CBN: Fraudsters Planning Cyberattacks Against Banks, OFIs

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has warned the banking public  over the  increasing cyberattack attempts targeting the personal accounts, issued through fraudulent messages and emails by fraudsters falsely claiming that such originate from the apex bank.

The bank warned that the cyber hackers who are circulating the fake messages and emails are aiming to steal personal information and accounts from bank customers with the aim of stealing their money from their accounts.

Beware of such messages and emails, the CBN warned Nigerians and other bank customers.

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by Hakama Sidi Ali, Acting Director of Corporate Communications, the apex bank said cybercriminals are deploying deceptive tactics designed to mislead unsuspecting individuals and compromise sensitive personal information.

The CBN,  said the fraudulent communications—circulating via email and online platforms—often urge recipients to click on suspicious links. These messages also contain false claims related to CBN’s leadership, licensing operations, and policy decisions, all aimed at creating credibility and luring victim, the apex bank noted.

“The official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria remains www.cbn.gov.ng. Members of the public are strongly advised to refrain from clicking links or sharing personal information on suspicious websites,” the statement said.

The Yemi Cardoso-led CBN, however, urged Nigerians to verify the authenticity of any communication attributed to the CBN through its official website or trusted media outlets, saying such messages should be reported to the bank and law enforcement agencies whenever they detect any suspicion.

In 2025, Nigerian banks and other financial institutions, OFIs lost approximately ₦25.85 billion to fraud. According to the Nigerian Inter-Bank Settlement System, NIBSS.
