Brigadier General YD Ahmed - NYSC DG

By Ayodele Oni

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, (NYSC), Brigadier General YD Ahmed, has commended the Corps members who participated in the Ondo State governorship election on Saturday.

The commendation was made by the DG after monitoring the election across the state alongside other members of the management team.

Represented by the Director of Corps Welfare and Health Services, Mr Omotade Ayodele, the NYSC boss noted that the comportment displayed by the Corps members demonstrated that there is still hope for the country.

Ahmed, who covered both Akure and Ondo Zones and visited several wards and polling units, expressed his satisfaction, stating that the Corps members did not disappoint the scheme.

“At the start of this sensitive assignment, I had no doubt that my children would perform excellently, but as human beings, it is difficult to be certain until the task is completed.

“You have all done marvellously well, and I want to thank you on behalf of the NYSC family nationwide for your excellent service delivery.”

He said that all participating Corps members maintained the integrity of the Service, thereby strengthening the existing collaboration between the Scheme and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He acknowledged the overall success of the programme across the 18 Local Government Areas, but noted that some areas experienced unpleasant incidents, as a few hoodlums acted in an uncivilised manner.

In his assessment of the overall conduct of the election, the Chief Corps Welfare Officer nationwide criticised the misconduct of some security personnel who neglected their duties during skirmishes caused by local residents.

Some youth corps members that served as presiding officers at certain Centres were harassed by suspected political thugs for refusing to act their scripts.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had uploaded 92.09 percent of the results from polling units in the Ondo State Saturday’s governorship election.

Out of 3,933 polling units across the state, results from 3,622 units had been successfully uploaded to INEC’s portal.

This progress underscores INEC’s commitment to utilising technology for timely and transparent election results collation.

Observers and political stakeholders continue to monitor the process closely, with the remaining results expected to be uploaded.

The rapid pace of result collation has drawn commendation from some quarters, though concerns raised earlier in the day regarding allegations of vote-buying and technical challenges with BVAS devices remain points of contention.

As the final collation progresses, the electorate and political parties eagerly await the official announcement of the election outcome possibly early Sunday.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti  has commiserated with the Nigerian Army over the killing of five soldiers by yet-to-be-identified assailants at the boundary town of Umuopara, in Umuahia South local government area.

This was contained in a letter  written to the Nigerian Army regarding the recent attack on an army checkpoint in Umuahia, which resulted in the deaths of some soldiers.

The letter, dated November 14, 2024, and personally signed by Governor Otti, was addressed to the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede. It was made available to the press on Saturday.

The Governor said: “It is with a deep sense of loss that I write to commiserate with you over the unfortunate and barbaric killing of five soldiers by yet-to-be-identified assailants at the boundary town of Umuopara, in Umuahia South LGA of my state.

“Indeed, this unwarranted and mindless attack targeted at our gallant soldiers who have remained steadfast in ensuring the security of lives and property in Abia State is highly condemnable.”

Otti extended his condolences to the GOC 82 Division, Enugu, the Commander, 14 Brigade, Ohafia, and the Commanding Officer, 145 Battalion, Umuahia, where the men were drawn from.

He added “Please, also extend my deep condolences to the immediate families of the gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price as well as those who were injured during the attack.”

The governor recalled, “On May 30th, this year, a similar event happened at the Obikabia Junction near Aba.

“Together with your men and other security agencies, we started a manhunt for the criminals, and luckily, the masterminds have since been apprehended.

“Let me assure you that the Abia State Government will not rest until the perpetrators of this dastardly act are apprehended and dealt with accordingly.

“My administration is poised to join hands with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation to unmask those behind the attack.

“In due course, I will make contact with the immediate families of all the soldiers affected to support them as they mourn their loved ones.”

Senator Ali Ndume

Bwala should seek audience with Vice President Shettima and seek forgiveness

Outspoken Senator representing Borno South, Mohammed Ali Ndume, sees the appointment of Daniel Bwala, the newly appointed Special Adviser, Media and Public Communications to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as undeservable.

He has, therefore, advised him to “seek forgiveness” from Vice President Kashim Shettima whose emergence as Tinubu’s running mate made him leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) because he is a Muslim.

Ndume, in a statement on Saturday, also, asked Bwala to work closely with Shettima to promote the “Renewed Hope” agenda of the Tinubu’s administration.

President Tinubu had, on Thursday, appointed Bwala, former spokesperson for ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign as his Special Adviser, Media and Public Communications.

The president also appointed three others as directors-general of various agencies.

“Work with him (Shettima) closely as your second principal to promote the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda of Mr President.

“You should learn from Sunday Dare and Onanuga who are long and loyal associates of Tinubu; who always defend the policies of Mr President without being abusive and offensive.

“You should also learn from the likes of Hadiza Bala and Nuhu Ribadu (NSA) who defend and market Tinubu’s policies backed by facts and figures. Finally you should also link up with our people at the grassroots because charity begins from home.

Ndume said President Tinubu had a large heart for accommodating Bwala, one-time spokesman to his political opponent, Atiku Abubakar.

The Borno lawmaker pointed out that his appointment was a rare demonstration of large heartedness in leadership, “a quality that is difficult to find in many leaders today.”

Nigeria Airforce - NAF Operatives

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Nigerian Air Force has announced the dismantling of some major operational camps  of banditry elements in Kaduna state

The degradation  of the insurgents’ fortress, the  Service said,  is in continuation of its renewed air interdiction exercise, otherwise known as “Operation Farautar Mujiya” in the North West region .

A statement on Saturday///November 16, 2024, by the spokesperson for the air component of “Operation Fansan  Yamma”, currently battling bandits and other criminal elements in the North West, Commodore Olusola Akinboyewa, noted that the notorious bandits’ enclaves, located at Dunya  Hill and Batauna Forest all in Giwa Local Council of Kaduna State, were  dismantled on Tuesday November 12, 2024 following series of airstrikes.

According to him, the airstrikes which he described as strategic, were preceded by a robust intelligence gathering that meticulously pin-pointed high- value targets, including key logistics hubs, as well as armouries used by the bandits.

According to the spokesman, several banditry elements were killed in the process, in addition to the degradation and complete destruction of their operational weapons and other critical resources.

He informed that the airstrikes on banditry targets have been on for sometime now, leading to the successful dislocation of their operations within the zone

“Since the commencement of this intensified campaign, credible sources have confirmed that bandits are on the run, their once secure enclaves in disarray.

“In a sign of the operation’s success, multiple reports have emerged detailing the escape and liberation of kidnap victims who have managed to regain freedom amidst the chaos inflicted on their captors .

“The NAF continues to execute these precise airstrikes to incapacitate the criminal groups terrorizing the North West region and provide decisive advantage for our surface forces.

“This sustained effort not only demonstrates the Armed forces commitment to restoring peace and security ,but also provide s renewed hope to communities that have long suffered under the threat of banditry”, part of the statement reads .

Akinboyeewa further highlighted the essence of the “Operation Farautar Mujiya to include the degradation of the bandits’ capacity to effectively operate ,as well as pulling down their entrenched networks.

He expressed happiness  that the operations so far have been achieving their desired objectives.

Vote Buying, BVA Malfunctioning, Sporadic Shooting, Prevail In Ondo Gov Election

Ondo Governorship Election 2024

By Ayodele Oni

Voting has ended in the ongoing Governorship election in Ondo state with sorting of votes commenced at the various polling units.

The election commenced on time at virtually all the units with voting commenced as early as 9.00 am amidst tight security.

Reports from various parts of the state indicate that the exercise went on smoothly, except few Centres where transportation caused little delay for the officials to arrive.

Security agents were alert at the various Centres culminating in the arrest of a man with bags containing money in Akure apparently soliciting for votes to buy.

Officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested the man with two Ghana-must-go bags in Akure. He was alleged to be a suspected vote-buyer in the ongoing Ondo governorship election.

The suspect was captured with two bags of money which are suspected to be for the inducement of voters in the election.

He was arrested at Ward 4, Polling Unit 007 outside St. Stephen’s Primary School, Akure, Ondo State around 9 am on election day.

The election started this Saturday morning, November 16, 2024, with heavy security presence consisting of personnel of the DSS, the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) observed at strategic points across the state.

Armed security personnel were observed at strategic points such as the entrance into Akure, the state capital, major towns, the local governments secretariats as well as on major roads in the state.

Another report from a Presiding Officer (PO), Bakare Ronke Mary, at Unit -019, Ward-06, Obadu, Ondo stated that “It happened that a PDP Agent tear the votes cast without the consent of the APC Agent, which the PO objected to.

“The Baale was summoned and the Police officers asked what the PO wanted, which she stated that the election at the center should be canceled or the PDP Agent be removed.”

Though the PDP Agent was arrested, a few minutes later some PDP gangs/thugs showed up and beat up the presiding officers, as well as disrup the election process and destroyed all the election materials, stealing  phones except the BVAS Machine that the PO was able to escape with.

The Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) Agboola Ajayi declared that the electoral process was compromised.

He berated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for being unable to conduct an election well in just one state, citing failure of BVAS and massive vote-buying by the APC, which have gone unchecked.

He noted, however, that he is confident of victory, calling on Ondo State residents to come out to exercise their franchise without fear.

Ajayi stated this shortly after voting at Apoi Ward 11, Unit 004 at RCM Idumado Quarters Kiribo in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of the state.

He said: “The system has been compromised. It’s sad INEC can’t conduct election well in one state. The BVAS aren’t working, it took about 10 minutes to capture me.

“I think it is deliberate on the part of INEC and the REC, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola and we’ve said this several times that the woman can’t be fair.

“I have had a series of complaints from across the state, people are complaining of vote-buying. It is a very shameful exercise.

“But our people must be resolute; come out and vote. We must not give in to the shenanigans of the APC and INEC. We will surely overcome.”

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had earlier voted before 10 o’clock at his ward in Ilaje, expressing satisfaction with the entire process.

There was reported firing of gunshots by some unknown persons at Ofosun Village, an Ondo community at the boundary with Edo State.

The incident, it was learnt, caused panic, forcing people to stay indoors to avoid being hit by stray bullets.

A source in the village, identified simply as Dauda, who spoke on the phone said, “We don’t know who they are but they were firing gunshots into the air in some parts of the village since early morning. Ofosun is an Ondo village close to Benin in Edo State. No casualty, but people in the village are staying indoors.”

It was not immediately clear what could have led to the incident, but the Deputy Governorship candidate of the PDP Festus Akingbaso, while commending voters’ turnout, expressed concerns over the alleged infiltration of some villages under the Idanre Local Government Area by hoodlums.

Akingbaso, who spoke shortly after casting his vote at Imikan Ward 02, Unit 008, Idanre, commended INEC for the timely arrival of voting materials but alleged, “Information reaching me is that majority of the villages are filled with thugs allegedly brought in by the APC.

At the moment, all the villages are occupied with thugs. Villages like Ofosun, Omifunfun and Allah are occupied.

“There is a place called Igbepo where suspected thugs are in their numbers in Idanre Local Government Area. An incident happened in Ofosun where suspected thugs broke into the house of a party member to prevent him from voting. We were informed that there are plans not to allow people in the villages to vote.

“I have reported the matter to the DPO and DSS. To my expectation, the security agencies have not been able to do anything.”

Reacting to the allegation, the Ondo APC spokesperson, Mr Steve Otaloro, absolved his party of involving in any crime and demanded a thorough investigation into the allegations.

He said, “I am in the situation room of APC right now. Let me say first some foremost, the person you mentioned is the deputy governorship candidate of Agboola Ajayi of the PDP. And if you recall PDP had a press conference two days ago alleging the kind of violence that happened in that place was by APC.

“All the places he mentioned, was he on the ground in all those places? He was supposed to be at his polling unit. Even if he was called, he should have done proper diligence to be on the ground.

“They told us there was nothing like that. Voting is going on orderly, if they have any issue with that, they just want to create an issue out of nothing.

“As I speak, no member of our political party is going out to vote as a member, everybody has become electorate. Whatever violence that is happening, they should investigate it properly, but I can assure you it is not from our members.

“How will you infiltrate all those local areas, these are routes and farm settlements? Why will our members infiltrate such places? That is not true.”

#Ondo Decides: PDP Candidate, Ajayi, Alleges INEC Bias

0
Agboola Ajayi

By Akinwale Kasali

Electoral Umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has come under criticism from the Peoples Democratic Party’s Candidate in the Ondo Governorship election, Agboola Ajayi.

Ajayi accused INEC of bias, after casting his vote at Polling Unit 004, Apoi Ward 2, Kiribo, in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of the state.

The PDP candidate said that information at his disposal was that  there were delays in the commencement of voting in parts of the State.

Ajayi said it took almost 10 minutes before he could cast his vote after battling with accreditation, describing it as an attempt to frustrate voters.

He said, “The BVAS devices are not working. Although the election is peaceful to some extent, I have concerns.

“Why are security personnel stationed so close to my polling unit? They are intimidating voters. The distance between voters and military officers is uncomfortably close.”

Ajayi also alleged that the election was being compromised following the struggle with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System.

“The system has been compromised. It is sad that the INEC can’t conduct an election well in one state,” Ajayi said.
