Nigeria’s Money Is Safer With A ‘Stingy Man Than A Thief ”, Obi Declares In Asaba

The Labour Party Presidential train arrived Delta state on Monday with the Presidential candidate, Peter Obi declaring that Nigeria’s money is safer in the hands of a stingy man who will save and invest it for the future than a thief who will steal and share among family and friends.

Addressing a mammoth crowd of organic supporters in Asaba, Obi said “I know you heard when they said Peter is stingy. I agree, Nigeria does not want people who will steal their money again. We want to use our money for our people”

Obi told the people that “This election is about character and people we can trust. Everybody knows the schools i attended. When I was the governor in Anambra everybody knows what I did, all the works I did. When I left Government, everybody knows where I live , go and verify”

The former Anambra state Governor told the cheering crowd that time has come to retire the old order and take back Nigeria for the future “If you put my age and Datti (my Vice) age and divide it into two, we are in our fifties. The other people if you put their own they are in their seventies. You know that there is a retirement age. PDP chairman is 70 years, APC chairman is 70 years. Labour Party chairman is 52 years old. So it is our turn. We will retire them, we will pay them compensation”

He reiterated his earlier promise that his Government will be one for youths and women if elected  noting that it’s the reason “I told you our average age, not this other people we don’t know their age, we don’t know where they were born, we don’t know which school they attended”

Obi promised to reactivate and make Warri Port to work again, complete the East -West road which they have been building for 24 years.

The Vice Presidential Candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmad who also addressed the crowd said “Do you know how to know who these losers are, they have made promises for 24 years, the other half made promises for 16 years, the other made promises for 8 years, and they all failed”

“They cannot face Peter Obi and myself and talk about security, they will hide behind and talk about structure. The structure that they used to destroy Nigeria and keep us where we are today”

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Comrade Julius Abure said that the country is in comatose state, in trouble and nothing is working  “This is the only opportunity we have to change the narrative of this country.”

“It is not because Peter Obi is running in Labour Party, if I was in PDP and Peter Obi is running in Labour Party , I would have supported him. I am saying so because he has what it takes to change the country.

Obi’s campaign train leaves Delta State for his home State of Anambra On Tuesday.

Peter Obi: The 61-year-old ‘Youngster’ Who Wants To Clean-up Nigeria

By Richard Assheton

The presidential candidate has enjoyed a rapid rise from outsider to election frontrunner. Is his country ready?

In Lagos there is no arguing with traffic. So when crowds backing a smiling, mild-mannered outsider for president brought gridlock to Nigeria’s teeming megacity late last year, it proved that their man had arrived as a force to be reckoned with.

Afrobeats music ringing in their ears, thousands of supporters of Peter Obi filled the streets. Many converged near the Lekki tollgate, where in 2020 soldiers had massacred people protesting against the same corruption and authoritarianism that Obi has now promised to eradicate.

“We are taking back our country,” said Chijioke Chuwunyere, a tech consultant, during the march on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day. “This is a chance to right all the wrongs.”

A few months earlier Obi, 61, had been an unfancied long shot to become the nominee for the main opposition party. Then he ditched the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and took up with the obscure Labour Party, whose previous presidential candidate secured less than 0.1 per cent of the vote in 2019.

Today, weeks away from the world’s first big election of 2023, Obi is arguably the frontrunner. Victory on February 25 would put him in charge of a booming country of 200 million people which is on track to become the planet’s second-largest democracy by 2050.

The reasons for his rapid rise include years of political and economic stagnation, his relative youth, and a suitcase.

Nigeria, everyone agrees, is sick, its long list of ailments enough to make the heart skip. Unemployment stands at 33 per cent. Annual inflation has risen to 21 per cent, with a chronic lack of foreign exchange and hundreds of millions of barrels of oil, Nigeria’s main export, lost this year to theft and inefficiency. Some 92 million Nigerians now live in acute poverty, according to the World Bank, and hundreds leave every day for greener pastures.

Life expectancy in Nigeria is 55, and 60 per cent of the population are under 25. Yet one of Obi’s main rivals, former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, is 76. The other, the former governor of Lagos State and ruling party chairman Bola Tinubu, claims to be 70, but may be far older. Obi, a successful former state governor, has cleared a very low bar to become the candidate of youth, in a country where that advantage could prove transformative.

He has also established himself as the anticorruption candidate, promising to tackle head-on what he calls the “structure of criminality” in Nigerian politics.

Inverting the country’s political culture of “big manism”, he has been photographed carrying his own luggage and proudly claims to possess only one wristwatch.

Without the backing of a major party, and despite a lack of experience in national politics, he leads in several polls, most recently one by the ANAP Foundation, a Nigerian organisation, which on December 21 found that 23 per cent of voters plan to vote for him. In second place was Tinubu, of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), on 13 per cent and Abubakar, of the opposition PDP was third on 10 per cent.

On January 1, Obi secured the endorsement of Olusegun Obasanjo, 85, a towering figure in Nigerian politics who was head of state in the 1970s during military rule and then president from 1999 to 2007. Obasanjo, whose preferred candidates have won three of the last four elections, noted that “the vigour, energy, agility, dynamism and outreach that the job of leadership of Nigeria requires at the very top may not be provided as a septuagenarian or older”.

Obi has two deep wells of support: young people, many of whom are cheering him on on social media, declaring themselves his #Obidients; and his own Igbo ethnic group, which largely has been shut out of politics at the highest level.

He also has broad appeal, winning over market traders, taxi drivers and high-flying businesspeople beyond those constituencies, even in the majority-Muslim north. In polite society in Lagos, professionals jaded by years of disappointment mutter approvingly of his modest habits and straight talking. One political source claimed to have been told by several staff members at the APC that they would vote for Obi.

His manifesto includes plans to refocus the military from fighting insurgencies to external threats instead. He also intends to introduce an hourly national minimum wage, support export entrepreneurs and save costs by merging government agencies. But much of it reads more like a wishlist than a programme of action. “On policy, Atiku’s is better than Obi’s and better than Tinubu’s,” said Ayisha Osori, of the Open Society Foundation, who nonetheless hopes Obi will win.

It is the style, rather than the content, of what Obi is offering that seems to resonate.

His calm delivery and affable manner set him apart in a nation used to rabble-rousing speeches. A source who attended a meeting he recently held in London said they had never seen such political excitement as in that room. Obi will be back in the capital for an event at Chatham House on January 16, a testimony to the influence of Nigerian expatriates, who do not have a vote in the election.

Obi is also helped by his opponents: he is up against two ageing political veterans shadowed by suggestions of entitlement and serious corruption accusations. Tinubu, who amassed vast wealth as the so-called “godfather of Lagos” and has said it is his “turn” to be president, is visibly unwell and recently released a video of himself on an exercise bike to prove he is fit for office. In July he settled a $42 million claim by Nigeria’s anticorruption agency over tax fraud and evasion. He also paid out $460,000 to the US in the 1990s, which accused him of laundering the proceeds of heroin trafficking.

Abubakar, who lost to the current president, Muhammadu Buhari, 80, in 2019, has denied multiple corruption allegations, including a claim by US senators that his American wife helped to transport more than $40 million “suspect funds” into the US, and a claim by Nigerian senators that in 2007 he diverted more than $100 million of public money to his own business interests.

Not that Obi’s record is squeaky clean. Financial records published in the Pandora Papers leak suggested that he owned an undeclared offshore company in the British Virgin Islands. His campaign chief, Doyin Okupe, was last month convicted of money laundering in Nigeria, having been charged in 2019 before he started working for Obi.

As a former state governor and Abubakar’s running mate in 2019, neither is Obi the total outsider he implies he is. He has been pulling the strings of his campaign from a suite in the Hilton hotel in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Obi may well lose. More than half of respondents to the ANAP Foundation poll were undecided or declined to share their plans. “That’s a huge margin that shows that really the elections are still in play and nothing has been decided,” Osori said.

Both Obi’s main opponents have much larger political machines and financial resources at their disposal. Vote buying, intimidation and ballot stuffing have all been features of Nigerian elections, and while a new electronic voting system is touted as a potential solution to some fraud, a clean election is unlikely.

Whatever the result, it matters. West Africa has endured a spate of coups under the pressure of a jihadist insurgency that now encompasses much of the region. A functional election in Nigeria followed by clear signs of progress would be a shot in the arm for democracy on the continent. “Nigeria, when it performs well, is a really important anchor state for its region,” said Alex Vines, director of the Africa programme at the Chatham House think tank.

A Nigeria that remains on its current course will continue to lose talented people to the West. “For the United Kingdom the economic challenges of Nigeria have meant a steep increase of skilled migration to the UK,” he said. “There are Nigerians in all walks of life now in the UK.”

Whoever inherits the presidency will take the reins of a country that will be home to 400 million people by the middle of the century, surpassed only by India and China. For that reason, said Vines, “what happens in Nigeria is globally significant”. Osori said: “The Nigerian election should matter, espcecially in the global conversation about the future of democracy.”

Find Courage To Stop Oil Theft In Nigeria, Uzodimma Tells Special Investigations Panel

0
Hope Uzodimma

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Uzodimma has advised members of the Special Investigations Panel on Oil theft/ losses in Nigeria to be courageous in discharging their assignment, describing the place of crude oil in the economy of Nigeria as ‘’the brain of the country.’’

He, then, wondered why the life wire of Nigeria should be left in the hands of few individuals to “open the body and remove the brain.”

The Governor spoke when he received in audience, the Chairman and members of the Special Investigation Panel on Oil Theft/ Losses in Nigeria, on a courtesy visit to him at the Government House Owerri on Monday.

Addressing the Panel members led by their Chairman, Major Gen. Barry T. Ndiomu (rtd), Governor Uzodimma commended the wisdom of the Federal Government in setting up the Panel for the purpose of “reducing the dangerous crime of oil thieves who are determined to cripple the economy of the Nation.”

He said the Nigerian Governor’s Forum and other well-meaning persons had long suggested that a special committee be set-up to unravel the crude oil theft in Nigeria and expressed happiness that the body has eventually been established.

The  Governor expressed joy that in recent times the crude oil production level has increased and expressed confidence over the calibre of members of the committee who he described as “men and women of impeccable pedigree.”

He then charged them to “find the courage to do the work and expose the thieves and even prosecute them.”

Governor  Uzodimma said two factors have contributed to the successes of oil theft in the country – internal and external security.  Internally, the said the security appears compromised, not properly mobilized and equipped to fight the malady, while externally, the security needs to be properly coordinated or synergised.

He told the Panel that in Imo State his administration is doing her best, in conjunction with the security agencies, to check oil theft, noting that “the result is that now things are getting better than the situation we met in 2020 when we assumed office.”

To achieve better result in taming oil theft in the country, Governor Uzodimma  recommended that the fight must involve the local communities/vigilantes, the State and Federal Government security agencies.

He assured the Panel of his administration’s support to salvage the Nigerian economy and improve the overall well-being of the people, expressing confidence that members of the panel will do the job assigned to them creditably despite the enormous responsibility that comes with it.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Panel, Major Gen. Barry T. Ndiomu (rtd) said they were in Imo State to “engage and have frank discussion with the Governor on finding lasting solution to oil theft in Nigeria, knowing full well that Imo State is one of the oil producing States badly affected by the menace of oil theft/losses.”

He assured the Governor that going by the seriousness attached to the Committee’s work, the final submission of its report will surely count “and in a very short while the problem will be solved.”

Ndiomu also acknowledged that they equally came to tap from the technological know-how of the Governor which, he said, they hope to apply in their investigation to unravel the problem of pipeline vandalism.

On behalf of the panel, he requested for the Governor’s support as they work to stop oil theft for the benefit of the Nigerian economy and people.

The Chairman noted that his Panel will not be afraid to identify and expose those involved in the dastardly act and promised to work with the Imo State Government to, not only identify, but prosecute the culprits.

He assured that members of the Panel are working towards submitting their report by the end of February 2023.

Deputy Governor of Imo State,  Prof. Placid Njoku, the Secretary to the State Government,  Chief Cosmas Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie,  members of the Imo State Expanded Executive Council and the Service Chiefs in Imo State attended the event.

By Akinwale Kasali

Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, has slammed the Police for allegedly killing two members of the O’dua Peoples Congress, OPC,  during the fracas that ensued between them in Ojota, Lagos, early today.

Taking to his Social Media  the Publisher of Sahara Reporters wrote, “Bloodthirsty Nigeria Police Force reportedly killed two Yoruba Nation agitators at a peaceful rally in Ojota, Lagos today. I totally condemn this unprovoked murder of peaceful demonstrators. ”

But Benjamin Hundeyin, the Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, said contrary to reports that two persons died, that it was only one person that was confirmed dead during the fracas, adding that some of the protesting individuals had attacked the Police.

The OPC members who were also members of self-determination group “Yoruba Nation” gathered at Ojota, Lagos for a rally earlier today, and in the course of this, there was an unrest that led to a fracas between the group and the Police.

However, the OPC Leader, who is also the Aare Onakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, said there were no OPC members at the scene of the incident. And that the OPC had nothing to do with the protest and subsequent riot and loss of life.

By Akinwale Kasali

President Muhammadu Buhari has thrown his weight behind Women, saying there is need for them to be saddled with leadership role for the betterment of the Nation.

The President said this in Yola, Adamawa State, where he urged the electorate to vote massively for the All Progressives Congress, APC,  Governorship candidate in Adamawa State, Aisha Binani, as Nigeria’s First Female Governor in the March 11 Governorship election.

He said her emergence would send a signal to the World about Nigeria’s leadership maturity.

Buhari stressed that although women had participated in Nigeria’s leadership from a distance, it was high time they came close and shared in the Country’s governance.

“The women have been fighting from a distance, let them now come close, and also share in leadership,” Buhari said when he visited the Lamido of Adamawa, Muhammadu Mustapha, at his Palace in Yola.

In a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled ‘Women deserve a chance to rule, vote Senator Aisha Binani as next governor of Adamawa State – President Buhari.’

Voicing his support for Binani, Buhari said, “I came here to make sure that from the end of Nigeria to other places, I want to identify with the candidate, Binani, and other candidates.

“We are here to ensure that Binani becomes the first female elected governor, God willing. Her election will speak to Nigeria and the world through Adamawa State.

“I thank you very much for all the support. I want everyone to support her to win. And for those in opposition to us, I wish them the best of luck.”

The President added, “We will give her our moral support. The women have been fighting from a distance, let them now come close, and also share in leadership.”

In his remark, the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, thanked the President for various interventions in the State.

Fintiri who is seeking re-election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, told the delegation, “I wish you well and all the best in the campaigns.”

Describing Adamawa State as Buhari’s “second home,” he said, “We want to thank you for various and several projects in Adamawa. All our proposals for the state have been approved.”

“We will not get tired of receiving you in the State. We will continue to pray for you. We love you and admire you. You have done well and surpassed what is expected of a leader,” the Governor added.

By Ayodele Oni

Just as cases arising from Primaries of political parties to elect Candidates for next month general elections remain unconcluded in Courts, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Monday released the final list of presidential and National Assembly candidates of all the political parties contesting the February 25 elections.

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidates for Southern senatorial district are still in over the outcome of the primary election won by former deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi. Incumbent Senator Nicholas Tofowomo is challenging the outcome of the election.

Apart from Court cases, state like Edo is still in supremacy battle with camps one loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki and the other to Chief Dan Orbih, the National Vice-Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP).

INEC confirmed the list of candidates who are aligned to Orbih faction of the party as candidates in the National Assembly election.

Both camps have been flexing muscles in a supremacy battle through the courts over over the candidates’ list.

The publication of the final list of candidates for national elections (presidential, senatorial and federal constituencies) was pursuant to section 32(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 8 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2023 General Election.

The publication of the full names and addresses of all nominated candidates followed the conduct of primary election and completion of the nomination exercise by political parties’.

It was also sequel to the display of the personal particulars of all nominated candidates in their constituencies nationwide as provided by section 29(3) of the Electoral Act.

INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Chairman, Voter Education, Festus Okoye, had earlier said validly-nominated candidates had the opportunity to voluntarily withdraw their candidature by notice in writing and personally deliver such notices to the political parties that nominated them for the election.

“Thereafter, political parties substituted such candidates under section 31 of the Electoral Act for which the last day was 15th July 2022 for national elections and 12th August, 2022, for state elections as clearly provided in item 6 of the Commission’s Timetable and Schedule of Activities.

“Thereafter, no withdrawal or substitution of candidates is allowed except in the event of death as provided in section 34(1) of the Electoral Act or pursuant to an order of a Court of competent jurisdiction.”

The list published contains the names of candidates validly nominated for national elections at the close of the parties’ primary elections and the period earmarked for withdrawal and substitution of candidates.

The presidential candidates of PDP, Atiku Abubakar; APC, Bola Tinubu; Labour Party, Peter Obi; and New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, were on the final list.

Similarly on the presidential list were Oluwafemi Adenuga, presidential candidate of Boot Party (BP) and the running mate Turaku Mustapha; Daberechukwu Nwanyanwu, presidential candidate of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and the running mate, Ramalan Abubakar; Dumebi Kachikwu presidential candidate, African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his running mate, Ahmed Mani; Hamsa Almustafa, presidential candidate, Action Aliance (AA) and his running mate, Chukwuka Johnson, among others.

The list published contained the names of Senator Godswill Akpabio from Akwa Ibom state and Senator Peter Nwaobishi of Delta State as well as Bashir Machina, who replaced the senate president, Ahmed Lawan.

Akpabio replaced former retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ekpuudom, while Nwaoboshi, who was convicted for seven years by the Court of appeal in Lagos, is also on the list.

With the latest development, Senate president Ahmed Lawan will not be on the ballot for the first time in 24 years.

Recall that Justice Fadima Aminu of the Federal High Court sitting in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital in September 2022,  affirmed Bashir Machina, as the authentic candidate of the All Progressives Congress for Yobe North Senatorial District.

Reacting to the verdict the following day, the Senate President said he “has accepted the judgment of the court which disqualified his candidature and participation in the election.”

Obi-Datti: “We Will Birth A New Nigeria”; Emotional Datti Weeps Over Father

0

The Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmad have assured Nigerians that if elected by February 25, 2023, the country will see what they have never seen in leadership and governance delivery.

Speaking at a special Town Hall meeting organized by ChannelsTV and their partners yesterday in Abuja, Obi and his Vice said they truly deserve the votes of Nigerians because of the sincerity with which they intend to approach governance to tackle various pressing challenges, especially security.

Fielding questions from select audience drawn from various sectors, as well from members of the public through the social media for two hours, Obi and his running mate clinically attended to all the critical issues at the well attended Town Hall meeting anchored by TV Journalist, Seun Okinbaloye at the Nigeria Airforce Event Center in Abuja.

On security, Obi said that the recurring security challenges in the country is a cumulative effect of long time leadership failure in the country that he and his Vice are in the race to correct.

They said that the insecurity in the land is the highest of many wrongs in the country which they are aspiring to start turning around, noting that, “interestingly, everybody wants a new Nigeria”

On how their government intend to tackle the various agitations across the country including Boko Haram and the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Obi said they will negotiate with everyone of them including those already convicted, hear from them before acting as one government in charge of affairs.

He explained that he will negotiate with the agitators because a lot of them are products of injustice and glaring marginalization which his regime tends to address.

Obi also addressed the issue of how his Presidency plans to cope with an opposition parliament which he said will not be a problem because everybody including the parliamentarians desire good governance which will result in securing the country.

“Nobody is save. They are kidnapping everybody now including Senators and the governors are running halter skelter, it remains to kidnap the President” he said jokingly to drive home his point of how widespread the security challenges have  been.

On the vexed issue of power, Obi refused to agree with the questioner that the sector has been stubborn rather he said those attending to it have been doing the wrong thing.

He said that if elected he and Datti his Vice will declare war on power and achieve their desire because what is involved is no rocket science.

Obi also said that his administration does not intend to cancel contracts on power that are genuine.

The duo also addressed the issue of subsidy removal and described it as organized crime that must go immediately they enter office, saying that the claim of petrol consumption volume in the country has been inflated.

On how their administration intend to tackle the issue of kidnapping that has become incessant and widespread, Obi said he intends to use the model he applied when he was Governor of Anambra state, involving the communities and setting up various policing system from community through to Local Government, State and Federal.

“When you involve the people including the royal fathers you achieve results in securing communities”

The former Anambra state Governor also fielded questions on climate change which he said he will follow all global protocols on climate change and where there is problem they sit down and discuss it.

On the abuse of procurements in public service, particularly in the defense sector, they said that under their watch, there will be no discriminatory procurement arrangement for any sector as they intend to plug the holes of every fund in the system through a tight financial regime in all sectors.

The duo also described as unacceptable the recurring poor funding of critical sectors like Health and Education and promised to drastically improve on it as they see education as investment not just social.

Obi noted that his Vice has made a success in Education owning two Universities, noting that his will not be operating while public universities are shut down.

In an answer to a question on poor welfare package of uniform operatives who die while serving the country, Obi promised that it would not happen under his watch, “leadership must show them compassion for the risk they take for the country”

Obi who said that he spent his last Christmas and New year festivities at IDP camps in Benue state and Abuja, lamented their poor conditions and declared that, “we cannot claim to be a country if any Nigerian is in the camp rather than their homes.

The LP Presidential candidate and his Vice also answered questions on Women, youths and the physically challenged and they promised to change the system positively.

Obi recalled his time in Anambra state when women occupied all strategic positions because he found them more competent and less corrupt while apologizing to the men for the frank remarks.

The LP Vice Presidential candidate said that Nigerians will feel the announcement effect of their victory because what will follow will be tsunami in the taking over of the country for rebuilding.

The emotional side of the two hour town hall meeting was when the Vice Presidential candidate broke down in tears while recalling  the abuse on his family, particularly his father who died about 35 years ago, because he brought himself out to serve. He had to excuse himself out of the studio for about 5 minutes.

Political Leaders Taking Grace As Entitlement, Says Obi At Berekete Radio Programme

0
Peter Obi

The Presidential  Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr. Peter Obi has declared that democracy makes the ordinary people, the poor and disadvantaged as the owners of the country.

Obi who was a special guest at the Human Rights Radio in Abuja, Berekete Radio, said that the ordinary people have critical role to play in the selection process of who governs this country and they can only do that through their Permanent Voters Card.

The LP flag bearer said that he is seeking to be hired by the owners of Nigeria, the ordinary downtrodden, because he wants to build a new Nigeria where the populace are secured and productive.

Obi who took time to explain to the listeners at home and those in the studio why he is aspiring to be hired for the job of Nigeria President, said that applicants antecedents should be put into consideration while interviewing and taking decisions to employ.

The former Governor of Anambra state who took time to explain his rich past in public and private sectors, said that having done it well in the past he is well equipped to do better being the most qualified of all the candidates.

On his being labeled a stingy man, Obi said it’s not true that what is being seen and talked about his being stingy is his fiscal discipline in the management of public funds and those who lose out in the blockage of waste see it as being stingy.

He used various examples to illustrate his frugality to public funds, pointing out that corrupt people fight back when you block them by tagging you stingy.

According to him, saving money is not in the constitution of Nigeria but my Presidency will change our sharing mentality to saving and production mentality.

On corruption, Obi said that if elected he will draw the line and face the future as he would not close shop to chase thief although he noted that the looters would not be allowed to go free.

He described nepotism as a huge corruption especially when leaders pick unqualified persons who maybe of the same family with him and allocate land and contract papers to them.

Obi disagreed with a questioner that when people enter office like President or Governor the office change them, instead he said that money and power expose who the person really are.

The candidate said that North is the new Nigeria gold and oil but requires only a person who knows like him and his Vice to unlock it.

“The poverty in the country can only be tackled through production and it’s only through it crimes and criminalities can be reduced. Those bandits are factory workers who are doing nothing.

On  his position on Biafra, whether he has plans of restoring it if elected, Obi declared unequivocally that the Biafra war ended 52 years ago and that is the position. I am a Nigerian and running for President as a Nigerian.

“If the President is to be given by whose turn it is, as an Igbo, it’s my turn but I am in the race as a Nigerian wishing to be hired based on my track record, competence and capacity.”

He regretted that Nigerian leaders have not shown enough compassion on the people and their plights in neglecting the people they govern. They are annoying God by turning grace into entitlement.

The high points of the two hour question and answer programme was the offsetting of the lost money of over N400, 000 belonging to a banana seller whose phone was stolen and all contribution funds in her account withdrawn by the Labour Party although the Candidate urged the radio station to do further investigation as the bank might be liable if the customer did not sign to internet banking.

The station announced that over two million viewers and listeners liked the program and none of the over 300 comments were negative, although Obi insisted on hearing the  bad comments as he learns from it.

There Are Noticeable Threats To Next Month’s General Election – INEC Chairman

0

By Ayodele Oni

Despite assurances by security agencies of adequate protection before and during general elections scheduled to begin next month, Chairman, National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, said the elections face serious threat of cancellation should the insecurity across the country continues.

Yakubu, cautioned that there may likely be constitutional crisis in a situation whereby elections are cancelled or postponed due to the prevailing security situation.

The INEC boss represented by the Chairman, Board of Electoral Institute (BEI), Abdullahi Abdu Zuru,  made the remarks on Monday in Abuja at the validation of election security training resources.

He however assured that the commission is not leaving anything to chance in ensuring that intensive and extensive security is provided for election personnel, materials and processes.

“We all appreciate the fact that Election Security is vital to democratic consolidation through provision of enabling environment for the conduct of free, fair, credible and inclusive elections and thus strengthening the electoral process.

“Consequently, in preparations for the 2023 general elections, the commission is not leaving anything to chance in ensuring that intensive and extensive security are provided for election personnel, materials and processes.

“This is particularly significant to the commission given the current insecurity challenges in various parts the country and the fact that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members constitute the core of the Polling Unit Election officials.

“Moreover, if the insecurity is not monitored and dealt with decisively, it could ultimately culminate in the cancellation and/or postponement of elections in sufficient constituencies to hinder declaration of elections results and precipitate constitutional crisis.

“This must not be allowed to happen and shall not be allowed to happen.

“Therefore, security personnel in particular and all election officials in general must be security conscious and alert to unusual activities in their environment and must be fully equipped to deal with any challenge at all times.

“To this end, the National Security Adviser, Gen. Mohammed Babagana Monguno, and the Chairman, INEC have jointly assured the nation that conducive environment will be provided for successful conduct of the 2023 general Election.

“Similarly, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has conducted Election Security Management Workshops across the Six Geopolitical Zones.

“On its part, the commission, through The Electoral Institute, has institutionalized the development and implementation of a cascaded training mechanism for security personnel as a critical component of its training plan.

“We are also aware that there is a new Electoral Legal Framework that will guide the 2023 as a result of the enactment of the Electoral Act 2022 which prompted the review of the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Conduct of Elections 2022.

“In particular, Sections 47(2), 60(1, 2 & 5), 62(1), 64(4a & 4b) and 64(5) of the Electoral Act 2022, which confers INEC with the power to use any technological device to transmit or transfer election results electronically are instructive in this regard.

“Emboldened by these legal protections, the commission introduced new innovative technologies and procedures and made commitments to the Nigeria People.

“Part of the commitments are that Continuous Verification, Accreditation and Voting will be conducted at the Polling Units using the Bimodal Verification and Accreditation System (BVAS).

“Real-Time Polling Unit-level results will be uploaded on to the INEC Results Viewing (IReV) Portal using the same BVAS.

“These commitments require innovative security strategies and deployments for protection of voters, election personnel, materials, equipment, the electoral processes as well as the general public.”

Kano: DSS Boss Wife Stops NNPP Gov Candidate From Boarding Flight, Orders His Arrest

Yusuf Magaji Bichi - DSS DG

Aisha Bichi, the wife of the Director General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi caused quite a scare at the Kano airport on Sunday after harassing and preventing the NNPP governorship candidate, Abba Yusuf from boarding a flight to Abuja, the nation’s capital, according to Daily Nigeria.

The DSS boss’s wife also reportedly barred Yusuf from boarding a Air Peace flight from Kano to Abuja yesterday.

The crisis, according to the newspaper began at the gate of the VIP lounge of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano when the motorcade of the politician caused traffic holdup, briefly delaying Mrs Bichi’s convoy from gaining swift passage into the controlled area.

Sources said the situation angered Mrs Bichi as her security guards started beating up people and hitting vehicles for “disrespecting Madam”.

Witnesses said as the dust began to settle, the NNPP candidate went into the lounge to meet her, being his wife’s friend, and complain about the personel’s untoward behaviour.

“No sooner had Abba approached her than she began raining insults on him. Although the state director of service attempted to calm her down, she continued pouring the expletives, saying she would not allow him to be a governor,” an eyewitness told this newspaper.

The situation worsened when Aisha sighted a member of the politician’s entourage, Garba Kilo, filming the altercation with his phone. “As she saw Kilo taking a video, she immediately ordered the personnel to kill him, saying ‘kill him, and nothing will happen’.

“She further vowed that she would not allow Abba to board same flight with her tonight. As she continued shouting, the state director of DSS pleaded with Abba to cancel his trip and go back home.

“As Abba insisted on boarding the flight, a reinforcement of DSS personnel shortly arrived at the airport and cordoned off the lounge building. Some hefty-looking operatives then stormed into the lounge and told Abba that he was under arrest,” said the source.

Sources further told Daily Nigerian that the police DPO in charge of the airport later arrived in company of his subordinates to investigate the incident and take statements from the parties involved in the clash.

“After Abba gave a statement, the DPO went to the left wing of the lounge to take her statement, but she declined, asking ‘do you know who I am? Who are you to even confront me to write a statement?

“The DPO later eft without taking her statement,” said the source.
Daily Nigerian learnt that the SSS operatives later released Mr Yusuf after the flight took off with the DG’s wife.

Spokesman for the SSS, Peter Afunanya, did not respond to inquiry on the matter at the time of filing this report, just as spokesman for the NNPP candidate, Sanusi Dawakintofa, could not be reached for comment on the matter.

Mrs Bichi, believed by insiders to be meddling with the service affairs, had recently ordered SSS operatives to beat up her tailor in Abuja for failure to sew her cloths on time.

She had also ordered the removal of the service director at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja for allegedly refusing to welcome her last year.
