The dire security situation takes a frightening dimension last week with the revelation by professor Bolaji Akinyemi that external forces are involved in the security crisis Nigeria is currently facing. In an interview with a National Daily, Akinyemi, who was once a minister of foreign Affairs, and was a member of the security committee set up by fomer president Jonathan to look into the menace of Boko Haram and report back to the presidency noted that many of the discredited Islamic militancy groups all over the world are targeting Nigeria as a possible cell headquarters for their activities, having been dislodged from their enclaves by either coalition forces or other interested groups.
This magazine has in the past exclusively indicated the deep involvement of foreign security agencies in the activities of Boko Haram, noting that it appears to be covert operation of the western and American intelligence Agencies.
But Akinyemi’s revelation puts the issue in a different perspective. According to him, Hisbullah, Islamic State, and other groups under pressure from the Iraq war and war against terror are all moving to Nigeria. Therefore if this fundamental issue is not take into consideration, the war against terror may never end. There is no country where these groups takes a stronghold that has not suffered a protracted crisis.
