Outrage Greets JSS 3 Science Text Book On How To Undergo Abo*tion,  Education Ministry Feigns Ignorance

JSS 3 Science Text Book

By Akinwale Kasali

Social Media Platforms have been on fire since netizens got the wind of a Junior Secondary School Three Science textbook, which details the process, types, and reasons for aboxxion, as well as family planning.

The said Science Textbook is the Classic Basic Science and Technology for Junior Secondary School Three used by some schools in Nigeria.

The book  published by Thursmay Publishers, is authored by M. Abdussalam, F.A Ibekwe, D.E Akintelure and B.B Akintelure and has the approval stamp of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council on the cover page.

It partly reads, “There are two types of surgical aboxxion. Dilation and curettage (D & C): The cervix is dilated (opened and expanded) and a special instrument is used to scrape or scoop some linings and other materials in the uterus. D&C, also called vacuum aspiration, is used when the pregnancy is under 15 weeks.

“Dilation Evacuation (D & E): This involves dilating the cervix and using narrow forceps to evacuate the embryo that has formed bones. It is more difficult and requires more techniques than a simple D & C. It is used for 15-24 weeks old pregnancy.”

This has sparked outrage and debate among Principals, Parents and Netizens, condemning the Education Ministry for approving such Books for Students within the age range of 13-16 Years.

The post by an X User, Alex Onyia, (formerly Twitter) described the content as inappropriate for learners, raising concerns among parents and educators.

Onyia’s claims that the book “teaches how to perform abo××ions” caused a stir online, with some users condemning it as harmful and promoting se×ual recklessness.

Johnson @Carrotsuite E wrote, “Catch them young. Next is to open Planned Parenthood branches to start harvesting abo×ted babies. Even the reasons written in the book sound absolutely like indoctrination and an inducement to think positively about it from a young age, already promoting a life of se*ual carelessness from a tender age.

“Little surprise that so many don’t see anything wrong with this because they are already indoctrinated through books and movies. If we don’t fight this, we will lose that generation.”

Ogwu Ikechukwu, however, disagreed with Johnson.

“Should teenage girls in JSS3 not be taught about teenage pregnancy and its implications? Should they also not be taught about the dangers of ab**tion? That is the context of the topic. As stated above, the book is also clearly for JSS3 students and not JSS1.”

Tosin Brown added, “An average JSS 3 student is 13 to 16 years old, and they are teenagers. There is nothing wrong with this information for a teenager, and I see nothing wrong with this book.

“Unless we want to lie to ourselves, we have to teach them, or else the world will do so in a negative way. Most of these kids have access to the internet, watch explicit content, and are even more exposed than we parents think. It’s better to teach them to understand the disadvantages.”

Benjamin Chukwudum, in support of Brown’s comment, added, “With all due respect, ma’am, they don’t understand the challenges we face in the hospital. Such education is very appropriate for that age group. In three years, these young people will be fully integrated into society, and this information will help them navigate.

However, others supported its inclusion, arguing that students should be educated about the dangers of abo**ion and teenage pregnancy.

The All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Public Schools, ANCOPPS, and the Parents Teachers Association, PTA, condemned the textbook for containing abo**ion details, insisting it was not part of the approved curriculum.

Musa Ibrahim, ANCOPPS President, affirmed that they had begun investigations and directed principals to seize any copies of the book found in schools.

Ibrahim said, “We have set machinery in motion to ensure that any such books brought into schools will be seized immediately. We have liaised with the Ministry of Education to obtain copies for analysis, and we intend to use this as a point of advocacy with the ministry. We find the contents highly offensive, and school principals have already been instructed to take action.

“We’ve also engaged with PTAs at both the national and state levels, urging them to prevent the use of such books. A similar case occurred with an Integrated Science textbook in Kano, which we are currently tracking down to remove from circulation.

“I have also shared this information with all relevant groups, instructing them to be vigilant. Principals are expected to check books thoroughly and remain on the lookout for any similar material.”

He added, “The information in the book is not part of our curriculum. We teach topics like reproduction and a bit of sexuality in JS three and SS one, but the aim is to ensure that students understand they should not endorse such behaviour. These topics are not meant for JSS 1 students, as they are not included in the curriculum

“They labeled it as ‘s*x education’ or ‘se*uality education,’ but we made it clear that we do not want it, and they should remove it. In the SS classes, reproduction is taught solely for examination purposes, as the students are semi-adults. ANCOPPS does not support this material, and we are taking steps to ensure it is confiscated.”

While some parents and educators believe that teenagers should be taught about reproductive health, others argue that the content is inappropriate for such a young audience.

The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, NAPPS,  also criticised the explicit content, asserting that it was not part of the national curriculum.

National chairman, PTA, Haruna Danjuma, stated, “This is completely unacceptable. Our children can’t be taught how to have an abortion. We will take this to the National Council and the Minister of Education. How did this book get into schools? We are going to fight it.”

National President, Association for Formidable Educational Development, Orji Emmanuel, described the book as “damaging information.”

“It is indeed sad. I have called for action on many occasions when it comes to the education of the Nigerian child; we cannot afford to be too busy with other issues and neglect our collective future,” Emmanuel said.

The National President, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Yomi Otubela, also confirmed that the content was neither in the national curriculum nor the Lagos State Scheme of Work. He told our correspondent that the book was published by Thursmay Publishing.

“Looking through the national curriculum and the Lagos State scheme of work, I couldn’t find any specific topics that taught abortion or pregnancy prevention. However, some topics cover adolescent reproductive systems and how the ovaries work, among others.

“As for why the author included additional reproductive information beyond the curriculum, I cannot say. The curriculum or Lagos State’s guidelines do not include this. Also, I don’t think Lagos State recommended that particular edition of the book.”

The Federal Ministry of Education has denied approving the textbook, with officials stating that the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC, had not authorised it.

Education and health professionals have called for a review of the book, raising concerns about its impact on students’ psychological and moral development.

How Fubara’s Plot To Impeach Speaker Boomeranged –  Wike

Nyesom Wike - FCT Minister

By Adesina Soyooye

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that the move to impeach the Rivers State Speaker of the House Martins Amaewfule  by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, was the reason the Assembly decided to impeach the Governor.

Wike made this revelation while speaking Tuesday night on Channel Television’s Politics Today anchored by Seun Okinbaloye.

Responding to a question on what the problem is between him and his successor in office as Governor, one who he was instrumental to installing as Governor, Wike said the problem began not from him, or with him. It began, he explained, when Governor Fubara, allegedly, planned to impeach  Speaker Martins Amaewfule. The plot, he said boomeranged on the Governor.

The Minister explained that his problem with Fubara did not emanate from a disagreement over money or appointments, as he has never asked for any, but from the Governor’s inability to obey Court orders and observe the rule of law.

Wike’s submission puts a question mark to the long-held strong rumours that he fell out with Fubara over Fubara’s appointment of a Commissioner without Wike’s clearance. All the appointees to offices in Rivers State before the two fell apart, allegedly were done by Wike.

There were, also, allegations that the Governor was servicing Wike to the tune of N2.5bn every month. A source close to the Governor confirmed the monthly N2.5bn, but said it was never a problem between them. The problem, he disclosed, was the one appointment made by the Governor without Wike’s clearance.

But on speaking on Tuesday, Wike said such issues as money and appointments were never a problem between them as it never came up.

Currently, Rivers State has two Speakers of the House of Assembly – one, loyal to Wike, the other, loyal to Governor Fubara.

Recall that Fubara’s problem with his predecessor became public  in 2023 when there was an aborted move to impeach the Governor.

Senate Increases Federal Varsities To 64; Approves Two In Ogun, Kano

Prof Tahir Mamman - Minister of Education

The Nigerian Senate has increased the number of federal universities in the country to 64 following the the passage of bills establishing two universities in Kano and Ogun states.

The senate,  on Tuesday, approved the bills to establish the University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, Kaduna State, and the Federal University of Technology Ilaro in Ogun State.

The federal government had earlier in the year founded two new universities.

According to checks by the magazine, there are currently over 270 universities in Nigeria as of 2024,, 149 were private while state and federal universities added up to 63 and 62, respectively.

The Senate yesterday approved the two universities in Kano and Ogun states following the adoption of a report of the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND on establishments of the university at plenary.

The report for the establishment of te university in Kano was presented by the Chairman, Senator Mohammed Muntari who while making his presentation said, the universities will provide more jobs in the country, reduce youth restiveness, as well as develop the nation’s technological sector.

He said the university proposed received overwhelming support from Nigerians during the public hearing conducted by the committee, noting that the institution would help provide scientific knowledge to environmental challenges in the country.

Muntari said, “The hallmark of the proposed Federal University of Applied Sciences, is to produce graduates well equipped with practical and theoretical grounded knowledge in technology, applied science, commerce and management.

“This will reduce risks and challenges of productivity, data and information, cost benefits, marketing and security bedeviling humanity.

“The establishment of the Federal University will reduce the ills around the national economy and de-escalate chances of entrenching heinous criminal activities being perpetrated by men of the underworld.

“The knowledge and skills that would be acquired by the graduates from the envisaged Act of the National Assembly will definitely go a long way in expanding and deepening the horizon of the graduates in information management,” the senator said.

Meanwhile, not a few Nigerians, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU have lamented the proliferation of government owned universities in the country, citing the paucity of funds to run them effectively.

ASUU, for instance, argue that available funds should be used to fund existing universities instead of establishing new ones.

Rivers’ Anarchy: You Are Responsible, Obey Court Order Wike Tells Fubara

Nyesom Wike and Simi Fubara

The battle for the control of oil rich Rivers state is raging on as the Minister of the Federal capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has accused the state governor, Siminalaye Fubara of being the architect of the recent violence in the state.

The minister, the immediate past  governor of the state made the allegation on Tuesday on Channels Television, saying the governor is responsible for the violence because of his failure to obey the law.

The magazine reported that violence erupted in the state on Monday following the conduct of the local government elections on October 5 by the state government.

No fewer than seven persons were reported killed, dozen other wounded, while four LGA secretariats have also been touched by suspected arsonists.

Governor Fubara and Wike, a former political ally are strongly divided over the election, and their supporters have clashed violently as the battle for the control of the soul of the state rages on.

Governor Fubara has since sworn in the 23 chairmen declared winners by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC.

Speaking on Tuesday, the FCT minister said the governor should be blamed for the violence because he refused to obey the court ordered the election not to hold.

He said under Fubara “our state is turning to a state of anarchy where people did not obey the rule of law”.

According to him, there is a subsisting order from  a federal high court in Abuja stopping the election.

Recall that Governor Fubara also justified the conduct of the election with a ruling from a high court in the state.

Wike however stated that the governor is the ‘architect’ of the anarchy that has now engulfed the entire state, noting that “the moment you don’t obey court judgments, you are inviting anarchy and violence.”

The minsiter said, “When I was governor, I always obeyed the rule of law. You heard the governor said, our state is turning to a state of anarchy where people did not obey the rule of law. What is obeying the rule of law?”

“You must respect and obey the judgment of the court. You must not take the law into your hands. It does not matter how you see that judgment.

“The moment you don’t obey court judgments, you are inviting anarchy and violence. Was that destruction done before now?

“A governor came out on national television to tell the world that I will not obey court judgment.

“In fact, he said there is nowhere in the judgment that the court said the election should not hold. He went so far as to say, I don’t need police before I conduct the election.

“In that case, who is the perpetrator of that violence? It is not about blaming. The governor is the architect of the violence in Rivers.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had on Tuesday, urged Governor Fubara to take charge of the state, the president also directed Kayode Egbetokun , the Inspector General of Police, IGP, to step up security in other to stem the violence.

Victorious Abure demands restitution from Peter Obi

Senator Nenadi Usman, the just Court-sacked Chairman Labour Party Caretaker Committee, has gone on appeal to challenge the sack of her Committee by a Federal High Court, Abuja.

In the aftermath of the sack of sack, the Court-reinstated and recognized Chairman of LP, Barrister Julius Abure, has sent a message to the Leader of the Party and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 Presidential Election, Peter Obi, to join hands with him and make the Party the great Party it is meant to be. But a caveat: Abure asked for restitution from Obi and others for alleged blackmail and assassination of his character.

Abure who was removed along with his National Working Committee by a Stakeholders at a meeting in Umuahia was replaced by a 29-member Committee, headed by Dr Nenadi Usman. The Stakeholders meeting hosted by the Governor of Abia State, LP’s only Governor, Dr Alex Otti, was attended, among others, by Obi. In removing Abure, they said his tenure had long expired, and dismissed the Nnewi Convention which gave Abure and Co. a new term in office as a no-event.

But on Tuesday, Abure was reinstated and confirmed as the National Chairman of the LP by the Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by the Honourable Justice Emeka Nwite.

On reinstatement Abure, in a message to Obi, appealed to the 2023 Presidential Candidate to join him and unify the Party.

In the statement  titled “A New Dawn for the Labour Party: Victory, Forgiveness and Unity,” personally signed by him in reaction to the Court ruling, Abure pleaded for unity and forgiveness.

Justice Nwite, in his ruling, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize  Abure as the legitimate Chairman of the Labour Party.

The Court also endorsed the controversial March 2024 Nnewi convention which constituted the Party’s  National leadership, and ordered INEC to acknowledge its governance.

Celebrating the ruling, Abure said that the victory was not just his,   but to justice and democracy.

He said it affirms the supremacy of the law and the legitimacy of the party’s leadership, and extended an olive branch, to those who he said sought to undermine the party and engaged in character assassination and blackmail against him.

Specifically, he urged Obi and others to join him to  unite the party, and urged them to “consider restitution for the harm they have caused him and others within the party.”

Abure posited that it is by so doing that the Party can move forward and  heal for the good of Nigeria.

But the Nenadi-Usman led Committee is headed for appeal  at the Courts.

In a statement she personally signed, Dr Usman, a former Minister for Finance as well as a former Senator, said the Court case preceded her Committee. However, having inherited and joined the case, would immediately go on appeal.

Her statement reads in full:

“This evening, I met with His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, His Excellency Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary, LP Caretaker Committee). We deliberated on the judgment passed today. The case actually preceded the formation of the Caretaker Committee. However, after being briefed, the Caretaker Committee decided to join the case.

“Consequently, we have resolved to appeal the judgment accordingly.

“I, therefore, call on all party members to remain calm and maintain peace as we continue our reconciliation efforts.

“Senator Nenadi Usman, Ph.D.
Chairman, Labour Party Caretaker Committee”

Recall that in the heat of the crisis, the Abure-led LP National Leadership said it had withdrawn and thrown open the Presidential and Abia Governorship tickets for 2027 General Elections which the Party, under his watch, had offered Obi and Otti respectively.
