The All Progressives Congress, APC, Candidate, Ibrahim Babajide Obanikoro representing Eti Osa Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives has been defeated alongside, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Candidate, Bankole Wellington popularly known as Banky W by Labour Party, LP, Candidate, Thaddeus Attah.

Babajide, who is a son of former Minister of Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, is the current lawmaker representing the constituency.

INEC Returning Officer, Prof Funmilayo Odukoya, made the declaration on Sunday at the Collation Centre, Lagos State Model Nursery and Primary School, Marwa, Lekki 1.

Earlier, there was pandemonium between the party agents and INEC officers over the authenticity of the result, even before it was declared by the Presiding Officer.

The agents, including those of APC and PDP refused to accept the announced  results unless their complaints were addressed.

Also, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has been re-elected for the sixth consecutive term in the just-concluded 2023 general elections.

According to the official result declared by INEC returning officer, Prof. Virgy Onyene, at the Surulere local government office of INEC on Sunday, Gbajabiamila of the APC won with a wide margin of 19,717 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bosun Jeje of the PDP, who scored 5,121 votes.

Also, the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Benjamin Kalu, has won the election for the seat of Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State.

Reacting to his reelection in a message sent to journalists, Kalu partly said, “This is a moment of happiness. This victory is sweet because it came with a lot of hard work and confrontation between those outside and some forces within the party. But in all of these, God has seen the sincerity of our hearts to serve the people of Bende with transparency, honesty, in the spirit of accountability and His name has been glorified.”

Similarly, the lawmaker representing Ede-North/Ede-South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency of Osun State, Bamidele Salam, has won his reelection bid. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party as well as the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs.

Anambra: Tension in Ogbaru as Labour Leads In House of Reps Election, Result Withheld

0
Victor Ogene

The Labour Party Spokesperson in Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Anambra State, Chinedu Uwolloh, has raised alarm over the inexplicable delay in announcing the result of the House of Representatives election in Ogbaru, Anambra State, which he said Labour was leading convincingly.

Tension has been building in Ogbaru Local Government Area due to the delay in releasing the result of the recently held House of Representatives election, over 48 hours after the conclusion of the election.

Records from the already collated results indicate that the Labour Party is currently leading the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), with over 1,500 votes.

While the LP’s candidate is Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, former House of Representatives member, his closest rival so far is Hon. Arinzechukwu Awogu of APGA, while PDP which is currently trailing in third position is represented by Hon. Chukwuka Onyema, who is the incumbent representative for Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.
Although there are reports of a few polling units where election didn’t hold, the Ogbaru electorate are worried that the genuine reflection of their will, which was displayed at the polls, may be compromised by some desperate powerful individuals who are bent on forcing their self interest on the people.

The Labour Party has therefore called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to do the needful and protect the integrity of the election in Ogbaru, by making sure that the result is not compromised by undemocratic interests.

Lagos: Obi Leads Tinubu With 1600 Votes

0
Peter Obi at Chatham House

The pesidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Obi is curently leading other candidates in Lagos state, according to the official results released by the IndependentNational Electoral Commission, INEC.

Obi is ahead of his close rival Bola Ahmed Tinubu the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Unofficial results had claimed that Tinubu, a former governor of the state was leading with a wide margin.
But the results released by INEC has put a lie to that speculation, even as the electoral umpire has warned election results speculations to desist from announcing results not sanctioned by it.

The Nigerian Police Force, NPF, on Sunday day issued a strong warning to trouble makers from speculating election results bec6 it could lead to public unrest.

The Prof Mahmood Yakubu -led INEC has already released results in 17 out of 20 local governments in the state so far, which clearly showed that Obi is ahead with 1, 686 votes even though Tinubu won more local government areas.

While Tinubu has triumphed in 10 local government areas, polling a total of 447,192 votes so far, Obi is ahead in only seven local governments, but is leading the tally narrowly with 448,878 votes.

The newspaper had reported how Mr Tinubu was narrowly leading the tally after the results had been declared in 12 local government areas.

But with results declared in more local government areas, Obi caught up with him and subsequently overtook him.

The other two front-runners in the election – Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, and Rabiu Kwawanso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP – have yet to win any local government area in the state.

The INEC will resume election collation  in the state this morning after which the final results will be announced.

“The People Will Resist The Subversion Of Their Will; We Will Not Keep Quiet” – Nigeria Labour Congress

0
Joe Ajaero

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has expressed disappointment over the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,  in the Presidential election held on Saturday, 25th February, 2023.

In a strongly-worded statement signed by its National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the NLC said it is shocked at the shoddy handling of the exercise by INEC in the face of the huge resources made available to it, and warned that the people will resist the subversion of their will.

Listing the abnormalities and violence the deliberate disenfranchisement and brazen intimidation of voters, suppression of votes, manipulation of results, snatching of ballot boxes, especially in Rivers and Lagos States, the NLC wondered why neither INEC nor security agencies could stop the bizarre and embarrassing incidents.

It said these could precipitate crisis, likely to subvert democracy, and warned the INEC that it either sabotages and betrays the people or stands with them.

The NLC said it forsees a national crisis if INEC subverts the will of the people.

Said the statement:

“Nigerian citizens have spoken through their votes yesterday (Saturday, February 25). INEC is a repository of their voices and conscience. It must give it free reign and expression!

“Suppressing it will amount to subversion! Subverting it poses a serious danger not only to our democracy but to our nation! The next call belongs to INEC and we await its action. It is it either sabotages our people and betrays the nation, or it stands with the people! Anything short of announcing the result that reflects the true will of the people subverts the nation and will be resisted by the people.”

Following, the full text of the statement titled:

IS INEC SUBVERTING NIGERIA?

“We have had recourse to alert Nigerians earlier yesterday of our observations and reports that reached us from across the nation on the shoddy handling by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of their early Election Day activities. We talked of the dangers it posed to the entire process and its outcomes if nothing was done timely and wondered why that should be so given the huge resources invested in the Commission towards this Election.

“We called for urgent action by the Commission and key national Stakeholders to ensure that we have free, fair and credible elections.

“Unfortunately, the situation rather than getting better got worse as the day went on with heart wrenching reports from across the nation of vile activities of individuals associated with some Parties and utter collusion of INEC officials and Security agencies to compromise the Election and subvert the will of the people.

“Using of thugs in Rivers state and in Lagos to mete out violence and intimidate voters in these states run counter to the tenets and practice of Democracy. The case of the now dishonourable member of the Federal House of Representatives from Rivers State captured on tape calling for the killing of certain people is not only abhorrent but is a recipe for further violence in our Polity.

“The threats as captured of Mc Oluomo of the Parks and Gardens in Lagos state warning certain voters to stay away from the Polling Centres across the State violates decency and negates the principle of democratic engagement.

“The bloodlettings, harassment, Ballot box snatching and wilful destruction of election materials especially in these two states even in the presence of members of the Security agencies and INEC officials cannot be interpreted any other way except that of collusion. It calls for urgent investigation and action to reassure the people of their safety as the election runs its course.

“The inability of INEC to prevent the recurrence in this election of the ills of past elections speaks volume of its ill-preparedness for this election as can be demonstrated in the late arrivals of critical election materials to the Polling Units and the almost deliberate tampering of the BVAS in many Polling Units including the outright refusal of its operatives to upload results from the BVAS to the INEC Servers in total violation of the Rule of the election and INEC’s own election guidelines.

“We are also alarmed of the activities of the Lagos state Resident Election Commissioner (REC) who may never have hidden his inclinations and dispositions to compromise this election in Lagos state before now and who from information received may currently presiding over the cooking of election results contrary to the choice of voters at the various Polling units across the state. If this is true, that may explain why Polling Unit officers were reluctant to transmit the BVAS reports for the Presidential elections to the official INEC Servers.

“This is completely unacceptable and we want INEC to ensure that any cooked result from any REC is not only rejected but the offenders be made to face the full weight of the Law.

“INEC must understand that not uploading the results to its Server expeditiously as expected creates avoidable crisis of confidence and imperils the entire process. We continue to express our deep concerns over the apparent manipulation of results in Lagos and Rivers states and demand that the real results as captured by the BVAS be uploaded without fail.

“We feel embarrassed on the explanation of INEC that materials arrived late in some areas because of the distance between the localities and the storage centres. We know that Polling Units located very close to such centres were also heavily affected by INEC’s tardiness and apparent refusal to make them available as required.

“We demand that INEC investigates the activities of one of its officials in the ICT department who may have been responsible for technically jamming the airwaves making it difficult for BVAS results to be transmitted to the Servers. He was a former Commissioner in Lagos State and his name is Femi Odubuyi.

“It is important to restate that the beauty of democracy is in its participatory transparency which builds a belief amongst the people thus deepens the trust and confidence of the citizenry in its outcomes. When actions that negate these principles are allowed to fester then, this bond that keeps the people cohering is broken and may lead to social anomie.

“A country like ours must deliberately build and cultivate these fine tenets so that all the tears and wears may be repaired encouraging national healing. What we therefore see may be a conscious attempt to undermine our nation and unleash further social crisis on a nation that is already tottering and at the verge of implosion.

“The NLC feels compelled to warn INEC and the Security agencies of the dangers of subverting the sovereign will. They are the umpire in this election and must be seen as above board and acting within the ambits of the Law and its Guidelines.

“The deliberate frustration of the BVAS remains unacceptable and any result outside of what is transmitted or contained in it is not acceptable to Nigerians.

“NLC calls on all Nigerian workers and citizens to be at alert to protect our nation from the hands of those who have foisted the current suffering on us and now clearly wants to subvert our collective will as expressed in this election cycle. It is our civic responsibility to protect democracy and indeed our nation.

“We call on the Military and the Police to ensure the sanctity of the Ballot and protect the lives of the citizenry who they swore to protect with their arms. This is not only their constitutional duties bot also their moral obligations.

“We call on them to live up to this challenge and protect the process as enshrined in our statutes.

“It is on this note that we call on the President of the Federal Republic, His Excellency Muhammed Buhari to rise to the occasion and call the electoral umpire (INEC) to order. The President ought to seize the redemptive power in this situation and demand that INEC returns to the Rule book for election conduct. It is only by doing this that he will reassure Nigerians of his innocence in this unfolding drama.

“A nation at the precipice like ours cannot be stoking fires in its house filled with dry straws. INEC should not be the one that will strike the match. Our worry is that when a peoples will are subverted, they may be forced to take laws into their hands and the stage seem to have been set for such conflagration and all hands should be on deck to avert it. INEC may be doing more harm than SARS to our people if it continues on this present trajectory.

“Once again, we warn that only an outcome that is adjudged by the people to be a full expression of their sovereign will can guarantee acceptance and peace. We must therefore in pursuit of these ensure that INEC stops this collusion and subversion across the country to deliver fair, credible and acceptable outcomes for this election.

“We warn INEC and others not to allow this election to degenerate into a national security crisis. This is avoidable and it is only by allowing the sovereign will prevail that we can guarantee national peace. The belief that it is going to be business as usual should be discountenanced as the tension since after the casting of votes should be enough signal to anybody planning a heist of the vote. It is crucial that INEC samples the pulse of the people out there before embarking on any action. We will surely not keep quiet!

“Nigerian citizens have spoken through their votes yesterday. INEC is a repository of their voices and conscience. It must give it free reign and expression! Suppressing it will amount to subversion! Subverting it poses a serious danger not only to our democracy but to our nation! The next call belongs to INEC and we await its action. It is either it sabotages our people and betrays the nation or it stands with the people! Anything short of announcing the result that reflects the true will of the people subverts the nation and will be resisted by the people.”

APC Campaign Council Flays Inciting Comments By PDP, LP

Tinubu/Shetima Campaign Council has cautioned political parties not to heat the polity as Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) commenced release of results of Saturday’s election.

In a statement signed by Festus Keyamo, Chief spokesman on Sunday, the All Progressive Congress (APC) council noted that remarks being credited to candidates in the presidential race could incite the populace.

The statement reads “Our attention has been drawn to some incendiary comments by spokespersons of the opposition parties, notably the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) regarding the yet-to-be-announced results of the elections that held yesterday.

“Some of them have threatened fire and brimstone if their own version of some concocted results are not announced in a bid to be the judge, jury and executioner in this elections.

“Similarly, to rile up their supporters against the country, they play up some isolated incidents of violence in our strongholds, whereas we have tons of videos of massive electoral malpractices like violence against non-LP supporters, forcing and guiding women and children to thumb-print ballot papers for LP and massive thumb-printing of ballot papers by both PDP and LP supporters in some parts of the country.

“In addition, in one breath one of the spokespersons of the PDP complained about a certain headline in a newspaper about early results, yet in condemning the newspaper, he also makes unfounded claims about the yet-to-be released results.

“On our part, we have decided to be calm to await the official announcement of the results and to pursue any grievance (if any) in a lawful manner.

“But we shall not sit back and allow such unguided comments to gain grounds in order to foist a particular narrative on our citizens and the international community.

“Recall that all parties signed the Peace Accord twice before the eyes of the world. Now is the time to abide by the terms of that accord and show love for country over and above personal ambitions.

“We have all campaigned hard and strong. The Nigerian people have listened to all of us and made their decisions. Now is the time to hear the voices of Nigerians as the results are released and not our own voices.

“The body officially designated to reflect the voices of Nigerians is the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). No Party can bully them by threats to do its own bidding.

“Neither will the APC be cowed into silence by this disgusting antics of the opposition parties.

“We call on the International Observers and friends of Nigeria not to be distracted, but to focus on the process as it unfolds.”
