When Stephen Vanham, a young Medical Doctor, headed to a supermarket  in Port Harcourt, nobody thought it was the last time he would be seen alive.

It was on Saturday, August 8, 2026, that the doctor headed to Spar Supermarket in the Old GRA, Port Harcourt to, either, perhaps, make some purchases or meet with somebody or some people. Nobody knows yet.

But he never made it back to his house.

Three days after he was declared missing, precisely on August 11, his multiple-stabbed body was found. He had been gruesomely killed.

No reason has been attributed to why he was killed. And no arrests have been made. But his colleagues and all those who knew him are inconsolable.

They are mourning the murder of a young doctor who cared for people, who was kind and compassionate, and whose primary job was to keep people alive.

In an obituary, the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital Alumni, whose member he was, wrote:

“To heal sometimes.

To relieve often.

To comfort always.

You dedicated your life to saving others.

Now, may you find eternal rest.

Thank you for the lives you touched.

“You served with skill, kindness and humility.

Your legacy of compassion will never fade.

You will forever remain in our hearts.

Thank you Doctor.

Rest well.”
