keep to the adage not to “Answer a fool less you reduce yourself to his level, but there is also an adage that says, “Answer a fool less he thinks he is wise”.

A lot has been said in the press and the social media to demolish tantrums. But I owe a duty to myself and to put the record straight for posterity about the big lie that Bola Tinubu built my house in Lekki for me.

I, therefore, deny categorically that my house at Lekki was built with my resources through the sale of three developed properties, loan from GTBank, and the sale of undeveloped landed property given me by my late leader Chief Obafemi Awolowo of blessed memory.

The details are as follows:

  1. A 4 bedroom duplex with 2 bedroom flat enclosed with 2 undeveloped plots at plot 4, block 14, Nuru Oniwo Street, Aguda Surulere, Lagos State, this is where I was living before moving to Lekki. The house was commissioned in 1972 by Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

A wing of the duplex was once occupied by a staff of the security outfit then known as “special branch” headed then by the late Alhaji M.D. Yussuf who later became Inspector General of Police when General Olusegun Obasanjo was the Head of State.

It was later occupied by one of the wives Chief Pius Akinyelure, who often visit his wife there in company of Senator Bola Tinubu.

The gate of this property was forced open by Abacha security forces when NADECO was holding a sendoff party for American ambassador Walter Carrington in my house, I took the Federal Government to court for damages and I was awarded #1million naira which has not been paid till today by the Federal Government, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba SAN, was my counsel.

The house was sold to St Baths Aglican Church, Aguda, Surulere.

  1. Two storey building at Odedola Street, Surulere, Lagos State. I bought it through an Estate Agent by name Mr. Shiwoniku who has relocated to UK, he has a brother who is a legal practitioner in Abuja.

The house was sold to a Ghanaian by name Mr Akappo. He is still alive and he lives in one of the flat in the building.

  1. Four storey building with a warehouse on the ground floor and six flats on top. It was commissioned by Chief Awolowo in 1977.

I inherited the plot of 45’X100’ from my mother Salamotu Anomo-Adebanjo, who built a bungalow on it.

She bought the land when I was in primary school in 1940 from one Pa. Idowu Onitiri for £20, which she paid by installment of £10, £7, £3. His son Akanbi Onitiri, executed the conveyance for me without extra payment after showing him the purchase receipts from his father, when I was developing it in 1976.

Akanbi Onitiri is the father of Sumbo Onitiri, a well known estate surveyor in Lagos.

The building was sold to a woman through an estate agent.

I then took a loan from GTBank to complete the house in Lekki where I am living now.

When the interest on the loan became unbearable, I was compelled to sell the undeveloped land given to me by Chief Awolowo in Dide-Olu Estate in Maroko Victoria Island. One Mr. Ade Otusanya a friend of my son Femi Ayo-Adebanjo bought the land.

The contractor who built my Lekki house is Engr. Hakeem Sulaiman, Senior Partner of Messrs HA associates.

The Electrical and Mechanical Contractor is Engr. Tokunbo Oshokoya, Senior Partner of Messrs Oshea Projects.

The Architect is Mr. Deji Johnson. The Quantity Surveyor is the late Otunba T.B Adebayo.

The Lekki property, the house in my village, Isanya Ogbo, and 3 Bedroom flat in a town house, at Omorinre Street in Lekki are the properties I have in the whole world.

I hereby authorize the EFCC to verify the above facts.

It is alleged that Chief Bisi Akande’s building at Ila-Orogun, which I understand is more than double in expanse of my house in Lekki and some other properties he has in Lagos and abroad were financed by Bola Tinubu.

His house in Ibadan was also alleged to have been built by the contractor that built the secretariat in Oshogbo, when he was the Governor of Osun State.

I hereby challenge Chief Bisi Akande to clear the air by disclosing the source of financing these properties as I have done above.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the great philanthropist should also disclose the source of his wealth with which he bankrolled the elections of APC in the Southwest and that of General Muhammad Buhari and his various properties in Lagos.

He should also authorize the EFCC to verify such details as I have done above.

Chief Adebanjo, Afenifere Leader, released this statement to the Press on 16/12/202
