A major crisis has hit the African Democratic Congress, ADC, following a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja sacking the David Mark-led leadership of the party.
The court, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, also nullified all actions taken by the Senator David Mark-led Caretaker Committee, including the presidential primary that produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate for the January 16, 2027 election
The judgment followed a suit filed by Nafiu Bala Gombe, a former ADC National Deputy Chairman (North-East), who challenged the process through which David Mark and his team took control of the party.
Gombe argued that following the resignation of former National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, he was constitutionally qualified to assume the party’s leadership.
The court upheld his claims and granted the reliefs sought.
Atiku had already been listed by INEC as the ADC presidential candidate and had picked former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate.
The judgment has now thrown the opposition party’s 2027 presidential ticket into uncertainty.
The ruling comes barely 24 hours after Atiku held a massive campaign rally in Sokoto State.
The party has vowed to appeal the judgment. Its National Welfare Secretary, Nkemakolam Ukandu, confirmed that the decision would be challenged at the appellate court.
The judgment could trigger another round of legal and political battles within the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to political experts familiar with the issue.
