Political Leaders Taking Grace As Entitlement, Says Obi At Berekete Radio Programme

0
Peter Obi

The Presidential  Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr. Peter Obi has declared that democracy makes the ordinary people, the poor and disadvantaged as the owners of the country.

Obi who was a special guest at the Human Rights Radio in Abuja, Berekete Radio, said that the ordinary people have critical role to play in the selection process of who governs this country and they can only do that through their Permanent Voters Card.

The LP flag bearer said that he is seeking to be hired by the owners of Nigeria, the ordinary downtrodden, because he wants to build a new Nigeria where the populace are secured and productive.

Obi who took time to explain to the listeners at home and those in the studio why he is aspiring to be hired for the job of Nigeria President, said that applicants antecedents should be put into consideration while interviewing and taking decisions to employ.

The former Governor of Anambra state who took time to explain his rich past in public and private sectors, said that having done it well in the past he is well equipped to do better being the most qualified of all the candidates.

On his being labeled a stingy man, Obi said it’s not true that what is being seen and talked about his being stingy is his fiscal discipline in the management of public funds and those who lose out in the blockage of waste see it as being stingy.

He used various examples to illustrate his frugality to public funds, pointing out that corrupt people fight back when you block them by tagging you stingy.

According to him, saving money is not in the constitution of Nigeria but my Presidency will change our sharing mentality to saving and production mentality.

On corruption, Obi said that if elected he will draw the line and face the future as he would not close shop to chase thief although he noted that the looters would not be allowed to go free.

He described nepotism as a huge corruption especially when leaders pick unqualified persons who maybe of the same family with him and allocate land and contract papers to them.

Obi disagreed with a questioner that when people enter office like President or Governor the office change them, instead he said that money and power expose who the person really are.

The candidate said that North is the new Nigeria gold and oil but requires only a person who knows like him and his Vice to unlock it.

“The poverty in the country can only be tackled through production and it’s only through it crimes and criminalities can be reduced. Those bandits are factory workers who are doing nothing.

On  his position on Biafra, whether he has plans of restoring it if elected, Obi declared unequivocally that the Biafra war ended 52 years ago and that is the position. I am a Nigerian and running for President as a Nigerian.

“If the President is to be given by whose turn it is, as an Igbo, it’s my turn but I am in the race as a Nigerian wishing to be hired based on my track record, competence and capacity.”

He regretted that Nigerian leaders have not shown enough compassion on the people and their plights in neglecting the people they govern. They are annoying God by turning grace into entitlement.

The high points of the two hour question and answer programme was the offsetting of the lost money of over N400, 000 belonging to a banana seller whose phone was stolen and all contribution funds in her account withdrawn by the Labour Party although the Candidate urged the radio station to do further investigation as the bank might be liable if the customer did not sign to internet banking.

The station announced that over two million viewers and listeners liked the program and none of the over 300 comments were negative, although Obi insisted on hearing the  bad comments as he learns from it.

There Are Noticeable Threats To Next Month’s General Election – INEC Chairman

0

By Ayodele Oni

Despite assurances by security agencies of adequate protection before and during general elections scheduled to begin next month, Chairman, National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, said the elections face serious threat of cancellation should the insecurity across the country continues.

Yakubu, cautioned that there may likely be constitutional crisis in a situation whereby elections are cancelled or postponed due to the prevailing security situation.

The INEC boss represented by the Chairman, Board of Electoral Institute (BEI), Abdullahi Abdu Zuru,  made the remarks on Monday in Abuja at the validation of election security training resources.

He however assured that the commission is not leaving anything to chance in ensuring that intensive and extensive security is provided for election personnel, materials and processes.

“We all appreciate the fact that Election Security is vital to democratic consolidation through provision of enabling environment for the conduct of free, fair, credible and inclusive elections and thus strengthening the electoral process.

“Consequently, in preparations for the 2023 general elections, the commission is not leaving anything to chance in ensuring that intensive and extensive security are provided for election personnel, materials and processes.

“This is particularly significant to the commission given the current insecurity challenges in various parts the country and the fact that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members constitute the core of the Polling Unit Election officials.

“Moreover, if the insecurity is not monitored and dealt with decisively, it could ultimately culminate in the cancellation and/or postponement of elections in sufficient constituencies to hinder declaration of elections results and precipitate constitutional crisis.

“This must not be allowed to happen and shall not be allowed to happen.

“Therefore, security personnel in particular and all election officials in general must be security conscious and alert to unusual activities in their environment and must be fully equipped to deal with any challenge at all times.

“To this end, the National Security Adviser, Gen. Mohammed Babagana Monguno, and the Chairman, INEC have jointly assured the nation that conducive environment will be provided for successful conduct of the 2023 general Election.

“Similarly, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has conducted Election Security Management Workshops across the Six Geopolitical Zones.

“On its part, the commission, through The Electoral Institute, has institutionalized the development and implementation of a cascaded training mechanism for security personnel as a critical component of its training plan.

“We are also aware that there is a new Electoral Legal Framework that will guide the 2023 as a result of the enactment of the Electoral Act 2022 which prompted the review of the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Conduct of Elections 2022.

“In particular, Sections 47(2), 60(1, 2 & 5), 62(1), 64(4a & 4b) and 64(5) of the Electoral Act 2022, which confers INEC with the power to use any technological device to transmit or transfer election results electronically are instructive in this regard.

“Emboldened by these legal protections, the commission introduced new innovative technologies and procedures and made commitments to the Nigeria People.

“Part of the commitments are that Continuous Verification, Accreditation and Voting will be conducted at the Polling Units using the Bimodal Verification and Accreditation System (BVAS).

“Real-Time Polling Unit-level results will be uploaded on to the INEC Results Viewing (IReV) Portal using the same BVAS.

“These commitments require innovative security strategies and deployments for protection of voters, election personnel, materials, equipment, the electoral processes as well as the general public.”

Kano: DSS Boss Wife Stops NNPP Gov Candidate From Boarding Flight, Orders His Arrest

Yusuf Magaji Bichi - DSS DG

Aisha Bichi, the wife of the Director General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi caused quite a scare at the Kano airport on Sunday after harassing and preventing the NNPP governorship candidate, Abba Yusuf from boarding a flight to Abuja, the nation’s capital, according to Daily Nigeria.

The DSS boss’s wife also reportedly barred Yusuf from boarding a Air Peace flight from Kano to Abuja yesterday.

The crisis, according to the newspaper began at the gate of the VIP lounge of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano when the motorcade of the politician caused traffic holdup, briefly delaying Mrs Bichi’s convoy from gaining swift passage into the controlled area.

Sources said the situation angered Mrs Bichi as her security guards started beating up people and hitting vehicles for “disrespecting Madam”.

Witnesses said as the dust began to settle, the NNPP candidate went into the lounge to meet her, being his wife’s friend, and complain about the personel’s untoward behaviour.

“No sooner had Abba approached her than she began raining insults on him. Although the state director of service attempted to calm her down, she continued pouring the expletives, saying she would not allow him to be a governor,” an eyewitness told this newspaper.

The situation worsened when Aisha sighted a member of the politician’s entourage, Garba Kilo, filming the altercation with his phone. “As she saw Kilo taking a video, she immediately ordered the personnel to kill him, saying ‘kill him, and nothing will happen’.

“She further vowed that she would not allow Abba to board same flight with her tonight. As she continued shouting, the state director of DSS pleaded with Abba to cancel his trip and go back home.

“As Abba insisted on boarding the flight, a reinforcement of DSS personnel shortly arrived at the airport and cordoned off the lounge building. Some hefty-looking operatives then stormed into the lounge and told Abba that he was under arrest,” said the source.

Sources further told Daily Nigerian that the police DPO in charge of the airport later arrived in company of his subordinates to investigate the incident and take statements from the parties involved in the clash.

“After Abba gave a statement, the DPO went to the left wing of the lounge to take her statement, but she declined, asking ‘do you know who I am? Who are you to even confront me to write a statement?

“The DPO later eft without taking her statement,” said the source.
Daily Nigerian learnt that the SSS operatives later released Mr Yusuf after the flight took off with the DG’s wife.

Spokesman for the SSS, Peter Afunanya, did not respond to inquiry on the matter at the time of filing this report, just as spokesman for the NNPP candidate, Sanusi Dawakintofa, could not be reached for comment on the matter.

Mrs Bichi, believed by insiders to be meddling with the service affairs, had recently ordered SSS operatives to beat up her tailor in Abuja for failure to sew her cloths on time.

She had also ordered the removal of the service director at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja for allegedly refusing to welcome her last year.

NIMASA DG Harps On Standardized Digital Communication For Effective Port, Flag Administration

0

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA Dr Bashir Jamoh, OFR, says international collaboration to attain standardized digitalization is essential for Maritime Administrations across the world and all stakeholders in the maritime sector to effectively communicate in line with provisions of the International Maritime Organization IMO, and the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities, IALA.

Dr Jamoh who stated this while speaking at the launch of Denmark’s first commercial satellite, Sternula-1, in Aalborg, Denmark noted that NIMASA is participating in the testing stage of an international satellite system that would improve communication channels for vessels at sea as part of the current Management’s quest to ensure adoption of global best practices in the Nigerian maritime sector.

He noted that the IMO set the requirements for the e-Navigation strategy implementation plan while, IALA develops the technical solutions such as AIS as part of measures to ease and promote digital communication in the Maritime Industry.

According to him, “Ultimately, seaborne transport depends on a secure and trustworthy flow of information. In this new reality, access to quality data is essential for ship managers to make decisions, act on market opportunities, and meet new requirements. A well digitalized system leads to faster access to information, improved customer experience, increased productivity, lower operational costs, improved decision making, improved information security, higher mobility, and automation of business processes amongst others”.

In the Port Sector, Jamoh noted that Digitalization is the foundation of Smart Ports and Digital Twins, both technological tools and solutions that can transform real-time data into accurate and more precise business decisions, rendering port operations extremely effective as it interconnects all sectors of the maritime supply chain.

Noting that digitalization transforms organizations from reactive to being proactive in areas such as safety and safety reporting, the NIMASA DG said that there are massive untapped potentials for the shipping industry to improve its operational efficiency through harnessing ship-to shore data flows that can positively impact commercial, environmental and safety performance reporting processes.

Recall that NIMASA, in the third quarter of 2022, had signed a Letter-of-Intent with the Danish telecoms company Sternula, on participation in the Worldwide AIS 2.0 Demo Project that will allow for early testing of digital services over the satellite-based AIS 2.0 at the beginning of 2023. Sternula-1 and the built-in AIS 2.0 technology, also called VDES, is a new communication solution to implementing a global e-Navigation strategy. AIS 2.0 is an extension to AIS, adding two-way data channels over VHF by using special satellite channels which means that every ship with a VHF antenna will be able to communicate globally.
