The House of Representatives has offered clarification on the reconstitution of the ad hoc committee on oil and gas investigation. It said it was to ensure efficacy, Independence and effectiveness of the investigation.

A statement by the spokesman of  the House, Akin Rotimi Jnr, on Wednesday, explained that the leadership decided to dissolve the Committee in line with laid down rules guiding the house.

“The House of Representatives has observed, with consternation, the speculations in some sections of the media following the dissolution of the Ad Hoc Committee on Oil and Gas by the leadership of the House.

“It is necessary to clarify that the action by the leadership was to ensure efficacy, independence, and effectiveness of the investigation.

“Appallingly, some people went to town with speculations regarding the action of the leadership, with some making allegations of a rift between the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, while others alleged that there was an inducement for the appointment of a committee chairman.

“The House of Representatives, therefore, wishes to clarify as follows: That the House has its internal working mechanisms, which are enabled by Section 60 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which provides that ‘Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, the Senate or the House of Representatives shall have power to regulate its own procedure, including the procedure for summoning and recess of the House.’

“That the leadership of the House reserves the right to disband/dissolve an ad hoc committee whenever the need arises; that the action taken by the House to dissolve the Ad Hoc Committee on Oil and Gas Investigation did not contravene any rule of the House or any law of the land.”

The statement stated that at no time did the House leadership or anybody for that matter received inducement for the appointment of any committee chairman.

“It was an assignment diligently executed by the Selection Committee of the House between June and July 2023, which has a member from each of the states of the federation.

“There is no rift whatsoever between the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker regarding this or any matter; the duo enjoys a robust and cordial relationship. The two Presiding Officers also have mutual respect for each other, and will not allow anything to come between them.”

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three persons for, allegedly, operating a fake Office of the Kogi State First Lady.

The Police explained that the suspects fraudulently used the name and office of the state’s First Lady, Sefinat Usman-Ododo, to deceive local residents.

They also allegedly printed letter heads paper and fake empowerment programme forms with which they rip off innocent members of the public

According to SP Williams Ovye-Aya, the command’s spokesperson, the suspects, whose names have not been disclosed, are in custody of the Police Quick Response Unit.

The suspects are alleged to have printed and sold fraudulent forms for a non-existent empowerment programme under the guise of the Kogi State Cooperative Federation of Nigeria.

They misled the public by presenting the scheme as an initiative from the First Lady’s office.

The arrests took place in Lokoja on Tuesday after an undercover agent purchased one of the fake forms.

The police revealed that detectives have launched a full investigation into the matter, with plans to prosecute the suspects upon the completion of their inquiries.

Beggars in Abia State

As part of its efforts to restore sanity to Aba, its Commercial hub, the Abia State  Government has evacuated the  street beggars occupying the Bata Junction along Aba- Owerri.

The Source reports that in recent times, some  major roads and streets in the commercial nerve centre of the State had been taken over by street beggars, most of whom are strongly believed to be aliens from neighboring countries.

Their  activities constituted great nuisance to residents who are always clobbered and surrounded by teens  soliciting alms, while their supposed parents, able bodied, sit idly by the road side.

In their numbers, they dot major places like the ever busy Aba/ Owerri road, and others.

A statement issued and made available to The Source by the Coordinator of Aba Zone of Abia State Harmonized Task  Force, Chief Uche Wogu, on Wednesday August 7, 2024 said the beggars at Bata junction, along Aba/Owerri Road have been evacuated.

The Harmonized Task Force is also charged with the ongoing evacuation of street traders and other illegal road side business operators in the State.

The evacuation of the beggars, according to the statement, was personally led by Chief Nwogu, who is also the Mayor of Aba South Council.

“The Taskforce team led by the Mayor of Aba South, Uche Wogu, the Deputy Mayor, Nkiru Ugwu, Immigration Officers, led by Okoronkwo Jessy, as well as members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC,  evacuated more than 50 beggars today (Tuesday August 6) ”

The beggars Chief Wogu noted include Abians,  Akwa Ibomites, some Northerners and Niger Republic citizens.

He informed that those from Niger Republic will be handed over to the Immigrations, while the others will be taken to the Umuahia Rehabilitation Centre.

The statement also noted that some of the beggars from the Northern part of the country have been handed over to the Chief Imam of the Hausa Community in Aba, Idris Bashir.

The family of Legendary Musician and Actress, Onyeka Onwenu, has announced that the award winning artists will buried by August ending.

This was disclosed by the family while receiving a team  from the Musical Society of Nigeria, MCSN, who paid  a condolence visit at the Ikoyi, Lagos residence of the late singer.

The MCSN delegate led by Orits Wiliki, Chairman, Board of Trustees of MCSN, met with Onwenu’s sons, Abram and Tjiani. Both sons  expressed their intention to respect their late mother’s wishes by committing her remains to  mother earth as soon as possible.

According to them, the burial arrangement would be announced in the coming days.

It would be recalled that Onwenu died last Tuesday after performing at the 80th Birthday Celebration of the Chief Executive Officer of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Chief Stella Okoli. She slumped on her seat after her performance.

She was rushed to Reddington Hospital where she eventually passed on after  efforts to save her life.

The late singer in a published piece in Premium Times,  2021, emphasized that her burial should be devoid of unnecessary fanfare.

“Do it quickly, quietly and privately. Mourn, yes but not excessively. Celebrate me with prayers, lunch or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh,” Onwenu was quoted as saying back then.

South West Youth Group Kicks Against Exclusion From Summit, Demands Sack Of Minister

Dr Jamila Ibrahim

By Ayodele Oni

Some aggrieved youths in South West have accused the Minister of Youths, Dr Jamila Ibrahim of non performance and urged President Bola Tinubu to sack her.

Apparently angered by their non invitation to a youth Summit programme for South West, which was held in Akure, Ondo state on Tuesday, the group, under the South West Youth Action Network, noted that Jamila’s role is crucial in shaping policies that should empower the youth and address their concerns.

A statement, signed by Kayode Seun, Coordinator of the group, stated that

“…she has effectively surrendered the Ministry to ineffectiveness. Her lack of effective communication and engagement with young Nigerians has been glaring.

“Dr. Jamila, who is a product of the ruling class lacks the understanding of the poor people of Nigeria nor the lofty visions of her young people.

“Reports indicate that instead of spearheading initiatives that resonate with the aspirations of the youth, she has been predominantly absent from major dialogues, leaving young people feeling marginalized and unheard.

“In recent months, Nigeria has witnessed a surge in unrest, with the voices of the youth echoing across the nation for change and accountability.

“At the forefront of the causal effect leading to unrest is the Hon. Minister of Youths, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim, whose actions and decisions have increasingly come under scrutiny. It is clear that her tenure is not just underwhelming but detrimental to the interests of Nigerian youth and overall governance.

“The idea that she is performing below expectations makes it justifiable in the interest of Nigerian youths, It is time to say, “#JamilaMUSTGO.”

“This disengagement has fostered frustration and disillusionment within the youth demographic, fueling unrest across various regions. The current protest could have been averted or reduced to the bearest minimum with an effective youth minister who better understands the plight of young people.

“Furthermore, her controversial policies, perceived as out of touch with the realities faced by Nigerian youth, have only exacerbated the situation.

“Many of her initiatives lack transparency and meaningful input from the people they are supposed to serve. The mere thought that a meager few is selected for her proposed Southwest programme in Ondo State further shows the lack of insight.

“This top-down approach has not only caused a rift between the youths and the government but has also cast a shadow over the Tinubu administration’s commitment to inclusivity and progress.

“Dr. Jamila’s inaction in addressing pressing issues such as unemployment, lack of access to education, and youth empowerment. Her inability to implement substantial programmes that offer real solutions has left many young Nigerians frustrated and hopeless.

“That the renewed hope is now gradually looking like rocket science and mirage. The current unrest is a reflection of this accumulated dissatisfaction, and as the Minister, her failure to act decisively compounds the issues.

“An effective leader must inspire confidence and foster positive change. Unfortunately, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim’s tenure has instead become synonymous with disappointment and discontent. The continued unrest serves as a direct indictment of her leadership and its impact on the Tinubu administration’s credibility.

“As Nigeria moves forward, it is critical that leadership reflects the needs and aspirations of the people, particularly the youth. Consequently, we are announcing and calling for Dr. Jamila Ibrahim to step down. It is not just a critique of her individual actions but a broader demand for a better direction that resonates with the hopes of a nation yearning for change. For the sake of Nigeria’s future, #JamilaMUSTGO.”

Presidency Says Security Agencies On Course In Handling Protests, Commends Their Patriotism

Bayo Onanuga

By Ayodele Oni

The presidency has said that handling of the ongoing nationwide Protests by security agents deserves commendation, and not condemnation as observed by presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga in a statement, advised Atiku that  “As a statesman, his warning ought to have been issued to the looting mob in Kaduna, Kano, Plateau, Jigawa states, who hijacked what was advertised by organisers as a peaceful protest.

“Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar this evening tweeted the absurd, warning security agencies against using lethal force against looters and arsonists who masqueraded as protesters.

“Our security forces have remained professional and even-handed and observed every restraint in the face of extreme provocation by the rioters.

“We are surprised that Alhaji Atiku is still relying on Section 40 of our constitution (as amended) to justify a protest that is now clearly a riot, a rampage in some parts of the country.

“Section 45 of the constitution says the right of assembly and freedom of expression are not absolute rights. They can be abridged and fettered in the interest of public peace, safety, law, and order.

“The Service Chiefs reiterated the rights of Nigerians to protest and gather freely. They, however, reinforced their constitutional duty today when they said they can not sit by idly and watch hoodlums destroy the country and its democracy.

“The Service Chiefs, officers, and men of our security outfits should be commended for their patriotic duty to our country.

“As a supporter and enabler of the destructive ‘protests,’ Alhaji Atiku wants the sinister protests to continue despite the street’s red signals. A tweet that condones the destruction of private and public property and citizens’ investments is unexpected from a former vice president of Nigeria.

“Alhaji Atiku ought to have risen above the sentiment he expressed and put the interest of our country’s stability ahead of whatever advantages he hoped to reap from the insurrection on our streets.

“We encourage Alhaji Atiku to adopt a more nationalistic approach that transcends personal interests and focuses on the greater good of our nation.

“He should take a cue from opposition figures in the United Kingdom who have rallied behind the government to condemn the ongoing riots in the UK, calling for the arrest and prosecution of those behind the wanton destruction of public and private assets.

“Such a nationalistic temperament, as displayed by opposition figures such as  Rishi Sunak, the immediate past Prime Minister of the UK, is expected of Alhaji Atiku.

“If Alhaji Atiku had followed this approach, he would have given hope for a united front against the destructive protests.”

Hunger Protests: We Mistakenly Shot Dead Teenager, Says Army

Lt General Taoheed Lagbaja

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a protester in Zaira, Kaduna State. The victim’s name, according to the Army is 16-year-old boy, Ismail Mohammed.

The NA spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement on Tuesday said the teenager’s death resulted from troops firing a warning shot to deter hoodlums and enforce the curfew imposed by the state government.

Explaining how the boy was killed, Nwachukwu, said the troops received a distress call reporting that a large group of hoodlums had gathered in Samaru, burning tyres on the road and pelting stones at security personnel.

The troops, according to him, were immediately mobilised and arrived at the scene to disperse the mob and enforce the curfew imposed by the state government.

On arrival “the hoodlums brazenly attempted attacking the troops prompting a soldier to fire” leading to the boy’s death.

The spokesman said the Army is saddened by the event, noting that the Chief of Army Staff, COAS has sent delegation to the family of the deceased to commiserate with them.

According to him, “On arrival at the scene, the hoodlums brazenly attempted attacking the troops prompting a soldier to fire a warning shot to scare the hoodlums away, which unfortunately led to the death of a 16 years old boy, Ismail Mohammed.

“Saddened by the unfortunate incident, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has sent a high-powered delegation led by the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Maj Gen Lander Saraso, to visit and condole with the family of the deceased.”

“The deceased was buried according to Islamic rites with senior military officers of the Nigerian Army in attendance,” he said

The unfortunate incident came after  the Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa warned that the military will be forced to use force to quell the ongoing hardship and hunger protests across the country.

Not a few Nigerians have criticised the security agencies for using excessive force against the #endbadgovernance protest which has entered the seventh day on Wednesday.

For instance, Amnesty International at the weekend condemned Nigeria’s security forces for killing some protesters in some parts of the country where the protest is taking place.

Also, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had called out the security forces for killing and using disproportionate force against protesters, saying they have committed crime against humanity, which they will be made to account sooner than later.

”I wish to convey a stern caution to the distinguished service chiefs and military commanders of Nigeria’s armed forces that those who authorise the use of lethal force against peaceful civilian protesters will be held responsible for committing crimes against humanity, even in the years following their retirement from service.

“The constitutional right to engage in protest is firmly established within our supreme law and reinforced by the judiciary. It is the solemn duty of the government and security agencies to ensure a safe and protected environment for individuals exercising their right to peaceful protest,’ Atiku said on his X handle.

Violent Protests: Tinubu Calls On Atiku To Rally Behind Govt

Atiku Abubakar, former Nigerian Vice President has been advised to support the federal government in its efforts to stop the ongoing hunger protest in the country.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave the advise in a statement signed by his Special adviser on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga on Tuesday. The statement was posted on Onanuga’s verified X handle.

The magazine reported that protests have continued for seven days across the country  among Nigerians who are demanding a solution to the current economic hardship in the country.

The protests tagged #endbadgovernance has turned violence in some northern states, as security agencies vow to use force to quell the riots.

Recall that Abubakar, the 2023 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has warned security agencies against using excessive force to stop the protesters, saying the military and other security personnel who kill protesters will be made to account for their actions for comitting crime against humanity.

Reacting to Atiku’s remark, President Tinubu said the former vice president should support him to ensure that the country is not hijacked by some elements who have hijacked the protest.

According to the statement, Atiku should conduct himself as a statesman, and stop being driven by personal gains in the interest of the country.

Below the statement:

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar this evening tweeted the absurd, warning security agencies against using lethal force against looters and arsonists who masqueraded as protesters. As a statesman, his warning ought to have been issued to the looting mob in Kaduna, Kano, Plateau, Jigawa states, who hijacked what was advertised by organisers as a peaceful protest.

Tinubu Appoints 2 Ex-Govs Into TETFund Board

0
Aminu Masari

President Bola Tinubu has appointed two former governors into the newly constituted board of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund.

The former governors are Aminu Masari, a former governor of Katsina, and Saminu Turaki, a former governor of Jigawa state.

Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, made the announcement in statement issued on Tuesday, saying Masari will chair a seven-member TETFund board named by the president.

Other members of the board members are Sani Danladi, a former senator representing the Taraba North senatorial district, Sunday Adepoju, former postmaster general of the Nigeria Postal Service, NIPOST.

The board members also include Nurudeen Adeyemi, Esther Onyinyechukwu Ukachukwu, and Aboh Eduyok.

TETFUND was established in 2011 to monitor the disbursement of education tax to government-owned tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

It provides supplementary support to public tertiary institutions as infrastructure, staff training, and research funding among others.

The fund’s main revenue source is the three percent education tax paid from the assessable profit of companies registered in Nigeria.

The Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) collects the tax on behalf of the fund.

Recall that Masari, the imediate past governor of Katsina state was a staunch supporter of President Tinubu’s bid for the presidency in 2023.

Meanwhile, the President had nominated Badamasi Lawal as Chief Executive Officer, National Social Investment Programme Agency, NSIPA.

The appointee replaces Halima Shehu, who was suspended in January over corruption related issues, and his appointment is expected to be confirmed by the Nigerian Senate.
