The Prof. Joash Amupitan-led Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has disclosed that over two million registered voters will decide who will be the governor of Osun state in next month’s governorship election.
Prof Amupitan the Chairman of INEC made this known during a courtesy visist to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi in his palace, saying over 2. 3 million voters have registered with the electoral body to participate in the upcoming election to elect the next governor of the state.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, the incumbent is among those seeking to be elected governor. If he wins, he will be running the state as its executive governor for a second term.
The governorship election is scheduled for August 13, according to information from INEC.
Speaking during the visit to the traditional ruler, the INEC boss stated that the election will serve as a litmus test for the commission, adding that all necessary things have been put in place to ensure a hitch-free, credible and fair election that the country will be proud of.
According to Amupitam, election will take place in the state, across the the 30 local government in the state, in 3,763 polling units, and 332 registration areas.
The INEC boss who solicited the support of all the stakeholders in the state, including the traditional and religious leaders said election should be allowed to take place peacefully, saying there’s not need for violence that can lead to the loss of lives.
“The blood of one innocent person is not worth a governorship election. Nobody should be killed, threatened or intimidated because of an election,” Amupitan said.
