Rivers PDP Escalates As Group Gives PDP NWC Two Weeks To Restore Peace

By Akinwale Kasali

A Socio Political Group Ogoni Development Drive, ODD, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the National Working Committee, NWC, of the Party to resolve as quickly as possible the political crisis rocking Rivers State.

The Group stated that the political turmoil in the Party in the State is uncalled for and nauseating, and urged President Bola Tinubu to prevail on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, over some of his provocative utterances capable of setting Nigeria ablaze.

In a statement jointly signed by its convener, Comrade Solomon Lenu, and Celestine Nikiri, secretary, ODD declared that it would be compelled to mobilize against the President’s reelection bid in 2027 if the crisis in Rivers state continues to fester

“Mr. President should rein in the Minister of FCT who has made himself a thorn in the flesh of Rivers people, or forget our support in 2027. In fact, he should relieve him of his position immediately. Wike should stop playing God, because even the questionable support he gave to the PDP when he was Governor was done with Rivers money, and not with his personal money or inheritance”.

The statement noted that if Wike continues to use unprintable words such as the one he used yesterday, (unstable character) ODD shall mobilize Rivers people from all corners of the State to disrespect him in equal measure in a mass protest because he cannot be bigger than the State that made him.

“We give the national leadership of the PDP 14 days to resolve all grey areas in the Rivers state PDP to give Governor Fubara a breathing space failure which we will mobilize massively against the party in the state”.

The group called on Governor Fubara to prevail on the Minister using any legal means to give adequate financial account of his stewardship as Governor of Rivers State for eight years, saying: “This is important because in 2015, Wike accused his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, of leaving empty treasury and not giving him a handover note. Why should Wike do the same to Fubara!

The statement by the Group also added that Wike’s statement about setting on fire the state of any Governor  who interferes in the ongoing crisis in Rivers state was unfortunate, adding that it is a clear evidence that the Minister does not want peace in the State.

The statement also reads: “It is a shame that at a time when the APC government is struggling to stabilize the country economically and security-wise, Wike is busy insulting the sensibility of Nigerians who are presently languishing in abject difficulties by talking about 2027 elections. This is a height of insensitivity”.

By Ayodele Oni

A financial expert, Akindele Omole has tasked the media to expose Nigeria’s untapped resources to the outside world.

He said the media should focus on promoting the positive potentialities of the of the country

to attract foreign and local investors to inject funds in different sectors of the nation’s economy.

Omole, who spoke in Akure on Sunday while commenting on the way forward in tackling the current socio-economic challenges in the country, added that there is the need for the media to focus more attention in the area rather than insecurity.

The chartered accountant pointed out that some countries in the continent have attained greatness through positive projection of their potentials to the outside world.

Omole, who is the Patron of Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists(NUJ), Ondo State called for collaboration between the government the media in the country to project policies being rolled out by government for the resuscitation of the economy.

“The media in our country have a lot to do in promoting the potentials of our country which are capable of attracting investors from within and outside the country.

“We have a lot of untapped natural resources which are enough to turn our nation’s economy around if explored.

“Like in Ondo State, we have the longest coastal line which if appropriately explored could attract a lot of funds to the state and the country through tourism.

“The deep seaport, which has been approved by the Federal Government, is another money-spinning investment that the state government could enter into partnership with both foreign and local investors to kickstart it.

“It has been established that the bitumen is also there which has not been touched.

“We need to reel out these potentials to the world for interested investors to come and invest, which will in no little means turn around the lives of the people in the host communities, the state and the nation at large.

“But I must state unequivocally that you journalists have a lot of role to play in rescuing  the nation’s economy from precipice.”

The Cross River State Government has floated a scheme to engage not less than 100,000 youths in agricultural ventures.

Described as a move to reduce the unemployment rate among its teeming youths, the State government has already flagged off the process of equipping young people with skills to assist them break even, especially in the value chain of agricultural and related productive enterprises.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation, Mr. Johnson Ebokpo Jnr explained that with their skill and potential, Cross River youths should easily become self-reliant rather than roaming the streets in search of white-collar jobs.

Unveiling the Scheme in Calabar, Ebokpo said it would navigate the Cross River out of what he considered multi-dimensional and biting poverty.

Describing it as ‘Project Grow’, the Commissioner told extension officers and other stakeholders at the agriculture value chain workshop that the Scheme had been in the pipeline long before the present administration came into office.

The commissioner stated that the Scheme focuses on boosting food production and raising the income of farmers.

“Through synergy with multilateral agencies, the Project Grow would leapfrog the state into the next level and establish an agro-economy from which thousands of people would be lifted out of multidimensional poverty.”

He disclosed that in the past 30 years, the state has regrettably been unable to have even 10 percent rise in the total output of its food production despite its vast arable land, several agricultural schemes and the huge sums of money invested in such programmes

“We are adopting the Michael Okpara model in our agricultural projects to maximize food production, eliminate wastes and put the state on the map of prosperity and Project Grow will achieve that purpose.”

The Commissioner, maintained that the project would position the state as one of the largest producers of sorghum, maize, cattle fodder, and rice, said.

“With the target of 20,000 hectares of land prepared for small holder farmers and 2,000 already started and the right ecology in place for the production of five value chain which include rice, cassava, aquatic culture, cattle fodder and maize, our governor, Senator Bassey Otu, is creating an economy that would produce billionaires and millionaire.”

Speaking on the Scheme, the Project Grow Director, Mr. Denis Ikpali, said it will address existing challenges in the agriculture sector that include farmers’ inability to access loan facilities from financial institutions, get right inputs, and acquire adequate knowledge on chemical application on farms.

Further highlighting the challenging issues within the agric sector, Ikpali said; “The risks involved in agricultural sector make banks unwilling to extend credit facility to farmers without collaterals.

“Project Grow is to close that gap because our state government has a credit scheme to the tone of N30 billion to guarantee genuine farmers to get loans. The credit is not a grant.”
