Perhaps it was a coincidence. But tongues are wagging after the Enugu State Government suspended the Traditional Ruler of Ibagwa Opi Ogbozalla Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area, Williams Ezugwu, with immediate effect.
The Traditional Ruler’s fate came barely two weeks after the Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, visited him in solidarity with the community over their ordeal in the hands of bandits who killed and kidnapped his subjects.
This has, therefore, prompted not a few to say that the suspension stems from Obi’s visit, a courtesy which they insist the State Governor, Peter Mbah has not extended to the Community.
The Royal Father’s suspension was announced by Charles Egumgbe, the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs in a statement issued on his behalf on Thursday by the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Emeka Nebeife.
The statement said Ezugwu was suspended because of his conduct, allegedly, considered inconsistent with provisions of the Traditional Rulers Law of Enugu State.
According to the Commissioner, the suspension takes immediate effect.
Included in the allegations against the Traditional Ruler is his failure to subscribe to the community’s code of conduct.
He was also alleged to have failed to constitute a cabinet to assist in the administration of the community since its creation.
The Government did not, however, cite Obi’s recent visit to the Monarch ’s palace as a reason for the suspension.
The Traditional Ruler had received Obi at his Palace during the NDC’s Presidential Candidate’s visit to the community. During the visit, he met with residents and supporters.
