Nnamdi Kanu’s Family Laments, Says: “Igbo Leaders Have Abandoned Him To His Fate”

By Akinwale Kasali

The family  of Nnamdi Kanu, detained  Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has expressed concern over his continued incarceration by the Nigerian Government.

The Family lamented that  Igbo Leaders have left Kanu  to languish in the detention.

In a Statement signed by Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the family further alleged that selfish politicians benefiting from the insecurity in the South East region of the country, are behind the continued incarceration of the embattled IPOB leader.

Reacting to the recent refusal of the Federal High Court in Abuja to grant Kanu bail pending the determination of the charges against him, the family, wondered why it had become so difficult for Igbo political elites and leaders to book an appointment for an audience with President Bola Tinubu to discuss the matter, nearly one year after this administration came to power.

“How is it that nobody among Igbo political leaders have reached President Tinubu to discuss Nnamdi Kanu’s release almost a year he came to power?

“Is it not deliberate? Have they not been gaining access to the President concerning other issues? It is a shame that Kanu is being punished for asking for the freedom of Ndigbo and the leaders have abandoned him to die in DSS custody.

“Kanu is terribly sick and nobody cares! His health is deteriorating everyday. He has not changed his clothes. Why has the Court continued to hold him at DSS custody instead of Correctional Centre?”

The family insisted that some people are benefiting from his continued incarceration hence the apparent apathy on the part of the political elite to engage the President for his release.

“Why can’t they go for his release if they truly love the South East? Something is definitely wrong somewhere. They are benefiting from his continued detention, and that is why they are not making any serious move to engage Mr President. Don’t forget that some people sponsored his abduction and extraordinary rendition.

“Why should he be abandoned for asking the freedom of Biafra? He didn’t take up arms against government but he was tagged a terrorist. Yet the same government is busy releasing terrorists from detention.”

The family has, however, vowed to expose the beneficiaries of their son’s continued incarceration and the insecurity in the South East region.

“Nobody dies with any secret. Very soon all those behind Kanu’s continued detention will be exposed. Those benefiting from the insecurity in the South East are the ones enjoying his continued stay in detention. But nothing lasts for ever. One day they will be out of power.”

The family said it was dismayed that Kanu, who assisted in getting justice for illegally detained inmates, has been left to suffer alone.

“Kanu has single-handedly funded the release of inmates from different tribes who were unjustly detained while he was at Kuje prison last time. Why should he be now abandoned to rot in DSS custody?.”

Kanu’s family said it wondered if the trial Judge, the Honourable Justice Binta Nyako, took time to go through the certified true copy of the Supreme Court judgement that referred the case back for trial, noting that the apex court stressed that the defendant’s initial bail ought not have been revoked.

According to the family, if truly the trial Judge had digested the Supreme Court’s judgement, she would not have refused the bail application.

Kanu’s family maintained that the IPOB leader “is never afraid of standing trial,” but regretted that “the conditions they subjected him to, do not guarantee justice.

“Why can’t they allow him to change his clothes? Why will they keep him in DSS custody for years instead of sending him to Kuje Correctional Centre where he can have access to his doctors?

“Has the Court bothered to know if its orders are obeyed by the DSS? The way Kanu is being humiliated and handled does not show fairness. The Court should not create the impression that its acting a script,” the statement further read.

Ondo Amotekun parade 17 Criminal Suspects

By Ayodele Oni

The South West Security Network, code name Amotekun, has foiled plan by a gang of armed robbers from Delta state to rob three banks in Ondo state.

The Commandant of the security outfit in the state, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Thursday in Akure while parading the suspects and others arrested in connection with various crimes.

Adeleye explained that “The gang of  seven man came all the way from Sapele, Delta State for the purpose of kidnapping, and robbery of a bank in Irele LGA.

“Six of them are at large, but we were able to apprehend the mastermind, who accommodated the robbers. We were equally able to get to the root of the target that they intended to kidnap to give the officers of Amotekun the feeling that it is mere robbery, whereas it was dual operation.

“The manhunt for the leader who escaped to Delta State is on. We are liaising with relevant government and security authorities to assist us in apprehending this runaway gang.

“The Intel available to us shows that they intend to rob three banks and kidnap the MD of a supermarket. Investigations showed that they liased with a staff of the supermarket who declined to join the group.

“Others are those who specialize in vandalization of critical government assets. They actually went with a trailer to load pipes meant for world bank financed water project and successfully offloaded them and our operatives followed them and apprehended them where they offloaded at a different location.

“This is in furtherance of the determination that our citizens live peacefully in Ondo State. We appeal to the public to continue to support us with timely and actionable information and we pledge to secure lives and properties in conjunction with other security agencies in Ondo State.”

Also paraded were 36 other suspects held for various offences.

Ramadan: Kebbi Flags-Off Distribution Of Over N12bn Assorted Grains

By Ayodele Oni

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has flagged-off the distribution of over N12bn assorted grains as Ramadan palliatives to the people of the state.

Speaking while launching the exercise in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, Idris warned distribution committees at all levels against any form of abnormalities.

He insisted that any government official found tampering with the distribution exercise would be severely dealt with to serve as deterrent to others.

A statement by Ahmed Idris, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, described the palliatives as an interim measure to bring succour to the general public, especially in the present economic predicament.

While assuring that his government remained  people’s administration, the governor said the gesture was in complement of his campaign promises.

Giving the breakdown of the distribution, Idris said the state’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) would receive 4,000 bags of rice and 3,400 bags of grains.

He added that teachers would receive 9,900 bags of rice and 9,500 bags of grains, while 1,000 bags of rice and 1,000 bags of grains would go to Islamic Scholars among others.

The governor pointed out that the current disbursement was fully sponsored by the state government, assuring that another batch of palliative was being expected from the federal government, adding “we have started receiving consignments from them.”

Idris observed that a sign of good leadership “is for leaders to be alive to their responsibilities. As a teacher and a unionist, my government don’t owe workers salaries, gratuity or death benefits.

“In the spirit of fairness and magnanimity, I have directed the payment of this month workers’ salaries from today, and I have already approved the payment of 2023/2024 leave grant for all categories workers.

“Workers are my constituency and teachers are my back, hence the need to do everything to protect their interests.”

The governor instructed that the palliatives should be distributed to all and sundry, irrespective of party affiliation, “because election is over, what remains now is governance and everybody will be carried along.”

General Olanrewaju Says Okuama Killings Could Snowball Into A Bigger Conflict If Not Properly Managed

By Akinwale Kasali

The killing of 16 Soldiers last weekend in Okuama, Delta State, has continued to generate controversy in the country.

But, former Minister of Communications, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju, retd, has warned that the situation should be properly managed and addressed, or else, it would snowball to a community warfare that can snowball into a bigger conflict in the region.

He added that non-state actors, who parade themselves as militants, should not be seen around crude oil pipelines in the name of security and protection in Nigeria.

Olanrewaju was a former General Officer Commanding, 3 Armoured Division of the Nigerian Army said: “That event in Okuama gives me an unsettled mind about events surrounding the nation’s high volumes of oil deposits in Western Delta. The consequences of collateral damages resulting from gang warfare between two warring communities of Okuama and Okoloba could lead to further serious consequences of collateral damages to our national assets as a result of this unwarranted conflict.

“I believe strongly that the federal government should reconsider a new security protection template for our oil rich region, not on a piecemeal basis but the entire oil belt in the country.

“I also have a strong feeling that non-state actors should be called their true identity and not dressed up nicely with a patronising name. They are militants, thugs, hoodlums and are not different from bandits. That is what they are. Their transition has always been from thuggery, militancy to terrorism. That was how Boko Haram started.

“The Okuoma community may signal a new build-up of community warfare that can snowball into a bigger conflict in the region. Who knows? It was Odi, Zaki Biam, now Okuama and Okoloba. This is a smoldering smoke that must be quenched as quickly as possible. The earlier the federal government steps in quickly and keeps the smoldering smoke down as fast as possible, the better in the oil region.

“My view as my committee suggested on Gen Abisoye’s NNPC’s Report still stands the test of time. The National Security Adviser, NSA and the Military High Command must come out with a new Creek defence plan and policy to include the crude oil zone, oil platform, the offshore assets and resources to support them by laws, regulations and the Constitution.

“ As a matter of digression, I have made the points that the so-called non-state actors cannot protect our oil pipelines for lack of total patriotism. The nation needs a national institution to protect our national assets. We need to apply capital punishment for offences relating to oil theft in the Niger Delta region and banditry around our mining states.

“The nation derives its revenues from these resources. This definition has to be made clear in our laws and the Constitution. Those soldiers must not die in vain.

“There is nowhere in the world where some sections of the society will be fighting unprotected military officers on peace mission. It is because of armed forces, as an institution, and police that Nigeria is still united. And for a set of people to gang up to cut, burn and kill military officers? It is not done and must not be allowed to be pushed under. Perpetrators must be fished out and punished.”

El Rufai’s Romance With Opposition Parties Triggers Suspicion Of Possible Dumping Of APC

Mallam Nasir El Rufai at SDP secretariat

By Ayodele Oni

A visit by immediate past Governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El Rufai to the National Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party, (SDP) in Abuja on Wednesday, has elicited mixed social media reactions.

Some of those that reacted to the visit were of the view that it must be connected to the 2027 General elections.

El Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory,(FCT) was nominated as a Minister by President Bola Tinubu, but did not receive the blessing of the Senate, which hid behind security to abort his clearance.

He, thereafter, announced that he was travelling out of the country to further his studies and has since faded from public glare.

His surprise visit to the National Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party in Abuja, however, is fuelling speculations that he may be preparing for surprises ahead of the next General Elections.

An informed source hinted that the former Governor, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) came on a consultation visit to the National Chairman of the SDP, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam.

According to the source, Gabam described El-Rufai as a friend with high political pedigree, adding that Nigeria needed transformational leaders like him.

The source hinted that El-Rufai was received by the members of the National Working Committee, (NWC) of the party.

El-Rufai has been paying consultation visits to some notable politicians across political parties in recent times.

Kamba Nigeria-Niger Republic Border

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Nigerian Customs Service on Thursday, March 21, 2024, reopened the strategic and all important Kamba Nigeria/Niger Republic Border post in Kebbi State, insisting however that the exportation of grains and other essential commodities through the route remains prohibited.

The newly appointed Comptroller of Kebbi Customs Command, Iheanacho Ernest Ojike said the  decision to reopen the border post is in line with the  directives of the Service Comptroller General Bashir Adewale ,adding that the resumption of business and other activities on the border post will engender a new beginning for economic growth and development in the country.

A statement issued by the Command’s Spokesperson, Mohammed Tajuddeen Salisu SPC ,however, warned that business activities capable of undermining the economic recovery efforts of the federal government and its national security interest will not be tolerated .

Comptroller Ojike noted that the primary reason for the reopening the border post is  to facilitate legitimate economic activities that have the potentials to impact positively on the Nigerian economy, cautioning that the reopening does not call for the importation of prohibited items that can undermine the economy and compromise National security.

The Comptroller assured that the service is committed to the promotion of commercial activities through strict adherence to the extant laws and regulations of the Nigerian Customs Service.

He therefore solicited the cooperation and understanding of all relevant stakeholders ,by way of properly declaring and paying appropriate duties to the federal government.

The Traditional Ruler of Kamba District Alhaji Mamuda Fana , who led other locals to the reopening ceremony, appreciated the Federal Government for the decision to reopen the border post ,which he described as the life wire of the people of Kamba .

According to the District Head ,about %80 of the economic activities of the people depend on cross- border transactions, pledging to work closely with the Customs Service to ride the border of the activities of smugglers and other criminal elements.

OPINION: Photoshopping Princess and The Perils of Manipulation

0
Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

The press has been unkind to Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales. I find it hard to understand why, of all the problems at this time, from the cost-of-living crisis to the war in Ukraine, and from the war in Gaza to the near total loss of trust in politicians, it is Kate’s unguarded photoshop moment on Mother’s Day, of all days, that is the obsession.

And there’s no better timeto catch the British press swooning with testosterone than when a member of the royal family trips. They go all out. Nothing smells like the scent of royal blood and the hounds spare no stone.

And so, it was last week that a number of newswire services recalled or stripped photoshopped images of Princess Kate and her three children from their dispatches. The kinder ones among the newspapers nailed every single offending spot on the photo with a red flag, labelling and listing the photographic infractions one by one.

Daily Mailcircled10 spots, with lengthy captions on what it described as Kate’s “pic scandal.” My heart bled for the Princess of Wales, but something deep inside kept saying, if this had been Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex and famous Witch of Windsor, it would have been worse. I can imagine that the most generous description from the Daily Mail stable, for example, would have been something like, “Meghan in epic scandal!”

But what’s the point of it, really? Since the outbreak of the so-called Kate pic scandal, I have been brooding over images that I see very often as DPs and also on some WhatsApp Status. I’m keeping myself to that microblogging site and the mainstream press. There’s no need to bother with Insta, probably the worst photographic crime scene since Joseph Niepce invented the camera.

Who is this?

I have seen DP posts not remotely resembling folks that I know in real life. In a number of these meticulously airbrushed DPs, these same less than averagely endowed folks look so fine, faces nicely chiseled, neckties in place, or necklines plunging, and every strand of hair in place with poses like somethingout ofVanity Fair. You cannot sometimes help but zoom in and look again.

My anecdotal experience suggests that normal people, especially normal young girls and women, have fabricated more Kate Middleton moments than they can count. I have seen folks who are fat–that word has been banned by the language police – looking incredibly slim on their profiles or those who are black or brown looking all fair and incredibly white.

I have also seen folks with ageing-borne wrinkles, birth marks or even a few blemishes or dimples in real life look breathtakingly flawless on their DPs. I have never stopped wondering what this digital filter is really all about.

If the Daily Mails of this world have to spotlight every single photoshopped celebrity image – never mind the millions of celebrity wannabes – God knows how many would be out of circulation or perhaps be standing trial in the court of public opinion along with the Princess of Wales.

I have shied away from digital makeover, not out of self-righteousness, but because I have accepted my flawsand physiological shortcomings as part of the gifts ofan imperfect earth life. Why do people go to extra lengths to makeover and then portray themselves in images that are not remotely who they are?

Of course, photo airbrushing didn’t start with the Princess of Wales or the folk in that DP who’s probably the aspirational version of the imageyou’re looking at right now.

Fakery industry

Joseph Stalin erased enemies like Nikolai Yezhov, who played a significant role in the Great Purge out of photographs because he thought doing so would wipe away the man’s memory from history. He didn’t quite succeed.

In the 2004 presidential campaign, opponents of John Kerry spliced his photograph and that of actress and anti-war activist Jane Fonda to discredit his war record. And, come to think of it, this same Daily and Sunday Mail that have been unforgiving of the Princess of Wales fell flat for the epic Kerry photo forgery!

Seven years later, an ultra-Jewish newspaper suspected of religious influence erased Hilary Clinton and Audrey Tomason from a Situation Room picture taken moments before President Barack Obama authorised the strike on Osama bin Laden. Here again, as in the Kerry pic scandal, the press was duped.

Of course, it’s not every time that something bad comes out of an awkward photo moment. In 2016, for example, King Abdallah of Saudi Arabia caused a minor sensation when he and his brother, Crown Prince Sultan, were photographed with women without their faces covered.

They would havebeen pleased to paya million riyal to plug a leak or scrub it if they had known beforehand. The ticking photo-bomb was released only for a government official to defuse it the next day by simply saying the photo showed that, “It was OK to work with women!”

Does it matter?

Back to the question: why do people manipulate photos? Studies have suggested a number of reasons. A study by BMC Psychology last April suggested that reasons for image-manipulation or photoshopping are rooted in self-objectification where individuals involved are keenly aware of, even sometimes obsessed by, their physical looks, which tends to affect everything, including their sense of self-esteem.

The higher the investment in social media, the higher the tendency to use tools, including photoshop and other image-filtering apps, to look incredibly, yet quite often, deceptively, good. But that’s the modern playground, the place where billions work and move and define their being.

The domain is not limited to royalty. Obsession to twist, scrub and bend things from their essence as sacrifice on the altar of the post-modern self is just as widespread in royalty as it is in fashion, journalism, marketing and politics. And the realm is getting larger and larger because increasingly the only thing that matters, that is rewarded and celebrated, is success. Everything else is judged harshly.

The art of it

There is of course also the ethical question of boundaries. While there are those who argue that image-alteration is a form of art which has produced such geniuses as Erik Johansson or Rosie Hardy, for example, there are others who take the view – and I agree – that unethical retouching can contribute to body image issues, especially among young people, fostering feelings of inadequacy and insecurity.

To encourage authenticity and hopefully slowly create a society where people are not ashamed – or afraid – to be who they are, perhaps we need to be less severe and more forgiving and transparent when we scrub those images. And yes, we must also learn to take ourselves a lot less seriously.

We may not yet look like the Madonna we wanted to be, but at least we can go to bed satisfied that we have paid our two cents to createa healthier, more responsible visual landscape.

OPINION:  Akpabio’s House Is Falling

0

By Abraham Amah

When Abdul Ningi, Senator representing Bauchi Central in the Senate made a scoop of his discovery of alleged N2.7tn padding in the 2024 national budget to the Hausa Service of the BBC, little did he know that he was embarking on a one-man coup plot that would land him in hot soup. The scoop did not edify him before his colleagues because many of them turned their back against him for laying bare their filthy lucre before Nigerians but it also further ruptured the roof of Godswill Akpabio’s Senate that is already leaking.

The story is that Ningi had approached Akpabio in the company of a few Senators and availed him of information which showed that the country was operating a different budget from the one passed by the National Assembly, a discovery he made after he engaged an independent auditor to scrutinise the budget, apparently after he had observed some discrepancies. According to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Abdul Ningi failed to show him full details of his discovery before going to the BBC and that was the sin that earned him a three-month suspension.

Following Ningi’s scoop, more damaging revelations about Akpabio’s filthy house came to the fore when Senator Jarigbe from Cross River disclosed on the floor of the Senate that some Senators received N500m each for projects, which he did not receive.…..before his microphone went off. This is the third time Akpabio is having an illicit romance with microphone. After a series of denials, it took the face-saving intervention of Senate Leader Bamidle Opeyemi to tell Nigerians that Senators actually received as much N500m for Constituency Projects; a meaningless lexicon which has been used by the Senate to fritter public funds since it found its way into Nigeria’s budgeting process.

Reminiscent of George Orwell’s 1945 Animal Farm, the Napoleon of our Senate, Senator Ali Ndume proclaimed and boasted to Nigerians that ‘all animals are equal but some are more equal than others because he received N1b for Constituency Projects. Unknown to Ali Ndume, his paltry N1b is money for meat pie in Mr. Biggs when compared with Godswill Akpabio’s Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district which had a whopping N25b earmarked for it for sundry Constituency projects including N2.5b to be used for the provision of deep freezers and generators as part of women empowerment for ten local government areas and N500m for the installation of solar street lights.

The uncommon governor of Akwa Ibom State who did uncommon things to change the face of Akwa Ibom where he was governor for eight years, Godswill Akpabio as Senate President has continued to display uncommon callousness and recklessness in running the Senate since he became its President in June 2023. Gaffe after gaffe, Akpabio has consistently shown Nigerians that he is not fit to be a Senator, much more, the presiding officer of the once hallowed Chamber which has turned into an institutional ridicule and embarrassment not just to itself but to Nigerians as well.

The first sign of Akpabio’s unruly conduct was his nonchalant display of insensitivity with the ‘let the poor breathe’ joke in the heat of the crushing hardship this government led Nigerians into in the early days of this administration. Unmindful of the fact that a society’s worth is measured not by how it protects the strong but the way it protects the vulnerable, Akpabio sent N20m to Senator’s bank accounts for their recess when millions of Nigerians are languishing in poverty, with more millions unable to afford a meal a day.

The N20m was sent to each Senator’s mailbox according to Akpabio after his Senate had shared a whooping N70b with members of the House of Representatives to retrofit their offices and wardrobes even when everything in Nigeria was going down and all the economic indices were showing negative. Worst of all, that was the first loan borrowed by the Bola Tinubu government to assuage the hellish impact of the fuel subsidy removal that kickstarted the present economic downturn that seems irreversible.

Akpabio’s litany of misdemeanour reeks of incompetence, inexperience and insensitivity to the challenges facing Nigeria at the moment. In handing an illegal three-month suspension to Senator Abdul Ningi without passing through the established process of trial and fair hearing by the Senate’s Ethics and Privileges Committee, Akpabio has simply shown that he is power drunk and incapable of moderating a legislature that should be the backbone of a country in search of a new/ beginning to give hope and succour to the millions of people who wallow in despair.

Lacking in the historical knowledge of the house he superintends, Akpabio is gradually digging holes in the already shaken foundation of the Senate that would bring down the house in no distant time. The Senate Rule in Order 67 (4) is very clear that a member should not be suspended for more than 14 days after it has referred the matter to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for trial and recommendation. In recent history, the Senate has always made a jest of itself by not following appropriate measures to discipline its erring members because the courts have reversed all the suspensions on Senators.

Under Akpabio’s watch, the Senate has come under very embarrassing moments, caused not by outsiders but through the words of its leader, a man who speaks before he thinks. It is difficult to reconcile Akpabio’s political immaturity with the high level political positions he has occupied in Nigeria; commissioner, governor, minister and now Senate President. As governor, he publicly said he was giving hungry PDP chairmen N1m each for lunch in Mr. Biggs in the presence of PDP National Chairman Bamanga Tukur, publicly claimed to have rigged election in favour of a Senatorial candidate in the presence of Minister of Information Labaran Maku and capped it up with “what money cannot do, too much money can do” in veiled reference to his uncanny ability to buy over political opponents.

During the burial of late Herbert Wigwe in Isiokpo a fortnight ago, Akpabio turned the solemn occasion into a political comic and made a misadventure of himself when he attacked Governor Governor Sim Fubara after he had done so during another occasion and asked the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to replace Sim Fubara with someone from Ogoni. In the height of the recent massacre of 16 soldiers in Okuama in Delta State, Senate President was quick to exonerate the people of Niger Delta as the killers even before a full scale investigation is conducted.

Godswill Akpabio represents a new low in Nigeria’s political leadership and the Senate he leads is quite unrepresentative of the yearnings and aspirations of the majority of Nigerians that look up to it for good governance. Unfortunately, a very few Senators are exempt from this assault on the intelligence of Nigerians as all of them are in cahoots with the shenanigans of Akpabio, otherwise they would have called him to order. More worrisome is the fact the other Principal leaders of the Senate do not represent a different aspiration.

Efforts by Opeyemi Bamidele to reduce Abdul Ningi’s scoop to a coup plot to feather ethnic nest, is to say the least unintelligent and uninspiring because the budget padding is actually a crime against all Nigerians. In the words of Bill Clinton, “the road to tyranny, we must admit, begins with the destruction of the truth.” The Senate needs to do a self evaluation of itself and begin to reinvent itself to serve the purpose it is meant to serve. Under the present leadership, the Senate is self-serving and until the person of Godswill Akpabio is shoved aside, the house would fall before it runs through its first year. It has already started falling.

The Kano State  Government has assured that Children with Disabilities CWD will be  guaranteed access to qualitative education, and  conducive learning environment across the state .
