Former Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has called on security agencies to investigate the attack on the state Governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Manir Daniya.
The former governor condemned the attack on the ADC candidate, saying the state government is trying to use the instrumentality of state apparatus to intimidate the opposition.
He however stated that the ADC will not be intimidated by the government while its members are trying to express their political rights.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives gave the warning in a statement issued by his media office, saying the incident was deeply disturbing, calling on the State Security Services, DSS, and Nigerian Police Forces, NPF to institute an independent investigation into the attack.
The ADC governorship candidate had alleged that personnel of the Sokoto Marshal and the Sokoto State Community Guard attacked his convoy near the Sokoto Airport on Friday, October 30, 2026, an incident he claimed endangered his life.
Some vehicles were also damaged during the attack, the ADC candidate alleged.
Tambuwal said security agencies must ensure that anyone found culpable was brought to justice, saying every Nigerian had the right to move freely, associate with any political party and seek political office in accordance with the law of the country.
“No citizen should face threats, violence or harassment for exercising these rights,” he said.
The former speaker urged political actors to embrace peaceful engagement rather than resort to violence, declaring, “Let the people speak through their votes, not through arms.”
He stated that security outfits had a responsibility to protect all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations, and warned against their use as instruments of political intimidation.
“Security outfits have a responsibility to protect all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, and must never become instruments of political intimidation,” he said.
Tambuwal also called on the Sokoto State Government to ensure that all security outfits under its authority operated lawfully and impartially.
Despite the reported incident, the former governor said the ADC would proceed with its scheduled presidential campaign flag-off in Sokoto on November 4, 2026.
“Let it be clear: no amount of intimidation or threats will deter us,” Tambuwal declared saying the state and Nigeria belongs to all citizens and not an exclusive possession of anyone.
