Opinion: MC Oluomo Vs Igbo: It’s Not Agbero Logic

0

By Dr. Ugoji Egbujo

Mc Oluomo said it wasn’t him. That he didn’t actually threaten to teach a nice lesson to the ungrateful Igbo who seemed bent on disrupting the order and disrespecting constituted authorities in Lagos. Perhaps, he expected adult non-indigenes to know their limits and what could amount to an abuse of hospitality and misuse of democracy.

It is not agbero logic. In the tutorial video which mischief-makers made go viral on the eve of the governorship elections, gentle MC Oluomo was only teasing one Mama Chukwudi, from whom he routinely bought Indomie and guguru. But political opponents latched on to it and misconstrued it. They said Mr Oluomo was engaging in hate speech and dog whistle politics to help his benevolent Lagos political deities. It wasn’t MC Oluomo. He was only joking and telling Mama Chukwudi to stay in her house if she wouldn’t support the political business of her indomie customer.

So, let nobody malign MC Oluomo whose sun has risen. Oluomo is a renowned philanthropist who cares for common women like the Mama Chukwudis. It wasn’t MC Oluomo. The police in Lagos could have done more but they said they are investigating. That’s okay. So why can’t people be patient and allow the police, who are their friends, to do their job before blaming innocent Oluomo? Is it a sin to rise through the ranks in the motor park?

The police have handed the Oluomo video to their tactical cybercrime unit for in-depth forensic analysis. Why should people rush to conclusions? Is it because Oluomo is an honest and patriotic citizen? They are not even grateful that Mc Oluomo didn’t deny the video and dismiss it as photoshopped. After all didn’t Ganduje say his dollar-in-agbada video was fabricated? Olorun, Nigerians don’t like honest people.

But even if MC Oluomo asked the Igbo in Lagos to sit at home on election day, is that too much? After all, haven’t ndi Igbo become accustomed to sitting at home every Monday in their villages and cities? Are the boys in the southeast who make ndi Igbo sit at home every Monday more important or better trained than MC Oluomo’s staff? Why are the Igbo pretending and calling it xenophobia and voter suppression? Is it because they are in Lagos? After all those boys in the east that decide when and who comes out Mondays, are they not called The Good boys?

This thing is not Mc Oluomo’s fault. It’s the culture of politics in Rivers. How could it have been MC Oluomo? Thinking of it, many say, he hails from Kwara. So, he is not even from southern Nigeria let alone an indigene of Lagos. He lost his father at an early age and worked hard to escape penury. So how can he incite Lagos indigenes against the Igbo when he knows that discrimination once it starts, it loses its ears? How can a man from Kwara teach Lagos indigenes how to unsettle settlers who are beginning to feel at home in Lagos a bit too much? If Oluomo teaches real Lagosians bigotry and hate and how to reclaim their land, wouldn’t they one day rise and seize the motor parks from him and his boys?

So it couldn’t have been Mc Oluomo. He doesn’t hate the Igbo. He buys Indomie religiously from a Mama Chukwdi rather than a Mama Shakirat. He eats indomie, rides exotic cars and trains his children in American schools. Those who live in glass houses and eat pizzas have no business mingling with street urchins and throwing stones. If MC Oluomo hated the Igbo, he could have seized control of the markets too. Or do people think he doesn’t know there is more money in markets than in motor parks? The Oluomo man is a self-made contented and detribalized man. You can even call him a genius.

Otherwise, how did a primary school dropout from Kwara grow to rub shoulders with kings and captains of industry in Lagos? In fact, with the benefit of hindsight, wasn’t it ingenious that he used a sublime mama Chukwudi joke to send a caution to the entire Igbo in Lagos, leaving the police mesmerised?

If only the Igbo had tact. They ought to have understood by now that their main duty in Lagos is to trade, build houses, and pay taxes. After paying taxes, they must leave it to the hosts to decide who rules the land and how the taxes are used. They can’t keep putting their nzogbu nzogbu noses into everything. If they want to vote then they must travel to Owerri or Agulu. That Lagos is a former federal capital seeking special status doesn’t mean every Tom, Dick and Chinedu can arrive in a luxury bus at night and the next morning start rubbing shoulders with the descendants of Oduduwa.

After all, didn’t the Ngwa people in Aba tell other Igbos not to mess around with them on election day in Aba? Why then would anyone pick on a peaceful man like MC Oluomo as if he committed a crime against humanity?

A certain Oba had once warned the Igbo that if they didn’t submit to his political dictation, they risked being thrown into the lagoon. Is anybody talking about him? He didn’t say people would be chased away from the polling booths. He said they would be thrown into a bad place. So which is even better? To use agbero to correct the pomposity of some settlers and keep them and their PVCs away from the polling units or to throw them somewhere? Threats are criminal but let nobody go and say the Oba did anything so that the gods don’t get angry. People in Africa should be behaving as if they were in Norway.

MC Oluomo has said it wasn’t him who provoked the xenophobia against the Igbo. Perhaps people just suspected it would take the existence of an agbero command and control centre for all the thugs in Lagos to understand their duties and act without fail. And gossip about MC Oluomo because he influences motor parks and can summon such obedience and diligence from thugs all over the state. But MC Oluomo can’t hurt a fly. But if he only asked them to stay around their yards and play with their kinsmen while the Yoruba go vote in peace? Is that too bad compared to what the gods did in Obio Akpor, Rivers state? Can’t the Yoruba vote in their land without ndi Igbo coming with their ‘aja okuta mamuomi’ attitude to carp about democracy and constitution and dilute the vote? Imagine the temerity of trying to install a Chinedu over the children of Oduduwa in the name of democracy.

After the events of March 18, some other landlords like Bayo Onanuga threw their own jokes asking if the Igbo got the message they sent through the agberos. What a country!

Suspension: I’m Happy I Voted Against PDP – Anyim; Says He Warned Ayu

0
Anyim Pius Anyim

By Charles Igbo

A former Senate President under the President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, says he had no regrets voting against his Party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the last Governorship election.

Anyim, who was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation under the President Goodluck Administration, during the Governorship Election held on March 18, 2023, voted for the Candidate of the rival All Progressives Congress, APC, against the Candidate of his Party.

Two days to the Election, he had shocked not a few people when he gave an inkling that he would vote against his Party. He had told the Press at a Stakeholders meeting organised by Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. Dave Umahi, in Anyim’s Local Government Area, that he would vote for the Candidate of the APC, because he believes in the rotation of the office of the Governor, and that it was the turn of his Zone to produce the Governor.

He said he was not happy that his Party, the PDP, chose a Candidate from Governor Umahi’s Zone after Umahi had stayed for eight years in office.

Two things surprised his listeners. First that Anyim attended what was clearly an APC event. Second, that he attended it with Umahi present. Both men have, for years, not seen eye to eye politically. They had been bitter political enemies since Umahi defected to the APC from the PDP, and waged what was described as a war against his former compatriots in the PDP, especially, Anyim.

True to his words, Anyim voted for the Governorship Candidate of the APC who went ahead to win the election.

Embarrassed that the former Senate President, who is a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, and a former Presidential Aspirant of the Party, could publicly back the APC, the Party, on Wednesday, suspended him and a couple of others, including two former Governors  Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, and Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State for  anti-party activities.

But an unrepentant Anyim, in his response on Friday, said he had no regrets voting for the APC Governorship Candidate in Ebonyi State, and that he was disappointed with the suspension order slammed on him by the Party.

Mocking the Party, Anyim said that instead of its leadership to sit down and analyze how, and why, it performed woefully at the just concluded General elections, it was busy picking soft targets to hit at, while playing deaf to those who destroy the Party everyday. He disclosed that he warned the National Chairman of the Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, over the Governorship Candidate picked by the PDP for Ebonyi State, but was ignored, even after he showed his disappointment by absenting himself from the Presidential Campaign Rally in the State.

Following is the full text of Anyim’s response to his suspension.

RE: PDP REFERS ORTOM TO DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE, SUSPENDS FAYOSE, SHEMA, ANYIM, OTHERS.

“Having watched Mr. Debo Ologunagba read a press statement with the above title, on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, I have the following observations and comments to make:

“1.     The action of the NWC is, to say the least, disappointing.

I thought the concern of the NWC now would be how to undertake a thorough self-examination on why they performed so poorly in the 2023 elections rather than seek to further divide the party by shifting blames.

“2.     It smacks of arrogance for the NWC to put up a bold face instead of showing remorse and being sober for leading the party to such colossal loss in the 2023 general elections, thereby dashing the hopes and expectations of party members and indeed Nigerians.

“3.     It is clear that arising from the leadership style of the NWC, many members, intentionally and proudly, worked against the party including members of the NWC. Therefore, it is a display of innate cowardice for NWC to choose soft targets to suspend and fear those that daily demonize them.

“4.     It is difficult to explain why the NWC is in a hurry to suspend leaders of the party without recourse to fair hearing, without which their action is null and void.

“5.     In the case of Ebonyi State, the NWC imposed a candidate from the sitting Governor’s zone, contrary to the zoning formular in the state. Every effort to let the NWC see reason fell on deaf ears. On the day the party’s presidential rally was held in Ebonyi State, I told Dr. Ayu that I was boycotting the rally because I cannot support the candidate they imposed on Ebonyi State. Dr. Ayu did nothing. He did not care even as I did not attend the Ebonyi rally. The NWC may wish to know that I am proud to have supported the APC Gubernatorial candidate in Ebonyi State to win the election because that conforms to the equitable formular in Ebonyi State. It is therefore my expectation that the NWC should reverse itself in the interest of the party.”

Speculations are, however, strong that Chief Anyim may, eventually, dump the PDP for the APC.

AFCON Qualifiers: Guinea Bissau Claim Historic Win Over Super Eagles In Abuja

Super Eagles vs Djurtus of Guinea Bissau

By Akinwale Kasali

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were stunned by the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau as a Mama Balde 23rd minutes strike was all they needed to claim their first ever win against Nigeria.

The vociferous crowd at the Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola Stadium in Abuja were silenced by the visiting Guinea Bissau that remained resolute in defense, frustrating Nigeria’s attacker throughout the 90 minutes.

The Super Eagles started the game on a bright note, creating few clear cut chances but failed to convert them.

A major long pass from Jefferson Encada found Balde who Cooly slotted the ball past oncoming Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho to give them the lead.

The Three Time African Cup Of Nations Champion struggled upfront to get an equalizer which never came.

Guinean Bissau could have doubled the lead before the end of the first half but narrowly missed the begging chance.

In the Second Half, the Super Eagles gave their all but this never paid off.

Paul Onuachu and Moses Simon were introduced in the second half but this never metamorphosed into anything positive as the Guinea Bissau team remain compact in the defense and depended solely on counter attack.

Coach Jose Peseiro of the Super Eagles was forced to remove Wilfred Ndidi for Frank Onyeka, while Levij Akpoguma was forced out with an injury of the head and replaced by Oluwasemilogo Ajayi.

Samuel Chukwueze was a shadow of himself all through the match as his crosses failed to connect the two strikers upfront and fired wide on two occasions, prompting the Coach to substitute him for Ahmed Musa.

Nigeria started the game with Uzoho in goal, Calvin Bassey, Akpoguma, Zaidu Sanusi and Bright Osayi-Samuel were at the heart of the defense, while Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman were the midfielders.

Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho paired upfront, but the Djurtus team were resilient, determined, proactive and ruthless in defense, denying the Super Eagles the needed equalizer.

With this victory, Guinea Bissau top the Group with Seven Points, Nigeria Six Point, Sierra Leone Two and São Tomé and Principe have just a point.

Sierra Leone was forced to a 2-2 draw by São Tomé and Principe to record their second draw in the AFCON 2023 qualifiers.

The Super Eagles will travel to Bissau for the return leg of the double header on Tuesday, March 28th, 2023.

May 29 Hand Over Date Remains Sacrosanct – Presidency

Muhammadu Buhari - Londo Trip

By Ayodele Oni

President Mohammadu Buhari is more than prepared to hand over to the president elect, Bola Tinubu come May 29.

The statement is coming from the presidency against report in some online media to the effect that Buhari will not hand over to his successor.

A statement on Friday signed by Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, stated that “The Presidency wishes to denounce as outrageous and fake, and condemns the fake news brigade for attributing a false quote to President Muhammadu Buhari and circulating it.

“How can you vigorously campaign for somebody, vote for him and then say you won’t hand over to him? This beggars belief.

“The situation is pretty pathetic since the ownership of the medium which cartied the News is politically partisan in today’s politics, in fact a loser in the presidential election.

“Instead of talking about issues, they repeatedly sell lies in the hope that people believe them as truth.

“The government is already in transition phase. The Transition Committee, made up of representatives of the outgoing administration and the incoming one is meeting on an almost daily basis planning the handover to the Tinubu/Shettima administration.

“Thirteen committees as offshoots of the main committee, some, to arrange military drills and pulling out of President Buhari, are either all at work or soon to be. So far, everything is going very well and there is no indication of any hitches.

“As for the President, the Daura community has begun  preparations to receive their son back after the successful administration of the country for two terms of eight years. He, for his part, is eager to return home to enjoy his retirement.”

Osun Guber: Governor Adeleke Extends Olive Branch To Oyetola; Join Hand In Building Osun State Together, Gov. Urges Him

By Akinwale Kasali

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has extended a hand of fellowship and sportsmanship to former Governor of the State, Adegboyega Oyetola.

Adeleke asking him to join hands with his administration in building the State together.

He made the call after the Appeal Court, Abuja, Division set aside the judgement of the Osun Governorship Election Petition Tribunal that annulled the election of Adeleke during the July 16, 2022, Osun governorship poll.

The Justice Mohammed Lawal-led three-member panel in a unanimous decision held that Adeleke’s appeal to challenge the tribunal judgment that sacked him from office was “meritorious”.

Oyetola and his Party, All Progressives Congress, APC, were slammed a fine of N500,000 by the Court.

The Judges also resolved that the preponderance of proof that there was over-voting in the elections rested on the petitioner and not the defendant.

Speaking after the Court of Appeal’s verdict, Adeleke said, “ “Let me use this opportunity to extend sincere hands of fellowship to former Governor Oyetola and the APC. Let’s build the State together. Let us unite for the good of our people. The State needs leaders across party lines to join hands for robust and accelerated development of the State.

“As brothers and sisters, we are all requested to start the process of healing. Forget party politics as the election is over. All members of the political class in Osun state should join hands with me to take our state to greater heights,” Adeleke said in a statement he personally signed.

The statement added, “I thank God Almighty and our good people of Osun state. I dedicate this victory to God and my people. This judgement confirmed my earlier position that the judgement of the Tribunal is a miscarriage of Justice. The judiciary has right the wrongs of the lower Court. This has rekindled the confidence of the nation in the integrity of the judiciary as the stabiliser of the judiciary and the last hope of the common man.

“I am particularly glad that the Court of Appeal has ruled that the BVAS machine and voters register are the primary sources, not the report from the server. This has strengthened our democracy and removed a time bomb which the judgement of the Tribunal had planted for our democracy.

”I appreciate Osun people for standing by me and my party through repeated validation of my governorship mandate at the recent federal and state elections. My party won three straight elections from July 16th 2022 to the March 18th ,2023. It was a resounding vote of confidence in my governorship by the people of Osun state. The judiciary has now confirmed the will of the people that I am the validly elected Governor of my State.

”My appreciation goes to the civil servants, artisans, market people, clerics, students, women and youth. Osun people defended the mandate from 2022 to date.

“I commend the judiciary for resisting all pressure. Rule of law is strengthened when judgement affirms the will of the people. On behalf of Osun people and my party, the PDP, we appreciate the judiciary and the men of conscience on the bar and the bench.”

Oyetola Goes To Supreme Court Over Court Of Appeal Judgement On Osun Poll

By Ayodele Oni

Former Osun state Governor, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, has appealed to members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remain calm and not to be discouraged over the outcome of the Friday’s appeal, saying the last is yet to be heard on the governorship.

Oyetola stated that his abiding faith in God to reclaim his mandate remains undoubted.

Reacting to the Appeal Court judgement, which upturned the decision of the Tribunal that initially sacked Governor Ademola Adeleke, Oyetola in a statement by his media aide, Ismail Omipidan, noted that his belief in the judiciary also remains unshaken.

“We have heard the judgement of the Appeal Court, but we are yet to receive a copy of the judgement.

“However, from the snippets we are getting, we believe we have a potential ground to approach the Supreme Court.

“Our belief in the judiciary remains unshaken, just as my abiding faith in the God’s promise regarding the reclaim of my mandate remains undoubted.

“I therefore, appeal to our supporters and party members to remain calm as we take the next step.”

Ademola Adeleke

By Ayodele Oni

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun state has described the unanimous judgment of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja which affirmed the victory of Governor Ademola Adeleke, as a reflection of the will of the people of the state.

Mr Oladele Olabamiji, spokesperson of the party in the state, while reacting to the appellate court’s judgment, on Friday in Osogbo noted that the party was confident that the judgment of the tribunal which sacked Adeleke would be overturned.

“We thank God Almighty and the honourable Justices of the Appeal Court, who today affirmed the collective resolve of the good people of Osun in electing Adeleke.

“We knew all along that in the face of the law and the weight of evidence before the court, the judgment at the lower tribunal was purely a travesty of justice. Our confidence never shook for once that we will get justice.

“We, however, want to thank the Court of Appeal, the laws of Nigeria, the electoral act and especially the democratic wishes of the people of Osun.

“When people can no longer vote and have their votes counted, where people can no longer choose their leaders freely, then there will be trouble but today, the appellate court have corrected the danger in judgment of the lower court.

“We are not expecting anything different at the Supreme by the grace of God Almighty.

“Osun belongs to all of us. The government is the government of everybody.

“People should celebrate in moderation, go about their normal businesses and continue to support the governor.”

Government Committed To Programmes On Poverty Alleviation, Uzodimma Tells EU-UAES Research Team

Hope Uzodimma

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has said that his government is committed to programmes that will help to alleviate poverty in the State and make life more meaningful for the public.

Governor Uzodimma spoke on Friday at the Executive Chambers of the Government House, Owerri when he received in audience a team of European Union (EU) and University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo (UAES) who came to brief him on a multi-dimentional agricultural research project funded by the EU with Imo State and UAES considered as partner and beneficiary respectively.

Giving reasons for the establishment of the University as a business-oriented institution, Governor Uzodimma noted that local and foreign collaboration on programmes and researches are in line with the aims and objectives of the tertiary institution.

Governor Uzodimma who maintained that all relevant agencies of government will collaborate and cooperate with the team in the interest of Imo farmers and society at large on the research, commended the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, ably led by  Prof CC Eze, for his efforts in positioning the institution for global competitiveness in critical areas of human needs.

As the Visitor to the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Governor Uzodimma not only thanked the team members for their choice of Imo State and UAES for the pilot project, but wished them well in their efforts to make the best out of the research.

“Take the institution to greater heights in the interest of the State and society,” Governor Uzodimma told Prof Eze.

He further invited other foreign and local agencies to emulate the EU- UAES arrangement and key into programmes in the interest of the society.

Earlier in his brief remarks, Prof.  Eze introduced the delegation to the Governor and thanked him for giving the University the enabling environment to succeed.

The leader of the team, Mr. Chri Addy-Nayo thanked the governor for granting  audience to the members within a short time and explained that the research team is working to promote digital financial solutions for farmers in remote communities to adapt to climate change.

According to him, the research, he said is in line with the global plan to have members of the African Union and ECOWAS of which Nigeria is one, to achieve food security against malnutrition, climate change, insecurity, self resourceful/sufficiency, among others in 2060, through innovations and new knowledge.

Mr. Addy-Nayo added that “the research is run on technical and financial support of the European Union with local and foreign partners such as, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Al-Hikman University (HUI), Ilorin and Start-up European Regional Network (SERN) of Belgium.”

He said that Imo State and the UAES were chosen to be part of the current phase – the pilot phase – and assured the Governor that the project will succeed and attract more support for the Institution.

However, he maintained that though the research places big responsibility on the partners and beneficiaries, he added that the benefits will manifest within three years and can attract more EU interventions.

The African facilitator for the research, Mr. Oliver Nwankwo, also spoke on the benefits of the programme to the State and the society and thanked the Governor for finding time to meet with them and assuring them of his commitment to the programme.

On the entourage of the EU- UAES team were the Registrar, Prince Edward Njemanze, Bursar, Mr. Robert Anikputa, University Librarian, Prof Chidi Nwosu, Deputy Registrar, Dr Emma Uzodimma, Ag. Director ICT, Dr. Leo Orji and the University PRO, Mr Ikechukwu Ogbonna.

The Deputy Governor, Prof Placid Njoku, the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, Chief Cosmos Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr Nnamdi Anyaehie, Commissioners and other top functionaries of government joined the Governor to receive the visitors.

Call For Increase In SSB Tax To 20 Percent Heightens, As Medical Experts, Advocates Expose Health Dangers Accrued To SSB Intakes

Sugar Sweetened Beverages

By Akinwale Kasali

There is a call from health experts and advocates on the Federal Government to review the Finance 2021 Act on Sugar Sweetened Beverages, SSB Tax, from N10 Per Litre to 20 Percent, due to its hazardous health implications on Consumers.

SSBs can be found in carbonated Soft drinks, energy drinks, concentrates or syrups, sport drinks, pre sweetened teas and coffees, enhanced waters, milk based drinks, less than 100 percent fruit or vegetable juices such as juice drinks and nectar.

The high sugar consumptions among children, adolescents and adults has led to non-communicable diseases, NCDs, such as Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, which is responsible for 74 percent of all deaths globally, with Nigeria recording a high percent.

The risk of consumption of sugar can be traced to this SSBs which health implication leads to NCDs.

Following this development, health advocates, Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, CAPPA, said that in tackling the SSB menace and its health implications, Taxation is however an effective policy measure to reduce sugar consumption, control incidence of diet related NCDs and reduced its associated health and economic burden.

According to Dr. Francis Adegbule, a Private Health Consultant at the University College Hospital, UCH, University of Ibadan, “SSBs offer more harm than good. Factors leading to the consumption of SSBs is lack of awareness and public education, affordability of SSB products, mindset, availability, urbanization.

“The intake of SSB leads to obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, Cardiovascular diseases, kidney diseases, Non-Alcoholic Liver Diseases. Study have shown that 30 Percent of Adults in Nigeria have hypertension and this could be traced to intake of SSBs”, Adegbule stated.

Preferring a solution to this menace, Adegbule said it was necessary to build a healthy public policy, and restrictions by Government on the SSB Industry on Marketing of Sugary Foods for Children, heavy taxation of SSBs and reorientation of health services.

He stressed that Water is the best option as against consumption of SSBs.

Adeolu Adebiyi, Senior Regional Policy Adviser, Food Program for Global Health Advocacy Incubator, GHAI, said that increased in SSB taxation was necessary for Nigerians to live healthier and have a healthy environment.

He added that SSB Taxation increment from the N10 per litre to 20 percent taxation was germane so that there would reduction in the consumption of sugar, which will in turn reduce the health challenges the consumers are undergoing.

The Executive Director of CAPPA, Akinbode Oluwafemi said that the SSB industry are saying that the 20 percent taxation is targeted at the masses, who will bear the brunt and also lead to job loss.

Oluwafemi however queried this analogy, stressing that there is no nutritive value SSB products have, rather, it endangers the health of everyone irrespective of status.

He added that what is been advocated for is that when the SSB tax in increased this will deter the minds of the consumers from consuming it because the prices of the SSB products will skyrocket.

“The SSB Industry players are saying it is a lot to send them out of business, but what they need to do is reformulation of their product by reducing the sugar content , and also explore healthier alternatives.

“The industry is just bent of making profit and more profit at the expense of the health and lives of the consumers. Between and profit and Health which is more important?”, Oluwafemi queried.

It would be recalled that the clamour for more taxes on SSB has been rife.

The National Action for Sugar Reduction Coalition, NASR, and the President, Nigeria Cancer Society, NCS, had earlier advocated for more taxes on SSB to create more effect on consumption.

Adamu Alhassan, the co-Chairman of the coalition had argued that the current N10 per litre tax on product has no effect on the production industries.

He said that increasing SSB taxes would improve the health impact of taxation on high blood pressure, stroke and even cancers.

“These diseases are very expensive to treat. There is no evidence that the N10/litre tax has had any such effects on the industry.

“NASR has maintained and has redesigned effort to reduce consumption of these harmful products and ultimately prevent the burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) which has been on the increase.

“Taxes can improve health by leading consumers to buy less and lowering the risk of NCDs, it has been scientifically proven that the world has achieved a significant impact on SSB consumption patterns through tax.

“The N10 per litre tax is not sufficient to reduce consumption and consequently, and if tax revenue is invested, can relieve the overburdened health system.

“Countries such as South Africa, Mexico and the Philippines, where SSB taxes have been implemented to reduce the risk of chronic diseases that has burdened families, have not led to job losses.

“Beverage industry arguments are unfounded, as indicated by the evidence from these countries,” Alhassan said.

He stated that Nigeria is in need of more policies that would protect public heath and raise revenue for healthcare.

APGA: Njoku To Dialogue With Soludo, After Supreme Court Affirms Him Chairman

0

Edozie Njoku, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA. has called for a dialogue with Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State.

Njoku made the suggestion following his affirmation by the Supreme Court ad the authentic APGA chairman. Soludo is the only governor under the party’s banner.

The party has been polarised by two factions led by Njoku and Victor Oye, who has the backing of Governor Soludo.

But following the apex court ruling, Njoku said the Anambra helmsman must embrace dialogue with a view to moving the party forward.

The apex court had through its judgment of Friday overruled itself for erroneously included the name of Oye in its earlier judgment by retired Justice Mary Odili in 2021.

In the lead ruling that was delivered by Justice Mohammed Lawal, the court said it has the powers to review its judgement and correct such “accidental slip or error”, when it is brought to its attention.
It, therefore, issued an order, expunging the aspect of the judgement where Oye’s name was reflected as the national chairman of the party.

The ruling followed a motion that was brought before the court by Chief Njoku.

Njoku had in an application he filed through his team of lawyers led by Mr. Chike Onyemenam, SAN, urged the apex court to correct a typographical error in its judgement, which he said wrongly handed the leadership of the party to Chief Oye.

The Applicant noted that the Supreme Court had in a letter it wrote to him on January 19, wherein it addressed him as the National Chairman of APGA, asked him to approach it by way of a motion to regularize the said judgement.

Relying on Order 8 Rule 16 of the Supreme Court Rules, Njoku prayed the court to correct the said error in the lead judgment it delivered on October 14, 2021, in an appeal that was presided over by Justice Mary Peter-Odili (Rtd).

He specifically urged the apex court to correct an accidental slip at Page 13, lines 3 to 4 of its judgment, where instead of writing the name of ‘Edozie Njoku’ who was unlawfully removed from his position as the person that was validly elected as National Chairman of APGA at the convention the party held at Owerri in 2019, mistakenly inserted the name of Victor Oye, who was not a party in the substantive suit that gave rise to the appeal.
