OPINION: What’s in a Book? You’ll Never Know, Until…

By Azu Ishiekwene

Earlier this week, I teased on my social handle about my encounter with a deity. Of course, not in the sense that one might meet a deity in the groove of a village forest.

Yet, those who have met this man – who know him – might agree that Sam Amuka, fondly called Uncle Sam, is a deity of sorts. The trail that forged the seasons of his career goes back many decades to his years at Daily Times which at its prime, was Africa’s leading journalism shrine.

On Sunday I went to see Uncle Sam, to talk about my new book, Writing for Media and Monetising It. I had dispatched a copy to him in advance, but the ritual would be incomplete without a libation.

So, I took along an extra copy and went to his Anthony Lagos residence, where he has lived like a regular Joe for many decades. As I waited for him upstairs on the balcony of his house, I glanced back and forth between the Sunday newspapers strewn on a cane table, and a silver tray with a big flask, teacups, a box of Lipton and assorted teas, a bottle of honey, skimmed milk and over a dozen of packets of Kemps cracker biscuits.

It wasn’t long before Uncle Sam emerged from the corridor, his imminent presence announced by the barking of a puddle that first accosted me when I climbed the stairs. The puddle was not here when I visited a few years ago.

“Superstar!” Uncle Sam teased, as he came out.

I replied, smiling, that 88 was good on him. He corrected me: “I’m 89!” He then tore a packet of Kemps crackers and sat on the bed-shaped cane chair to my right, waiving the young man who had followed behind to make him some tea.

The young man took out two Lipton tea bags, and after pouring hot water from the flask went on to add not one or two, but I think three teaspoons of honey. Then, he grabbed the tin of skimmed milk. I looked at Uncle Sam, thinking the young man was mistaken and expecting he would ask him to stop. He didn’t. Instead, he looked approvingly, even expectantly, munching his Kemps.

At 59, in my obsession to live a long, healthy life, only God knows how many things I have given up. I can’t remember the last time I used any sweetener, gluten-free or not, for my tea or pap, much less milk. I was puzzled to see an 89-year-old man having his tea not just with plenty of honey but also topping the brew with spoonsful of milk.

Uncle Sam smiled as he took the steaming teacup from the young man, stirred it gently, and took a sip. As if to create the perfect ambience for his refreshment, he turned on music stored in a flash drive that was plugged into a player.

“You don’t know I’m called Daddy DJ?” he joked in response to my puzzled look.

Sam Amuka, I know. Uncle Sam, I know. Who doesn’t? He is the Jimmy Breslin of Nigeria’s journalism. Writing about Breslin, who died seven years ago at 88, Tom Wolfe described him as, “The greatest columnist of my era.” And that, from Wolfe, a master of the craft in his own right, says a lot.

In a tribute to Breslin, The Guardian wrote that he was the champion of the trials and troubles of the ordinary people in New York. “He filled his columns with gangsters and thieves, whom he knew first-hand from drinking in the same bars. He told stories that smacked of blarney behind their anger.”

And Breslin himself once said, “Rage is the only quality which has kept me, or anybody I have ever studied, writing for newspapers.” That was Sad Sam, the tempered version of which we now know as “Uncle Sam.”

But “Daddy DJ?” I was meeting him in that incarnation for the first time this Sunday morning. Yet, it made no difference. I could see a common thread of empathy and humanity binding the three persons in one man. I was happy and comfortable to share the story of my new book, in-between sips of my own tea – sugarless, milk-less – and yes, also in-between mouthfuls of Kemps cracker biscuits which I had not tasted for a very long time.

I did not start out to write a self-help book. As my career as a journalist crossed the 35-year mark and I inch closer to the sixth floor of life, it became increasingly difficult to ignore suggestions to share my experience in a more permanent form. I’ve been writing for the media since I was 22 and even managed to write a book on Nigeria’s anti-corruption war in 2008. But the urge to share more has increased.

In yielding, I wondered what I could do differently. In recent times, I have been invited by universities and professional groups to speak on the challenges facing journalists and young writers, especially in light of the extraordinary explosion in the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace, at school and at home.

Decades after TIME magazine famously predicted that journalism could be on its death throes and it turned out that the death was exaggerated, the technology appears to have sparked the second panic wave.

So what? I thought perhaps it might be useful to combine my speaking experiences with decades of writing a weekly column now enriched in both audio and visual formats to serve the needs of a younger generation of content providers, especially students and those in the earlier stages of their writing career, trying to find their way. And not just trying to find their way – but also, trying to earn some extra money or attract value, while doing so.

The book title clearly suggests a media bias – media here meaning traditional and social media. That is deliberate as audiences in these areas are my primary focus. Whether you are still in school, just starting out on a writing career path or are, in fact, in the middle levels of your career, you would find this book useful.

It draws not only on my personal experience – struggles and triumphs – I also interviewed professionals across age brackets who generously shared their experiences with me.

For me, writing this was like walking back through the years of my career, beginning from when there was even no career but just the dream to become a writer someday, to my schools when I was formally introduced to the craft, through many changes along the way, a good number of which I didn’t even see coming.

You don’t have to wear my shoes or tread my path. But this book is a good guide for common obstacles many literary content providers face in the new world as they try to find their own way.

I set out to do an online course largely on journalistic writing for value, not to write a book, but ended up with a resource that will benefit a much larger variety of audiences than I had envisaged.

Uncle Sam listened patiently. When I finished, he asked one question, with a worried look: “How will you get this book out, and get people to read it?”

No easy answer. Research increasingly suggests declining interest in reading, especially among younger populations. I replied that I did what I could to make the book simple, anecdotal and relatable.

“I’m hoping,” I told Uncle Sam, “that young people would see something of themselves in my stories and the stories of others across a generational spectrum and from it, chart their own course.”

He didn’t seem fully persuaded, but he was in earnest for me – for us – to find a way.

How can one claim to be a journalist, for example, without reading Peter Enahoro’s You’ve Gotta Cry to Laugh, Babatunde Jose’s Walking a Tightrope or AladeOdunewu’s Allah De? Or even the more recent Battlelines: Adventures in Journalism and Politics by Olusegun Osoba, to mention a few?

What is in a book is the thing that might just change your life; but you’ll have to read it to find it. On that, deities whether in journalism, carpentry, medicine or the good old craft of fortune-telling, might agree.

Dangote Vs Tinubu: Who Wins As Mogul Launches Vicious Attack On Govt?

0

Africa’s Richest Man Aliko has expressed his most daring criticism of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration since the latter came to power on May 29, 2023.

The respected business mogul was recently named among the Economic Advisory team of President Tinubu, which also include his rival Abudulsamad Rabiu, the chief executive of BUA, Tony Elumelu of United Bank for Africa, amongst other top Nigerians.

Dangote’s appointment many insist was meant to pacify him after his embarrassment, in January this year, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over alleged forex scam involving the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN and some individuals and companies.

The Dangote Group is believed to be among the over 50 companies being investigated by the anti-graft commission over alleged money laundering under the embattled former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele.

Recall that some EFCC operatives stormed the company’s Lagos office four months ago demanding for documents to assist them in their investigations in the alleged forex deals involving the conglomerate. The incident, those close to the businessman told the magazine did not go down well with him “because Dangote considers himself as an establishment person” that cannot be touched due to his closeness to previous governments in the country.

Jim Obaze, the Special Investigator appointed by President Tinubu last year investigated billions of dollars allegedly allocated to Dangote and other companies under the Emefiele-led CBN. Obaze submitted his report to the president last December which former part of the evidence now being used by the anti-graft agency to prosecute the former CBN boss.

Barely four months after the EFCC raid on Dangote, close watchers of events in the country say the businessman “has broken” his silence “and attacked” the Tinubu administration for embarrassing him.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Annual General Meeting of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, the mogul criticized the administration for floating the naira, stating that many manufacturing companies have been hit by the policy.

The CBN floated the naira last year by merging the exchange rates in the official and parallel markets. The policy has destabilsied the naira, according to experts, who blamed the apex bank for the slide in the exchange rate of the naira against the American currency, Dollar.

The Nigerian currency is now exchange for at least N1,370 to the American green back.

Dangote appears not happy with the current exchange rate which he claimed has affected his businesses and other investors in the country.

According to him, the CBN policy has created huge mess in the economy so much so that manufacturers had not been able to pay dividends to their shareholders due to the loses they suffered.

He said, “The biggest mess created (by the government) was the devaluation of the naira from N460 to N1,400.”

As a result, he said, many manufacturers have incurred huge loses and “You can see that almost 97 per cent of companies in the food and beverage business, none of them will pay dividends this year. But we will try and get out of it.”

Those close to the administration of Tinubu has exposed the frosty relationship between the president and the Chairman of Dangote Group.

“The president is not happy that his 2023 presidential bid was not supported by the businessman. Considering that Dangote has benefited in no small way from Lagos where Tinubu is the ‘godfather’ the president expected reciprocity from Dangote when he contested against Atiku,” a source said on Thursday.

The businessman was alleged to have supported Atiku Abubakar for the presidency last year which Tinubu later won with Atiku coming a distant second.

“How can you be happy, the source said, “after supporting him to build one of the biggest refineries in the world in Lagos. That’s Dangote biggest investment so far. There was no way that could have been achieved without Tinubu’s support. Yet, this person stabbed you at the back when you made your biggest political move. It’s a stab on the back.”

Since Tinubu swept to power last year, Dangote has visited him at least twice in Aso Villa, Nigeria’s seat of power in a perceived effort to “mitigate” the perceived damage in his relationship with the president.

In one of such visits to ‘beg’ Tinubu, Dangote had accompanied Bill Gates in June 2023 to the Presidency, according to analysts who insist that it will be difficult for Dangote’s businesses to survive under a hostile government.

The mogul, accompanied by his close ally, Femi Otedola later met with President Tinubu in his Bourdillon, Ikoyi home on April 10, 2024 as part of the ongoing trouble shooting efforts by prominent Nigerians to mend fence between the duo, sources familiar with the controversy informed the magazine.

Despite Court Order, MultiChoice Remains Defiant, Hikes DSTV, GOTV Subscriptions

DSTV and GOTV

MultiChoice, owners of DSTV and GOTV Satellite, has disobeyed the order of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, CCPT, sitting in Abuja. It has brazenly hiked the subscription rates for its DStv and GOtv packages to further heighten the complains of its numerous subscribers.

The Court had ordered MultiChoice to restrain from increasing its Tariffs, but it has remain defiant by shunning this order.

The move by MultiChoice has, however, sparked outrage among Nigerians and its numerous subscribers, who feel betrayed by Multichoice’s disregard for the legal system and its customers’ interests.

The CCPT’s ruling had been hailed as a victory for consumers, who had protested the price hike citing economic hardship and the company’s failure to justify the increase, but the defiance of the court order by Multichoice raises questions about its commitment to ethical business practices and respect for the law.

The CCPT had granted an application for substituted service of the interim order, restraining Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited from its plan to increase tariffs on DStv and Gotv packages which have began.

The three-member tribunal, presided over by Saratu Shafii, granted the applicant’s motion, following allegations that officers of the pay-TV firm in Abuja office refused to receive service of the order and other court documents.

The applicant, Festus Onifade, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Wednesday that the CCPT bailiff alleged that one of the company’s top managers at the Abuja office said the documents should be channelled through their Lagos office, which is the headquarters.

The tribunal, therefore, granted the order of substituted service pursuant to Section 48 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, FCCPA, 2018 and Part N, Order 14 Rule 11(1) of the CCPT Rule, 2021.

Obi Replies Presidency, Umahi On Coastal Highway Project, Insists Not Priority, Says Inciting Accusations Divisive, Explains Demolition As Governor

0

The Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi has reacted to allegations of inciting from the Federal Government over his position that the trillions of Naira Coastal Highway Project is not a priority in today’s Nigeria.

Obi who insisted that his position on it remains said that allegations of his inciting the people are divisive actions to distract from the main issue he raised that such a project now will lead to loss of jobs and will increase hunger and spread poverty in a troubled land already.

He also said that priority should be put on internal roads first to move the economy.

The former Anambra State Governor also took time to react to the demolition which took place during his tenure and said the circumstances were different and wondered why they were not addressing the issue of poverty that is spreading like wildfire.

Below are Obi’s responses to the FG’s attack on him.

“It has come to my attention, and I strongly denounce the distortion of facts surrounding my actions and statements during my tenure as governor of Anambra State, particularly concerning the ongoing demolitions for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal super highway. I aim to address these issues directly, devoid of political rhetoric, to ensure clarity for all.

“Let me be unequivocal: during my governorship, I made it abundantly clear that all structures obstructing existing roads and lacking approval would be removed. The circulated video clearly stated this, and I only initiated removal when construction had already commenced. Any insinuation otherwise is a blatant misrepresentation of the truth. I challenge anyone to verify and show me where the demolished structures on existing roads or ongoing businesses were not encroaching on the road and built without government approval while I served as governor.

“To provide further clarity, consider concrete examples. I decisively demolished the Onitsha North local government headquarters situated on the only existing stadium, relocated, and built a brand new structure for the local government office away from the stadium. This action was necessary to restore the stadium to its original purpose as a sporting facility for the people. Subsequently, the stadium was rightfully named after the first owner of the first football club figure in Nigerian sports, Chuba Ikpeazu, as a tribute to our commitment to honoring our heroes.

“Similarly, the Onitsha South Stadium, the sole local playing ground for the community, was converted into a local government office. Recognizing the importance of recreational spaces, I reverted it to its original status by demolishing and relocating the local government office. I then renovated the stadium and renamed it after the longest-serving Green Eagles captain, Godwin Achebe.

“My actions were strategic, aiming to prioritize the repair and maintenance of existing infrastructure over projects that risked disruption and destruction. This approach aimed to safeguard the livelihoods of Nigerians and ensure the efficient use of resources.

“It’s crucial to clarify the false comparisons drawn between my actions on Brewery Road and the current coastal super highway project. I never proposed creating a new road that would disrupt existing structures. Instead, I focused on removing obstructions on existing roads to enhance accessibility and safety for all.

“The ongoing destruction and disruption of jobs and livelihoods associated with the Lagos-Calabar coastal road construction sharply contrasts with my administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure while minimizing adverse impacts on communities.

“Regarding allegations of incitement against the government, I firmly reject these unfounded accusations aimed at tarnishing my character. My focus is on fostering constructive dialogue and inclusivity, rather than engaging in divisive politics. Claims of incitement are baseless distractions. I advocate for unity and advancement, refusing to partake in reactionary politics. My commitment to serving with integrity remains steadfast, and I encourage all Nigerians to unite for a prosperous future.

“In conclusion, I stand by my record as governor and reject any attempts to distort the narrative for political gain. My commitment remains unwavering: to advocate for the rights and well-being of all Nigerians, ensuring that development initiatives prioritize the needs of the people.

CBN: Bank Customers Lament As Regulator Freezes 2m Accounts

0

Over two million bank accounts have been closed by the federal government in the first quarter of 2024, as a result of failure by owners to link such accounts with their National Identity Number, NIN, according to the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System, NIBSS.

The closure was in compliance with the directive from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN last December.

The magazine reported that the apex bank warned customers in a circular that all accounts not linked to BVN and NIN will be placed on “Post no debit or credit” effective April I, 2024.

The circular dated December 1, 2023, and addressed to all commercial, merchant, non-interest and payment service banks; as well as Other Financial Institutions, OFIs, and mobile money operators, was jointly signed by the CBN Director, Payments System Management Department, Chibuzo Efobi and Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Haruna Mustafa

The Yemi Cardoso-led bank had said the decision was part of the CBN efforts to promote financial system stability in the country.

In spite of the warning, the magazine learned that many bank customers failed to comply, a situation that has forced the closure of such accounts which have seized to be operational since April.

Some customers who spoke to The Source complained about the closure of their accounts. According to them, they expected that the deadline would be extended by the CBN, adding that they expected more than the three months timeline set by the apex bank.

Also, it was learned that many accounts that have now been rendered operational by the CBN were used to commit fraud by the owners, many of such accounts had been opened without BVN and NIN, according to sources in the apex bank.

Effective April 1, 2024 such accounts were not expected to record deposits, withdrawals, transfers or point-of-sale transactions.

Meanwhile, the NIBSS said in the report the number of inactive bank accounts grew to 19.7 million in March 2024 from 19.3 million in February.

LASG Discovers Partitioned 86 Rooms Beneath Dolphin Estate’s Bridge Where Occupants Pay N250,000 Per Annum

Dolphin Estates Bridge occupants

By Akinwale Kasali

The Lagos State Government is set to demolish not less than 86 Partitioned Apartments  measuring 10×10 and 12×10 on Lagos Island beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi.

It was gathered that the occupants of these apartments pay a whopping sum of N250,000 annually.

Making this disclosure is the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the discovery remains shocking to the Lagos State Government, which is set to demolish these rooms and return sanity to the area.

Wahab made this known on his X Handle (formerly Twitter), that all structures—including a container used for several illicit activities—had been successfully removed from beneath the Dolphin Estate bridge by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources’ enforcement squad.

“A total number of 86 rooms, partitioned into 10×10 and 12×10, and a container used for different illegal activities were discovered under the Dolphin Estate Bridge. They have all been removed by the enforcement team of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources”.

Also confirming this development is Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo Olu on Environment, who revealed that squatters from beneath the bridge towards Dolphin Estate in Ikoyi are currently being evicted over illegal settlement and environmental violations.

Rotimi-Akodu mentioned that 23 individuals were arrested during the eviction, which was carried out by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI.

“ Squatters dwelling under the bridge leading from inward Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi were evicted Tuesday, 30th of April, 2024 by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps LAGESC (aka KAI). These people created their illegal settlements under the bridge, thereby exposing the critical infrastructure to impending destruction. 23 persons have so far been arrested and MoE/KAI will continue to monitor the place. The law will take its course.

He also confirmed that the bridge has hitherto housed 86 rooms, partitioned into 10×10 and 12×10 with squatters paying an average rent of N250,000 per annum.

“Continuation of the removal of abode under Dolphin bridge. 11 more persons were arrested. It is important to note that wood materials were used to construct the shelters, some occupants used gas cylinders, and some had stored fuel for their generators, these are recipes for disaster,” he wrote.

Edo Fmr Deputy Gov, Philip Shuaibu, Plots Against PDP Candidate Ighodalo, Says Not Homeboy

Philip Shuaibu - Edo Deputy Governor

By Ayodele Oni

Former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, may have moved on in his political career following his unceremonious removal by the state House of Assembly as he resumed political meeting with Senatorial members.

During one of the meetings  at Irrua, Shuaibu advised leaders of the senatorial district  to think seriously before voting for a preferred candidate during the governorship election.

He stated that any governorship candidate that cannot speak or understand his dialect cannot govern the state.

Shaibu, who spoke ahead of the Edo 2024 governorship election, added that he would only support a “homeboy” to become the governor.

According to him, any candidate who needed the help of an interpreter did not qualify as a homeboy because of his inability to speak the dialect of the Edo people.

“Today, we have decided that a homeboy that we know will become the governor of Edo State. You already know that Edo born in Lagos State is not a homeboy.

“Is somebody who comes here with an interpreter a homeboy? So, if that is a minus it means we will look for a homeboy.”

Although Shaibu did not mention the particular candidate he was referring to, it was apparent that he was throwing a jibe at the governorship candidate of the PDP, Asue Ighodalo.

Ighodalo had drawn flaks from stakeholders in the state after he hired an interpreter to announce his intention to his kinsmen at a ward in Ewohimi, Esan South East Local Government Area of the state earlier.

Ighodalo was seen in a video when he met with his kinsmen during his campaign to secure the PDP ticket then, and he addressed the crowd in English Language to seek their support while an interpreter translated his words into the Esan dialect.
