Congressman Steube call Nigerian Government ‘corrupt and inept’

The United States of America, USA, Congress has approved an amendment to a bill which  further cuts  certain categories of aids, and assistance to Nigeria in a bid to force authorities into adopting more stringent measures towards protecting its citizens.

The Congressional decision is coming against the backdrop of growing concerns over the alleged persecutions and  killings of Christians and vulnerable citizens by  banditry and terrorist elements in Nigeria.

The move by the Congress will see US aids and assistance to Nigeria cut by as much as 100 percent from its present 50% and will only be reviewed if the Nigerian Government take effective steps at mitigating the present orgy of violent attacks, kidnapping and killings of citizens by terrorists.

The amended motion which was moved by the lawmaker representing Florida’s 17th Congressional District , Gregory Steube, and was unanimously adopted through voice vote on Wednesday July 15, 2026, is aimed at forcing the Nigerian Government into pursuing tougher measures against the activities of insurgents and other criminal elements believed to be behind the spates of attacks and killings ongoing in certain parts of the country.

Moving the motion for the amendment, Steube emphasized that sticking to the policy of withholding only 50 percent of aids and financial assistance is like patting the Nigerian Government on the back in the face of its failure to meet its basic constitutional obligations to the citizenry.

“I rise in strong support for my amendment to increase the withholding threshold for assistance to Nigeria from 50 percent to 100 percent, while keeping in place, benchmarks that demand Nigeria take effective steps to address the violence and persecution that continue to devastate the country.

“Nigeria has faced a horrific wave of violence that its corrupt Government has failed to address.

“For years, and especially in recent months, Christians and other religious minorities in Nigeria have been subjected to violence and terrorism at the hands of extremists operating with impunity”, the Florida Representative noted.

He expressed serious concern that Christian women and young girls and other vulnerable people have continued to bear the brunt of Nigeria’s authorities’ huge failure in taming the insurgents and other criminal elements responsible for the mass kidnappings ra*e and killings of innocent people.

“If the aid conditions included in the bill are important enough to withhold half of all the funding to the Nigerian Government, then they are important enough to withhold all of the funding”, Steube emphasized.

He warned against channeling  the hard-earned dollar tax of the US citizens to what  he called “Nigerian Government that has failed woefully to uphold religious freedom, confront terrorism, as well as protect the people.

According to him, aids and assistance to the inept and corrupt  Nigerian Government must not form part of the mounting debt profile of the USA currently estimated to around $ 40 trillion.
