The Nigerian Police Force has strongly defended arraignment of underaged for engaging in nationwide protest insisting that individuals above the age seven can legally face charges in court.

Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Channels TV was reacting to public criticism surrounding the arraignment of young #EndBadGovernance protesters at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Adejobi explained that the legal framework allows minors as young as seven to be charged, provided that specific procedures are followed to ensure due process.

“Those exempt from criminal liability under the law are those below seven. Once you are above seven, you can be charged to court.

“The only consideration is the specific procedures required. None of them is younger than seven. The youngest is around 13.

“The fact that someone is 13 does not mean they cannot be charged to court. Even under the Children and Young Persons Act, individuals can still be charged. We have charged them on behalf of the Federal Government.”

Labour Party, (LP)  Ondo State Chapter, has protested the exclusion of its candidate, Olusola Ebiseni. from a live debate by Channels Television on the Ondo State Governorship Election scheduled for the 16th  November.

The interview is scheduled to be aired on Sunday for candidates of the ruling APC and PDP.

A statement by Olu Egbodofo,

Director of Publicity, LP,  stated that the TV station should not

mislead the people of the State about assessment of the status of the political parties and quality of the candidates for the election.

“For the avoidance of any doubt, Channels and Seun Okinbaloye have organized Governorship candidates’ debate in Ondo State in 2012, 2016 and 2020 for not less than 3 candidates at any point and at no time was the subjective and unfair terms of leading candidates with a view to manipulate the choices of the people, ever used to determine participation.

“For the avoidance of any doubt Labour Party is the first political party since 1999 to have been voted two terms and administered Ondo State from 2009 to 2017 in which outstanding Government Chief Olusola Ebiseni and Adedayo Awude its Governorship and Deputy Governorship candidates in this election were Commissioners.

“Labour Party is the immediate predecessor of the present APC administration in Ondo State and one of the  largest parties in Nigeria today contrary to the deliberate politically injurious advert by Channels.

“We wish to let the world know that our party and candidates are available for this debate, even at this eleventh hour.

“We are still sceptical that Channels will lend itself to the deliberate rigging of the Ondo State Governorship Election by pre-judging the capacities of political parties and their candidates.

“If it cannot be fair to the parties, candidates and give the people of Ondo State fair opportunities to choose their leaders, let Channels respect  its reputation and put this charade of a debate on hold.”

Trial Of Minor Protesters: Angry Nigerians Lash out At Tinubu, IGP

The Inspector General of Police Kayode Egentokun  has come under serious attack over his comments on the trial of some teenagers who took part in the August #endbadgovernance protests.

The magazine reports that global criticism greeted yesterday’s trial after some minors, who are  among those being tried, collapsed in the court room.

Checks by the magazine indicate that 28 minors and 86 adults are currently undergoing trial in Abuja, the nation’s capital for taking part in the August protests.

While reacting to the backlash that has trailed the trial, the IGP alleged that protesters who collapse during the trial, were pretending to draw attention and sympathy from the public.

In a statement by the Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police said the event was ‘scripted’ by the protesters to attract attention.

The police said the fact that the offenders are minors will not prevent them from answering for their alleged crimes, saying the trial is in line with global best practices.

Part of the statement said, “Today, an unexpected incident in court saw six of the suspects suddenly rush out and faint, drawing media attention in a deliberate and scripted manner to attract negative attention. Medical aid was promptly provided to these individuals, demonstrating the Police Force’s commitment to the welfare of those in its custody, irrespective of the allegations they face.

“This principle aligns with global practices, where accountability is upheld for young individuals who commit serious offences. As seen in other jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, age does not exempt individuals from facing legal consequences. However, each case is approached with empathy and in accordance with human rights standards.’

Not a few people have trenchantly lashed out at the government for putting the teenagers on trial because they took part in the protest, staged by many Nigerians to force the government to address the hunger and hardship in the country, two months ago.

Nigerians are even angrier with the shameless manner the minors were arraigned in court yesterday.

Some ofthem took to their social media handles to attack the government’s indiscretion in handling the trial.

While reacting to the issue Souljah @jeffphilips said the authority “only sound confident with strength like this when the alleged crimes involve the poor and the vulnerable. When it comes to the elite, they’ll be stammering and elusive. Just ask him about Yahaya Bello and hear what he’ll say.’

Also, Birdeye Unfiltered @Birdeye2022 described the trial as heartless. “It’s disgraceful for government lawyers to argue that these young demonstrators are adults when they’re clearly minors. Claiming they’re married or university students to deny their rights is heartless and unjust. These children, fighting for a better future, endure inhumane treatment and malnourishment in detention, even collapsing in court. This shameful disregard for the vulnerable must be confronted. How long can we can’t stay silent?” he said.

Bashir El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives and son of the immediate past governor of Kaduna state while reacting on his X handle via @BashirElRufai, said the “Minors Protesting Against Hunger Brought For Arraignment Faint In Court Due To Malnutrition.”

Haruna Dahiru Garkawy🇳🇬@ddharunaa in his reaction said “The north will remember” Tinubu for putting the protesters, who are predominantly northerners on trial for protesting because they are hungry.

On his part, Bello Aminu @MalAminuBello compared President Tinubu to the notorious bandits Bello Turji, after detaining the protesters for more than two months in prison. “What’s the distinguishing feature between Tinubu’s ill-prepared govt and the Turji clan? You detain innocent children for weeks without proper food simply to protest the nation’s dire state. Now, you drag them to court in this pitiful condition,” he said.

Those that have criticised the federal government over the incident include human rights bodies such as the Amnesty International, SERAP amongst others.

Prominent Nigerians that have lashed out at the government include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a former Minister of Education Obby Ezekwesili, Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. Lateef Fagbemi has demanded the case file of the trial, amidst calls on the government to pardon the protesters.

“Stopping Fund Allocations To Rivers Could Lead To Deaths” – Peter Obi

By Adesina Soyooye

Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Governorship Election, Peter Obi, has lamented the ruling of a Federal High Court Abuja which stopped the allocation of funds to Rivers State by the Accountant General of the Federation, the Central Bank of Nigeria and two Commercial banks.

In a ruling on Wednesday, the Honourable Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, said that the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, was in breach of the Constitution when he presented the 2024 Budget to a four-member House of Assembly.  She, therefore, declared the implementation of the budget by the Governor null and void, and stopped all Fund Allocations to the State forthwith.

But lamenting the situation, Obi called on well-meaning Nigerians to weigh-in and stop the calamity afoot.

Writing on his X handle Obi noted that the halting of  allocations to Rivers State by the Court,  and the consequences  thereof, calls for immediate attention because it has the capacity to  push Rivers State citizens into “distress and untimely deaths” as it could compound their challenges.

Obi: “In my political trajectory, I have consistently refrained from name-calling or engaging in personal disputes, choosing instead to focus on issues that directly impact the masses, particularly the suffering poor of Nigeria.

“Despite the national attention the Rivers state crisis has gained, I have largely stayed away from matters specific to a state, but a recent court judgment halting allocations to the state—and the resulting consequences—demands attention.

“This curious decision now calls upon every well-meaning individual- Nigerian to appeal for its immediate reversal.

“Consider the pensioner struggling to survive on a meager income alongside the health workers, school teachers, civil servants, and everyday citizens whose lives are already marked by severe hardship.

“How much more can they endure? This latest development risks pushing them even further into distress—even into untimely deaths—by compounding the challenges they face each day.

“As leaders—whether in the Executive, Legislative, or Judicial – our decisions, and actions should be guided by a commitment to the well being of the less privileged and vulnerable among us.

“As we work toward a better future for all, we must genuinely care about the poor and prioritize the well-being of every Nigerian. What we do today should lay the foundation for a new Nigeria that is possible.”

The stoppage of funds to Rivers State in a case instituted by the Martin Amaewhule-faction of the House of Assembly has been greeted by outrage.

Welcoming the governor and his entourage, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who was represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, acknowledged the enduring and symbiotic relationship among residents of Ondo state, indigenes and non-indigenes alike.

“The appointment of three Kogi indigenes as Special Assistants to the Governor is an eloquent testimony to this ensuring relationship.”

He appreciated the effort of the Kogi state governor and his team for coming to Ondo state to interact with the people and canvass for more support, especially from non-indigenes of Kogi extraction.

By Ayodele Oni

There are clear indications that the striking member of the Non Academic Staff Union of Universities, ((NASU) currently on strike may return to work next week.

At the end of a meeting with Government representatives during the week, the leadership of the union vowed to continue with the strike following failure of government to give specific time the outstanding salaries would be paid.

Indication, however, emerged on Saturday that the Federal Government has released funds for the payment of withheld salaries to the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU).

This is a conciliatory step by the Federal Government in addressing long-standing salary arrears and supporting federal university staff, some of whom have embarked on strike.

The announcement came from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) in a statement by Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations, on Saturday.

According to the OAGF, the Federal Government has also allocated funds to cover benefits for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS), further demonstrating its commitment to honouring pension obligations.

Mokwa added that payments have commenced, with numerous NASU members confirming receipt of their salaries.

“This release is anticipated to alleviate financial pressures faced by university staff and contributes to stabilizing the public university system.

“The Federal Government remains committed to efficiently catering to the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees,” the OAGF statement reads demonstrating ongoing efforts to ensure prompt financial support for public sector workers and pensioners by the government.

It added that the development is part of broader measures aimed at resolving financial grievances within Nigeria’s higher education sector and improving the welfare of both active and retired personnel.

Proposed Tax Reform Bills Should Go Through Legislative Process – President Tinubu

Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President

By Ayodele Oni

President Bola Tinubu has maintained that the proposed Tax reforms should be allowed to go through the legislative process.

He stated that the process has already begun, and will provide an opportunity for inputs and necessary changes without withdrawing the bills from the National Assembly.

The president spoke when he received the National Economic Council’s (NEC) recommendation that the tax reform bills already sent to the National Assembly be withdrawn for further consultation.

President Tinubu commended the NEC members, especially Vice President Kashim Shettima and the 36 State Governors, for their advice.

A statement by the special adviser media, Bayo Onanuga, stated that “The president believes that the legislative process, which has already begun, provides an opportunity for inputs and necessary changes without withdrawing the bills from the National Assembly.

“While urging the NEC to allow the process to take its full course, President Tinubu welcomes further consultations and engagement with key stakeholders to address any reservations about the bills while the National Assembly considers them for passage.

“When President Tinubu set up the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform in August 2023, he had only one objective: to reposition the economy for better productivity and efficiency and make the operating environment for investment and businesses more conducive. This objective remains more critical even today than ever before.

“The Committee worked for over a year and received inputs from various segments of society across the geopolitical zones, including trade associations, professional bodies, different Ministries and Government Agencies, Governors, traders, students, business owners, and the organised private sector.

“The tax reform bills that emerged were distilled from the extensive work of the Presidential Committee.

“The tax bills before the National Assembly aim to streamline Nigeria’s tax administration processes, completely overhaul the nation’s tax operations, and align them with global best practices.

“President Tinubu will continue to respect and welcome the advice and recommendations of the National Economic Council, an essential constitutional organ of government on economic matters.”
