With less than six days to the October 21, 2024, Edo State Governorship Election, the Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate, CPPM, a Civil Society Organisation has demanded that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, must conduct a free, fair and credible election.

CPPM made the demand in a press statement issued and signed on Monday,16th, September, 2024, by its Executive Director Nelson Ekujumi. It expressed it’s displeasure and condemnation in of the pockets of violence that has trailed the political campaigns in the State.

According to the statement, the group asserted that: “We have absolute confidence in the ability and competence of the Electoral Umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free, fair and credible election which can only be achieved by all the stakeholders playing by the rules of engagement, because INEC alone cannot do it”.

The organization charged INEC to remain focused, professional and unbiased in the discharge of it’s functions and not allow the usual campaign of blackmail and calumny against it at every election season, to derail or weaken it’s resolve to conduct a successful election like it has always done.

It also called on the security agencies who are also at the receiving end of the smear allegations of all sorts just like INEC, to remain committed to its core functions of maintaining law and order, before, during and after the elections.

The group charged the Media and the accredited observer organizations to maintain neutrality and professionalism in the discharge of their functions during the elections in order to help deepen the tenets of democracy.

The electorate were admonished to eschew violence and keep the peace, before, during and after the election for the progress and prosperity of Edo State which should be uppermost in the minds of every Edolites. The voters were urged to come out enmasse on election day to cast their vote for the candidates of their choice peacefully and orderly.

According to CPPM, “We demand that the political parties participating in the election educate their members on the non-negotiable need to keep the peace before, during and after election”. “We urge dissatisfied parties and candidates with the outcome of the election, to seek redress via the civilized means of engagement and refrain from provoking a breakdown of law and order”.

However, the group condemned the utterances and conduct of the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki who they allege continues to fan the embers of violence in utter violation of his oath and disrespect for his office and wants it placed on record, that Mr. Obaseki should be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order on election day or after.

“Sadly Mr. Obaseki has been reported by the media as promising to make the election a do or die affair and so we are demanding that he be placed on security watchlist as an instigator of violence.

“We equally want to remind the good people of Edo State, Nigerians and the international community, that in September 2020 when Mr. Obaseki was seeking re-election for a second term, on the day of voting, after casting his ballot at his polling station in the morning, Mr. Obaseki made all sorts of allegations of bias and compromise against INEC and the Nigeria Police Force, only for the same Mr. Obaseki to make a 360° u-turn and described the same election he had earlier described as a fraud and compromised, as the best election ever conducted by INEC and went on to heap praises on INEC and the Police for their professionalism, after he was declared the winner and re-elected for a second term.

“As the good people of Edo State go to the polls on Saturday 21st of September 2024 to elect a new helmsman to direct the affairs of the state for the next four years, the Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) is eagerly looking forward to the conduct of a free, fair and credible election which can only be achieved by all the stakeholders observing the rules of engagements in order to deepen our democracy”.

Ondo State Government has challenged the West African Examinations Council, (WAEC) over the seizure of results of some students who participated in the 2024 West African Secondary Secondary School Examination (WASSCE), in public schools in the state.

Reports indicate that some results of public secondary schools students that sat for the examination are still being withheld by WAEC,  even after the state government had paid all the necessary registration fee.

Reacting to the report, Ondo State Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Mr Olaolu Akindolire expressed disappointment over the development, saying WAEC has not given the state government any reason for withholding the results.

He affirmed that the State Government had paid all the necessary registration fee and wondered why WAEC is still withholding the results especially this period when admission into tertiary institutions is ongoing across the country.

The Commissioner said the withholding of the results by WAEC was capable of jeopardizing the hope of securing admission into tertiary institutions by the affected students, and called on the examination body to release the results promptly.

Mr. Akindolire declared that the state government still maintains its zero tolerance posture to examination malpractices and urged WAEC to carry out the necessary verifications to ensure that the affected students were not being unjustly punished.

While sympathizing with the affected students and their parents, the Commissioner assured that the  WAEC, as a reputable examination body does not take pleasure in punishing students without justification, assuring that the withheld results would be released appropriately.

Lagos Model School Fees Hike Protest

By Akinwale Kasali

Parents of Students of Model Schools arcoss the State  have stormed the Lagos State owned institutions to protest the astronomical hike of the  school fees from N35,000 to N100,000.

The Parents lamented that it was unreasonable and insensitive for the Lagos State Government to increase the fees of Model Colleges Boarding Students at a time Nigerians are facing economic hardship, with no reprieve in sight.

On a visit to Model College, Meiran, Parents in their hundreds protested the hike and calld for its immediate reversal.

During the call for the reversal to the initial N35,000, Parents carried placards with various inscriptions that reads, “Let The Poor Masses Breathe”, “No Reversal, No Resumption”, “No To Satanic Increment”, No To N100,000, Yes To N35,000″, “Governor Sanwo Olu Benefitted From Free Education, Why Victimizing Parents”, “Stop Our Pains”.

In a chat, some of the protesting Parents who claimed anonymity, said that they decided to stage this protest to show their displeasure about the hike in the School Fees without prior notice,  and again,  increasing it by over 190 Percent shows that the Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu led Lagos State Government is insensitive and making a anti people policy.

Another Parent queried that it was disheartening that the LASG do not care about the plight of the people, and also do not have the interest of the masses at heart, stressing that the increment was coming at a wrong and shouldn’t have rose to that huge amount.

The Parents also stated that the reason for staging this protest in front of the School is to stop other Parents who believe they are rich and don’t care about others from bringing their wards to school.

The Leader of the Protestants who addressed the other aggrieved Parents but refused his name in print said that the fight and protest are for all Parents who have their Children in all Model Schools, and anyone that believe they can do contrary to the demand of the people will be severely dealt with.

“Any Parents that agree with the N100,000 and believes they can bring their Children to teh school for resumption will be beaten blue black, because we are all in this together.

“When will the government stop taking us for a ride. This is injustice and an affront on the part of the State Government, which we will resist. The School Fees has to be reversed”, he stated.

Model Schools all across the State ought to resume today, but due to the demand for the reversal of the School Fees, and the ongoing protest,  this has stalled the resumption date.

The Parents Association of Model Schools across the State have agreed to meet the Lagos State Ministry of Education on this development, as the Association had earlier stated that it would not accept such increase.

“I Am Not Confused About This Government, I Want To Finish From Here And Go Home” – Governor Uzodimma

0
Hope Uzodimma - Imo State Governor
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State.:

Amid the challenges posed by insecurity in Imo State for years now, Governor Hope Uzodimma has challenged the leaders to join hands with him to ensure the restoration of government at the grassroots.

The Governor who made the call on Sunday at the Government House Chapel, Owerri at the end of the day’s Church service, noted that it should be a source of concern to the Imo leaders that they have abandoned their communities to stay in the cities as a result of insecurity.

Governor Uzodimma said that the Imo State local government election scheduled for September 21, is critical to the extent that it will be an opportunity to “push back government to the grassroots.”

He therefore admonished the leaders, particularly those of the All Progressives Congress extraction, to deemphasize excessive complaints about the chairmanship and councillorship candidates that have emerged from the Party Primaries for the coming election, but focus more on how to join hands with government to deal with the festering insecurity that has caused loss of lives, property and assets in Imo State.

The Governor also advised APC leaders who have been going about mouthing the issue of “turn” in the manner the chairmanship and councillorship candidates were elected, to bear in mind that their turn will still come.

His words: “Those who think it is their turn and have not got it now, we are holding it on trust; you will soon get it; it will get to you.”

Governor Uzodimma who reiterated his earlier promise that the chairmanship and councillorship aspirants who could not make it at the Party Primaries would be paid the amount they spent to buy forms, however called on political appointees at all levels to be ambassadors of government, willing to add value to the system.

He bemoaned what he described as the attitude of some appointees entrusted with public assets, and urged them to “search their consciences” as regards their acts in the offices they occupy.

Governor Uzodimma said that as a person he was not in a hurry to do anything that he will regret after leaving office and cautioned those who think their relationship with him could thrive when he resorts to doing the wrong things.

“I am not confused about this government. I want to finish from here and go home. Prevention is better than cure. We have come to serve Imo State. I am not in a hurry to do anything that I will not be able to interrogate my conscience. Allow me to carry my cross. When we finish we will be remembered for the things we did. I am open to investigation,” the Governor said.

He used the opportunity to thank the leaders and dignitaries who worshipped with him at the Chapel, including the new Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, and sought for stronger collaboration of the federal institutions in Imo State with his government.
