Nigeria Secret Service Uncovers Plans To Disrupt Peace

By Ayodele Oni

Nigeria’s secret service, Department of State Security,(DSS) has again disclosed that there are plans by some persons to violently disrupt peace on the country.

This is coming after the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign council claimed that it is aware of underground moves by some politicians to stall the inauguration of the president elect Bola Tinubu come May 29.

Spokesman of the service, Peter Afunanya, in a statement on Saturday, stated that “The Department of State Service (DSS), again, alerts the public of plans to violently disrupt peace in the country.

“The Service hereby warns those desperate to cause a breakdown of law and order to desist from that.

“It would be recalled that the Service had earlier advised political players to abide by the rules of engagement as well as approach the courts for redress, if and where there are suspicions of infractions on extant electoral laws.

“It is evident that some aggrieved politicians are already taking advantage of this legal process.

“This, without doubt, is the beauty of democracy. It is strongly believed that this approach enhances peace and security. All and sundry should cherish it.

“Be that as it may, the DSS will not tolerate a situation where persons and/or groups take laws into their hands and champion anarchy. “Those peddling fake news, hate speech and all forms of false narratives as basis to ignite violence or pit the people against the present or incoming administrations, at the Federal, State and Parliamentary levels, should stop forthwith.

“Those inciting violence have nothing to gain as doing so will not only consume them but also the innocent.

“It is otherwise disturbing to see respected personalities use their platforms to mislead or incite citizens. This, to say the least, does not augur well for peaceful coexistence and general order.

“Therefore, the Service will continue to take necessary measures to checkmate these elements who do not wish the country well.

“This is to ensure that the conducive environment is provided for citizens and residents to pursue their legitimate businesses. A stitch in time, they say, saves nine. Let all be guided.”

Ondo: EFCC Raids PoS Agents Selling Naira Notes At High Rates

EFCC Operatives

By Ayodele Oni

In furtherance of commitment by the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN) to make Nigerians get Naira notes with ease, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Saturday raided some Point of Sales, (POS) operators in Akure, Ondo state.

In what looked like a clamp down on the activities of the PoS operators, not less than 80 centres were raided by officials of the anti  corruption agency.

The PoS operators were suspected  to be buying and selling money to members of the public with higher interest rate.

Officials of the Commission carried out the exercise in Akure, the state capital and its suburbs.

The EFCC officials have been going round Akure South and Akure North Local Government Areas in the state, arresting and forcing PoS operators to disclose the source of the cash used in their businesses as they sell at higher rates to residents.

At the King market square in Akure South and Oba-Ile area in Akure North local government, some POS agents have deserted their stands for fear of being arrested.

Some customers stated that “But it is sad the way at which the PoS vendors exploit residents because they see members of the public as not having another option since banks are not helpful.

“The PoS agents are making too much gains. You can imagine charging 250 naira for each N1,000 transaction.

“The situation is worrisome as a resident of Irese in Ifedore Local Government area of Ondo state, Mr John Ebere lamented, that some PoS vendors in the community are charging N800 on N3,000.

“I pray that the CBN should fulfill its promise of flooding the banks with money so that the public can be rescued from the extortion by the PoS vendors.

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, on Saturday disclosed that his administration has expended huge investment on education in the last six years.

The Governor who described education as one of the cardinal responsibilities of his administration, added that it is a social debt to the people.

Akeredolu spoke at the maiden convocation ceremony of the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa.

This is the first Convocation ceremony since the establishment of the University in 2008.

The Governor, who is a Visitor to the University said his administration at inception was alarmed with the deplorable condition of things in the institution, especially in terms of roads, buildings and other essential facilities connected to a conducive learning environment.

“I am delighted to recall that within our 100 days in office, we facilitated the asphalt overlay of the first phase of the university road network and inaugurated same for use.

“We have also recently approved the construction of a 2.5 kilometre road network for the university which has achieved about 75 percent level of completion.”

Akeredolu stressed that as part of his administration’s intervention, it has released funds for the completion of some major building projects which were abandoned for almost a decade.

Akeredolu specifically lauded former Governor of the State, late Dr. Olusegun Agagu whose special passion, commitment and magnanimity had made the establishment of the university a reality for the benefit of the entire people of Ondo State and the people of the Ondo State Southern Senatorial District in particular.

While congratulating the graduating students and their parents on the occasion, Governor Akeredolu charged the graduands to go out there and project, distil and exhibit the glowing tendencies that they have adopted while in school.

“I expect that by now, you all have the capacity and the emotional intelligence to handle every situation of life.

“There is no doubt in my mind that all of you have the potential to transform our State and indeed our country by putting to use and continuing to develop the training and experiences which you have garnered during your stay in this university.”

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Temi Ologunorisa, explained that a total of 982 graduands from six sets, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 sessions earned the University’s first degrees.

Out of the total, 26 graduands made First Class, 307 had Second Class Upper Division, 488 made Second Class Lower Division, and 161 in Third Class.

The combined Convocation also witnessed conferment of a Postgraduate Degree of Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa) of the University on the Chancellor of the institution and Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Frederick Akinruntan, in recognition of his success stories in the global business environment.

Soludo Woos Anambra Billionaires; Signs MOU For 24hr Power Supply

0

Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has called on Anambra billionaires to Co, even back home and assist the government in developing the state.

Soludo made the comment while signing an agreement with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, as part of his government efforts to improve electricity in the state.

Anambra boasts of many billionaires in the country, in spite of this, Soludo said their investments are outside the state.

He said they must come back home to compliment the effort of government in developing the state.
The governor alongside Julius Emeka, the state’s Commissioner for Public Utilities, signed the Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, with the power firm in Akwa, the state’s capital on Friday.
Emeka Offor, EEDC chief executive officer signed for his company.

“Today, I signed a memorandum of understanding with Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to ensure that power supply in the state is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Soludo said at the event,” Soludo said in a statement signed by his chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime.

Governor Soludo said, “The signing of the MoU took place today at the Anambra State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Awka. Today is a historic day for the people and the state.

“I acknowledge that this signing will completely translate into positive changes, which is critical for the journey towards a liveable and prosperous homeland that cannot be achieved without a continuous supply of power.

“Long before I was sworn in as Governor of Anambra, I recognized the importance of power and deeply considered how it could be achieved in the shortest period for at least three to four major cities in the state What we did today was to consummate that marriage.

“The courtship began over a year ago, and I am overjoyed that the marriage has finally been consummated today. We must all work together to ensure that we have a stable and continuous power supply in Anambra State.

“Anambra is a state of which more than 60 percent of its non-land assets are domiciled outside of the state. If at least 25 percent of the proceeds are returned to Anambra, the state can become what we envision it to be.

“My message to the rest of Anambra’s billionaires and millionaires is that wealth and net worth alone are insufficient. The question is, how much of your wealth and assets are domiciled in the state for Anambra to be the choice of destination to live, work, invest, relax and enjoy.”

Opinion: MC Oluomo Vs Igbo: It’s Not Agbero Logic

0

By Dr. Ugoji Egbujo

Mc Oluomo said it wasn’t him. That he didn’t actually threaten to teach a nice lesson to the ungrateful Igbo who seemed bent on disrupting the order and disrespecting constituted authorities in Lagos. Perhaps, he expected adult non-indigenes to know their limits and what could amount to an abuse of hospitality and misuse of democracy.

It is not agbero logic. In the tutorial video which mischief-makers made go viral on the eve of the governorship elections, gentle MC Oluomo was only teasing one Mama Chukwudi, from whom he routinely bought Indomie and guguru. But political opponents latched on to it and misconstrued it. They said Mr Oluomo was engaging in hate speech and dog whistle politics to help his benevolent Lagos political deities. It wasn’t MC Oluomo. He was only joking and telling Mama Chukwudi to stay in her house if she wouldn’t support the political business of her indomie customer.

So, let nobody malign MC Oluomo whose sun has risen. Oluomo is a renowned philanthropist who cares for common women like the Mama Chukwudis. It wasn’t MC Oluomo. The police in Lagos could have done more but they said they are investigating. That’s okay. So why can’t people be patient and allow the police, who are their friends, to do their job before blaming innocent Oluomo? Is it a sin to rise through the ranks in the motor park?

The police have handed the Oluomo video to their tactical cybercrime unit for in-depth forensic analysis. Why should people rush to conclusions? Is it because Oluomo is an honest and patriotic citizen? They are not even grateful that Mc Oluomo didn’t deny the video and dismiss it as photoshopped. After all didn’t Ganduje say his dollar-in-agbada video was fabricated? Olorun, Nigerians don’t like honest people.

But even if MC Oluomo asked the Igbo in Lagos to sit at home on election day, is that too much? After all, haven’t ndi Igbo become accustomed to sitting at home every Monday in their villages and cities? Are the boys in the southeast who make ndi Igbo sit at home every Monday more important or better trained than MC Oluomo’s staff? Why are the Igbo pretending and calling it xenophobia and voter suppression? Is it because they are in Lagos? After all those boys in the east that decide when and who comes out Mondays, are they not called The Good boys?

This thing is not Mc Oluomo’s fault. It’s the culture of politics in Rivers. How could it have been MC Oluomo? Thinking of it, many say, he hails from Kwara. So, he is not even from southern Nigeria let alone an indigene of Lagos. He lost his father at an early age and worked hard to escape penury. So how can he incite Lagos indigenes against the Igbo when he knows that discrimination once it starts, it loses its ears? How can a man from Kwara teach Lagos indigenes how to unsettle settlers who are beginning to feel at home in Lagos a bit too much? If Oluomo teaches real Lagosians bigotry and hate and how to reclaim their land, wouldn’t they one day rise and seize the motor parks from him and his boys?

So it couldn’t have been Mc Oluomo. He doesn’t hate the Igbo. He buys Indomie religiously from a Mama Chukwdi rather than a Mama Shakirat. He eats indomie, rides exotic cars and trains his children in American schools. Those who live in glass houses and eat pizzas have no business mingling with street urchins and throwing stones. If MC Oluomo hated the Igbo, he could have seized control of the markets too. Or do people think he doesn’t know there is more money in markets than in motor parks? The Oluomo man is a self-made contented and detribalized man. You can even call him a genius.

Otherwise, how did a primary school dropout from Kwara grow to rub shoulders with kings and captains of industry in Lagos? In fact, with the benefit of hindsight, wasn’t it ingenious that he used a sublime mama Chukwudi joke to send a caution to the entire Igbo in Lagos, leaving the police mesmerised?

If only the Igbo had tact. They ought to have understood by now that their main duty in Lagos is to trade, build houses, and pay taxes. After paying taxes, they must leave it to the hosts to decide who rules the land and how the taxes are used. They can’t keep putting their nzogbu nzogbu noses into everything. If they want to vote then they must travel to Owerri or Agulu. That Lagos is a former federal capital seeking special status doesn’t mean every Tom, Dick and Chinedu can arrive in a luxury bus at night and the next morning start rubbing shoulders with the descendants of Oduduwa.

After all, didn’t the Ngwa people in Aba tell other Igbos not to mess around with them on election day in Aba? Why then would anyone pick on a peaceful man like MC Oluomo as if he committed a crime against humanity?

A certain Oba had once warned the Igbo that if they didn’t submit to his political dictation, they risked being thrown into the lagoon. Is anybody talking about him? He didn’t say people would be chased away from the polling booths. He said they would be thrown into a bad place. So which is even better? To use agbero to correct the pomposity of some settlers and keep them and their PVCs away from the polling units or to throw them somewhere? Threats are criminal but let nobody go and say the Oba did anything so that the gods don’t get angry. People in Africa should be behaving as if they were in Norway.

MC Oluomo has said it wasn’t him who provoked the xenophobia against the Igbo. Perhaps people just suspected it would take the existence of an agbero command and control centre for all the thugs in Lagos to understand their duties and act without fail. And gossip about MC Oluomo because he influences motor parks and can summon such obedience and diligence from thugs all over the state. But MC Oluomo can’t hurt a fly. But if he only asked them to stay around their yards and play with their kinsmen while the Yoruba go vote in peace? Is that too bad compared to what the gods did in Obio Akpor, Rivers state? Can’t the Yoruba vote in their land without ndi Igbo coming with their ‘aja okuta mamuomi’ attitude to carp about democracy and constitution and dilute the vote? Imagine the temerity of trying to install a Chinedu over the children of Oduduwa in the name of democracy.

After the events of March 18, some other landlords like Bayo Onanuga threw their own jokes asking if the Igbo got the message they sent through the agberos. What a country!

Suspension: I’m Happy I Voted Against PDP – Anyim; Says He Warned Ayu

0
Anyim Pius Anyim

By Charles Igbo

A former Senate President under the President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, says he had no regrets voting against his Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the last Governorship election.

Anyim, who was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation under the President Goodluck Administration, during the Governorship Election held on March 18, 2023, voted for the Candidate of the rival All Progressives Congress, APC, against the Candidate of his Party.

Two days to the Election, he had shocked not a few people when he gave an inkling that he would vote against his Party. He had told the Press at a Stakeholders meeting organised by Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. Dave Umahi, in Anyim’s Local Government Area, that he would vote for the Candidate of the APC, because he believes in the rotation of the office of the Governor, and that it was the turn of his Zone to produce the Governor.

He said he was not happy that his Party, the PDP, chose a Candidate from Governor Umahi’s Zone after Umahi had stayed for eight years in office.

Two things surprised his listeners. First that Anyim attended what was clearly an APC event. Second, that he attended it with Umahi present. Both men have, for years, not seen eye to eye politically. They had been bitter political enemies since Umahi defected to the APC from the PDP, and waged what was described as a war against his former compatriots in the PDP, especially, Anyim.

True to his words, Anyim voted for the Governorship Candidate of the APC who went ahead to win the election.

Embarrassed that the former Senate President, who is a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, and a former Presidential Aspirant of the Party, could publicly back the APC, the Party, on Wednesday, suspended him and a couple of others, including two former Governors  Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, and Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State for  anti-party activities.

But an unrepentant Anyim, in his response on Friday, said he had no regrets voting for the APC Governorship Candidate in Ebonyi State, and that he was disappointed with the suspension order slammed on him by the Party.

Mocking the Party, Anyim said that instead of its leadership to sit down and analyze how, and why, it performed woefully at the just concluded General elections, it was busy picking soft targets to hit at, while playing deaf to those who destroy the Party everyday. He disclosed that he warned the National Chairman of the Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, over the Governorship Candidate picked by the PDP for Ebonyi State, but was ignored, even after he showed his disappointment by absenting himself from the Presidential Campaign Rally in the State.

Following is the full text of Anyim’s response to his suspension.

RE: PDP REFERS ORTOM TO DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE, SUSPENDS FAYOSE, SHEMA, ANYIM, OTHERS.

“Having watched Mr. Debo Ologunagba read a press statement with the above title, on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, I have the following observations and comments to make:

“1.     The action of the NWC is, to say the least, disappointing.

I thought the concern of the NWC now would be how to undertake a thorough self-examination on why they performed so poorly in the 2023 elections rather than seek to further divide the party by shifting blames.

“2.     It smacks of arrogance for the NWC to put up a bold face instead of showing remorse and being sober for leading the party to such colossal loss in the 2023 general elections, thereby dashing the hopes and expectations of party members and indeed Nigerians.

“3.     It is clear that arising from the leadership style of the NWC, many members, intentionally and proudly, worked against the party including members of the NWC. Therefore, it is a display of innate cowardice for NWC to choose soft targets to suspend and fear those that daily demonize them.

“4.     It is difficult to explain why the NWC is in a hurry to suspend leaders of the party without recourse to fair hearing, without which their action is null and void.

“5.     In the case of Ebonyi State, the NWC imposed a candidate from the sitting Governor’s zone, contrary to the zoning formular in the state. Every effort to let the NWC see reason fell on deaf ears. On the day the party’s presidential rally was held in Ebonyi State, I told Dr. Ayu that I was boycotting the rally because I cannot support the candidate they imposed on Ebonyi State. Dr. Ayu did nothing. He did not care even as I did not attend the Ebonyi rally. The NWC may wish to know that I am proud to have supported the APC Gubernatorial candidate in Ebonyi State to win the election because that conforms to the equitable formular in Ebonyi State. It is therefore my expectation that the NWC should reverse itself in the interest of the party.”

Speculations are, however, strong that Chief Anyim may, eventually, dump the PDP for the APC.

AFCON Qualifiers: Guinea Bissau Claim Historic Win Over Super Eagles In Abuja

0
Super Eagles vs Djurtus of Guinea Bissau

By Akinwale Kasali

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were stunned by the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau as a Mama Balde 23rd minutes strike was all they needed to claim their first ever win against Nigeria.

The vociferous crowd at the Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola Stadium in Abuja were silenced by the visiting Guinea Bissau that remained resolute in defense, frustrating Nigeria’s attacker throughout the 90 minutes.

The Super Eagles started the game on a bright note, creating few clear cut chances but failed to convert them.

A major long pass from Jefferson Encada found Balde who Cooly slotted the ball past oncoming Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho to give them the lead.

The Three Time African Cup Of Nations Champion struggled upfront to get an equalizer which never came.

Guinean Bissau could have doubled the lead before the end of the first half but narrowly missed the begging chance.

In the Second Half, the Super Eagles gave their all but this never paid off.

Paul Onuachu and Moses Simon were introduced in the second half but this never metamorphosed into anything positive as the Guinea Bissau team remain compact in the defense and depended solely on counter attack.

Coach Jose Peseiro of the Super Eagles was forced to remove Wilfred Ndidi for Frank Onyeka, while Levij Akpoguma was forced out with an injury of the head and replaced by Oluwasemilogo Ajayi.

Samuel Chukwueze was a shadow of himself all through the match as his crosses failed to connect the two strikers upfront and fired wide on two occasions, prompting the Coach to substitute him for Ahmed Musa.

Nigeria started the game with Uzoho in goal, Calvin Bassey, Akpoguma, Zaidu Sanusi and Bright Osayi-Samuel were at the heart of the defense, while Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman were the midfielders.

Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho paired upfront, but the Djurtus team were resilient, determined, proactive and ruthless in defense, denying the Super Eagles the needed equalizer.

With this victory, Guinea Bissau top the Group with Seven Points, Nigeria Six Point, Sierra Leone Two and São Tomé and Principe have just a point.

Sierra Leone was forced to a 2-2 draw by São Tomé and Principe to record their second draw in the AFCON 2023 qualifiers.

The Super Eagles will travel to Bissau for the return leg of the double header on Tuesday, March 28th, 2023.

May 29 Hand Over Date Remains Sacrosanct – Presidency

Muhammadu Buhari - Londo Trip

By Ayodele Oni

President Mohammadu Buhari is more than prepared to hand over to the president elect, Bola Tinubu come May 29.

The statement is coming from the presidency against report in some online media to the effect that Buhari will not hand over to his successor.

A statement on Friday signed by Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, stated that “The Presidency wishes to denounce as outrageous and fake, and condemns the fake news brigade for attributing a false quote to President Muhammadu Buhari and circulating it.

“How can you vigorously campaign for somebody, vote for him and then say you won’t hand over to him? This beggars belief.

“The situation is pretty pathetic since the ownership of the medium which cartied the News is politically partisan in today’s politics, in fact a loser in the presidential election.

“Instead of talking about issues, they repeatedly sell lies in the hope that people believe them as truth.

“The government is already in transition phase. The Transition Committee, made up of representatives of the outgoing administration and the incoming one is meeting on an almost daily basis planning the handover to the Tinubu/Shettima administration.

“Thirteen committees as offshoots of the main committee, some, to arrange military drills and pulling out of President Buhari, are either all at work or soon to be. So far, everything is going very well and there is no indication of any hitches.

“As for the President, the Daura community has begun  preparations to receive their son back after the successful administration of the country for two terms of eight years. He, for his part, is eager to return home to enjoy his retirement.”
