PDP Questions Credibility, Quality Of Abia Opposition Coalition Against Gov Otti

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has expressed serious doubt about the abilities of the Senator Orji Uzor Kalu-led Coalition of opposition forces to serve as a credible alternative to the incumbent Governor Alex Otti.

The PDP said Abians will not be swayed by a Coalition formed solely to oppose an incumbent, without a solid foundation rooted in manifest credibility and unassailable quality of candidates on offer.

The Party’s position is coming against the backdrop of the recent  convergence of past political office holders ,under the aegis of Abia State Executive , National and State Legislative Members with the aim of  meaningfully challenging the Governor Otti’s administration in the state come 2027.

The Forum which comprises past Governors, their Deputies National and State Assembly members, members of the State’s Executive Council, and other political appointees between 1999 and 2023 ,at its  emergency meeting on Friday January 9 2023 at the country home of former Governor Theodore Orji , resolved among others things to work assiduously to enthrone an APC administration at all levels in Abia state and Nigeria as a whole.

It equally threatened to initiate a legal challenge seeking to compel Governor Otti to halt the use of his private residence as the official seat of power in the State.

Specifically, the Coalition vowed to oust the Governor Otti-led administration in Abia state in 2027.

But in a statement issued on Sunday January 11,2025 by its  Chairman, Elder Abraham Amah,  and made available to this Magazine, the Abia State PDP insisted that only a coalition built around credible and quality individuals, with impeccable trajectories has the potential to oust the incumbent.

Anything to the contrary, the party insists, is akin to further popularizing the incumbent unsolicitedly.

According to the Abia PDP , the electorate with a strong intuitive sense of leadership and direction are bound to interrogate the quality of candidates to determine whether or not they align with their lived realities and aspirations.

“The Abia State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic party PDP has taken note of the increasing public discourse around the formation of a Coalition aimed at challenging Governor Alex Otti in the 2027 Governorship election.

” While political realignments are a normal feature of democratic competition ,it is important to situate this conversation within the true expectations and political consciousness of the Abia electorate.

“Our considered position is clear. Coalitions by themselves do not determine electoral outcomes. What Abians are truly interested in is not the arithmetic of alliances or the number of political tendencies converging under one banner ,but the identity, credibility, competence and vision of the individuals who will bear the ticket of such a coalition.

“Elections are ultimately contests between people and ideas, not mere platforms or arrangements among elites. The decisive question for voters will be simple and profound: who is the Governorship candidate, and what does he or she represents?

“From a political and philosophical perspective , legitimacy in governance flows from trust, character and the ability to inspire confidence in the future.

“Abians will not be swayed by coalitions constructed solely to oppose an incumbent . They will interrogate the records, values, temperament ,and governing capacity of any challenger presented before them.

“History has repeatedly shown  that a weak or uninspiring candidate , even when backed by a broad alliance , often ends up strengthening the position of the incumbent rather than diminishing it” Amah stated.

According to the PDP, politics operate not only in the realm of structures and strategies, but also in the deeper currents of public mood, symbolism and timing.

The party noted that Abia electorate possess a strong intuitive sense of leadership and direction, and are attentive to whether a candidate understands their lived realities, align with their aspirations ,as well as is morally and intellectually prepared to shoulder the burden of governance.

While calling for the elevation of the discourse beyond coalition-building to the more substantive issue of leadership quality and vision for Abia State, the PDP warned that the future of the state will not be decided by how many parties unite against one man, but whether an alternative leadership can convincingly demonstrate that the state will be better governed under its stewardship.

” Any coalition that fails to produce a candidate who resonates with this consciousness risks remaining an elite project disconnected from popular will”, the PDP added.

Atiku Berates FG Over Abandonment Of BEA, Stranded  Students Abroad

Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in last general elections, Atiku Abubakar has revealed that 1,600 young Nigerians are stranded abroad due to non payment of their education expenses by Federal Government.

The students are studying abroad under the Bilateral Education Agreement, (BEA).

The BEA is a scholarship scheme that began in 1993 and was revitalised in 1999. It allows Nigerian students to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies in various countries through agreements between Nigeria and those nations.

Atiku in a social media post, lamented that the Federal Government has quietly abandoned the scheme, leaving the student to be stranded abroad.

Atiku Write “I have been well briefed on how Nigerian students under the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) have been abandoned abroad.

“However, under the Bola Tinubu administration, the BEA scholarship programme, a bridge between Nigeria and the world, has been quietly discontinued without notice to the parents/wards of the students and without any consideration for their education.

“I am informed that what was initially described as a temporary five-year suspension soon metamorphosed into outright abandonment, leaving about 1,600 young Nigerians stranded abroad with empty pockets and fading hope.

“Their pleas are simple and desperate: pay the stipends owed, now more than $6,000 per student. Yet from the corridors of power came a cold, technocratic explanation: scarce public funds must be managed ‘responsibly,’ and money meant to keep these students alive abroad should instead be redirected home.

“In that reasoning, the humans behind the figures dissolved into abstractions, and duty was sacrificed on the altar of convenience.

“The cruelty of the moment was sharpened by timing and tone. After months of cries from students and parents over unpaid allowances, the authorities announced the suspension with a levity that stunned those already on the brink.

“Between September and December 2023, the students were not paid, and in 2024, stipends were slashed by 56 per cent, from $500 to $220 a month, before stopping altogether. There was no payment throughout the whole of 2025.

“I gathered that hunger, rent arrears, and shame have become the daily companions of the beneficiary students.

“In Morocco, one student did not survive the ordeal, dying in November last year and turning quiet suffering into public grief.

“Parents and scholars poured into the streets of Abuja, protesting before the Ministries of Education and Finance, their placards heavy with sorrow and rage, their questions unanswered.

“Then came the final wound: defiance dressed as policy. In a press statement, the minister declared that any student ‘fed up’ could be financed to return home, as though abandoning years of study and shattered dreams were a minor administrative detail.

“To anxious parents, it sounded like expulsion by neglect, Nigeria casting off its brightest children and leaving them to become objects of pity among peers from African countries that honour their obligations.

“The BEA scheme was never a charity; it was a diplomatic agreement rooted in shared progress, revitalised in 1999 to build Nigeria’s future workforce through partnerships with nations such as China, Russia, Morocco, and Hungary.

“Today, that pact lies broken, and across distant campuses, Nigerian scholars wait, not just for stipends, but for a sign that their country still remembers them.”

Ondo State Police Command, in its war against cultism, has burst an initiation ceremony of a suspected cult group, leading to the arrest of 25 suspects.

The incident happened at the weekend at Uso in Owo local government area of the state.

The planned initiation ceremony attracted members from neighbouring states of Ondo, Osun, Lagos and Edo.

The command spokesman, Abayomi Jimoh, in a statement on Sunday, revealed that “On Thursday, 8th January, 2026, the Command received credible intelligence from a concerned citizen that members of the Neo Black Movement (NBM) cult group were planning to initiate new members at Uso.

“Acting swiftly on the information, operatives of the Command were mobilized and deployed using intelligence-led tactics to disrupt the planned initiation.

“The operation resulted in the arrest of twenty-five (25) suspects, drawn from Ondo State, Osun state, Lagos state and Edo State, at the scene of the initiation.

“During the operation, one Toyota Highlander SUV and one unregistered Daylong motorcycle were recovered from the suspects.

“The arrested suspects are currently in police custody and have confessed to their involvement in cult-related activities. They will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigation.

“Consequently, the Commissioner advises youths to shun all forms of cultism, emphasizing that there is no gain in engaging in such acts, as they only lead to grave consequences.”

Allow State-Owned Security Corps Access To Weapons – CD

Campaign for Democracy - CD

By Ayodele Oni

National President, of the Campaign for Democracy (CD), Ifeanyi Odili, has urged the Federal Government to urgently review and amend the Nigerian Firearms Act of 1990, granting states the autonomy to protect their citizens from the scourge of banditry and terrorism.

He was of the view that the review has become imperative in the face of escalating insecurity in the country, which seems to have overwhelmed security agents.

In a statement in Akure, Ondo state, Odili stated that “The Campaign for Democracy (CD) is compelled to express its utter dismay and consternation at the Federal Government’s obstinate refusal to grant state governments access to sophisticated weapons for local security.

“The Nigerian Firearms Act of 1990, a relic of a bygone era, prohibits state governments from possessing high-calibre automatic weapons like AK-47s, with licensing authority resting solely with the President.

“This antiquated law has been rendered obsolete by the current security challenges facing our nation.

“We demand answers: who issued licenses for AK-47s used by bandits to terrorize innocent Nigerians?

“If not the Federal Government, the President should forthwith allow states to equip their security forces with such weapons.

“It is unconscionable, indescribable that the same weapons banned for states are used to perpetrate violence and mayhem against law-abiding citizens.

“This glaring anomaly underscores the Federal Government’s callous disregard for human life and its prioritization of bandits over citizens.

“The President’s failure to secure Nigeria is a blatant breach of his oath of office, which explicitly mandates him to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

“His inability to do so has emboldened bandits and terrorists, leaving states defenseless against these scourges. We hold the President accountable for this failure and demand immediate action.

“We urge the Federal Government to urgently review and amend the Nigerian Firearms Act of 1990, granting states the autonomy to protect their citizens from the scourge of banditry and terrorism.

“The monopoly on sophisticated weapons must end. States should be empowered to combat bandits head-on, without the hindrance of bureaucratic red tape.

“The President must act now. Allow states to procure sophisticated firearms and issue End-User Certificates. It’s time to prioritize citizens’ safety over the interests of a few.

“We will not be silenced by the deafening silence of the Federal Government. We will not be deterred by the lack of action. We will continue to demand accountability and action.

“To the Nigerian people, we say: enough is enough! It’s time to take back our country. It’s time to demand accountability from our leaders. Join us in this fight for a safer, more secure Nigeria.”

Edo: Ekpoma Residents Protest Incessant Kidnappings

By Ayodele Oni

Edo State Government has reacted to a protest in Ekpoma, headquarters of Esan West local government on Saturday over continued kidnappings in the community.

Residents of Ekpoma, had staged a protest against the spate of kidnappings in the community.

Ekpoma has, in recent times, witnessed repeated attacks by kidnappers, with residents being abducted from their homes, triggering fear and anger across the town.

The protest disrupted commercial activities, as students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, also joined the demonstration.

In their anger, the protesters pulled down campaign billboards mounted in the university town ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, dismissed reports of worsening insecurity in Ekpoma, saying the state Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, was already in the town.

Ikoedem disclosed that nine persons abducted on Friday were rescued unhurt following the deployment of the Eagle Combat Drone Unit to nearby forests, in collaboration with local hunters.

“In the heat of the rescue operation, the kidnappers’ camp was located through real-time aerial intelligence.

“The ground troops stormed the camp, forcing the kidnappers to flee and abandon two locally fabricated AK-49 rifles.

The state government, in a statement by the commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua  enumerated various Ongoing efforts to address insecurity in the state.

The statement : “The Edo State Government considers it necessary to further clarify issues arising from the recent protest that disrupted vehicular movement in Ekpoma on Saturday, January 10, particularly as it concerns public perception of the state’s security situation.

“While the government recognises the constitutional right of citizens to express concerns, it is important to state and very clearly, that matters of security require calm, coordination and constructive engagement.

“Actions such as blocking roads and disrupting movement, especially in the name of protest, do not aid security operations and may inadvertently expose residents to further risks or be exploited by criminal elements.

“Citizens must resist the urge to be caught in such dangerous tendencies.

“It is on record that since he took office, Governor Monday Okpebholo who understands the concerns of Edo residents has remained responsive to genuine complaints relating to safety.

“However, the government believes that effective security solutions are best achieved through intelligence sharing, community collaboration and sustained engagement with security agencies, not through unstructured actions that undermine public order.

“Governor Okpebholo’s security strategy is built around proactive measures, including the strengthening of the Edo Security Corps, neighbourhood watch initiatives and continuous engagement with community leaders, traditional institutions and sister states.

“These platforms are available for residents to channel security-related concerns, provide useful information and contribute meaningfully to keeping their communities safe.

“It must be emphasised that uncoordinated protests around security matters can distract security agencies from ongoing operations and complicate efforts to address criminal activities.

“The state therefore urges residents to remain law-abiding, calm and supportive of security operatives who continue to work tirelessly to protect lives and property.

“The Edo State Government remains open to dialogue and reassures the people of Ekpoma and the entire state that security strategies are being continuously reviewed and strengthened in line with Governor Okpebholo’s unwavering commitment to making Edo State safer for all.”

Two second half goals from the duo of Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams were all the Super Eagles needed to claim victory over the Desert Foxes of Algeria.

The three-time African Cup of Nations Winner outplayed their North African opponent, dictating the pace of play, and forcing them to defend.

The victory which could be referred to as a revenge, following the Algerians triumph over the Nigerian side at AFCON 2019.

Coach Eric Chelle maintained the team that defeated the Mambas of Mozambique in the Round of 16, as they repeated their brilliant performance in their previous game against the Algerians.

The Algerian never recorded any shot on target, making their worst match in their AFCON history.

From the blast of the start whistle by the Senegalese Referee, Nigeria began attacking like a house on fire, firing from all cylinders.

Entering into the match, the Algerians never conceded a goal, as their Goalkeeper, Luca Zidane, was named the Best Keeper in the Group Stage for not conceding a goal.

All through the first half, the Algerians thwarted all the efforts of the Nigerian team, with Zidane making crucial saves.

Akor also missed a glorious chance to have given Nigeria the lead when he shot wide.

As the second half commenced, in the 47th minute, Osimhen rose above the Algerian defenders to nod home the ball past the Algerian Goalkeeper.

10 minutes later, Osimhen provided an assist for Akor, who dribbled past the Goalkeeper to score the second goal and put the Super Eagles in a pole position.

Osimhen now has four goals, one behind the tournament top scorer, Brahim Diaz of Morocco with five goals.

With this victory, Nigeria will face the Atlas Lion of Morocco in Rabat for their Semi Final encounter on Wednesday.

Gov Otti  Dismisses Orji Kalu, Others As Noisemakers

Orji Uzor Kalu and Alex Otti

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Governor Alex Otti on Saturday January 10, 2026, dismissed the Coalition of Abia State Past Political Office Holders as “a gathering of noise-making empty barrels.” He also called them  a bunch of relevance-seeking political spent-forces who fluffed numerous chances to move the state forward.

This is as the Abia State Governor urged the people to disregard the recent tantrums and gathering of  the Senator Orji Uzor Kalu-led “Forum of Former Abia State Executive, National and State Legislative Members”

He noted that they are failed politicians who had the opportunity of developing the State, but instead chose to serve their selfish interests.

The Source reports that the coalition which includes three past Governors, their Deputies, National and and State Assembly members, State Executive Council members and other political office holders had, on  Friday January 9, 2026 converged on the Umuahia country home of former Governor Theodore Ahamefule Orji, with a reaffirmation of their commitment to the success of the second term ambition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a communique issued by Victor Ike Oye, the coalition of past leaders  expressed their readiness to work towards the victory of the All Progressive Congress APC and its candidates at all levels in Abia state and the country as a whole.

The Forum also expressed serious concern over Governor Otti’s continued use of his private residence in Umuehim Nvosi Isialagwa South local council,as Government House.

The Coalition said it has resolved to mount a legal challenge, seeking to compel the Governor to operate from the state’s seat of power in Umuahia, the capital.

Specifically, while expressing concern over the poor level of governance under Governor Otti, the Forum pledged to ensure the enthronement of an APC-controlled administration in 2027.

“The meeting brought together leaders of experience and conviction including former state Governor Senator Theodore Orji the Minister of state for Labour Dr Nkiru Onyejiocha and a host of others to deliberate on issues affecting Abia state and the nation.

“The engagement also enabled us to critically assess the state of governance in Abia State, exchange candid views and take decisions guided by strictly by the over all best interest of well-meaning Abians” former Governor Kalu further noted.

But reacting to the development, Governor Otti at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church Umuoriehi Headquarters of the Abia North Conference in Umuahia North local council on Saturday described the gathering of the opposition Coalition in the state against him as a failed project.

In a statement from Ukoha Njoku Ukoha his spokesperson, the Abia State Governor insisted that only empty barrels make noise.

“Pastor Uguru earlier made reference to the noise that you may have been hearing in the last few days.

“I want us to just dismiss it as noise. You know that it is always the empty barrels that make the loudest noise.

“As for gathering, as recorded in the Holy Book of Isaiah chapter 54, verse 15 and it’s says “Behold, they will surely gather, but the gathering is not of me. And since it is not of me, what would they do? They will scatter, and they will fall for your sake. That is the Holy Book.

“And like I have always said, some of these people speaking have forgotten what is written in Lamentations chapter 5 ,verse 37 . And it is a big charge .Who are you to speak when the Lord has not spoken?

” So, nobody should worry about that (the Coalition gathering). We don’t even think we should dignify them with responses”, Gov Otti stated.

The Abia State Governor reaffirmed his administration’s resolve not to be distracted from its avowed mission of changing the narrative in the State.

According to him, the so-called opposition Coalition having ruined the State for most part of the last two decades, has shown beyond any reasonable doubt that they are not bothered about the interest of the people of the state.

“I think we should just ignore them and continue to do what we are doing. In everything, they will not talk about the people of the State, but themselves.

“But they are a tiny minority. And God doesn’t make mistake. And also he doesn’t have an unfinished project. So, I don’t want anybody to lose breath or worry about the opposition and their gatherings”, Otti added.

The Source further reports that  the Governor has been having a running battle in the last couple of days with opposition figures, particularly Senator Orji Kalu over the 2027 polls with the climax being the gathering of the coalition on Friday.
