Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has charged the newly elected National President of the Nigerian Medical Association, (NMA) Prof. Afekhide Ernest Omoti to bring his experience into reality in the office.
The Governor congratulated Prof Oniyo on his election, describing his emergence as a well-deserved recognition of excellence, professionalism, and dedicated service to humanity.

Governor Okpebholo stated that Prof. Omoti’s election to lead the nation’s foremost medical association was a source of pride to Edo State and a reflection of the quality of professionals produced by the state.
The governor noted that Prof. Omoti’s outstanding contributions to the medical profession, particularly in ophthalmology, research, healthcare administration, and medical advocacy, had earned him widespread respect within and outside Nigeria.
He stated that the professor’s distinguished record of service, including his tenure as former Chairman of the Edo State branch of the NMA, Chairman of the National Eye Health Committee, and former Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, University of Benin Teaching Hospital chapter, adequately prepared him for the national assignment.
Governor Okpebholo also commended the Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Benin and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for his immense contributions to medical research and healthcare development.
According to the governor, Prof. Omoti’s over 140 scientific publications and participation in several global medical conferences demonstrate his commitment to advancing healthcare delivery and medical excellence.
Okpebholo expressed confidence that Prof. Omoti would deploy his wealth of experience, integrity, and leadership capacity in steering the affairs of the association during his tenure.

While wishing him a successful tenure, the governor assured him of the support and goodwill of the Edo State Government and the people of the state as he assumes the new national responsibility.
Prof. Omoti emerged victorious at the NMA Annual General Congress and Delegates Meeting held in Kano on Saturday, May 2, 2026, polling 253 votes to defeat his closest rival, Dr. Nosa Lancy Orhue, who secured 143 votes.
