Protest: Governor Mutfwang Pleads, Says Plot To Hijack, Disrupt, Cause Violence Thickens

0
Caleb Mutfwang - Plateau state Governor

By Akinwale Kasali

As the #EndBadGovernance Protest enters day seven, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has revealed plans by mischief makers to hijack the peaceful protest, by causing violence and wreaking havoc in the State.

The Governor stated that intelligence reports has it that hoodlums from neighbouring States are being sponsored to  cause violence in the State and cause unnecessary unrest.

Mutfwang added that the hoodlums are hiding under the guise of the protest to perpetrate their evil plots.

In a State-wide broadcast on Tuesday morning, the Governor insisted that merchants of violence are not happy about the peace the State is enjoying, and are infiltrating the peaceful exercise to cause chaos.

Mutfwang highlighted some of the steps his administration is taking to mitigate hardship, promised to meet with leaders of youth groups for dialogue, and commended stakeholders’ roles in containing the activities of the hoodlums who looted shops and attacked innocent citizens.

His words:“… I am grateful for this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all of you for your understanding and dignified conduct over the last couple of days during the ongoing national protest tagged #endbadgovernance.

“Since the commencement of your constitutionally guaranteed right of protest, you have demonstrated, to the admiration of other Nigerians and even the international community, that the glorious days of the beautiful and peaceful Plateau are back…

“I am more grateful that the message we have been preaching of acceptance and mutual respect towards one another has sunk in. I am glad we have decided to live as brothers because that is who we are, irrespective of our diversity

“While we have taken measures to create a peaceful and prosperous Plateau, we must admit there is still much to be done. Our efforts in public transportation, investments in agriculture – including training 20 youths per local government in modern agribusiness – improvements in the health and education sectors, etc., have all been geared towards laying the foundation for poverty alleviation.”

He added: “We gave out over 200 trucks of fertilizer and other palliatives in conjunction with the Federal Government. We are very hopeful that we shall reap a bumper harvest this season, which will go a long way in providing food security.

“We have started the empowerment of several Plateau State citizens with a token of N50,000 through the Plateau State Microfinance Development Agency (PLASMIDA), which is aimed at supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

“The gesture was to ensure measurable improvement to the quality of life of MSMEs in the State by providing business development support to indigent persons. I assure you that we will sustain and improve on this intervention.

“I am passionate about ensuring that no one living on the Plateau goes to bed without food, no child is condemned to illiteracy because their parents cannot afford to pay their school fees, and no one dies prematurely because they cannot afford to pay their medical bills.

“For these reasons, we have invested in technology to address the orchestrated distractions of insecurity, banditry, and insurgency, distractions which have significantly strengthened our common and major enemy – poverty…”

On the protest, he stressed: “I have heard you clearly, and we are in this together. I, therefore, appeal to you to stay further protests so we can dialogue with your leaders to add value to our thinking and plans for poverty alleviation since we do not possess a monopoly of wisdom. As soon as the protests are over, we shall meet with the leaders of the youth groups across the state for further dialogue.

“The more we continue with the protests, the more the likelihood of being hijacked by sponsored criminals and hoodlums like we began to notice from Sunday evening.

“Based on the intelligence at our disposal, we know the lawful protests have been infiltrated by criminals who were waiting for an opportunity to loot shops, attack and rob innocent citizens of their hard-earned belongings.

“We even saw the display of foreign flags by some of these criminally minded intruders. So as a responsible Government, we had to take proactive steps to prevent further acts of criminality; thus, the 24-hour curfew we imposed on Jos-Bukuru metropolis starting from Sunday midnight.”

Mutfwang noted: “The resistance by hoodlums in some parts of the Jos North area from Monday morning till late afternoon proves that our action of imposing the curfew is justified. Credible sources have revealed that because of the peace that Plateau is enjoying, merchants of violence invited hoodlums from neighbouring states to disrupt the peace in Jos.

“Let me appreciate our traditional, community, and religious leaders, as well as civil society organizations who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to assuage the justifiable anger and frustrations of the protesters. We urge you not to rest on your oars until normalcy is restored so we can take more reassuring steps in the right direction.”

Alex Otti - Governor of Abia State

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Abia State Government has vowed to recover over 180 public educational institutions illegally ceded to private individuals and entities by the previous administration.

It has, also, informed that no fewer than 12,000 teachers in public schools are to undergo refresher trainings to prepare them for the task of rebuilding the system.

Rising from an Executive Council Meeting Monday evening, August 5, 2024, the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kalu, announced that a Committee has been set up to oversee the recovery efforts.

The Source reports that the immediate past regime had allotted a large chunk of public schools to private persons mostly political cronies, friends and family members and faith-based organizations.

The allottees  have since gone ahead to erect varying structures, including malls and business concerns ,despite public outcry.

The development has sadly resulted in a monumental deficit in the education sector, with thousands of children of the poor unable to access education.

The Commissioner for Information warned that the State Government will no longer tolerate the unbridled greed and impunity of a few privileged people, with the penchant to illegally appropriate the common wealth.

The State Government, Prince Kalu maintained, stands in total condemnation of the surreptitious take-over of  public properties and lands belonging to Government schools.

Similarly, the State authorities expressed displeasure with the misuse of public schools handed over to organizations, including Churches, insisting that the public facilities must be used for their real purposes.

Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Governor Alex Otti’s Chief of Staff, is at the Head of the recovery Committee.

Other members are Education Commissioner, Prof Uche Ume Uche, Commissioners for Justice, Land and Housing, Local Government/Chieftaincy Affairs and Heads of Aba Greater Development Authority GADA and Umuahia Capital Development Authority, as well as the Chief Security Officer to the Governor.

Prince Kalu said the decision to organize the retraining programme for the teachers is sequel to an assessment of the sector.

He noted that the teachers will participate in the capacity-building programme during the summer to prepare them for the task of handling the recently restructured and remodeled public schools.

Olugbenga Edema

By Ayodele Oni

Governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, (NNPP)  Olugbenga Edema has asked Ondo state Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa to give account of funds and palliatives received so far from the federal government.

The NNDP Campaign Organisation, alleged that there is lack of transparency in the distribution of rice by Governor Aiyedatiwa.

In a statement, signed by its spokesman, Ayeni Oluwatosin,  condemned Governor  Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State for his lack of transparency and accountability in the distribution of rice and other palliatives provided by the federal government.

“Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision to run Ondo State as a personal enterprise rather than in the interest of the good people of the state is unacceptable and goes against the principles of good governance.

“With the evidence at our disposal, Governor Aiyedatiwa has allocated the rice and palliatives received from the Federal Government as exclusive benefits for members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Governor Aiyedatiwa is using them as tools to further his personal agenda.

“These funds and palliatives belong to the masses and are intended to alleviate the hardship caused by the All Progressives Congress-led administration in the country, not to serve the interests of a particular political party.

“One would begin to imagine what happened to the funds released to the state by the federal government, particularly when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his speech on August 4, disclosed that his administration has released over N570 billion to the 36 states to expand livelihood support to citizens across the country.

“So, Governor Aiyedatiwa must tell the people of Ondo State what happened to their own share.

“The Olugbenga Edema Campaign Organisation demands that Governor Aiyedatiwa give a full and transparent account of all public funds and palliatives received from the Federal Government.

“These resources are meant to benefit all residents of Ondo State, regardless of their political affiliation, and should be distributed equitably to alleviate the suffering of the people.

“It is imperative that Governor Aiyedatiwa understand that public funds are not to be used for personal gain or political advantage but are meant to serve the greater good of the people.

“The people of Ondo State deserve a leader who prioritizes their welfare and acts in the best interests of all citizens, without discrimination or favouritism.

“We call on Governor Aiyedatiwa to immediately rectify this situation and ensure transparency in the distribution of public resources.

“The Olugbenga Edema Campaign Organisation stands with the people of Ondo State in demanding accountability and transparency in the entire process.”

In an apparent bid to escape liquidation axe being dangled by the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN) on financial institutions in the country, two banks have agreed to merge.

Details of the merging agreement are still sketchy but the CBN on Tuesday confirmed the approval for a pivotal financial accommodation to support the proposed merger between Unity Bank Plc and the Providus Bank Limited.

The apex bank, in a statement by its acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali, said the move is designed to bolster the stability of the nation’s financial system and avert potential systemic risks.

“The merger is contingent upon the financial support from the CBN. The fund will be instrumental in addressing Unity Bank’s total obligations to the Central Bank and other stakeholders.

“It is unequivocal to state that the CBN’s action is under the provisions of Section 42 (2) of the CBN Act, 2007. This arrangement is crucial for the financial health and operational stability of the post-merger organisation.

“It is important to emphasise that no Nigerian bank currently faces a precarious situation comparable to that of Heritage Bank, which was recently liquidated.”

The CBN assured that it remains committed to safeguarding depositors’ interests and ensuring the smooth functioning of the banking sector through proactive measures and strategic interventions.

Senator Ali Ndume Meets APC Leadership

By Ayodele Oni

The Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume has finally met the leadership of the rulling All Progressives Congress (APC), over his recent utterances against President Bola Tinubu and his removal as Senate Chief Whip.

Ndume, reportedly apologized for his utterances which he said were not supposed to have been made public.

Ndume was removed as Chief Whip of the senate after he accused President Bola Tinubu not been accessible.

He was thereafter given the Chairmanship of the Tourism  Committee, which he rejected, as well as the office allocated to him.

The Senator was summoned by the National Working Committee, (NWC) of the APC led by the National Chairman Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, to explain his recent utterances against the President.

Briefing newsmen after the closed door meeting, Senator Ndume stated that he has accepted the mistake of not talking to the party as a last point.

He conceded that rather than raising some issues on national television, he should have complained through the party leadership.

With what has happened which you are all aware, it is not surprising that I was invited to hear my own side and we had family discussions and I actually accepted the mistake of not talking to the party as a last point.

“I promised the party that all my observations as a senior member of the family should have terminated or ended with the party.

“That is something that moving forward, I will do, but whatever I said or whatever I did was out of patriotism and those issues maybe said strongly, but they are true but then I should have talked to the party as the last bus stop.

“My membership, I have not been expelled, even the party did not say we don’t want you here, because he is my father, the party is my father, the only thing the party said is that look if you don’t want this house you can go to any house. Where will I go? This is my house.”

The National Chairman of the APC Dr Ganduje, said the party is satisfied with Ndume’s apology and would convey same to the leadership of the Senate with a view to having it review its position.

EndBadGovernance Protest

Organizers of the ongoing nationwide Protests in Osun state have agreed to suspend their action.

They adduced the action to an earlier meeting with the state government during which their demands were presented to the deputy governor of the state, Kola Adewusi, who received them.

It was however gathered that the suspension might not be unconnected with the 2024 edition of the Osun Osogbo Festival which normally attracts tourists coming from different part of Nigeria and around the world.

Statement by the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens: EndBadGovernance reads in parts:

“We the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens, the organizing body of the EndBadGovernance protest in Osun State, wish to address the public and the media regarding the ongoing Protest, which began on the 1st of August 2024 and marks its 6th day today.

“Since the inception of this peaceful protest, we have made our demands clear, seeking immediate action from our leaders to address the pressing issues affecting the citizens of our beloved state and country.

“We acknowledge the recent address by the President of Nigeria; however, we express our profound disappointment as the President speech failed to address any of our specific demands.

“Despite this setback, today we successfully presented our demands to the Governor of Osun State through the deputy governor and Secretary to the State Government, who told us that the Governor will forward our demands to the federal Executive Council.

“Furthermore, we reviewed the security situation vis-a- vis the Osun Osogbo festival presently ongoing at Osogbo.

“It is worthy of note to establish that Protest is incidentally taking place in Osogbo which is of concern.

“Considering the safety of the influx of tourists coming for the global Osun osogbo festival and the possibility of hoodlums disguising as tourist and unleashing attacks on peaceful protesters amidst other security concerns, we consider it imperative to put the protest on hold today 6th August, 2024.

“While we salute the courage of peaceful protesters, we urge concerned citizens to remain resolute on our demands and continue to ventilate the same while planning for the next stage of the struggle should incase the demands are not meant .

“We urge the government to act promptly and decisively on the issues we have raised.

“The Coalition will remain vigilant and committed to ensuring that our demands are met while we call on all participants and supporters to stay united and await further updates on the progress of our engagement with the government.

“We thank the people of Osun State and all Nigerians for their unwavering support and commitments to the cause of justice and good governance.

“Let us continue to advocate for a better Nigeria with peace and dignity.”
