Lagos: Afenifere Drums Support For LP Governorship Candidate, Rhodes-Vivour, Warns Royal Fathers

By Akinwale Kasali

Afenifere, the Pan-Yoruba Socio-Cultural Organization has urged Lagos electorate to vote enmasse for the Labour Party, LP, Governorship Candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, in the March 11 governorship Election.

It said that the electorate should ignore the threats coming from the All Progressives Congress, APC, and replicate the zeal, determination and doggedness of February 25th Presidential Election that saw the Labour Win Lagos State.

Afenifere Leader in Lagos State, Supo Shonibare, said this at a Press Conference Wednesday, and warned  that there will be consequences for Royal Fathers who choose to be partisan rather than being fathers to all parties.

In his words, “We have been inundated by various posts and some Royal Fathers are complicit in engaging in partisan politics. We must advise our Royal Fathers that the function of Royal Fathers is that they are Fathers to both the Government in power and the Opposition. They are not expected to be partisan.

“There are some posts last week of some Royal Fathers intimidating those who want to vote and compelling them not to vote for Labour Party, I will advise them to retract from taking such an attitude because there will be consequences for Royal Fathers who show partisanship in engaging the polity,” Shonibare said.

He stressed that that Lagos residents should ignore provocative posts on social media, saying that the propagators of such posts want to pitch Yorubas against the Igbos, and cause tribal clash among the two ethnic Groups and its people.

Shonibare noted that some South-Easterners voted for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the APC just the same way some Yorubas opted to vote for Labour Party, LP, Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi in the February 25 presidential poll, stressing that the election is not supposed to be a tribal war but about ideas.

“We implore Lagos residents to ignore provocative posts on social media mainly enabled by agent provocateurs aimed at fanning the embers of disunity among the peace-loving residents and intended to pitch Yorubas against Igbos.

“Igbos voted for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the South-East the same way many Yorubas decided to vote for Mr Peter Obi in Lagos and other states in the South-West. The issue that we are confronting is not a contest between Igbos and Yourubas; it is the contest of ideas, it is a contest of those who think we are at a stage where we need a change in the polity,” he said.

He assured Lagosians that Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, if elected Governor of Lagos State, will form an all-inclusive government that will provide an enabling environment for all  ethnic nationalities.

“The false narrative of Lagos being taken over by Igbos is a false narrative. Mr Gbadebo is a Yoruba man. Lagos is not a no man’s land, it’s a Yoruba territory.

“We assure Lagosians that the government of Rhodes-Vivour will comprise indigenous Lagosians as well as providing and ensuring that all ethnic nationalities are afforded their basic rights to ensure that they contribute to the continued growth of the city of Lagos that is the 5th largest economy in Africa,” he  stated.

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Government is set to establish the State Wealth Fund, which is designed to receive, manage and invest in a diversified portfolio of medium and long term assets for the state and for future generations of indigenes and residents.

The approval for the establishment of the Fund was one of the decisions reached at the meeting of the state executive council, on Wednesday in Ado Ekiti.

Special Adviser to the Governor on media, Olayinka Oyebode in a statement explained that the Council gave an approval for bill on the establishment of the Ekiti State Wealth Fund to be presented to the state House of Assembly for legislative processing and subsequent passage into law.

It will be the first executive bill to be presented to the Assembly this year.

The State Wealth Fund would among other things, build a savings base for the indigenes and residents of the state; provide for investments in the promotion of research and development in modern technologies and innovations.

It will also provide stabilisation support to the State Government in times of economic stress as well as manage other funds and investments for the state.

The Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Mr Akintunde Oyebode explained that the Fund is a clear sign that Ekiti State is not only committed to fiscal discipline by saving for the rainy day, but has also  prioritized investments by committing a portion of the wealth fund to catalysing private investments.

“By sending such an important piece of legislation to the House of Assembly for consideration, Ekiti has again shown its willingness to lead the way on good governance and fiscal responsibility in Nigeria.”

Other decisions by the state council, according to the statement, is an approval for the establishment of the Ekiti State Environmental Protection and Watershed Management Agency at the meeting.

The former State Environmental Protection Agency 2009 was repealed and replaced with  Ekiti State Environmental Protection and Watershed Management Agency Law 2003.

It also approved the presentation of the bill to the state assembly for legislative processing and passage into law.

When it becomes operational, the agency is expected to, among other responsibilities, initiate policies and carry out environmental research and acquisition of relevant environmental technology and report on the state of the environment.

It will also carry out public enlightenment and staff capacity development on sound methods of environmental protection and management, erosion prevention and control, watershed and catchment management.

The meeting also deliberated and approved the appointment of Prince Ogundana Akinwande Moses as the new Onikoyi of Ikoyi-Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of the state.

By the approval, Prince Ogundana of the Iledin ruling house is to succeed the late Onikoyi, Oba Julius Olalere Falaki who passed on August 25, 2022.

NLC Shuts Down Imo State, Imo Airport; Stops Fuel Supply; Government Fights Back

By Adesina Soyooye

The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has shut down Imo State. Affected in the shut-down in the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State. The NLC on March 7,  declared a strike/protest action which it said completely shut-down Imo State.

The shut-down of the Airport, the NLC said, will begin as from 12 midnight, March 8, 2023.

In a notice addressed to the Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, signed by NLC’s General Secretary, National Union of Air Transport Employees, Comrade Ochema Aba, titled “Notice of Total Shutdown of Owerri Airport”, the Union said; “In compliance with the directive of the Nigerian Labour Congress for Total  strike and shut- down of Imo State over the militarisation and brutalisation of Congress Members in Imo State, all Aviation Workers in Owerri Airport have been directed to shut-,down all services at the Airport with effect from 12 midnight, today, 08/03/2023.

“This action shall disable  normal operations at the Airport, especially, with regard to aircraft movement in and out of Owerri.”

How Trouble Began

This magazine was told that trouble began over what the NLC said is the State Government’s interference in  the State NLC election of its Executive Members on Tuesday, March 7, 2023. The State Government, the Union  alleged, was bent on installing the State Chairman of the NLC, a move that was resisted by the Union.

In other to reekectthe current  Chairman, the Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, allegedly, asked his opponent, a staff of the Imo State University  to stand down. But he was unanimously asked by his Union to contest, so it was not an order he could obey without consultations.

On Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, allegedly put a call across to the National President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and told him that the Governor’s choice be upheld. He asked Ajaero, to comply with that, an order Ajaero rejected and told Emelumba that the two contestants would be allowed to participate in the election, so that whoever wins would take up office.

Ajaero, this medium was told, assured the Governor that whoever won, would be a plus for the Governor as both are staff of Imo State Government.

However, as the Convention began, it was disrupted by

alleged Government sponsored agents who attacked the Workers and in the process, injured a number of them. That prompted the NLC to declare a Strike Action.

In a statement on Tuesday entitled Agents Of Imo State Government  Unleash  Mayhem On Nigerian Workers, Ajaero, on behalf of the NLC, declared a strike action in protest.

The statement reads;

“One of the cardinal principles of good governance is the pursuit of the security of the lives and properties of the citizenry from criminal elements. Imo state today however witnessed the unleashing of brigandage and mayhem on hapless workers and citizens unbelievably by agents of the state government. Instead of securing the lives of citizens, the government allowed the use of thugs against its own people.

“NLC in keeping with its democratic culture and practices had instructed its State Councils throughout the federation to prepare for State Delegates’ Conference. Accordingly, officials of the Congress were deployed to various states to act as Returning officers in the elections that are supposed to usher in new leadership in the respective councils in accordance with the statutes governing our operations. This Conference is taking place today Tuesday, the 7th of March everywhere in Nigeria.

“However, the government of Imo State in their usual characteristics sought to influence the outcome of the elections in the State. This meddlesomeness was resisted by the Delegates who refused the unholy offerings and baits to vote for their chosen candidates. The resolve of the Delegates in session did not go down well with the Government and their agents who resorted to the use of violence to beat up delegates and scatter the venue of the Conference.

“When it was obvious to the Government and their goons that their stooges were going to overwhelmingly lose in the elections, thugs who were armed to the teeth descended on the Delegates inflicting various degrees of injuries on them, chasing them away and carting away materials meant for the conduct of the elections that was supposed to be at the heart of the Conference. As if that was not enough, Security agents led by the Police and the so-called State Investigative Bureau invaded the venue and completed the sordid episode.

“It is blood cuddling and inexcusable to mete out this level of violence on workers who gathered peacefully to perform their democratic rights of electing their leaders. Our nation requires great restraint at this time and not this aggressive use of forces of brigandage against the people. Nigerians have suffered enormously and what happened today in Owerri truly deepens the anger of the ordinary citizens and creates more spaces for dangerous eruption in our polity.

“NLC considers this the height of irresponsibility thus unacceptable and falls far below accepted standards of behaviour by individuals who occupy high offices in Nigeria especially the Government of States. It truly does demonstrate the level of decay that has continued to fester in leadership circles in the country. It does also show the level of militarisation that pervades the state from one end to another and we also feel that it may be a serious pointer to the source of the violence in the state which has made the state the epicentre of killings and brigandage in the South East.

“We therefore call on all well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the government of Imo state to mind its business and focus more on rendering good governance to the people and allow us continue setting good examples on how transition of power ought to be. They cannot choose our leaders for us and ought to learn from other Governments the nuances of engagement and not this brazen resort to brute force and bloodletting. It is on record that no Government in any other state has resorted to this level of rascality and depravity in engaging our members in this Conference.

“Perhaps, it is a carry over from the violent habits they have learnt from being Nigerian politicians that has propelled him into this banditry against workers whom he has sworn to protect at inauguration. Exporting his violent understanding of politics into purely workers activities transcends the boundaries of debauchery thus totally abhorrent to modern human societies.

“The NLC holds the Governor and his Government responsible for any loss of life in this wanton display of hooliganism against unarmed Nigerian workers who were going about their lawful business of organising a statutory Delegates’ Conference.

“We call on the Federal Government especially the Security agencies to call the errant Government to order before it turns the state into graveyard for workers and men of decency. His Excellency the President of the Federal Republic must urgently restrain the Government from destroying our hallowed rules of engagement in the Industrial Relations sphere which demands an understanding of the rights and privileges of the Social Partners. The Inspector General of Police must at this time step in to stop the use of his men in unleashing terror on Nigerians which seem to have become the hallmark of the Governor of Imo State.

“If nothing is done to restrain this Governor, we warn that we will not fold our hands and watch the government and its agents destroy our properties, maim the lives of our members and spilling their innocent blood in attempts to intimidate and harass them into doing their bidding. We shall be forced to mobilise our members nation-wide to take action against this violence to avert it from spreading to other parts of the country.

“Consequently, the Imo state government has forced us to withdraw peaceful industrial relations engagement with it starting from tomorrow, Wednesday the 8th day of March, 2023. This is to protect our members and workers in Imo state from further exposure to the violence that has become apparent in the State. Since the safety of workers is no longer guaranteed by the government, it behoves us to protect ourselves by staying at home. This therefore directs all workers in Imo State to proceed on indefinite industrial action.

“Furthermore and sync with our traditions, we announce the establishment of a Caretaker Committee to run the affairs of the Congress in Imo State. Members who start work immediately are as follows:

“Comrade Ofoegbu George Ugochukwu (NASU) – Chairperson

Comrade Nwaigwe Deborah Ngozi (NUPENG) – Vice Chairperson

Comrade Mbakwe Augustine Ibechole (NUEE) – Member

Comrade Chukwude James (AUPCTRE) – Member

Comrade Ugwu Nnabugwu (MHWUN) – Member

Comrade Frank Uchehara (NURTW) – Member

Comrade Anukwuorji Nduka Peter – Secretary

“Once again the Police must immediately investigate this bloodletting today against our members and affiliates in Owerri. This is the only way we would be comforted with the knowledge that the Police is not in cahoots with those who sought to spill the blood of our members today in Imo State. This violence is a contagion and it is the duty of the Security agencies to nip it in the bud before it becomes the spark that sets our nation on fire.

“Nigerian workers are not pawns and should not be turned into cannon fodders by politicians of whatsoever hue and standing. A redress is demanded immediately.”

State Government Reacts

But in a response, the  State Government, in a Press Release, asked Imo Workers to  ignore the call for strike over State NLC’s Election.

The Release titled: Imo Workers Urged To Ignore Call For Strike Over State’s NLC Election reads:

“All public service workers in Imo State have been advised to completely ignore the call for a strike by the National leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on the flimsy and unfounded allegation of interference with the election of its local chapter on Tuesday March 7, 2023.

“The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba said in a statement on Tuesday that “government is not aware of any outstanding dispute between her and the State workers that can warrant such brash and illegal strike call from the NLC national leadership, who are not on the ground in Imo State.”

“Emelumba added that Imo workers should be decerning enough to know that anyone calling them out to an industrial action at this piont of the conclusion of the process for their mass promotion exercise cannot mean well for them.

“Besides,  the government is aware that some of the leaders are trying to use the workers to actualize their veiled political interests.

“Consequently, the government urges public servants not to allow themselves to, wittingly or unwittingly, be used as canon fodder for other people’s political adventure,” the Commissioner maintained.”

NLC’s Second Response

But on Wednesday, March 8th, most Workers obeyed the NLC. And, aside from the Airport which has been shut down, NUPENG in obedience, directed its members to stop the supply of fuel to Imo State. Meaning, there will be no fuel in the State.

In its response  on 8th March, 2023,  the NLC described the Imo State Government as “a serial abuser and violator of rights and privileges of its workers. It listed a number of examples, including the alleged “Continued use of thugs and instruments of violence against Workers in the State as was furthered in the terror of yesterday.”

The full statement reads:

“The present situation in Imo state especially as it concerns reasonable and effective social dialogue has become so toxic that it is almost impossible to engage the government in any decent conversation. Hobbesian state of nature has become prevalent exposing not just workers in the state but institutions and individuals to the most horrendous of scare, fear and violence in their daily activities.

“A State that once prided itself as the Eastern Heartland which provided weekend rendezvous to those looking for relaxation and comfort by the deliberate actions of this government has become heavily terrorised. Citizens’ engagements with the government are almost non-existent while participation in social life is petering to nothing. Moving around the state requires extra caution as a heavy pall of gloom seems to have enveloped the state.

“It is within this context that NLC in continuation of the State wide Industrial action in the State which has already commenced this morning and which was prompted by the brigandage of the state government in conjunction with Security agencies against workers in the state yesterday who assembled peacefully to conduct the State Delegates Conference of the Congress.

“As we had pledged, we cannot fold our hands and watch the state turn into a camp of horror and a ghost state because of the irresponsible actions of some operatives bequeathed with the powers of state. The use of of instruments of state as weapons to terrorise workers and the people cannot be accepted in sane engagements and it is only by the action of responsible organisation like ours and other patriotic individuals that such perfidy could be stopped.

“The government of Imo state has become a serial abuser and violator of the rights and privileges of its workers. It has deliberately turned the State into the most uncomfortable clime for workers in Nigeria. As it stands today, the state has almost made it seem a criminal offence to be a worker. We have taken notice of the previous actions of the government and had warned severally of the implications of their unreasonable actions and had demanded that a new leaf be turned but sadly, these warnings were left unheeded.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we restate below some of the atrocities of the state government against its own workers. They are:

  • 20 months Salary arrears owed to some workers stigmatised as ghost workers
  • Declaration of about 11,000 workers in the state as ghost workers even while they were physically at work and diversion of their salaries.
  • Intimidation and Harassment of Trade Union leaders; a witch hunt carried out in different guises

Continued use of thugs and instrument of violence against workers in the state as was furthered in the terror of yesterday.

Impoundment and illegal diversion of Union dues in the state

  • Declaration of about 10,000 pensioners as ghost Pensioners and refusing to pay them for over 22 Months leading to the death of many.
  • Harassment and intimidation of the entire workforce with constant threats of violence and sack

The Resort to blackmail and falsehood through the Information Commissioner of the state whose infamous role as an attack dog of the administration has not only scuttled reasonable and effective social dialogue but has also brought the state to ridicule.

“Consequently in pursuit of our legitimate strike action to restore sanity to the state’s industrial relations sphere, we wish to advise that:

those travelling to Imo State through the Airport to look for other alternatives those that make use of Petroleum products should make efforts to seek alternatives and, those that use Electricity to seek other options outside the National Grid.

“We are resolved to press home our demands and until these infractions are remedied, we will continue escalating the industrial action till the government is compelled to show reason and restore meaningful and effective dialogue in the state.

“NLC calls on the federal government to use whatsoever may be at its disposal to protect the lives of the citizens and workers in Imo state. The actions and inactions of the state government are capable of turning the state into a ghost state and this must be avoided. The actions of the federal government would go a long way in ensuring that sanity is restored and the people free to participate in social activities without fear and intimidation.

“Enough is Enough!

“Comrade Joe Ajaero, National President, NLC*

But the Imo State Government in response, alleges that Ajaero would destroy the NLC. It accused him of trying to impose a State Chairman with whom he would destabilise the State, an allegation not a few people dismissed as “hogwash”.

The Statement reads:

“Worried by the divisive, combative and autocratic style of the new President of the Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, the Imo State Government has predicted that the Congress may soon disintegrate under his watch except something is urgently done by the workers to save the situation.

“It disclosed that Ajaero has not only enmeshed the new executive into avoidable partisan politics but has a hidden agenda detrimental to the welfare of Nigerian workers.

“Reacting to the allegations by Ajaero that the government meddled in the botched election of the state chapter of NLC, the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba accused him of lying to cover his “dirty role in the sordid affair.”

“Apart from being a pathological liar, available information to government is that it was Ajaero himself that actually disrupted the election because he wanted to impose his stooge on the workers,”  Emelumba submitted.

“According to him, instead of allowing  the normal delegates to cast their votes in accordance with laid down rules, Ajaero suddenly changed the rules at the last minute, which the workers resisted.

“He noted that when it became obvious that Ajaero wanted to impose one George from his local government as the NLC chairman in Imo against the wishes of the majority, the workers rose against the NLC leadership and insisted that the elections will not hold.

“He denied that agents of the government attacked any delegate as alleged by Ajaero, and challenged him to produce any evidence of his claim, insisting that no government official was at the venue of the election.

“it is unfortunate that  a reputable labour union like NLC now has a President that is not only clannish but  impulsive and a liar as well,” Emelumba said.

“He disclosed that the security agents went to the venue to restore law and order when it was obvious that Ajaero had lost control of the situation.

“Emelumba described Ajaero as a divisive leader who, few years ago, had formed a pararrel  United Labour Congress when he lost the presidential election of NLC.

“He said the man was yet to purge himself of such divisive tendencies, hence his decision to impose an unpopular candidate on Imo workers.

“The Commissioner also requested the interrogation of the agenda of Ajaero whose priority he said is to cause division and havoc in the South East.

Said he, “We should really know what this man wants. He is not upbto two  months in office and his focus is to destabilize the states in his home zone. He started with Ebonyi, went to Abia and now causing havoc in his home state of Imo.”

“Emelumba said security report available to Government showed that Ajaero signed an agreement with the said George to make the state ungovernable for Governor Uzodimma.

“To confirm that fact, both Ajaero and George “whom he has illegally installed as caretaker chairman” have asked workers to go on strike for no just cause.

“We don’t have any trade dispute with workers. We are not owing them any salary. We are now working on their promotion. So under which basis will they go on strike?”, he asked.

“The Commissioner urged the workers to completely ignore such calls, saying that Government remains committed to a robust working relationship with labour.”

Nobody knows how long the strike action will last. But not a few people pray it is called off soon, especially, as it is likely to affect the conduct of the State Assembly Election in the State on Saturday, 11th March, 2023.

Benue: Court Sacks LP Running Mate

0

By Ayodele Oni

Four days to the Governorship Election, the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sacked the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Benue State,  Idu Christopher Onyiloyi.

Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo on Wednesday kicked Onyoloyi out of the race and replaced him with Dr Ochechi Godwin Adejor.

The suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1853/2022 has LP, INEC and Onyiloyi as 1st to 3rd defendants respectively.

Delivering judgment in a suit instituted by Adejor, Justice Ekwo held that Onyiloyi, having voluntarily withdrawn as Deputy Governorship Candidate and deposed to an affidavit to that effect, ceased in law to hold the same status.

Justice Ekwo found as facts that Onyiloyi personally wrote the Labour Party to  withdraw his candidacy and gave the withdrawal legal backing with a Court affidavit as evidence.

The Judge invoked sections 221, 222 of the 1999 Constitution and sections 29, 31, 32, 33 and 84 of the Electoral Act 2022 and declared that Labour Party is under obligation to remove Onyiloyi and replace him with Adejor upon voluntarily withdrawal.

Justice Ekwo ordered the LP to immediately forward the name of Dr Ochechi Godwin Adejor, the plaintiff, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for publication as the lawful Deputy Governorship Candidate.

The Court issued an order compelling INEC to publish the name of the plaintiff and another order of perpetual injunction restraining INEC from accepting any name other than that of the plaintiff as the Deputy Governorship Candidate.

Justice Ekwo also issued another order stopping Onyiloyi from further parading himself as the Labour Party’s Deputy Governorship Candidate in Benue, while the Party was restrained from according any recognition to Onyiloyi as its Deputy Governorship Candidate.

Fire Guts Akere Spare Part Market; Security Man Killed Traders Say It’s APC, Rhodes-Vivour Visits, Donates N15m

Akere Spare Parts Market

By Akinwale Kasali

The popular Akere Spare Parts Market in Ajegunle, Apapa Area of Lagos State has been gutted by fire. Goods worth millions of Naira were lost in the inferno.

It was gathered that the fire outbreak started at about 3:28am when all shops were under lock and key.

The fire outbreak escalated and spread beyond control as a major Petroleum Filing Station with a fully loaded 33,000 Liters PMS Tanker was also affected as well as adjoining buildings near the market.

Devastated traders who are counting their losses point accusing fingers at supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

In a viral video, the traders, who are mainly of the Igbo ethnic group, insist it was a deliberate act to punish them for voting Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party on 25th February, 2023. Obi defeated the Candidate of the APC, now the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, in Lagos State.

A 65-year old Security Guard  in the market was, allegedly, shot dead during the fire incident by thugs who came to loot, a source told this medium.

It took the intervention of the Ajegunle Fire Station alongside Sari-Iganmu and Illupeju Fire Crews of the Agency to salvage the situation and put off the fire from affecting other buildings in the area.

According to the Director of Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, Adeseye Margaret, “The fire started around 3:28am and upon arrival by our Fire Rescue Team, it was discovered that rows of shops that traded in auto spare parts were well alight, but our rescue team were able to subdue the fire and salvage the situation.

“However, a male adult body was recovered  by the Tolu Police Division of the Nigerian Police around the scene while the Lagos Neighborhood and Safety Corps and the Red Cross were also in attendance.

“The cause of the fire outbreak is still unknown and it will require investigation to ascertain what happened and also investigation to account for the number of lockup shops and wares that were lost”, he said.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the Fire incident and the death of the security guard, stressing that the body of the deceased have been identified and his corpse  taken to the mortuary.

Hundeyin also added that the deceased was shot dead and not as a result of the fire incident.

He stressed that investigation is ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak.

The Governorship Candidate of the LP, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, on a visit to the Market Wednesday, condoled with the victims of the tragic incident, and donated the sum of  N15m to them.

Obi on Women’s Day: “I Remain Committed to Gender Balance, Broad Inclusion of Women in Governance”

0
Peter Obi in Gombe

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has restated his commitment to a broad inclusion of women in governance, saying that women play very critical roles in nation-building and must be given a fair chance to participate at high levels of administration, governance, and leadership.

Obi made the commitment in his message to mark International Women’s Day 2023. He explained that the International Women’s Day celebration provides the world the opportunity to celebrate the social, economic, and political contributions and achievements of women in society.

He stated that women have continued to excel in many professions, even at global levels. He noted that success in life, governance, and leadership is not gender-specific, but open to all men and women alike. He said that numerous Nigerian women, across the nation, have gained global recognition for their contributions to society.

Obi argued for adequate economic empowerment of women, in form of access to good education, proper health care delivery, and poverty alleviation, which will enable them to contribute more to societal growth and development.

“Regrettably, girl-child school enrollment has remained poor in many parts of the country, with over 60 percent of the out-of-school children in Nigeria being female.

“We must, therefore, ensure greater access to affordable and qualitative education for women in our society, to empower them to live more productive lives and play more meaningful roles in nation-building,” Obi remarked.

He further stated that in a nation like Nigeria which is battling deeply-rooted corrupt practices at different levels of governance, women are more likely to be sincere, fair, and just, in the discharge of their duties as public officeholders.

“Several studies by Transparency International have shown that women are less likely to be corrupt than men when given leadership positions. Higher levels of women’s participation in public offices are associated with lower levels of corruption,” Obi said.

He appreciated all the women who have played different productive roles in the Obidient movement and assured everyone that he would never relent in reclaiming the mandate given to him by the people.

Obi finally congratulated all Nigerian women on the occasion of the 2023 International Women’s Day Celebration and wished them all-around success in life.

Top Presidential Candidates Reject Tinubu’s ‘Flawed’ Victory

0

President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu faces a tough time ahead following the rejection of his victory in the February 25 presidential election by the top three presidential candidates.

Thus, following his declaration as winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, other presidential candidates have rejected the results on the basis that the election was flawed.

Apart from Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Labour Party, LP who rejected the results annunced by INEC, Rabiu Kwakwanso, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, candidate is also contesting the results claiming that the election was rigged.

Tinubu, many insist, understands the problem facing his presidency, the reason why he has assembled a team of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, to defend him when the legal fireworks begins at the courts.

With the NNPP candidate joining other candidates to oppose his victory, not a few insist that the lawyers representing Tinubu will have a lot on their plates at the tribunal down to the Supreme Court which has the final jurisdiction the issue.

A purported congratulatory message to the APC candidate and former governor of Lagos state by Kwakwanso, has somehow reduced the tension in the ruling party after it was accused of stealing victory, the decision of Kwakwanso to join the camp of those opposed to Tinubu’s victory, is no doubt an indication of what to expect before and his swearing in on May 29.

According to a statement by NNPP, debunking the suggestion that he has accepted the result, Kwakwanso said INEC declared Tinubu winner of the keenly contested election even though it is aware that the election was “grossly flawed, contentious and disputed.”

The statement said, “The report that Engineer Kwankwaso congratulated Tinubu was a figment of the fertile imagination of anti-democrats, political hirelings and fifth columnists leveraging the popularity of the party’s presidential flag-bearer.

“The NNPP rejects the outcome of the February 25, 2023 presidential election as it did not reflect the will, wish and mandate of Nigerians, who trooped out to vote but were disappointed by the failure of INEC to conduct a credible and transparent election and fulfill its promise to upload the polling units results to its portals, which would have guaranteed the authenticity of the results and declaration of the winner of the presidential election.

“Sadly, the presidential poll turned out to be a charade as it failed to meet the expectation of Nigerians and the international community. The NNPP was a target of these electoral robbers who want the status quo to remain, in place of the new and better Nigeria the party promised if voted into office.

“It is unthinkable that Kwankwaso would hastily congratulate Asiwaju Tinubu on his questionable mandate, which other candidates also claimed they won and have approached the court to seek redress. All lovers of democracy, due process and rule of law will wait for the determination of the election petitions in court.

“Until the court decides them one way or the other, it will be preposterous for NNPP, that was rigged out in most of its strongholds across the country, to concede defeat and congratulate INEC’s imposed ‘winner’.”

The NNPP said Nigerians have rejected the results considering their mood since Tinubu was declared winner.

On Monday, Tinubu employed 50 lawyers including Wole Olanipekun, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, to defend him at the courts.

Sources close to the governor informed the magazine on Wednesday that Sanwo-Olu’s has directed his aides in charge of the event to ensue that the youths are well taken care of.

Not a few insist that the incumbent re-election bid is threatened by the emergence of new political force that came from obscurity to prominence, he’s now being forced to take desperate measures to ensure that his second term bid is not scuttled by the wind of change blowing across the state.

The suprised loss of the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the February 25 Presidential Election in Lagos State to the Labour Party, LP, further sent fears into the ranks of the party, most especially Governor Sanwo Olu.

Interestingly, the popularity of LP Governorship Candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour continue to grow by the day, sending jitters among the members of the ruling party.

In a desperate move not to lose the Center of Excellence to neither Rhodes-Vivour nor the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governorship Candidate, Olajide Abdulazeez Adediran, Governor Sanwo Olu has also ordered the release of Impounded vehicles by the Lagos Task Force to their respective owners, free of charge.

Though, the Lagos State Government are saying they are doing this due to the cash crunch affecting the nation, not a few Lagos residents opine that this is being done for Governor Sanwo Olu to gain the electorates sympathy and cast their votes for him at the March 11 Gubernatorial Election.

Again, the Governor has set up a Situation Room Call Center where electorates are been called randomly to suggest where they think the State needs to improve and the issues they have with the present Government.

Close watchers of the politics of the state are watching whether these measures will change the tide in favour of the governor on March 11.

Governorship/State Assembly Elections: Labour Party Not In Alliance With Any Political Party

Julius Abure - Labour Party National Chairman

As preparation for Saturday’s Governorship/State House of Assembly elections enter final preparations, the Labour Party says it is leaving nothing to chance in ensuring that their candidates not only participate, but win at the ballot.

The emphasis, it said, became necessary given reports claiming that they have reached an agreement with Obidients and LP supporters to cast their ballots for them in this Saturday’s polls.

But a statement by its National Chairman, Julius Abure, on Tuesday, said:

“We want to state categorically and unequivocally that the national secretariat of LP has not given any instructions for any chapter of the party to liaise or support any candidate except LP candidates in this Saturday’s polls.

“Our members should not only go out and vote, but follow the process to a conclusive end as provided by the Law.

“We encourage millions of the electorate who believe in LP presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi and the philosophy of the party not to be deterred, but troop out en masse and vote for all LP candidates anywhere in the country. The LP is not in any alliance with any political party in the run-up to this Saturday’s polls.”
