The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has adopted and affirmed former president Goodluck Jonathan as its Presidential Candidate for the 2027 polls.
The affirmation came amidst alleged orchestrated plots by the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister Nyesom Wike, to disrupt the event on Saturday May 30, 2026.
A statement from the faction’s spokesperson Ime Ememobong, alleged that security personnel were deployed to the original venue for the party’s special convention in Abuja, noting that veiled threats were issued against the management of the Event Centre by the FCT Minister.
The party regretted that the disruptive measures came, even when the party’s leadership duly notified the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, as well as security agencies of the planned convention which was billed for “A Class Event Centre, Abuja.”
The PDP faction expressed serious concern that the owners and management of the Event Centre were eventually forced to cancel its earlier booking, following alleged threats from Wike to revoke the title deeds of the property, should the PDP’s convention be allowed to hold at the facility.
According to the party, the authorities of the FCT had earlier on Friday issued a notice warning Event and Hotel owners, and management in Abuja against allowing what it described as illegal political gatherings to be held at their facilities.
This was as the factional PDP alleged that over 20 truckloads of Police personnel and other security operatives were drafted to condone off the road leading to the venue of the convention on Friday night, thereby effectively disrupting the exercise.
However, the party noted that following the intervention of major stakeholders, and leaders , including BoT members, the Interim National Committee members, the National Committee members, body of State Chairmen ,and candidates ,the party decided against confrontation, but chose to move the event to an alternative venue.
According to the statement, the formal presentation of the presidential flag to Jonathan will be formally held on a date to be fixed by the leadership of the party.
The PDP, also, strongly condemned what it described as an abuse of State power by officials of the APC-led Federal Government and FCT administration.
It warned that such brazen act of impunity and actions against opposition parties could, in the long run, undermine the country’s democracy.
