Hope Uzodimma

Governor Hope Uzodimma on Saturday gave a rare Christmas gift  to all elected officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC), across levels – Booth, Ward, Local Government, State and Zone –  in Imo State, announcing a monthly allowance that will be enforced immediately.

It was a pronouncement that electrified the Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri where elected officials of the APC in the state met for the first time after the Party Congresses to interact with the Governor.

Apart from the allowances to be paid to the Party officials, Governor Uzodimma also empowered them to scrutinize contracts in their locality before such contracts could be approved for execution by contractors.

He told them to be courageous, bold and approach their duty with serious-mindedness,  commitment and trust in God that the APC will make a difference in our society under their leadership.

Governor Uzodimma reminded them that the APC is the Party in power in Imo State and remains the Party to beat and as such, his Government will not shy away from supporting the Party that created the Government.

“We will grow the Party. The Party will be involved in my Government. We will support the Party that created the Government.”

Governor Uzodimma said they should consider it a rare privilege that they were elected by their people to serve them, hence they owe God a lot of gratitude.

He used the opportunity to remind them that the opposition has been ploting so much evil against APC members and their leaders and encouraged the Party faithful to be at alert.

On his part, he reiterated that his Government will do all within its powers to ensure that Imo State is safe and that any one working to destabilise the system or encouraging criminality, no matter how highly placed, would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Regrettably, the Governor informed that two Councillors were recently killed and that those who killed them have been arrested and they have owned up to the crime.

He also hinted that 18 persons are now in custody in connection with different dimensions of crimes against the people and that they have also given dependable evidence about their sponsors who, he said, he will make known at Imo State stakeholders by January 3, 2022.

“Don’t be intimidated. So long as I remain Governor in this state, they will face the law. We have evidence of those who are behind the insecurity based on information from the suspects. By January 3, 2022, when I will hold Imo stakeholders meeting I will reel out their names one after the other with the evidence of their role.”

Earlier in his remarks, the APC Chairman in Imo State, MacDonald Ebere thanked Governor Uzodimma for finding time to interface with his officials from all the 27 LGAs and 305 INEC Wards in Imo State.

Ebere told the Governor that the Party is grateful to him for ensuring that the exercises that brought the officials on board were rancour-free and that the people elected their choice of leaders in line with his resolve to return power to the people.

The APC Chairman  however urged all the officials to carry every party member along, and to work in harmony to grow the Party.

On his part, Ebere promised once more that he will not discriminate against anyone in the Party and beckoned on all party leaders and members to come on board an APC bus that will take everyone to their desired destination.

The event was graced by the Deputy Governor, Prof Placid Njoku, the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Kennedy Ibe and his deputy, Rt .Hon. Amara Iwuanyanwu, members of the Federal House of Representatives  like Princess Miriam Onuoha, principal officers and members of the Imo State House of Assembly.

Also in attendance were the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie,  serving and former Commissioners, political appointees, other top government officials and key political leaders in APC from Imo State.

Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Awwal Gambo, has warned Naval Personnel against misconduct saying anyone found culpable in economic sabotage would be brought to book.

Admiral Gambo gave the warning at the headquarters of the Central Naval Command (CNC), Yenagoa, shortly after commissioning of some projects.

The Naval boss, commended the Central Naval Command for its operations and recent arrests noting that the expectation of the naval headquarters and the defense headquarters was to ensure good conduct of personnel.

According to him, any personnel found culpable in perpetration of economic sabotage would face the law.

“So far, so good. Central Naval Command has been doing very well in operations as visible in the arrests that are being undertaken.

“I have just briefed the FOC on the expectations of the Naval Headquarters and Defence Headquarters in making sure that any personnel that is found culpable in perpetration of economic sabotage of our country should be brought to book and used as an example.

“So I congratulate the Command, NNS Soroh, and the Eastern fleet because there was a good show during the Chief of Naval Staff Annual Sea inspection and Exercise Quiet Waters. It was quite instructive.”

Projects commissioned by Gambo include the Mast Island and the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS), Soroh Regulating Office.

Commenting on the projects, he commended the leadership of the Command for adding value, stressing that the more value the leadership adds would serve as an encouragement for those that would come after them.

Earlier, the Commander of NNS Soroh, Commodore Patrick Effah, had explained to Gambo and his entourage that having a Regulating Office became imperative to boost the operations of NNS Soroh especially because it involves arrest and detention of suspects for further investigations.

The Commander disclosed that before now, the Base Regulating Office was a container that lacked standard Detention Quarters for the custody of suspects.

He said the new Regulating Office contains five cells, offices and officer of the Day Cabin, which would provide accommodation for criminals and also serve as offices for officers and men involved in the handling of suspects.

First Bank: Otedola, The Battle For Control Continues

0

By Fola James

The appointment of Ahmad Abdullahi as the new chairman of First Bank Holding Plc has opened a new vista in the battle for the control of the oldest commercial bank in the country. Abdullahi was appointed on Friday to replace Remi Babalola, a former Nigeria’s Minister of Finance who departed the bank unceremoniously.

The development comes barely one month after Nnamdi Okonkwo was appointed the Group Managing Director of First Bank Holdco

The bank did not give any reason for the exit of Babalola, who was appointed by CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, early in the year to replace Mrs Ibukun Awosika following the botched removal of Dr Adesola Adeduntan as the managing director of First Bank Nigeria, FBN.

But the magazine learnt that the resignation of the former minister may not be unconnected with the emergence of Otedola as the single largest shareholder of the bank.

It was also learnt that Babalola was not forced to resign from the bank but “he decided to leave as a result of the new realities in the bank because he did not want to be caught up in the intrigues among major owners of the bank who are battling for the soul of the bank,” a top source in the bank told the magazine late Friday.

Femi Otedola
Otedola: His High Stakes Unsettle Nigeria’s Oldest bank

The source who craved anonymity, further informed the magazine that “the appointment of Abdullahi as chairman of Holdco is not unconnected with the ongoing restructuring of the bank as  a result of the recent development concerning its ownership.”

Even though the very reliable source failed to say whether the new appointee was nominated by the Otedola, the source explained that “the businessman has the power to nominate his proxies to the board of FBN and its parent company, following his acquisition of over seven per cent stakes in the bank recently as required by the law”.

On December 9, the business magnate wrote the management of the bank detailing his shares in the bank. Otedola said in the letter that his stakes in the bank include 210 million he holds directly, 1.989 billion through Calvados Global Services Limited, 170 million through Primrose Global Concept, 175 million through Shetland Global, 120 million through Wells Properties and 53 million through Impetus Synergy.

“I have recently acquired additional shares in FBN Holdings Plc (the Company) which has brought my total stake to 7.57 per cent of the issued shares capital of the Company.

“Section 120 of the Companies and Allied Matters Act requires that I give notice in writing o the Company stating amongst other things, the particulars of the shares held by me or my nominees by virtue of which I am a substantial shareholder,” the businessman said in the letter.

Few days after he wrote the letter, Otedola also told reporters in Lagos that he’s not interested in becoming the Chairman of the bank’s holdco as being wrongly speculated. He, however, did not say whether he will nominate persons to represent his interest in one of the nation’s most respected financial institutions.

Speaking on his reported quest to control the bank Otedola said, “as the single biggest stakeholder in the lender, the extant financial laws allow him to nominate persons of his choice into the two boards of the bank.

“Being the single largest shareholder doesn’t mean I must necessarily hold a position in the bank. I believe in allowing competent people to run institutions in a professional manner and to the benefit of all the stakeholders,” he said.

“That is an institution with a world-class corporate governance structure and a strong performing management that creates value and guarantees returns in form of dividends and capital appreciation.”

“I am simply an investor who saw an opportunity in the financial institution and decided to take advantage of it through the investment I have made. My interest, contrary to speculation, is not to become chairman of the bank or its Holdco. Moreover, I am in semi-retirement,” the businessman said.

Meanwhile, the CBN has approved the appointment of Abdullahi as chairman and non-executive director of First Bank Holding Plc.

“The bank had been duly notified of the resignation of Babalola, as chairman of the company against the backdrop of contest by some significant shareholders for control of First Bank Holding Plc,” Osita Nwanisobi, CBN’s Director, Corporate Communications, said on Friday.

The apex bank also described Babalola’s resignation as the chairman of the company as regrettable, adding that the bank has made measured progress since the former finance minister become the chairman of First Bank holdco.

Canada, which recently imposed travel ban on ten African countries including Nigeria, has lifted the travel ban.

The ban was placed due to the alleged discovery of the Omicron Variant of Covid 19 in Nigeria

At a media briefing on Friday, Jean-Yves Duclos, Canada’s Minister of Health, announced the decision to lift the ban effective December 18.

Three weeks ago, the Canadian government banned 10 African countries following the detection of Omicron cases in those countries.

“While we recognise the controversial nature of such a prohibition, we believe it was a necessary measure to slow the arrival of Omicron in Canada and buy us some time,” Duclos said.

“Given the current situation, this measure has served its purpose and is no longer needed.”

Recall that the United Kingdom also lifted the Ban on Nigeria and others after some diplomatic backlash over the Omicron Variant of Covid 19.

The United Kingdom had earlier lifted the ban it placed on Nigeria and other countries. The ban was described but many people and groups as discriminatory of African Countries.

University Don Says Nigeria’s Democracy Is Weak

0
Prof Jeremiah Omotola

By Ayodele Oni

A Political Scientist hàs observed that democracy in Nigeria, the way it is being practised, is very weak.

Prof Jeremiah Omotola, Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), Administration of Federal University, Oye, Ekiti (FUOYE), has, therefore, advocated urgent strengthening of Political institutions in the Country to ensure credible elections which would guarantee strong democracy.

He was delivering an inaugural lecture, titled “The Troubled Trinity: Elections, Democracy and Development in Nigeria”,  as part of activities marking the 5th and 6th combined Convocation ceremonies of FUOYE.

“The process of conducting the political parties’ internal affairs is fraught with deficiencies, they are nothing but undemocratic;  no internal democracy, and this makes the political parties fail as building blocks of democracy.

“Weak opposition parties currently in the Nigerian polity is identified as another issue against Nigeria having strong democracy.

“Opposition parties are largely and seriously fragmented and autocratic with the result that virtually all of them are incapable of providing alternative Government, when the foregoing issues are there weak democracy is inevitable.”

Prof Omotola pointed out that global bodies have scored Nigeria very low and adjudged its democracy as very weak saying that this development calls for concern.

“Weak democracy in Nigeria has led to so many problems such as unemployment, widespread poverty, uneven distribution of wealth and opportunities and lack of basic social amenities among others.

“Due to the shortcomings in the integrity of our elections, it is likely for Nigerians to have weak democracy.

“In my comparative research, I was able to find out that our democracy is still very weak and it is largely connected to the poor integrity and poor quality of our elections.

“Unless those weaknesses and contradictions are addressed, it is going to be extremely difficult for our elections to promote democracy and when democracy is not deep and strong, development is going to be faulty for years.”

The DVC also lamented gender inequality in the Political system in the country which he stated was not in tandem with democratic emancipation.

Prof Omotola identified gender inequality as an impediment to progress by preventing the provision of viable platforms for adequate representation. While observing that no country could survive without paying attention to gender equity in politics,

He gave statistics of the absymal performance and representation of women in the Nigerian polity since the emergence of democratic rule in 1999.

He stated  in particular that only seven women have dared to contest the Nigerian presidency since we began democracy and none of them have performed significantly well inspite of the fact that ours is a country that have a male versus female population ratio of 50:50, if not that women are even more than men in population.

He also lamented that of about 74 women who have contested Governorship polls in the country, none has won.

“In terms of symbolic representation in politics, women in Nigeria are far behind. This has made it very difficult for Laws that would favour the women to be made in the country.”

Another challenge facing democracy, he added has to do with the appointment of non professionals to handle conduct of elections in the country.

Prof Omotola cited an instance where a Vetinary Doctor was appointed as the national chairman of the nation’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), adding that such development amounts to “a deficiency, a capacity gap.”

The University don, also pointed out that lNEC’s operations are being centralized to the detriment of federating states that should be allowed to have independent electoral bodies to cater for their peculiarities.

“We claim to practice a federation but all powers are virtually centralized at the detriment of the federating states. This makes INEC the only body conducting elections for all the states.”

He, therefore, suggested that INEC should be unbundled and made to delegate the conduct of elections and not centralize it.

“In terms of ideology, in Nigeria today, it is absolutely impossible to talk about differences in ideology of political parties as we have the same political gladiators in all the parties leading to easy cross carpeting and impeding their capacity to play the role of building blocks of democracy.”

On possible panacea to have strong democracy, the don advised that there was the need for urgent strengthening of Political institutions in the Country to ensure credible elections which would guarantee strong democracy.

The Professor of Comparative Politics, added that strong democracy, when achieved, would lead to meaningful growth and development for Nigeria.

He, therefore, urged the Federal Government to promote quality, free and fair elections that would build strong democracy.

He also recommended that government should give autonomy to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying that autonomy and electoral administration must be handled by independent, professional and competent institutions.
