Why I Wrote Soyinka’s Metamorphosis: Echos From The  People’s Mandate

0
Wole Soyinka

By Sunny Igboanugo

Today I formally announce the publication of my book, titled: Soyinka’s Metamorphosis: Echoes from “The People’s Mandate,” a copy of which has just arrived from the UK where it was published. It is a direct response to the book: Baiting Igbophobia, The Sunny Igboanugo Thesis authored by Prof. Wole Soyinka and released sometime in January this year.

This 2024 marks my 33 years of practice as a journalist, starting from my debut with The Guardian in 1991 to Daily Independent and now Publisher of Whirlwindnews, an online newspaper.

My career, like those of many of my colleagues, has been marked with the ups and downs prevalent with the practice of the profession in Nigeria. As a cob reporter still learning the ropes, I was nearly mobbed by angry workers at St. Bridget College, Asaba where some of them who left Benin after Delta State was created from the old Bendel, by the Ibrahim Babangida regime in 1991, were quartered for lack of accommodation.

One evening, few days after arriving the city as the first reporter of The Flagship, posted to the new state, I had undertaken a discreet, but purely noble mission to investigate and ascertain the condition of the workers in their temporary abode. But the mission soon blew into my face, because the affected workers whose emotional state of reasoning appeared to have been held in place by a thin line due to the sudden change in their condition, and threatening to snap at any moment, soon became suspicious.

Soon, the line of inquiry and general mannerism, which betrayed my level as a rookie, triggered off a volley of questions from some palpably edgy staff, who were supposed to be my sources. They soon suspected I was a criminal on a recce mission to survey their territory for later night attack. It was only by the intervention of providence that I was saved from the obvious lynching that could probably have included being ringed with tyre, laced with petrol and set on fire.

Again, today, I carry the physical and psychological lacerations of the aftermaths of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential elections as a believer and direct participant in the attempt to revalidate that historic mandate, which has since been achieved today. So involved was I that when the UN Special rapporteurs arrived Enugu where I was later transferred to investigate the rights abuses associated with the June 12 struggle, I was one of the candidates they interviewed privately.

Again, in 2007, a state governor took four pages each in virtually all newspapers in Nigeria to denigrate me as blackmailer, who went to government houses around Nigeria harassing governors for money. This was a governor I never ever met in person, either in his private or official capacity even till date. My only crime was insisting in my media interventions relating to and on the sanctity of the tenure of the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo during their crisis that year and thereabouts.  This same governor, even took out a lawsuit against me some years after and was sustaining the move to have me jailed on no account order than my purely professional duties until providence – that fate that helps tailless-cow to chase away flies ensured that he never made it back for a second term.

Why did I travel this far through the route of memory? It is to underscore that that I am not new to the travails embedded in this profession, which I love so much that I beg my creator that should I return to this part of life again, I should be allowed to practice. The three examples above are just samples of them.

Though the joy of the glorious moments, sometimes far outweighs the pains, trials and tribulations are still numerous and, in many cases, life-threatening. Yet, none of these, has brought me to the devastating level distress I experienced in the last few months, since this book by Prof. Soyinka.

It almost brought me to the state of emotional wreck. The said book, under his INTERVENTION SERIES, was in response to my article of September 19, 2023. In the book, only a scant mention of the content of the article mas made.

The rest was devoted to attack on my Igbo identity. If the sage, had descended on me as a person, if he had reduced me as less than Nebuchadnezzar, as he once labelled, former President Goodluck Jonathan, I would have remained mute and probably continued with my trade the way I know it. Reading the book itself, he did exactly that. But he did not stop at describing my persona in the most terrible terms or attacking my professional competence, for which there would not have been any form of riposte.

My pain was the attempt by the Prof. to strip me of my identity as a Nigerian and closet me in purely ethnic straightjacket. There was nothing in the original piece from me that suggested any ethnic link by any stroke imagination. The only link I tried to establish was that the NADECO affinity the Nobel Laureate shares with President Bola Tinubu as veterans of the June 12 struggle was the binding factor. I tried to explain how, having struggled together through the thick and thin of the NADECO era they had developed the compelling need to watch each other’s back no matter the circumstances. I argued that such relationship would naturally create personal indebtedness too difficult to break. That was all my piece was all about. Even though there were one or two factual errors, which the Prof. pointed out in his book, they did not detract from the texture of the reasoning that formed the basis for holding my views. The emphasis was on the affinity that existed between the two.

I was completely aghast when the Prof. took the issue completely out of context and veered into ethic labelling. That the Prof. would take that route is my idea of metamorphosis. I would not in my wildest imagination assume that the Soyinka of The Man Died fame would descend into such arena occupied by less-endowed in the society.

That informed my determination to reply by perhaps telling my own story to establish my true identity and insist on it. In fact some people still latching on similar ethnic sentiments, tried to dissuade me by pulling up what they advertised as the pro-Biafra sentiments of the Prof. That even strengthened my position, because I believe such a figure who stood against bad hand that was dealt the Igbo people of Biafra at such a young age, should even do more now that age has added more insight and knowledge to him.

I believe my reply would reactivate his memory and remind him who he truly is in the history of Nigeria. It was a duty I felt compelled to do. How did the Igbo come into such a plain discourse? So, an Igbo man cannot contribute to any subject in today’s Nigeria without being told from whence he is coming? That is the essence of this book. To think of it,  this book is therefore, a PROTEST!  I am not only protesting with this book as an individual, but to draw global attention to the dangerous trend that has become the lot of Ndigbo today, where they are being deliberately targeted as the culprits to anything that goes wrong in the country.

I am insisting that nobody can take away my Nigerianess. I am aware that I am a global dwarf compared to the dominating image of Prof. Wole Soyinka globally. I do not compete with him or attempt to do so in any way. His own book is as usual, already making waves nationally and internationally like many other of his works.

Mine may make little impact. But whatever impact it makes, even if it is read by one person, I will be glad that someone outside myself would have heard my story. That is why I am happy today. For the first time in months, I have once again regained some level of happiness. I have told my story, from my little corner of the world space. Let Prof. Wole Soyinka have the world stage, but allow me to have my corner where my voice, no matter how tiny will be allowed to echo. That is my prayer.

Of course, aside my protest, I have also used this book to try and tell the full story based on my views and how I captured the 2023 general election, particularly that of the presidential polls of February 25. It is a full package that tried to puncture some of the assertions out there in the public domain, including those made by the Nobel Laureate made regarding the election.

I tried to capture the full sequence of events, their meaning and how they affected the outcome of the election in the most unbiased manner and in the end declared who I believe won the election between Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

In the end, just as I spoke some 31 years ago on June 12, I spoke as professionally as any individual in the book. I shall continue to do so. I spoke yesterday, I shall speak today and I shall speak tomorrow. I shall not only speak as an Igbo, I shall speak as a Nigerian with my full chest. Just like Prof. Wole Soyinka, a Yoruba or Adamu, an Hausa will speak.

Obi’s Position On Churches And Worship – Media Office

0
Peter Obi

The attention of the Peter Obi Media Reach, POMR, has been drawn to a huge twist in his recent media interview, saying erroneously that he called for the dismantling of Churches in Nigeria.

By the headline given to the interview, the import of OBI’s message has been greatly overturned and grossly distorted to serve a mischievous end.

The Labour Party leader is well known as a man of strong faith who has enormous respect and love for every religion and tried in the referenced interview to bring to Nigerians how religion can be more effective in their lives.

Obi, in the interview, was merely underscoring what Apostle James said in (James.2.14)” Faith without Works is unhelpful” and in  (James2.24) “You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone”

When Obi said that he would turn night vigil into production night, he was only stressing the importance of worshipping God through work.

Even Jesus Christ never picked any of his 12 disciples where they were praying but where they were working: fishermen, tax collectors, etc.

Proverbs 14:23 even copiously explains what happens if you fail to work: “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”

What we are doing in Nigeria, which is what Obi’s interview is highlighting as wrong and should discontinue is exchanging work for prayer when the two should go together.

There is no evidence in the scripture where Jesus Blessed an idle person; rather, we see abundant evidence of him blessing hard work as captured in the Parable of the Three Servants (Mathew 25 Vs14-30). The servant who delivered greater profit out of harder work got a bigger blessing.

The problem In some of Nigeria’s worshipping  communities  is that they are not following St James advisory(James.1.22) that we should be ‘doers of the words’

So, Peter Obi’s media office wishes to put it in an unmistakable tone that the slant being given to our Principal’s interview by some media houses negates the essence and should be disregarded.

As a man whose campaign mantra is on taking Nigeria from consumption to production, and watching the country going down because of lack of production, Obi’s message should resonate properly away from the intention of mischief makers.

Obi’s two main quotes in the interview “It’s attractive, politics and church, but it has to be dismantled”

“ We are going to turn night vigil into night shift so that people can be productive.” All try to explain what is wrong in our worshipping culture that should change so that we can be in a good state of mind and body while glorifying our creator.

“Religious Night Vigil Should Be Stopped, Turned To Night Shift For Productivity” – Peter Obi

By Adesina Soyooye

“I go to Church and I believe in God. But we can’t have it that people, Monday to Friday, be in Church morning and night – Obi”

Given a chance, there are two things Peter Obi, Nigeria’s main opposition voice and Presidential Candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 Election will demystify.

They are politics and Church.

A combination of the two, Obi said, is dangerous for Nigeria. Between the two, Nigeria has been rendered unproductive.

Obi, a staunch Roman Catholic and an unrepentant supporter of the Church and all religious activities admitted that both the Church and politics are attractive, but need to be “dismantled.”

In snippets from “Honest Bunch Podcast” shared with Nedu, a Media Personality, Obi said, for instance, that night vigil should be turned into night shift to make people productive.

He, also, lamented  a situation where from Monday to Friday, people are in Church, morning and night, and pointed out that everywhere one goes to, the only sign boards one sees are those of Churches.

Obi: ” It’s attractive, politics and Church, but it has to be dismantled.

“We are going to turn night vigil into night shift so that people can be productive.

“I go to Church and believe in God  but we can’t have it that people, Monday to Friday, be in Church morning and night.

“If I go from here to my house, the only sign boards you see are those of Churches.

“That’s not a country”, he lamented.

Health Minister Laments Influx Of Fake Condoms

0
Muhammad Pate - Minister of Health

By Akinwale Kasali

The influx of fake Condoms in the country has become a major concern to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate. But he said the Federal Government is working to minimise its and influx as well as other items into the Nigerian market.

The Minister stated this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Pate said: “There are things that should not be in our system that actors may find ways to compromise and those are the minority.

“Over the years, we have seen a reduction in those kinds of things. Somebody may hide in their room, create something that is substandard and get it into the market. That is what we are trying to curtail to the barest minimum.”

It would be recalled that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control, NAFDAC, had raised an alarm on the circulation of an unregistered condom called Foula condoms.

NAFDAC, in a statement, said the product which is usually packed in 3s, was discovered in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital and in Zango, Kastina State.

NAFDAC said the discovery was made by the officials of the post-marketing Surveillance Directorate (PMS) while carrying out a Risk-Based Post Marketing Surveillance study on registered condoms in Nigeria.

“The condom is not registered by NAFDAC for use in Nigeria, and the labelling of the product is not in the English Language.

“Condoms are a proven effective barrier method that can be used as a dual-purpose method for both prevention of unintended pregnancy and protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. To be most effective, any barrier method used for contraception or preventing infection must be used correctly.”

It stated that the illegal distribution or sale of unregistered condoms poses a risk as the safety, quality, and efficacy of the products are not guaranteed.

“The purchase and use of poor-quality condoms will adversely affect every aspect of condom promotion for the prevention of unintended pregnancy, and protection against HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections. If condoms leak or break, they cannot offer adequate protection,” NAFDAC warned.

Gov Adeleke Orders Surveillance Of Overhead Bridge In Osun

Ademola Adeleke - Osun State Governor
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State.

By Ayodele Oni

To prevent frequent sponsored attacks, and vandalization at the popular Olaiya Bridge, in Osogbo, Osun state, Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed security agencies to protect the facility.

According to a statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, on Saturday, the directive followed reports of a false alarm alleging deliberate sabotage of the bridge—a rumour interpreted as a potential plan to blame an attack on the government.

The statement clarified that there was no human-initiated attack on the bridge, as claimed by the opposition.

Instead, a trailer reportedly struck a section of the bridge, as confirmed by the police. He dismissed the allegations of a government-sponsored attack as “mere fake news.”

To prevent the opposition from leveraging the incident for sabotage to implicate the government, Rasheed disclosed that the Governor has instructed security agencies to bolster security around the bridge, protecting it from possible attacks by fifth columnists aiming to blame the government.

“The report available to the state government suggests that elements within the opposition may be planning to tamper with the bridge structure and then blame the government.

“This is to support their fabricated claim that the state government intends to demolish the bridge.

“Mr Governor has therefore directed service commanders to surveil the bridge and apprehend any fifth columnists engaging in infrastructural terrorism to face the full weight of the law.

“Governor has also reiterated his satisfaction with the ban on heavy-duty trucks from crossing the bridge, as recommended by the state security council.

“This aligns with practices in other major cities to protect such structures from deterioration or potential collapse due to excessive loading.

“There is no plan to demolish Olaiya Bridge. Our goal is to safeguard it against overburdening and overloading that may lead to structural collapse over time.

“The bridge is a state asset, and I have a duty to secure and protect it.”

On the Okefia/LAMECO overhead bridges, the Governor commended the contractor for executing the project in line with global standards, as seen in Europe and North America.

“I inspected the dualization of the overhead bridges privately this week. With opinions from the Nigerian Society of Engineers and experts who have worked on similar flyovers worldwide, I am proud of the quality of work delivered by our local engineers.”

He expressed deep concern over the spate of violent criminal activities, and killings in the State of late.

He urged the police and other security agencies to work in concert with the various communities to fish out. and prosecute those behind the spate of killings.

Gov Yusuf  Moves To Return Arraigned EndBadGovernace Minors Back To Kano

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Following the public outrage that has continued to trail the arraignment of some minors on Friday, the Kano state Governor Abba Yusuf has directed the immediate return  of the minors  back to Kano.

The Source reports that the Police had arraigned about 72  minors arrested during the EndBadGovernance protest across the country at an Abuja Federal High Court .

During the arraignment, four  of the minors, apparently due to lack of food and general care collapsed. That triggered wide spread  indignation among most Nigerians.

The Minors who were looking unkept and malnourished were rounded up majorly from Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Abuja and Plateau States during the EndBadGovernance protest.

The ten-day protest against hunger was mainly characterized by violence, looting, destruction and arson in states like Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, and Gombe.

Besides, the destruction and burning of several public and private properties, protesters also brandished national flags of foreign countries, particularly that of Russia, a development the Federal Government branded treasonable.

Governor Yusuf at the weekend, directed the State Attorney General, and Commissioner for Justice to do everything legally possible to return Kano indigenes among the minors back to the state.

Writing on his official site Governor said: ” My attention has been drawn to the appearance of teenagers (some believed to be from Kano) in Court in Abuja .

“The Commissioner for Justice has been instructed to act immediately on the issue. We shall do everything possible to get them back to Kano in sha Allah'”

The minors who are being prosecuted on terrorism, arson and treasonable charges, were on Friday granted bail each to the tune of N10 million.

$2bn Renewable Energy Investments In Nigeria: Reps Invite Stakeholders To Investigative Hearing

Nigerian House of Representatives

The House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy has invited stakeholders to an investigative public hearing on the $2 billion renewable energy grants and investments meant for the development of the renewable energy sector in Nigeria, which has not made a commensurate impact on the energy security challenges in the nation.

The public hearing which is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, November 5th and Wednesday, November 6th, 2024, follows the mandate given to the Committee by the House of Representatives on Thursday June 6, 2024, to investigate Ministries, Departments, and Agencies with dealings in investment, procurement, and receipt of grants for the development of the renewable energy sector.

According to a statement by the chairman of the committee,  Victor Afam Victor, on Sunday in Abuja, the probe will cover the period from 2015 to 2024.

Ogene said that the House was miffed that “Despite government attracting over $2 billion in renewable energy investments in the past decade, as reported by the Rural Electrification Agency in 2023, there has been no noticeable improvement in the sector.

“The House of Reps was alarmed that the dysfunctional electricity generation and supply system persists, contrary to the objectives behind government investments and grants aimed at developing the renewable energy sector, hence the resolution to probe these investments in order to determine the integrity of the procurement and execution processes.”

He said the investigation is not to witch-hunt but to discourage opaqueness and promote transparency and objectivity in handling government or public resources.

He thanked the European Union and other donor agencies for their useful submissions, insights and cooperation in sharing information with the committee.

The resolutions of the House were sequel to the adoption of a motion titled “Need to Investigate Investments in Renewable Energy Sector and Foreign Grants received from 2015 till date”, sponsored by the lawmaker representing Oshodi-Isolo II Federal Constituency, Lagos State, Okey-Joe Onuakalusi.

Leading the debate, the lawmaker had said the parliament was aware that poor electricity generation, transmission and distribution constituted a huge threat to the nation’s quest for industrial and technological development.

According to the lawmakers, successive governments since 2015 have made substantial investments and attracted multimillion-dollar foreign grants to the renewable energy subsector of Nigeria’s power industry to create a viable and sustainable alternative energy supply.

They noted that in December 2023, the World Bank approved a $750 million facility to boost renewable energy in Nigeria, with the goal of providing over 17.5 million Nigerians with improved access to electricity through distributed renewable energy solutions.
They also noted that in 2020, the federal government launched a $200 million renewable energy project, tagged ‘Nigeria Electrification Project, NEP,’ aimed at providing off-grid energy to over 500,000 people across 105,000 households in rural communities, funded by the African Development Bank, AfDB.

The invited agencies and stakeholders include, but are not limited to Rural Electrification Agency, Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, NSIA, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, NASENI Solar Energy Ltd, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Country Representative European Union, Union Bank Plc (Compliance Department), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Federal Ministry of Power, Energy Commission of Nigeria and Federal Ministry of Finance.

Others are, Niger Delta Power Holding Company, Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Federal Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management, Federal Ministry of Petroleum (Gas Resources), Niger Delta Development Commission, United States Agency for International Development, Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Accountant General of the Federation, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Associations (Alliance) REEEA-A
and Other Concerned Stakeholders.

16 Year-Old Who Poisoned Ex-Boyfriend

By Akinwale Kasali

A-16 year old teenager, Aisha Suleiman, who poisoned her ex-boyfriend, identified as Emmanuel, and four other young men in Afashio community in the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State has been arrested by Policeman attached to the Edo State Police Command.

It would be recalled that Aisha, who poisoned  her ex- boyfriend and four others was reported on October 26, 2024, when Emmanuel’s father,  Elogie Ezekiel, arrived at his son’s apartment around 6:30 a.m and saw some lifeless bodies in the house.

Ezekiel reportedly found the body of a young man, Nurudeen, in the corridor.

Moving further into the apartment, he discovered Emmanuel, 19, and his girlfriend, identified as Ada Samuel, also 16, lying lifeless on the bed in the bedroom.

Two other friends of Emmanuel’s, Samuel and Jeffrey Ayegwalo, both siblings, were found unresponsive in the sitting room.

All five were immediately transported to the hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.

Sources in the area disclosed the victims had just consumed a pot of pepper soup prepared by Suleiman for the five friends.

The investigation took a significant turn three days later when police received a report that Suleiman, who was alleged to have poisoned the victims, was about to be lynched by a group of young men from the community.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Yamu, told our correspondent on Friday that Police Officers from the Jattu Division were quickly mobilised to the scene, intervened, and transported Suleiman safely to the station.

“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation,” Yamu added.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Umoru Ozigi, has ordered a detailed investigation, instructing officers to pursue every possible lead to determine the true cause of death in the case.

He also warned against any form of mob action, urging the community to allow the police to carry out their duties. CP Ozigi reassured the public that justice would be pursued diligently.
