Al-Mustapha Slams President Tinubu, Says National Broadcast Off Mark

Hamza Al-Mustapha and Bola Tinubu

By Akinwale Kasali

Hamza Al-Mustapha,  former Chief Security Officer,  CSO, to late Military Dictator, General Sani Abacha, has slammed President Bola Tinubu for deviating from the grievances of protesters when he addressed the Nigerians in reaction to the hunger, hardship and bad governance protest.

Al-Mustapha faulted President Tinubu for failing to address the salient points raised by the protesters and their sponsors, and said his response  was harsh and not in line with the dictates of Chapter Two of the Nigerian Constitution which confers rights to peaceful protests on citizens.

The former Presidential Candidate of Action Alliance, AA, said those around the President are the major problems of the country, saying that they have continously failed to inform the President of the realities on ground.

He added that they failed in their duties when they could not prevail on the protesters to halt their actions even when the later gave over one month notice of their impending actions.

Al-Mustapha said he is perturbed that lives were lost with many people injured just as he decried the destruction of property during the unfortunate development.

The retired Nigerian Army intelligence officer, registered his sympathy to the victims of the protest by not only wearing black coloured caftan but also standing throughout the media session even when the event was held in his residence. He reminded the President that governance is a herculean thing and different from the razzmatazz of campaigns.

He expressed his mood about the nation thus: “Let me be on my feet, I feel sad, I’m very sad in the sense that every candidate, every political party came up with an agenda and then if going by the contents of the agenda, manifestos of political parties and that of the individual candidates and their running mates were anything to go by, Nigerians would have been highly progressive and very peaceful but to me, seeing the reverse of it today is what is making me sad, so I’m not in a happy mood.

“Governance is a herculean thing, it’s different from the razzmatazz of campaigns, realities on leadership that settle down to provide what is required to the people is all that matters. I’m talking to you in this way-wearing back because I’m talking from the mood and situation of the country.

“I’m not happy about the fact that people have lost loved ones. The destruction, the disaffection across the country, particularly between the leader and the leadership and the hopelessness we see every day, the current inflation when you look at our economy are worrisome.

“The reaction from youths, from different segments of our society is of great concern. We are part and parcel of the situation and if it is true that I contested in the last election, then it shows that I am also a father, so any soul, any spill of blood anywhere in Nigeria is of great concern to me.”

Even as he said he wasn’t in support of the protest, the retired military officer bemoaned the Federal Government’s  handling of the protests.

“I’m not in support of the protests, I spoke some three weeks back and I issued out warning and I said never allow the protest to commence. The good thing is that they (protesters) gave notice. And despite the long notice, nothing happened and it started. It shows that those around the leadership that had allowed that to happen themselves, have failed in their duties. I can see negligence. Those around the president are not in support of the president, talk less to have allowed him to read such a speech, that is away from the grievances outlined by the protesters and their sponsors.

“So, if they are pushing the president to be hitting left while their side is on the right, then it shows those who misdirected him to the left are his enemies and enemies of the system and the country. Every government or every leadership is saddled with advisers and other arms of government that collectively should look at the state of the nation and present it to the president before his speech is written. So squarely and sincerely, you are hitting point and at the end of the day, people would have succour. Besides, every leadership on earth, from the beginning to the end of time, is anchored on two things. One is the confidence of the people in the leadership. And when their hope is lost, when their confidence is lost, once anything affects the hope and confidence of the people, then leadership must sit down and adjust. And that is the pain I’m having. “

Asked what he would  have done if he had won the 2023 Presidential election he contested alongside President Bola Tinubu, the politician said: “Politics aside, it would have been extremely different because I think, I’m not praise-singing our political party and our team. We are the only political party and candidate that was about the youths as the source of investment. We were the only ones who spelt out protecting and signifying women, we were the only ones who talked about deeply on securing Nigeria in phases and stages, we were the only ones who talked about also, recovery from the losses, from remittances of what people stole and then in support of Naira and then looking at Naira from the international trade and looking at Naira from the international dirty politics.

“We were the only ones that talked about dirty budget politics in Nigeria. We talked about dirty domestic oil politics, and we talked about and planned for international dirty oil politics. These are some of the problems bedevilling the country today. If these were managed as contained in our plans, definitely this wouldn’t be the situation of Nigeria today.”

He however recalled that in his closing remarks during one of the debates he had with some presidential candidates, he proposed that whatever candidates had researched and compiled should be handed over to whosoever emerges winner so that there would be entrenchment of democracy, peace and prosperity in all aspects of life in Nigeria.

The DSS revelation came  against the backdrop of enquiries by the Polish Head of Diplomatic Mission in the country regarding the fate and  whereabouts of the suspects.

Further throwing light on the development, the DSS spokesperson noted that the arrested polish nationals were not actually targeted ,but were victims of their location at the time security agents were effecting arrests during the protest.

“For the persons we have picked up from Kano because of where they were found during the protest and display of foreign flags in Kano, that was two days ago and as a responsible security organization, we owe it an obligation to do some verification and ascertain basic reasons and circumstances for some cases.

They were picked as a result of security enforcement because of where they were when the incident happened.

It is not a targeted operation on behalf of the Director General, DSS, and Nigeria.

“As the foremost domestic security organization, we believe we have to work in sync will all of you who are men and countries of goodwill and our operations must be governed by democratic principles and protocols that emphasises freedom and human rights ,and of course, intelligence and security governance .We obey all of this whether we are dealing with Nigerians or foreigners”, Afunanya noted .

He, therefore, appealed to the members of the diplomatic corps, not to  lend their countries’ support  to subversive elements.

President Tinubu at a Security Council meeting on Tuesday directed Service Chiefs to go tough on those flying foreign flags in the country.

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has expressed concern over military takeover in some West African countries, saying it goes against the fundamental values and obligations of the military profession.

Addressing his counterparts from the Economic Community of West Africa States, (ECOWAS) during the 42nd ordinary meeting of the Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja, on Wednesday, Musa emphasized that such actions have led to unintended consequences and posed a threat to democratic values in the region

General Musa stressed the importance of eradicating the threat of military takeover, adding that in democratic nations, the military should strictly adhere to democratic principles as outlined in their respective constitutions.

Addressing the meeting, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, and his Foreign Affairs counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar, urged the service chiefs from the regional bloc to work together effectively in addressing terrorism and combating the illegal movement of small arms and light weapons in the West African sub-region.

Although 15 defence chiefs were expected to attend, representatives from Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, and Togo were notably absent.

At the conclusion of the last meeting in August of last year, the defence chiefs agreed to take a thorough and all-encompassing approach in addressing the political, security, and diplomatic aspects of the situation in Niger Republic.

The Military Administrations in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger had established a mutual defence pact, causing them to withdraw from the broader ECOWAS bloc in January.

Nationwide Protests: In New Video, President Tinubu Again, Begs Nigerians, Admits “Avoidable Lag”

Bola Tinubu Democracy Day Speech

By Ayodele Oni

In a State House official Video, President Bola Tinubu has attributed the hardship confronting Nigerians to an “avoidable lag” between the subsidy removal and the implementation of his administration’s plans.

The President, again, pleaded with Nigerians to remain calm and patient as his administration works to address the country’s economic challenges.

The President’s plea comes as protests continue to rock several States across the country.

Among others, the protesters are demanding the resumption of subsidy of fuel, which was removed by Tinubu on May 29, 2023, following his swearing-in as president.

In the video released by the State House on Wednesday, President Tinubu acknowledged the difficulties faced by Nigerians, admitting that the transition has been tougher than expected.

However, Tinubu reassured Nigerians that his policies would ultimately yield positive results.

He said, “Fellow Nigerians, this period may be hard on us and there’s no doubt that it is tough on us, but I urge you all to look beyond the present temporary pains and aim at the larger picture.

“All our good and helpful plans are in the works. More importantly, I know that they will work. Sadly, there was an avoidable lag between subsidy removal and these plans coming fully on line.

“I plead with you, please, have faith in our ability to deliver and in our concern for your well-being. We will get out of this turbulence and due to the measures we have taken, Nigeria will be better equipped and able to take advantage of the future that awaits her.

“For example, we shall fulfill our promise to make education more affordable to all and provide loans to higher education students who may need them. No Nigerian students will have to abandon higher education system because of lack of money.

“Our commitment is to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of our people. On principle, we shall never falter, I assure you, my fellow countrymen and women, that we are exiting the darkness to enter a new and glorious dawn. Now, I must get back to work in order to make this vision come true.”

Looting Of NCC-ICT Park: Dangote Offers Renovation As Group Rejects Its Rumoured Relocation From Kano To Kebbi

NCC Industrial Park

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Arewa Youth Assembly AYA, has rejected calls from some quarters for the relocation of the vandalized National Communication Commission, NCC, Information Technology Centre, ICT, from its original Kano abode to Kebbi State.

This is just as the umbrella body of Northern youths warned the people, particularly, Kebbi indigenes, not to be taken in by such deceptive insinuations.

The Source reports that on day one of the #EndBadGovernance protest, the Multi million Naira  NCC-ICT building located in the Nasarawa area of the commercial hub of the North, alongside other numerous private and public facilities and business concerns fell prey to the orgy of looting vandalization, arson and destruction by rampaging youths.

Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister for Digital Economy, while appraising the situation in the wake of the vandalization, lamented that millions of Naira had gone down the drain.

But in a statement on Monday, August 5, while also reflecting on the spate of arson, looting and vandalization which trailed the protest in the state, the Kano State Government informed that a private outfit in the state  has volunteered to rehabilitate the structure.

However, following the unfortunate fate of the building, speculations have been rife of late that the project is set to be relocated to Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State Capital.

The AYA, in the statement on Wednesday, August , 7, 2024, jointly signed by Dr Aliyu Mohammed, and Dr Hafiz Garba, President and Secretary, respectively dismissed the alleged relocation move as a calculated attempt to deceive and mislead the unsuspecting citizens of Kebbi state .

“Relocating the ICT park to any other state ,would not only incur additional costs ,but also will cause delays  hindering the region’s progress in digital innovation.

“It is more realistic to make a renovation on the existing foundation in Kano than starting the project all over again somewhere.

“Necessary infrastructures for the thriving of investments such as Digital Innovation Park is critical and therefore situating the facility in Kano was not a coincidence ,but an action which was carefully thought out and executed.

“Kano state holds historical and strategic importance as a commercial hub in Northern Nigeria ,with established transportation networks ,including a fully functional international airport and major road links .

“Kano state is, therefore, well positioned to host the Digital Innovation Park. The location of Kano state ensures accessibility and connectivity amongst all other States of the North West which is critical to a successful operationalization of such an initiative” part of the AYA statement reads .

While noting the fact that Kebbi State, like some other Northern States crave investments that can potentially lift it up the economic ladder, the group also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ignore any call for the relocation of the landmark project from Kano.

The Source have, however, gathered that business magnet Aliko Dangote, is believed to have waded in to remedy the situation.

An impeccable source informed this medium that as part of efforts to ensure that Kano is not denied the benefits of the ICT hub, the President of Dangote Group, himself,  a prominent scion of the ancient city, may have stepped in to to bear the cost of putting the project back to its original shape.

Although the Kano State Government was not specific when, on Monday, it dropped the hint that a private outfit from the State has offered to renovate the building, it is  strongly believed that It is the richest man in Africa – Dangote and his outfit.

Call For Investigation Of The Death Of Journalist, Pelumi Onifade Intensifies, As Court Wades In

20-Year Old Pelumi Onifade

By Akinwale Kasali

The corpse of 20-Year Old Pelumi Onifade, a Journalist with Gboah TV, was found at the Ikorodu Mortuary.

Onifade was arrested by the Police Task Force attached to the Lagos State Police Command during the #EndSARS protest in 2020, while covering the event, and had not been seen, or heard from, until his body was found in the Mortuary.

This led to the call for a thorough investigation into his death.

The Media Rights Agenda, MRA, had taken up the case, filing a suit against the Police and the Lagos State Government demanding for an investigation into his death and circumstances surrounding how his body was found at Ikorodu Mortuary.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has given a verdict,  mandating the Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu led Lagos State Government to investigate the death of Onifade.

The Court’s decision, delivered by Justice Ayokunle Olayinka Faji, includes an order for a coroner’s inquest to determine the cause of Mr. Onifade’s death and to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Idowu Adewale, MRA Communication Officer, in a statement on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, said the Group was bent on getting justice for the deceased.

Justice Faji acknowledged that while the Lagos State Attorney-General cannot conduct an inquest without a case file, section 74 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State empowers him to request it from the Commissioner of Police.

Although the Court dismissed five of MRA’s claims against the Police due to insufficient evidence, Justice Faji noted that the Attorney-General did not contest any facts in MRA’s affidavit but raised a legal issue instead. The Attorney-General’s counsel also committed to conducting an inquest during oral arguments.

The suit, filed on August 4, 2021, by Lagos-based lawyer, Charles Musa, sought declarations that Onifade’s shooting and subsequent arrest by Police agents violated his fundamental rights.

MRA also requested the court to direct the authorities to investigate the death transparently and independently, conduct a coroner’s inquest, and prosecute those found responsible.

Justice Faji highlighted that the Police did not respond to the suit, and there was no supporting documentation for claims about the mortuary. Despite this, he commended the Attorney-General’s office for its cooperation and noted that the Attorney-General had a duty to conduct an inquest into Onifade’s death.

The Lagos State Government is yet to respond to this verdict by the Court.
