Edo Train Station Attack

By Adesina Soyooye

The Station Manager and the Head of Security at the Igueben Train Station, Edo State, are among the 31 people abducted by terrorists in an attack on the Station.

The terrorists, already identified by the Police as rogue Fulani herdsmen, invaded the Station on Saturday 7th January, and made away with 32 people. One of the abducted  passengers escaped from their custody. 31 people are still missing, and many others injured.

One of the terrorists has, however, been arrested by the Police.

The terrorists invaded the Train Station  while the passengers were waiting to board a train to Warri. Eye witnesses said that, in their dozens, the terrorists, armed with AK 47 assault rifles, embarked on a shooting spree as soon as they arrived.

Among those abducted were the Train Station Manager, Godwin Okpe, the Head of Security, Mr Ikhayere, Victor Osarobho, a son of the soil, and the Station Ticket Clerk, Mr Akhere.

This is the second time terrorists will attack yrain Passengers. The first was a bloody attack on an Abuja-Kaduna bound train.

The train was almost in Kaduna when it was ambushed by terrorists who killed eight people and kidnapped 65 others.

The passengers were later  released in batches, at allegedly, N100 per person. They were held for months. The last batch, 23 in number, was released after eight months.

Meanwhile, Delta State Governor and the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, has described the attack on the Train Station as very sad and unfortunate.

In a statement signed on his behalf by his Chief Press Secretary, Olisa Ifeajika, dated 8th January, 2023, Okowa accused the Federal Government of playing with the lives of Nigerians. He asked the FG to “drop its lethargic attitude and cosmetic approach toward fighting insecurity in the Country.”

The statement reads in part:  “As a Country, we must be deeply concerned about the activities of armed groups and non-State actors trying to destabilise our Nation.

“With the General Elections a few weeks away, this dastardly act is not just worrisome but condemnable, and we urge Security Agencies to quickly track and apprehend the gunmen and rescue the victims.”

A news break on Sunday, January 8, 2023, alleged that Dr Raymond Dokpesi, has been arrested by the United Kingdom Police.

Reports say he was arrested aboard a Lufthansa Airline, LH916 which he boarded to London at Frankfurt.

However, on arrival, an announcement was made on board for everybody to sit down and not leave the plane yet. The aircraft parked at Terminal 2, Heathrow Airport.

Thereafter, Policemen came in and, on identifying himself, he was escorted out.

Dokpesi is the Founder of Daar Communications Ltd, the owner of Ray Power and African International Television, AIT.

He is a politician and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Aged 71 years, Dokpesi is a native of Edo State.

He is the second high profile Nigerian Politician to be arrested by the UK Police under one year. In June 2022, former Deputy President of the Senate, Dr Ike Ekweremadu, was arrested at the same airport, alongside his wife, Dr Beatrice Ekweremadu. Both were taken into custody on allegations of organ harvesting. They, allegedly, facilitated the trip of a homeless 21- year old Nigerian to London for the purpose of harvesting his kidney to save the life of their daughter, Sonia, who is suffering from a rare Kidney disease.

Both of them, a Nigerian medical doctor based in London, and Sonia, are under prosecution.

While Mrs Ekweremadu has been granted bail, the former Senate President and the doctor were refused bail. The Judge, inspite of documents and written letters of  reassurances, including one signed by the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, insist Ekweremadu is a flight risk.

At the time of filing this report, Dr Dokpesi’s alleged offence has not been made public.

Kogi: Real Reason Gov. Bello ls After Dr Ibrahim, The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland

0
Yahaya Bello and Dr Ado Ibrahim

By Gideon Njoku

“You are in the habit of not receiving me at the Airport on my return from Trips”, Gov Bello fired at the revered Ohinoyi

A foremost Traditional Ruler in Kogi State is about to be humiliated by the State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

Bello says that the respected Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Dr Ado Ibrahim, has committed a couple of cardinal sins against him, his Government and the people of Kogi State.

One of the sins which has been counting against the Ohinoyi is not going to the Airport to stand and receive the youthful Governor each time he returned from a trip.

This was one of the issues raised against Dr Ibrahim in a query issued him to answer within 24 hours. It was dated 6th January 2023 and signed by a Director in the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs, Enimola Eniola.

“It is on record that in time past, topmost Traditional Rulers, including the President, Kogi State Council of Chiefs, do receive  the Governor of the State on his return from critical missions undertaken on behalf of the State. But you have chosen to disdain the office of the Executive Governor, and this time, you did it with effrontery before the number one citizen of Nigeria.”, the query read in part.

Ohinoyi’s immediate problem began on 29th December, 2022, when President Muhammadu Buhari visited Kogi State to commission some projects executed by the Government under Bello. The Traditional Ruler did not go out to queue to receive the President. That day had started for him on a sad and tragic note.

That  early morning, a bomb planted in front of the Ohinoyi’s Palace had exploded, and killed four people. Reports said that the Ohinoyi was so  shattered and shaken that he couldn’t go to receive the President at the Airport.

However, that did not worry Bello. In the frame of mind the Traditional Ruler was, the Governor  expected him at the Airport to receive Mr President. For being absent, in addition to his other sin of not receiving Bello on return from trips, the Governor ordered that he be queried.

The topmost Traditional Ruler was given 48 hours within which to answer the query, after which he might still be hauled before a Panel to answer questions.

The full text of the query reads:

“It has been observed with serious concern that you have exhibited deliberate attitude and actions capable of bringing Kogi State and Ebira land in particular to grave disrepute. These actions are quite unbecoming of a revered Royal Father of your status.

“Specifically, you were aware through many fora of the glorious visit of Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigerian Armed Forces, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari to Okene on 29th December, 2022 to commission land mark projects executed by our dear Governor, His Excellency, Alh. Yahaya Bello.

“In a flagrant disregard to the persons and high offices of the President and the Governor, you bluntly refused to come out and receive the President at the designated venue rightly approved by the Executive Governor of the State.

“It might interest you to note that official courtesy demands that when a personality of a President occupying the highest office in the land is visiting or even passing through the State, the Governor and top Public Officers including topmost Traditional Rulers are expected to receive him as a mark of respect for him and the Office he occupies. It is on record that in time past, Topmost Traditional Rulers including the President, Kogi State Council of Chiefs do receive the Governor of the State on his return from critical missions undertaken on behalf of the State.

“But, you have chosen to disdain the office of the Executive Governor, and this time, you did it with effrontery before the number one citizen of Nigeria.

“This action of yours is an act of insubordination and disloyalty to the President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigerian Armed Forces, the Executive Governor of Kogi State and the entire Ebira nation as a whole. It portends grave danger to the Security of the State and laying bad precedence for Traditional Institution of the State.

“In view of the above, I have been directed to request you to forward a written explanation within 48 hours why disciplinary action should not be taken against you for these acts of insubordination and disloyalty.

“Oral explanations may be required from you when a panel is set up to study your case. It is expected that you will accord priority to the content of this letter, Your Royal Majesty.”

Not a few people allege that  the Governor has always been disrespectful of Traditional Rulers. The query to the Ohinoyi, they point out, is the limit of the Governor’s arrogance.

OPINION: Tinubu’s Promise To Make  Yahoo Boys Tech Experts Is An Endorsement Of Criminality

0

By Onwuasoanya FCC Jones

In what his promoters have primed as one of his most inspiring speeches since this campaign commenced, Bola Ahmed Tinubu was quoted as saying that he will convert the so-called “Yahoo-Yahoo” boys into Tech Experts who would produce chips for industries.

The former Lagos State Governor was also quoted as describing himself as a very knowledgeable man who found a way to tame the Atlantic in Lagos and hence would bring that knowledge to bear in creating wealth and new opportunities for Nigerians.

If anyone wanted to take Asiwaju’s claim to knowledgeability seriously, his apparent lack of understanding of the simplest technological facts exposes his frightening ignorance and further confirms his false claims about the wonders he purportedly performed in Lagos.

For the avoidance of doubts, Lagos is naturally positioned to be the most prosperous and most developed city in the entire Africa. This vision would have been met, had the blueprint of visionary leaders like Pa Lateef Jakande and even Military Administrator Buba Marwa been kept to.

Lagos is today rated as one of the world’s biggest slums because of Tinubu’s poverty of knowledge, bigotry and other untidy tendencies.

With its high internal revenue, its huge population, natural resources and strategic geographical location, individuals like Tinubu should have been in big trouble for squandering the wealth of Lagos and dampening its prospects for development. But that’s a story that has been told many times and by different people, so, I would rather we focus on the blunder of “converting yahoo boys to tech experts”.

Probably, Tinubu and his team understand internet fraudsters to be individuals who are knowledgeable or well trained in ICT. But nothing can be farther from the truth. Internet fraudsters are what they are, and nothing better. They are criminals and there wouldn’t be any need to use any euphemism to qualify their atrocious escalades.

It is not for the lack of opportunities or the absence of the right operating environment that these individuals take to crime. In America, where we have departments in the Militarily for technological-based operations and which has the most advanced and most supported internet and other computer based technologies, there are still internet criminals and the American law enforcement agencies do not make excuses for them, but ensure that they are made to face the wrath of the law.

Even with our pitiable lack of support for Tech Entrepreneurs in Nigeria, Nigeria has still seen a number of our youth conquer the world through technology. We have Nigerian youths who develop and sell Apps.

Paystack was developed by Nigerian youths; Ezra Olubi and Shola Akinlade, and this App was bought for 200 million Dollars by Stripe. We have numerous other Nigerian youths working in the ICT and making huge amounts of money without resorting to crime.

90% of internet fraudsters whom Bola Tinubu ignorantly  call Tech savvy youths who lack opportunities hence, their resort to crime, are common criminals who are unskilled in the real art of ICT, but use their basic knowledge to defraud unsuspecting victims.

Nothing has given Nigeria a bad image across the world more than the high rate of involvement of Nigerian youths in internet fraud, and it is expected that any responsible leader who truly means well for Nigeria would rather condemn such acts of criminality instead of excusing it.

Promising to turn internet fraudsters to Tech experts is not very different from promising to turn armed robbers to police officers.

APC’s Attack On Obasanjo, Others, Over Support For Obi Exposes Its ‘Democracy’ Deceit, Intolerance – Hon. Ogene

0
Victor Ogene

A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Afam Ogene, has described the torrents of below-the-belt criticisms and attack on the person and character of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and other statesmen, by agents of the ruling party, over their recent public declaration of support for the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as dishonourable, crude exhibition of intolerance of alternative views and disrespect for the elderly, which negate the values of African culture and principles of democracy that thrive on plurality of opinions and freedom of choice.

Ogene contended that in spite of former President Obasanjo’s known or alleged human frailties or shortcomings, the vicious attacks on his person, remain uncharitable and condemnable. He named other elder statesmen equally being trolled by agents of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for similarly endorsing Obi of the Labour Party as Pa Ayo Adebanjo and Chief Edwin Clark.

While Pa Adebanjo is leader of the pan Yoruba group, Afenifere, Clark heads the apex Niger Delta group, PANDEF.

According to Hon. Ogene, such disrespect and wild deployment of denigrating language and sly innuendos against the elders, coming especially from very senior politicians, journalists and media managers, in APC, is symptomatic of their false claims of being adherents of democracy.

On the contrary, he said, their current disposition easily mirrors the deceit, temperament and inner demons of both the marketers and the product being marketed as alleged ‘hero of democracy’ and self acclaimed heir to the throne.’

Ogene, in a statement in Awka, Anambra State, on Sunday, January 8, 2023, said that no reasonable person burns down an invaluable library of leadership experience and knowledge – which the trio of Obasanjo, Adebanjo and Clark represent – on the altar of partisan preference and selfish political ambition, just because the views expressed do not fit into their personal agenda.

He noted that what the elder statesmen did was not necessarily a mere endorsement of Obi, but essentially to point out a direction, which they believe – as elders and leaders – would lead to a better future for the teeming youths of the nation, who without any iota of doubt are desirous of positive change.

Ogene said further in the statement: “In doing that, Obasanjo and the other revered elders have fulfilled two core responsibilities, as political leaders, opinion moulders and elders in an African society: to point to the younger generation the road to travel, as well as avoid sitting on the fence, by not being ambiguous about their position on such a critical national issue.

“Such a virtue, rather than being disparaged in the manner the APC and its agents have done, ought to be applauded and emulated by all.

“It should be noted that Obasanjo as a former Head of State and former President, who, from a humble beginning, reached the pinnacle of his first profession, the military; and the zenith of political power in Nigeria, as elected President, in making his political choice of supporting Obi, is neither in search of wealth, power nor relevance. He has seen it all.

“To him, and the duo of Pa Adebanjo and Clark, at their current ripe old age and unquestionable International recognition and contacts, are eminently qualified to be ascribed the role of ‘moral conscience of the nation.’ Their role, therefore, is to simply point the way forward, while it is entirely up to the Nigerian electorate to make their individual choices. And hopefully, live with whatever choice they make, one way or another.

“After all, a time honoured African proverb proclaims that, what an elder sees, sitting down, may remain illusionary to a younger person, even if he climbs the tallest tree.

“As a matter of fact, those hirelings and their principals who are currently attacking these eminent Nigerians have more than once, sought their endorsement in the quest for higher office.

“The orchestrated media savagery must, thus, be called off now, else Nigerians would be left with no choice but to see the perpetrators for what they truly are: a bunch of desperate power mongers, for whom foul is fair,” Hon. Ogene surmised.

Kwankwaso Rates PDP Better Than APC; Dismisses Obasanjo’s Endorsement of Obi As Inconsequential

0

By Akinwale Kasali

New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Presidential Candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso has dismissed the endorsement of Labour Party Candidate, Peter Obi by former President Olusegun Obasanjo as inconsequential. He also slammed the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the suffering of Nigerians since 1999.

He said that PDP ruled for 16 years and APC has ruled for almost yight years that the suffering of Nigerians has further escalated.

However, he rated PDP better than APC. “PDD is bad. APC is very bad”, he declared.

For record purposes, Kwankwaso was a very high profile member of both parties at one time or the other from 1999 to mid-2022 when he left to found the NNPP.

Kwankwaso spoke during his visit to Asaba, Delta State Capital, as part of his campaign tour of the South-South to canvass for votes ahead of the February 2023 general polls.

The former Kano State Governor boasted that he would defeat Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, at the polls on February 25th, 2023.

Speaking to his supporters  Kwanwkaso said, “I’m happy for the reception given to me in Asaba. The people have accepted me because I have all it takes to deliver this country from the bondage of APC and PDP.

“PDP and APC put together are what we are suffering today. These two parties have failed Nigerians. Let me tell you, PDP is bad, and APC is very bad.

“I was one of the founding fathers of PDP. They failed and we joined hands to form APC, again APC failed. That’s why we moved to NNPP to save this country.

“Poor leadership, lack of capacity, and integrity mostly characterised PDP and APC. They are only interested in themselves and their family.”

On the endorsement of Obi by former Obasanjo, Kwankwaso said it is inconsequential, as he, Kwankwaso, has already been endorsed by the masses.

“You can’t sit anywhere and start endorsing somebody. The Presidency is not based on ethnicity,” he added.

CBN Moves To End Shortage Of New Banknotes

0

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has dismissed reports that the new naira banknotes are in short supply.

Not a few Nigerians have complained of shortage of the new notes as the apex bank deadline for phasing out the old notes draws near. From January 31, 2023 the old notes will no longer be a legal tender, according to.the guidelines sent to commercial banks last November by the apex bank.

While the new notes are not adequately in supply, money exchangers seem to have enough which they sell at parties to customers.

Some commercial banks are believed to be suppliers to these money changers, even when they have refused to load the Automated Teller Machine, ATM with the new notes as the CBN had earlier directed.

This situation must not be allowed to continue, the apex bank said.

It has therefore, directed the banks to stop dispensing the new notes  over -the-counter, rather, the Godwin Emefiele-led CBN said, the new Banknotes must now be loaded on ATM to make them accessible to customers.

Speaking on the issue on Saturday, Osita Nwasinobi said the CBN is concerned about the complaints from Nigerians that the banknotes are in short supply.

To ameliorate the situation, Nwasinobi said banks have been directly immediately to load their ATMs with new notes supplied to them by CBN.

He said, “The CBN is concerned about claims by Nigerians that they had not come in contact with the new notes and therefore, directed the banks to ensure that they load their ATMs with new notes.

“This will ensure quick and wider circulation of the new notes across Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the magazine learnt that some commercial have started loading their ATMs with the new notes.

“The aim is to ensure that the banknotes are well circulated by the time work resume fully next week,” a source in one of the tier one bank said on Saturday.

Formation Of Parallel Body: NBA Suspends NEC Member

0
Nimi Walson Jack

By Ayodele Oni

True to its threat to excommunicate those behind the formation of a parallel body with the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), a member of the national executive council of the association, Nimi Walson Jack, has been suspended.

Walson Jack is a member of NBA NEC by virtue of his being a former general secretary of the body between 2004 and 2006.

The NBA had on 15th December, 2022,  resolved during one of its NEC meetings to suspend those behind the promotion of another parallel body, Law Society of Nigeria, (LSN) with the association.

In addition, the association also stripped him of all privileges accruing to him as a past General Secretary.

Walson-Jack  has however protested his suspension, saying it violated the NBA Constitution and also breached his right to fair hearing.

The body particularly resolved that a Past NBA General Secretary, Nimi Walson-Jack who acted as a solicitor to the promoters of the new law society be stripped of his privileges as past General Secretary and consequently, be suspended from being a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Association.

The meeting equally agreed that the Law Society of Nigeria (LSN), is unknown to members of the Bar and mandated the NBA President to commence processes for the delisting of the LSN by the Corporate Affairs Commission.

The LSN’s emergence last October threatened to end the NBA’s 89-year monopoly.

The other identified promoters of the LSN are Kunle Ogunba (SAN), who is the protem President, Nimi Walson-Jack, Vice President; Abdulqadir Alhaji Sani, Secretary; Olasupo Ojo, Welfare Secretary; and Chioma Ferguson, Treasurer.

Others are Douglas Ogbankwa, Publicity Secretary; Zara Umar Yakubu, Financial Secretary; Alice Ogaku Awonugba, Assistant Secretary; and Hassan Sheriff, Assistant Publicity Secretary.

In a statement he issued on his suspension, Walson-Jack said, “the resolution to punish me for representing the promoters of the new law society is a return to the dark ages of socialism and communism when Governments sanctioned and jailed Lawyers for representing persons whose activities were considered contrary to those of the political leadership.

“This infamous resolution would win a gold medal in the coven of dictators, not in the assembly of Lawyers in defense of Democracy and the Rule of Law.

“It is an affront to the right of Lawyers to represent the diverse interests of their law-abiding clients.

“Both the process and substance of arriving at the resolution to sanction me have shown the NBA as being anti-Rule of Law and earned our previously esteemed Association a place in the hall of infamy of dictators and anti-Rule of Law elements who abound in mushroom organizations across Nigeria and the World.

“NBA-NEC has no power to suspend, expel or remove a statutory member like me unless the Constitution is amended, an exclusive preserve of the Annual General Meeting.

“The leadership of the NBA, by its resolution, breached the Constitution of the NBA, my fundamental right to a fair hearing, and the right of my Clients to Counsel of their choice. The President of the NBA was the accuser, persecutor and Judge.”
