Edo Group Warns Against Rigging September Gubernatorial Polls, As PDP, APC Trade Words

Voting at a Polling Unit

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

A Civil Society Advocacy Group, Edo Democracy Movement, EDM, has warned that serious consequences will surely trail any attempt by  persons and/or entities to manipulate the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.

This is even as the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, and the All Progressive Congress, APC, continued to trade allegations of plans to rig the polls.

In a statement issued on Saturday, August 31, 2024, Convener of EDM, Omoregbe Osayiuwa, noted that there is a high level of political awareness, so much so that people are ready to protect their votes no matter the situation.

The group, therefore,  cautioned the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Security agencies, and other relevant election supervisory organs to be wary of some unscrupulous elements who might want to use them to scuttle the genuine wishes of Edo electorate.

The group, however, insisted that any attempt to undermine the electoral choice of the people, may spark a revolution that will commence in Edo, and resonate in other parts of the country.

“Any attempt by the APC to rig the forthcoming Edo governorship election will be met with unprecedented resistance, sparking a revolution that will reverberate across Nigeria beginning from Edo state

“We caution the Independent National Electoral Commission and Security agencies to remain impartial and resist any pressure from politicians to destabilize our State.

Edo is not one of those States that will be subjugated or manipulated for political gains. The high level of political awareness among the people of Edo will not allow for any compromise of the sanctity of their votes”, the EDM stated.

Tony Aziegbemi, the PDP Chairman in the State at the weekend raised the alarm over alleged plans by its main rival, APC, to compromise the integrity of the electoral process through the manipulation of the BVAS machine.

According to him, credible intelligence available to the party, suggests subtle arrangements to enlist the services of some pliable INEC officials to compromise the integrity of the Bimordal Voter Accreditation  System, BVAS.

The PDP Chairman  who spoke at a media briefing in Benin noted that so far, the APC has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that it  can not be trusted to allow a free and fair polls in the September 21, 2024 gubernatorial contest .

“We wish to draw the attention of INEC and Edolites to the sinister plan of the APC which has been uncovered by our intelligence unit.

“APC has perfected plans to use fake INEC staff posing as Technical Staff to tamper with the BVAS machine on the day of the election to beef up the number of accredited voters on the BVAS machine.

APC knowing that it cannot win the election has resorted to rigging plans which will terribly fail by the grace of Almighty God”, the PDP stated.

But the APC has insisted that the PDP’s  alarm is merely to divert attention from its well-oiled plans to undermine the  outcome of the election.

Kassim Afegbua, spokesperson for the APC campaign Council, said that the PDP, going by its outburst, is indirectly telling the world its evil plans for the election.

“The PDP has just told the public what it is planning to do. But the bad news is that we are monitoring them closely”  Afegbua noted.

Rain in Gombe state

By Akinwale Kasali

Thousands of Gombe State residents are counting their loses. They have been rendered homeless, following the flood that wrecked havoc in the State no thanks to heavy rainfall.

The Gombe State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA,  disclosed that over 2,517 houses and shops were either completely or partially destroyed by flood which ravaged 33 communities.

The Deputy Director, Relief and Rehabilitation of the Agency, Ibrahim Nalado, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Saturday in Gombe State.

The affected communities are: Dukku, Funakaye and Billiri Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

According to him, these areas were flooded due to the heavy downpour that occured between Aug. 12 and Aug. 22.

“In Dukku LGA, 10 communities were affected. In Funakaye LGA, 20 communities were affected and in Billiri LGA, three communities were affected”, he said.

Nalado said that the flooding and windstorms affected mostly houses and a few farmlands in the communities.

He said that there was no loss of life but two children were injured in Dukku, and seven animals washed away.

On the impact of flooding on farmlands, the Deputy Director said Hina community in Yamaltu/Deba LGA of the State was the worst-hit.

He said that not less than 1000 hectares of rice, maize, sorghum and millet farmlands were submerged in water.

The Deputy Director stated that his team visited Hina community on Friday, Aug. 30, to assess the level of damage.

Speaking further,  Nalado described the impact of the flooding as ‘huge and devastating’ in view of the vast area affected.

“Farmers were getting ready to harvest their crops.

“The farmers were so worried but because it was a natural phenomenon, they accepted it in good fate,” he said.

The Deputy Director stated that data on the number of farmers affected by the flood were being collated at Hina.

Nalado stated that his agency had assessed the level of damage and was compiling the reports to forward to the State Government and other relevant agencies.

How IGPs Abandoned Devices Used For Tracking Kidnappers, Bandits

0
Solomon Arase
Late Solomon Arase

Few years ago, some kidnappers were arrested by the Police relying on the tracking system acquired for the Police by then Inspector General of Police, IGP,  Dr Solomon Arase, while trying to collect N5 million ransome for the abduction of elder statesman, Olu Falae.

It was learned that the devices contributed to the successes of Abba Kyari, the disgraced former team head of the Inspector General of Police Response Team, IRT.

Today, the platform used to successfully nab many kidnappers, many of whom are now behind bars, have been abandoned by successive IGP in the country, according to one of the sources privy to the acquisition and working of the gadgets under Arase.

The consequences of the  abandonment of the equipment is the increasing spate of kidnapping and banditry which has rendered security agencies helpless, a top police officer told Vanguard.

The retired officer disclosed to the newspaper that the device, a real-time tracking technological platform helped the Intelligence Response Team, IRT, to crack many criminal cases, has now become a tool used by politicians to monitor “enemies and mistresses”.

The officer said this while responding to Vanguard’s question on what went wrong with the system put in place to monitor the locations of kidnappers and interception of calls for prompt arrest and rescue of abducted victims.

The Police launched intelligence-led policing in 2015 with the installation of a tracking device that was installed by  Arase.

There was, also, the operation unit code-named Intelligence Response Team, IRT, (still in operation).

The team monitored  kidnappers’ movements in real-time with the information from the device, thereby helping them stay one step ahead.

This device also helped investigators analyze the locations and patterns of calls made by the kidnappers, the routes, and potential safe houses.

In addition, the device provided valuable evidence, such as call records, location data and communication patterns, to build a strong case against the kidnappers.

One such case was the arrest of five kidnappers of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae. He was taken captive by the herdsmen on September 21, 2015, during his 77th birthday.

In this case, five of the kidnappers came to pick up the N5 million ransom in Suleja, Niger State.

One of the senior Police Officers who effected the breakthrough told Vanguard “Immediately the kidnappers removed the SIM card used to negotiate, we knew where they were and intercepted them at the last bridge to Minna.

“The ransom money they collected was still in the boot with the SIM card. Five of them were arrested. The motorcycle they used to convey Chief Olu Falae was retrieved.

“The N5 million ransom was marked by the bank. They removed only N100,000 from it. The kidnappers were sentenced to life imprisonment.”

Asked what went wrong with the system put in place to monitor the locations of kidnappers and interception of calls for prompt arrest and rescue of abducted victims, the retired senior officer attributed it to the priority of successive Inspectors General of Police.

His words: “The priority of successive IGPs was quite different. Solomon Arase set up the platform when he was the IGP. It was a technical platform to track calls.

“It was mounted in the IGP’s office then and only one officer, who is now an AIG, had access to the technical platform.

“The Intelligence Response Team, IRT, was supposed to be the operational wing that would work with the technical platform. When the technical team got information, it would pass it to IRT to go to the location and make an arrest. Drones and vehicles were bought for the operation.

“But successive IGPs who were analogues didn’t know what to do. They merged the technical platform and IRT. Instead of the platform being used for crime prevention, it became political.

“People in the National Assembly and Villa got hold of the platform and used it to track their enemies and mistresses.

“For such a platform, you don’t give both the technical and the operational units to just one person who would be compromised by politicians. That was the beginning of the collapse of the platform. It requires someone with power and intelligence; someone of a strategic level who is keen on that line.

“This platform was supposed to be renewed and hooked up with the service provider. But that was never the priority of successive IGPs.

“They had money to pay for the accumulated subscription but they refused to pay. When you leave such a system for more than one year, it requires recalibration. This technology keeps evolving.

“You can’t say something you set up today will be used the same way for 10 years without being upgraded. Before long, the system broke down, and the functionality of the Police tracking equipment began to diminish and subsequently went comatose.

“The tracker, particularly, became non-functional due to non-subscription as well as failure to engage the relevant company to carry out required system upgrades.

“Due to the failure to pay subscription fees for about three years, and after a grace period had expired, the company overseeing its maintenance and upgrade decided to withdraw its services. This made it difficult to track bandits, kidnappers, and other forms of violent crimes.”

Arase, one of the most respected IGPs in the country was, in June, removed as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, PSC, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ihedioha  Set To Join LP Appoints Ori New CPS After Onyeukwu Decamped To APC

Emeka Ihedioha and Mr Martins Ori

Former Governor of Imo State, Rt. Honourable Emeka Ihedioha, is set to join the Labour Party, LP, with thousands of his supporters and loyalists.

In preparation, Ihedioha has appointed a new Chief Press Secretary, CPS – Mr. Martins Ori.

Ori, a Senior Journalist, succeeds Chibuike Onyeukwu, who is currently aspiring for the Chairmanship seat of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of the state on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Onyeukwu, who surprising decamped to the APC, and abandoned his long time boss, served as Ihedioha’s CPS between May 2019 and January 2020 when Ihedioha was Governor. He served in the same position while Ihedioha was the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.

Ori comes to the job with a rich experience spanning years of robust journalism practice.

He spent 10 years at The Sun newspaper working in various capacities – Assistant Editor, Sports, Assistant Editor, Education and Assistant Editor, Investigation.

Before then, he had worked as South East Bureau Chief, Hallmark Newspaper.

Ori transferred his services in 2021 to the News Echo Newspaper where he served as Managing Editor.

He later teamed up with Afam Echi to co-found Oriental Newspaper, a weekly tabloid based in Owerri, Imo State.

Recall that Hon Emeka Ihedioha, a few months ago, dumped the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, after more than two decades of membership with thousands of his  supporters.

He is yet to formally pitch his tent with any political party but indications are that he will eventually join the Labour Party, LP.

Besides consulting with the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and the party’s lone Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, his campaign outfit, Rebuild Imo Movement recently announced it was coalescing into the Labour Party.

Adeboye Denies N17bn Contract Scam

0

Son of the General Overseer of the Redeem Christian Church of God, RCCG Adeolu Adeboye has denied involvement in an alleged contract scam in Kaduna state.

The rebuttal, was issued in a statement by Ronchess Global Resources on Friday.

Accordingly, the company said the report that, Ronchess Global Resources abandoned a road construction contract worth over N17 billion midway, is false and  cannot be substantiated.

A report (not The Source) recently detailed how the construction firm allegedly promoted by the son of the leader of  one of the biggest Pentecostal church in the country, Pastor E. A Abeboye obtained the contract under the immediate governor of the state, Nasir El rufai, but abandoned the contract after executing 30 percent of it.

The contract is now a subject of litigation between the Economic and Financial Crime s Commission, EFCC, which the report said was invited by the state government and Ronchess Global Resources.

But reacting to the allegation, the firm said Adeolu was not involved in any direct contract deal with the state government, saying what transpired between the firm and the government of Kaduna state, is a normal business for which he holds no liability, as one of the directors of the company.

Claiming that the report was meant to smear the image of the respected Man of God, the company said in the statement that the “misinformation about Ronchess Global Resources Plc. and Pastor Adeolu Adeboye is troubling and unwarranted.”

The company said, “The misinformation about Ronchess Global Resources Plc. and Pastor Adeolu Adeboye is troubling and unwarranted. It’s important to clarify that Pastor Adeolu is not the owner or a shareholder in the company,” the Company said in a statement.

“The ongoing legal actions between Ronchess and the Kaduna State Government, are rooted in a civil contract dispute—nothing more.

“While Pastor Adeolu Adeboye serves as one of our directors, it’s crucial to clarify that he was never awarded any contract and neither did he nor Ronchess abandon any contract. He also did not receive any funds from the Kaduna State Government.

“Recent libelous publications by SaharaReporters suggesting otherwise are false and appear to be part of a deliberate effort to tarnish his reputation and the Ronchess brand. Ronchess remains committed to delivering quality work and upholding transparency in all our dealings.”

Adeolu is the third son of Pastor Adeboye, and a pastor in RCCG where he serves as the leader of Project Nehemiah, the team responsible for taking care of the church’s logistic during its special monthly programme.

Corruption Among Top Government Officials Is Suffocating – Ngozi Okorafor, Wife, Anglican Bishop, Egbu Diocese

Ngozi Okorafor - Wife of Anglican Bishop Egbu Diocese

By George Best Okoroh

President of the Women’s Ministry in  the  Anglican Diocese of Egbu  Mrs Ngozi Okorafor has urged Government at various levels to take decisive actions to remedy the economic hardship in the country.

She also noted that recently as a show of the people’s resentment there was a 10 day protest against bad government which highlighted some of the factors that contribute to poverty in Nigeria.

The Wife of the Bishop  observed that Nigeria, described as the poorest nation in the world, is bedeviled with varying degrees of vices including unemployment among young graduates, corruption in high places, especially among political office holders, incuding top government functionaries and officials who  embezzle public funds and convert them to personal use.

Other unpleasant factors that led to the protests were non-diversification of the economy, income inequality and  laziness, especially among those who come from wealthy  families.

Mrs Okorafor who expressed these views in her Presidential Address to the 29th  Diocesan  Women’s Conference holding at Jehovah Jireh Anglican Church, Trans Egbu Owerri North LGA, Imo State, commended

the Imo State Government for the successes and challenges it encountered during its first four years, expressing  the hope that the government will address areas of deficiency in this second term .

On the theme of her address aptly titled  ‘ Come Let Us Cast Lots’ Jonah 1:7-8a, the Bishop’s Wife explained that though God is mercyful He is a consuming fire whose divine instructions and commandments are sacrosanct.

The society, she noted is full of evils, kidnapping, terrorism and the likes because people lack love. She  stressed that the Church has greater responsibilities to be more caring.

OPINION: 10 Reasons Edo Must Prefer Olumide Akpata To Others

0
Steve Osuji
Author: Steve Osuji

By Steve Osuji

On paper, this proposes to be a sumptuous election. It looks like one of those elections that presents a crushing landslide. To make it plain, if the Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC) manages to do a decent job, EXPRESSO is of the considered opinion that the Labour Party candidate, Olumide Akpata, will have a clean sweep of the Edo gubernatorial polls, holding in three week’s time (September 21st, 2024). Indeed,  in ordered climes,  we should expect a shellacking!

Here are 10 reasons undergirding this open endorsement of Mr. Akpata.

INTEGRITY

As they say, integrity is everything. In leadership, in business and in all human relationships. A man’s integrity quotient is the first course. It is said that a man who has everything but integrity, has nothing. Conversely, a man who has integrity but lacks much other things has a lot.

And what’s better than honesty and moral principles in shaping a man’s values and character. This is what Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata has proven  even to a distant observer like this column.

One notable example was Olumide’s battle with members of the Inner Bar of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in his quest to becoming president of the body in 2020.

Only 48 years old, Olumide had challenged the all- powerful Nigerian body of silk, also known as the rank of Seniors Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). These men and women are the eminence grise of not just the Nigerian bar, but the judiciary and indeed, the political system. These venerated seniors (inner bar) had hitherto, captured the Nigerian bar and for about three decades,  made sure no member of the outer bar led the NBA. Without a written rule anywhere,  they created a solid convention that “disqualified” a non-silk from aspiring to the top job of the NBA ab initio.

It was this sacrilegious code that Akpata broke in 2020 when he not only contested but beat two SANs and won by a landslide. The victory was so authentic that if you combined the figures of the two contesting SANs, he still beat them by good margins.

COURAGE

This victory marked a major turning point in the annals of the NBA.  It was indeed a paradigm shift. Once again,  any eligible lawyer can contest for the top job of the bar. It ceased to be the exclusive preserve of the silky cabal. Olumide made sure of that!

It’s actually public knowledge that the inner Bar made up of the body of SANs were rapidly becoming the vermin of the Nigerian polity and society. As shown in numerous instances, they work hand-in-gloves with corrupt politicians to pillage the commonwealth. Those who by their very profession are sworn to uphold rule of law and  defend the sanctity of the judiciary  are today, a rapine band of locusts.

From helping in money laundering through untenable legal fees, to masterminds of the malfeasance in election cases manipulation.

Many are known to be negotiators and bearers of bribe, to name just a few. Olumide showed courage in taking on some of these demigod SANs and indeed, exposing and shaming a few of them. Unbeknownst to him, Nigerians like this columnist were watching and taking note as he confronted he helped demystify some of Nigeria’s entrenched goliaths.

CAPACITY

Akpata’s battle against the ancient regime of the Bar and his election landslide victory is a pointer to the fact that he has capacity not only to mobilize but to also get the desired results. Even though he’s not from one of the three major ethnic groups, his message cut across; he was able to  win over  young and middle level lawyers who saw his vision and keyed in to his mission.

And going by his achievements in office as NBA president,  it is apparent that he can deliver on his promises. First, he reviewed the chaotic NBA electoral process that brought him in resulting in over 50% more voters turn-out in his exit election in 2022.

He introduced members of the NBA to national health insurance cover and drove a campaign to improve the wages of young lawyers across the country. His tenure as NBA president was devoid of scandal and indeed, considered an all round success. This suggests that he has capacity and the temperament  to govern.

ACTIVIST AND DISRUPTER

Olumide could be likened to a Gani Fawehinmi  of the less litigious type. He is not afraid to speak truth to power. Of course that’s the trademark of people of integrity. He exhibited his principled activism when he confronted the body of SANs.  It’s probably one of the reasons he’s not a SAN today even after leading the NBA.

It could be said that he’s not enamoured of such honorifics usually hankered after my smaller folks. He is the type to disrupt the corrupt and corruptive structures found in state governance systems across Nigeria.

He was seen calling out INEC during the last election for its shoddy outing in his neighbourhood. In one of his interviews,  he said he decided to contest Edo governorship seat because he was tired of complaining from outside. His mantra is that governance is about the people. He harps on the fact that an average of N16 billion monthly revenues accruing to the state, Edo should never be in the decrepit state it is today.

TRACK RECORD

His tracks are well paved and well worn. Both in education and work.  Federal Government College, Warri; King’s College, Lagos; University or Benin, Law degree and Law School. All this done in 22 years. He joined a prominent law firm as a fledgling lawyer in Warri, Delta State,  then migrated to Lagos to join his cousin in the corporate law firm, Templars. He sojourned there for 28 years, rising to be partner,  helping to build one of the biggest firms in Nigeria.

Then he fought a gruelling battle to lead the influential NBA,  and now, he wants to serve Edo people . This is as straightforward and unblemished as life’s record can be. A true leaders life must be shorn of dark corners and smudges as we see in many of our political leaders today.

EDO NEEDS A FRESH BREAK

If Edo people won’t vote Olumide on the basis of the above personal traits and credentials, perhaps the poor choices of candidates they are left with might force them to settle for the best of three ‘evils.’

Edo, like most other states in Nigeria has been poorly run since 1999. Whether under the flag of PDP or lately APC,  the result has been same of same –  mediocrity mating mendacity.

From a certain Lucky Igbinedion to volubly vacuous Adams Oshiomhole and now doodling Obaseki, Edo people have been left with the short end of the stick. Edo, again,  like most States in Nigeria  sure needs a new lease of life. Of the three major candidates angling for the Edo top job (Monday Okpebholo (APC), Asue Ighodalo (PDP) and Olumide Akpata (LP), the later seems to take the cake.

ASUE’s ANOTHER VERSION OF OBASEKI

Current governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo came with much promise of a much- vaunted technocrat but he has flopped like an even flower. After eight years, he never could be able to lift Edo from the morass of primordialism. Edo wears the same ugly, dirt face as represented by its ancient capital city, Benin.

All Obaseki does is talk and pretend to plan –  without end. Just the other day, Obaseki launched with much fanfare,  a 30-year master plan for Edo State. Meanwhile he has only about 30 days to effectively become a lame duck governor. A diligent fellow would be telling the world the great feat he accomplished in eight years in office,  just in case we missed anything from a distance. But alas, we didn’t miss much, because he didn’t do much.

He’s a bad exemplar of a technocrats as public officials. Very lacklustre.

Now, Obaseki bent on recasting his mold with his kind – Asue.

Unfortunately, Obaseki’s poor aura is already rubbing off poorly on Asue Ighodalo.

Ighodalo, a capital market wonk like Obaseki  appears like a corporate weasel. He seems all about the ability to master the money jungle and being adept at feathering one’s nest. A lifetime of grubbing for lucre can never redound positively on public good. Obaseki just proved it.

Particularly astonishing is that Asue seems to be possessed of an especial disdain for his native land. He can’t speak the tongue, suggesting that he didn’t even bother to mix with his people. Yet he live in Nigeria all the while! That’s inexplicable, almost unpardonable.

It’s the opinion of this column that Asue would be Godwin plus or minus a little –  powerpoint savvy, workshop governor, delivering little real value to the people (he doesn’t quite know them anyways!)

OKPEBHOLO WHO?

APC is at it again. The only kind of candidate APC hasn’t presented for office is a cadaver. They will do so soon if we don’t stop them.  Such is the disdain and contempt with which they hold Nigerians.

They are in a rarefied world of their own. They don’t give a hoot about the people. It’s about the deepest pocket. They would present a primate if that be the highest ‘donor’. Check their specimen from Imo government house  to Kogi and Ogun, to name a few…

Now it’s Okpebholo! One who can’t even complete a sentence. He has refused to grant interviews, just like President Bola Tinubu did the other day.

Like Tinubu again,  this man who wants to govern Edo State has a most opaque past. His entire bio is written in three short paragraphs; it contains only two dates: when he was supposedly born (1972) and when he emerged from the shadows and became a Senate (2023).

No proper records of schooling,  work experience, etc. It’s that eerie, it’s like a ghost seeking to be state  governor! This is as ghoulish as it gets! At least we can verify Tinubu’s sojourned in the US, Okpebholo can’t account for 40 years on his life! No wonder he would never stand for an interview!

THE OSHIOMHOLE/APC CURSE

Lastly,  have you seen former Edo governor,  Adams Oshiomhole on the APC campaign trail lately? He makes an entrée on to the stage bouncing feverishly like balls on fire. He grabs the microphone and lapses into a long gibberish as he is wont. Unknowing electorate would probably mistake him for the candidate. The so-called candidate would only struggle to utter a few words and that’s it.

Oshiomhole desperately seeks a chance to rule Edo by proxy as Bola Tinubu rules Lagos and parts of southwest. He wants to install an ELEYI in Edo as Tinubu installed in Ogun.

But he can’t seem to wrap it around his head that Edo is not Lagos. Edo people long wrote him off. They once ushered him into government house with great expectations. But for eight years, he turned out   like the rest of them as he spent the years managing his loot… and yes, marrying oyibo wife too.

Oshiomhole is a shameless serial liar on the campaign trail. He lied about Buhari,  he lied about Tinubu,  he lied about Ize Iyamu, he lied about Obaseki and now he’s lying about Okpebholo. At 72, you would expect that he would take himself far from the madding crowd. But he has no shame.

Of course,  Oshiomhole represents the ugly face of the APC,  and that’s speaking both literally and metaphorically. APC has proven beyond doubt that it’s a curse upon Nigeria. After only nine years, it would appear  that whoever votes APC again in Nigeria invites a curse upon himself. One supposes that Edo people are far too rational than to wish APC upon themselves. To allow APC in Edo is to wish for a slow death as we are experiencing in Nigeria today!

Without doubt, every Nigerian knows by now that APC never win elections, they are a rigging machine. But of course,  Edo no dey gree, dem go die there on September 21st…

ONE LAST WORD

This column doesn’t know Akpata from anywhere. This report is informed opinion based on decades of public affairs analyses; information available in the public domain and a sampling of the opinion of some knowledgeable Edo indigenes.

In the course of this, it also came out that Olumide is highly opinionated, a bit authoritarian and a bit aloof. At a personal level,  he also seems to be hobbled by matrimonial issues. All of these would seem like small matter  though,  considering the hefty baggage being lugged by the other candidates. But he must deal with them; come clean.

Bottomline

Edo must get it right, we must reclaim our country, Nigeria,  one state at a time.

NFF German Coach Dumps Nigeria, Eguavoen To Lead Super Eagles To African Cup Of Nations

0
Augustine Eguavoen

By Ayodele Oni

Stringent tax law of the German authority may have aborted the dream of the Nigeria Football Federation, (NFF) to sign on another foreign Coach for the national team, the Super Eagles.

The Nigerian football governing body had earlier announced that Coach Bruno Labbadia has been hired and was expected to lead the national team against Benin Republic  in the scheduled

upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches  in Uyo, 7th September and Rwanda, Kigali, 10th September.

As a result of the botched agreement, Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Coach Augustine Eguavoen will now take charge of the Super Eagles.

A statement on Friday evening by the President of NFF, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, confirmed that the deal with the German Coach would have to wait.

The statement reads “Stringent regulations of German tax authorities have conspired to abort the agreement between the Nigeria Football Federation and Coach Bruno Labbadia for the latter to mount the saddle as Head Coach of Nigeria’s Senior Men Team, Super Eagles.

“We have been on the tax issue for the past three days, and I told him clearly that there was no way the NFF will agree to offset the concomitant tax percentage on his salary that will be demanded by German tax authorities.

“It is not possible for us to shoulder the responsibility of shelling out another money, between 32% to 40% of his salary, after paying the agreed monthly wage.

“The NFF and Mr. Labbadia reached an agreement in principle before we made the announcement that he would become the Head Coach of the Super Eagles.

“The tax details were never part of our discussions, and he had personally agreed to all terms before the tax issue came up.

“We were doing our best to be flexible in the discussions but he was adamant that the NFF had to pay the full tax amount as well. We simply cannot do that.

“In the event, Technical Director of Nigeria Football Federation, Coach Augustine Eguavoen will now take charge of the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic (Uyo, 7th September) and Rwanda (Kigali, 10th September).”

It will be Eguavoen’s fourth stint in charge of the three-time African champions, after earlier experience in 2005-2007, 2010 and 2022.

Kano: Supreme Court Forces Shift In Local Government Polls

Supreme Court of Nigeria

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC, on Friday, August 30, 2024, announced the downward review of the date for the forthcoming Local Council Election in the State.

The Election earlier scheduled to hold on November 30, 2024, will now take place on October 26, 2024.

The Chairman of the Commission, Professor Sani Malumfashi, who made this known at a media briefing in Kano, said the change is to align the elections with the mutual pact reached between States and the Federal Government on the modalities for the implementation of the Supreme Court’s pronouncements on Local Government Autonomy .

The Source reports that the Country’s apex Court had, on June 20, 2024, ruled to affirm the financial independence of the third tier of Government.

The Court, also, in the landmark verdict, prohibited the operation of the much abused States and Local Government joint Account JAAC, and ordered that accruals from the Federation Account should be remitted directly to Local Councils Accounts

The Supreme, Court, also, ordered the withholding of funds accruing to Councils being run by undemocratically elected officials.

However, to make for a smooth transition, a three- month window was agreed between the Federal Government and States before  implementing the Supreme court rulings, particularly as regards  the withholding of funds of  Councils under interim administration.

Only Penultimate week, the Federal Government constituted a Committee to oversee the   implementation of the Supreme Court verdict.

Going by the apex Court’s ruling, the window period will end October 2024.

Most Governors have been in a frenzy to organize Council Polls so as to avoid the stoppage of their Councils’ Federal Allocation.

“In recognitions and conformity with the recent Supreme Court decision, the mutual agreement between State and Federal Government, and upon the expiry of the October deadline on Local Government Autonomy, the  Commission is compelled to reschedule the Local Government Election to October 26,2024”, Prof Malumfashi stated.
