Iyorchia Ayu - PDP Chairman

By Ayodele Oni

The hope of Dr Iyorcha Ayu to return, soon, as the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been dashed.

A High Court in Makurdi, Benue State, has affirmed his suspension from the PDP, and his eventual removal as the Party’s National Chairman.

Justice Maurice Ikpambese, who gave the judgement on Friday, said that Ayu did not contest that he did not pay his dues up to date.

The Judge said Ayu’s membership of the PDP elapsed with his failure to pay his membership and subscription dues.

Justice E.I. Kpochi had, on March 27, 2023, issued an interim injunction restraining Ayu from parading himself as the National Chair of the PDP.

The Judge issued the order following an ex parte application by a member of the party in Benue State, Terhide Utaan.

Delivering judgement on the suit, Justice Ikpambese, who is also the Chief Judge of Benue State said,  “The first defendant’s (Ayu) membership of the second defendant(PDP)  elapsed with his failure to pay his membership and subscription fee.

“The First defendant (Ayu) did not contest his suspension by the Igyorov Ward Executive, neither did he initiate any suit challenging his suspension.

“He has left the court with no option than to believe that he has consented to his suspension.

“The Plaintiff has therefore proven his case, all the questions for determination have been resolved in favour of the plaintiff, he is entitled to all the reliefs sought. I so order.”

Ondo : SDP Demands Whereabout, Health Condition Of Gov Akeredolu

Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State

By Ayodele Oni

As the health of Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu continues to raise concern, moreso silence by his aides, the Social Democratic Party, (SDP) has demanded that the people deserve to know the whereabouts of their Governor.

The SDP, in a statement on Friday signed by its Chairman, Stephen Akinwale, noted that there are now serious doubts about Governor Akeredolu’s capacity to continue to govern the Sunshine State as his medical conditions remain shrouded in secrecy.

“In recent, the rumour of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s poor health has dominated the media and spread like wildfire in Ondo State.

“While it is no longer news that Governor Akeredolu is dealing with health issues as this was made clear in the viral voice note that was released by Ondo State First Lady, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu, in recent weeks, the Governor’s rumoured alleged battle with blood cancer, his bedridden condition, and his inability to sign documents have taken centre stage.

“While the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State had enthusiastically and eagerly anticipated that the Governor would refute such rumours by presenting himself to the public, the silence from the Governor’s camp and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State is concerning and alarming.

“To us at Ondo SDP, therefore, their silence and failure to deny or confirm the information implies consent.

“There are now serious doubts about Governor Akeredolu’s capacity to continue to govern the Sunshine State as his medical conditions remain shrouded in secrecy.

“It is quite disturbing that the state of the governor’s health has become a topic of state curiosity and concern.

“This situation continues to undermine the ability of the State government to fulfil its obligations and commitments, including those requiring the government to provide economic pathways to millions of people facing absolute poverty and uncertainty in the Sunshine State due to the reckless and insensitive removal of subsidy by the APC-led federal government.

“Ondo SDP calls on Arakunrin to respect the good people of Ondo State who have voted for him twice by presenting his medical records to the general public.

“We strongly believe that the good people of Ondo State have the right to know about the medical conditions of Arakunrin Akeredolu.

“In contrast to ordinary residents, who have the right to keep their health state to themselves, high level elected officials like Arakunrin, whose treatment is being paid for by the public, cannot hide behind personal rules.

“Similarly, because Governor Akeredolu’s position is that of a trustee, he is required, as the Governor of Ondo State, to inform the residents of Ondo State accurately about his present medical conditions.

“Ensuring full access to his medical data would also assist and prevent instances and situations where the governor’s health is the daily subject of speculative interpretations, embarrassing commentary, incomplete, vague, and erroneous reports.

“Ironically, Ondo SDP recalled that Arakunrin Akeredolu was one of the primary figures who actively and vocally criticized and called for late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua’s resignation when the latter suffered poor health condition in 2009.

“Now, Arakunrin Akeredolu has done the exact opposite by clinging to power and hide the true state of his health from people as he battles with ill-health.

“While we pray for the speedy recovery of Mr. Governor, it is high time he did the needful.”

Ondo Assembly Chaos: Oloyelogun Opens Up, Says He Never Resigned

Bamidele Oleyelogun

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun, has refuted the rumour going round that he has resigned his position as the Speaker of the House.

The Speaker, in a statement stated that: “This is to notify the general public that, I Oleyelogun Bamidele David did not resign my position as the Speaker of the House.

“The purported letter of resignation which is in circulation is the handiwork of the fifth Columnists who are bent on throwing Ondo State into anarchy, particularly the House of Assembly.

“The purported resignation is no doubt the figment of the imagination of the peddlers of such heinous act as l did not contemplate or discussed such move with any member of the Assembly or family members.

“Let me tell members of the public that the purported letter of resignation did not emanate from me as it was forged by purveyors of such letter.

“The Clerk of the House, Mr.Benjamin Jaiyeola (ESQ)has informed me that he did not receive any letter of resignation which has given credence to the fact that the faceless writer is not informed of the process through which such weighty exercise can take.

“I have not informed the Executive Arm of Government of such resignation and I urge my Honourable Colleagues, Staffers of the House of Assembly, Members of my Constituency to disregard the letter in its entirety.

“I also urge the Security Agencies to investigate this false and malicious letter that has emanated from the enemies who are working against the existing peace in the State.”

He was however silent on the disruption of the last sitting of the assembly which was scheduled to hold on Friday.

Police Stop Valedictory Sitting Of Ondo Assembly Over Planned Impeachment Of Speaker

Ondo House of Assembly

Tension enveloped the Ondo State House of Assembly on Friday as armed security operatives shut the Assembly Complex gate at Alagbaka Akure, thus preventing the Valedictory sitting of the lawmakers

The action of the policemen and others may not be unconnected with a suspected plot by the outgoing members of the Assembly to impeach the Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun.

Already, a letter of resignation, said to have been written by the embattled speaker, which the assembly spokesman described as fake, is in circulation.

It was gathered that the two gates of the assembly complex were blocked by armed security men from the Nigeria police.

It was still uncertain why the Lawmakers are planning to impeach the speaker, few days to the end of their tenure.

When contacted on telephone, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Olugbenga Omole confirmed that armed security men prevented the final plenary sitting of the Assembly that supposed to hold today, Friday.

Omole dismissed insinuation that the Speaker had resigned, adding that the signature of Oleyelogun was forged on a fake letter in circulation.

The outgoing Spokesman of the House said there are plots to scuttle the last sitting of the 9th Assembly.

Things fell apart at the assembly long ago when the deputy speaker, Ogundeji Iroju was removed and replaced by Samuel Aderoboye.

Iroju’s petition to the anti graft agency culminated in the arraignment of the speaker and others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC).

What could have promoted last minute planned removal of the speaker still remains unknown.

Why I Was Invited By EFCC – Fmr Gov Fayemi

By Ayodele Oni

The immediate past Governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, (NGF) Dr Kayode Fayemi, has confirmed his invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) as reported by the media.

The former NGF Chairman, however,  refuted the claim that he is under probe by the anti graft Commission over an alleged N4bn fraud.

Fayemi, in a statement on Friday by the Head of the Fayemi Media Office, , Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, said during his visit to the EFCC, “no such allegation was raised during his conversation” with officials of the anti-graft agency.

The statement, however, noted that all Fayemi did during the conversation with the officials of the EFCC in Ilorin, Kwara State, was respond to a frivolous petition from a group that was trying to soil his good name and image.

The statement read, “We would like to address the concerns surrounding the invitation and subsequent visit of Dr Kayode Fayemi, the immediate past governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, to the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

“Last month, Dr Fayemi received an invitation from the Ilorin office of the EFCC regarding a money laundering petition against him.

“It was during the height of the preparations for the change of government, with many activities and programmes lined up as part of the event.

“A key member of the APC, Dr Fayemi was already committed to playing important roles at these events and his non-appearance would have impacted them significantly.

“Understanding the significance of his commitments at that time, Dr Fayemi duly notified the EFCC of his willingness to cooperate but requested a more suitable date for his appearance.

“Fayemi, on Thursday, accompanied by his counsel, visited the EFCC office in Ilorin, and engaged in fruitful discussions with the investigators before being allowed to depart after a few hours.

“We firmly believe that Dr Fayemi’s visit has provided answers to the agency’s inquiries regarding the petition. However, should there be a need for further clarification, Dr Fayemi stands ready to cooperate fully.

“We wish to note, too, that contrary to the news that made the rounds about a purported N4b fraud case against Dr Fayemi, no such allegation was raised in his conversation with the EFCC.

“All he did was respond to a frivolous petition from a faceless group, the so-called Ekiti Patriotic Coalition, which we strongly believed is a front for some anti-Fayemi politicians, who are trying to soil the former governor’s good name and image.”

The statement added that throughout Fayemi’s tenure, he served the people of Ekiti State with utmost dedication and was renowned for his principled leadership.

“As governor, he consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to the welfare of the citizens, driving notable advancements in infrastructure development and attracting valuable investment opportunities to the state.

“We affirm that Dr Fayemi will continue to uphold the highest standards of integrity that he’s known for, and we trust that the truth will prevail in due course.”

OPINION: Nigeria Voted For Tinubu To End Petrol Subsidy

0

By Musa Ilallah

By the time President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reiterated, in his inauguration speech on Monday, May 29, 2023, that the end has come to Nigeria’s longstanding subsidy regime, it had become clear that it truly was time to close that chapter for good.

To its credit, the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari had already set in motion the steps for a post-subsidy regime in Nigeria, with the historic presidential assent to the long-overdue petroleum industry act (PIA), the ongoing total overhaul of Port Harcourt and Warri Refineries, and the significant government support provided to push the 650,000bpd Dangote Refinery project to fruition.

In my view, this is ‘progressive continuity’ at work. And this is also the time to send a strong reminder to Nigerians that this is exactly what they voted for – the end of petrol subsidies, and the replacement with a new system that has no room for rent-seekers and economic saboteurs; a system that allows the trillions of naira that used to go into petrol subsidies to instead be channelled into more productive areas of the economy.

Yes, Nigerians indeed voted for the removal of fuel subsidy. All the leading candidates in the last presidential election agreed on the fact that the subsidy had to go, and urgently too. There was unanimity on this particular point. And now, the winner of that election, who is our president today, has taken the bold step.

I expect the opposition contenders, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, to immediately commend President Tinubu for taking a step they all promised to take. I expect them to set politics aside at this pivotal moment in the history of our dear country, and rally their supporters behind this very bold move.

Now that the fuel subsidy is gone, the funds can be used for things that are far more beneficial to the good people of Nigeria. Anyone who lives in or near a border town in Nigeria today can testify to the extent to which unscrupulous persons were taking advantage of the price arbitrage between Nigerian petrol and that of neighbouring countries.

In Cameroon, Niger, and the Benin Republic, subsidised Nigerian petrol is smuggled across the border and sold at a significant profit on the black market, and even at that, the price is still cheaper than the official price in those countries.

Essentially, Nigeria has been subsidising local and foreign black marketers and the citizens of neighbouring countries, while also catering to the consumption excesses of the wealthy and their large fleets of cars.

President Buhari signing the PIA in August 2021 was the first bold and major step to bring this subsidy regime to an end. Recall that the PIA—or PIB as it was known, pre-assent—appeared jinxed until President Buhari broke the jinx. With his presidential assent, the stage was immediately set for the full deregulation of petroleum product pricing in Nigeria.

The next step was to prepare the populace for the implementation of the deregulation, which was what culminated in the 2023 budget in which only a half-year’s budget was provided for. President Tinubu reiterated this fact in his May 29, 2023, inauguration address that the 2023 federal budget has “no provision” for subsidy beyond June.

I believe that the Nigerian media have a lot of sensitisation work on their hands to help Nigerians contextualise this journey that started two years ago with the passage and presidential assent to the PIA.

Now is the time for all Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration, to ensure the success of this decision. Indeed, nobody said the removal of petrol subsidies would be easy. Challenging times lie ahead, but there is also a lot of positive potential ahead, as well.

Nigeria is freeing up billions of dollars that can go into advancing the fantastic foundational work of infrastructure and social investment that former President Buhari has laid. We will stop subsidising rent-seekers and economic saboteurs. Fuel shortages will become a thing of the past in a deregulated regime.

And, very importantly, the Dangote Refinery and all our new modular refineries —another important Buhari legacy— will now be able to optimally operate in a deregulated environment. They will all now have the chance to produce petrol, a decision the newly-completed modular refineries have been delaying until the emergence of full deregulation.

This is an epochal moment for our downstream petroleum industry and for the entire country as a whole. I would be the first to agree that it might not feel that way now, especially for the tens of millions of Nigerians who now have to pay much higher prices for petrol and cope with significant increases in the cost of living.

I expect that in the days and weeks ahead, the Tinubu administration will roll out robust relief and intervention schemes, to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal. I urge them to do this boldly and speedily.

I also want to appeal to the labour unions to see the full context and significance of this moment, and to place themselves on the side of long-term positive change, instead of short-term resistance that would ultimately be counter-productive to the developmental fortunes of our country.

For fuel marketers, it is critical to emphasise that deregulation should not become an excuse for exploitation. Under no circumstances should Nigerians be subjected to price manipulation. I commend the NNPC Limited for the prompt publication of their own retail prices, to serve as a useful guide to Nigerians, and help keep private marketers in check.

It is my belief that as time goes on, we will see additional entrants into the fuel distribution market and by extension more competition and innovation that will benefit the consumers.

In closing, let us all remember, again, that Nigerians voted overwhelmingly for the removal of the subsidy. All three leading presidential candidates, who got a combined 91% of all the votes cast in the February 25, 2023, election, emphatically promised to remove the subsidy.

Now that the petrol subsidy is gone, let us rally behind the decision and join hands to ensure that its numerous long-term benefits are allowed to manifest.

Knowing that those benefiting illegally from the subsidy will definitely push back and seek to sabotage and undermine it, we must unite as a country to resist them and let us agree to enthusiastically sacrifice today’s comfort for tomorrow’s prosperity.

NIMASA, NCDMB Partnership Will Grow Economy- Jamoh

0

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Bashir Jamoh OFR, said policies of the current administration at the Agency are tailored to complement efforts of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, to grow the Nigerian economy through the Oil and Gas sector.

The NIMASA DG, who was represented by the Agency’s Director of Cabotage Services, Mrs. Rita Uruakpa at the 2023 Nigerian Oil and Gas Opportunity Fair, NOGOF, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State urged stakeholders to consider a change of trade terms in the Oil and Gas sector from the Free on Board, FOB, to the Cost, Insurance and Freight, CIF, model.

According to Jamoh, the efforts of the NCDMB at helping in the development of the indigenous maritime sector had not gone unnoticed stating that, ‘We appreciate the efforts of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board at growing the indigenous maritime sector, such as the proposed Brass Shipyard. We at NIMASA will continue to strive for the development of our maritime sector by pursuing policies that will ensure the indigenous capacity is grown, which in turn will impact our fleet expansion to position them to be able to participate in the affreightment of the products’.

Speaking on opportunities for indigenous businesses in maritime, he had this to say, ‘I want to reiterate that we must also create a suitable and sustainable business and investment environment that will afford indigenous operators’ opportunities to participate in the oil & gas industry with a view to accelerating Nigeria’s income for the Oil Industry which in turn will impact our GDP”.

On his part, Simbi Wabote Executive Secretary NCDMB, charged firms operating in the sector to prepare themselves adequately, restating that the oil and gas industry is highly technical and does not compromise safety and standards.

In his words, “If someone gives you projects he intends to execute in the next two years; Nigerian companies, having listened to the opportunities, should go back and continue to build their capacities in readiness to actively participate.”

He also challenged relevant agencies to address the worrisome security challenges, particularly oil theft in the Niger Delta, as this would enable the production of hydrocarbons at reasonable costs and profitability.
