Tax Bill: ACF Sues For Peace, Set Up Cmte

0
Arewa

The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has described the ongoing bickering and face-off  among Nigerians over the Tax Reform Bill as unnecessary, calling for calm among various groups in the country.

As its own contribution to ensuring an acceptable consensus, ACF said it has set up a committee to advise it on  the matter.

The foremost northern social-cultural group made its position known in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba on Thursday, stressing that major stakeholders in the country must reach an acceptable consensus over the issue because of its importance in having a far-reaching effects on the country at large.

Prof Tukur said the bill like any government policies must take into consideration all shades of interests in the country by putting into consideration “all concerns raised by citizens.”

Calling for support for the National Assembly, the group said contending groups and stakeholders in the country must make their positions known to the legislature, cautioning all and sundry to be civilize rather than resorting to cheap blackmail to achieve their aim over the controversial bill, adding that “nobody has monopoly” of knowledge.

ACF said, “The proposed bills will have far-reaching implications for every citizen and every part of the country.

“Debates over bills are integral to the public policy process in any democracy. Reforms aimed at addressing policy shortcomings must consider all concerns raised by citizens.”

Commending the Senate’s decision to pause and conduct broader consultations, the Forum called on stakeholders to collaborate with the relevant Senate Committee to ensure the legislation equitably serves all regions of the country.

The group “urge all interest groups to view debates on the bills as essential contributions to the legislative process and not as opportunities for blackmail or intimidation.

“No one has a monopoly on knowledge or wisdom. We must engage in constructive debates to ensure the legislative process benefits the entire country, not specific interests.”

The magazine reports that the controversial bill was sent to the National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, trailed by serious divisions among Nigerians who either supported or ventilated their opposition to the bill.

The major opposition to the bill has been coming from the northern parts of the country, where opinion leaders from the region insist that their people will be short-changed in the new regime if the bill becomes law. They have called for more consultations going forward.

Ooni and Buhari

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his confidence in the unity of the country saying his belief in a united Nigeria is ‘unshakable’.

The former leader who left power last year made the remark when he received the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi in his Daura home on Thursday.

The traditional ruler who spoke to journalists after the visit to Buhari and the Emir of Daura said he came to check on him to know his health condition.

Oba Ogunwusi said he major objective for meeting Buhari is to discuss issues affecting the country, with the aim of moving her forward.

His remark was contained in a statement issued by his palace and shared with journalists in Ile-Ife.

Ooni said, “I can happily tell the whole of Nigeria that he’s living super well. When you see him, you will be completely shocked at how relaxed and vibrant he is, radiating good spirits. He looks remarkably younger than his age, and God has truly blessed him with renewed good health.”

The first class traditional ruler said the former leader tried his best for the country, contrary to the wide spread suggestions that he did not do well as Nigeria’s Commander-in-chief, describing him as humble and approachable, noting that no leader can totally satisfy the yearnings of Nigerians.

Buhar, he said, did his best by “guiding the nation on its path.”

The statement read in part, “This meeting was not just a casual encounter but a significant diplomatic engagement underscoring the need for dialogue between leaders across the country. This historic meeting is a testament to Ooni Ogunwusi’s unwavering commitment to promoting national unity and nurturing constructive relationships within Nigeria’s leadership framework.

“During his visit, the monarch expressed the fundamental reason for his trip—to check on President Buhari’s well-being after more than a year since his departure from the presidency. He emphasised the importance of maintaining strong connections with Nigeria’s leaders, believing that these relationships are essential for cultivating a more unified nation, capable of fostering growth and prosperity for all its citizens.”

Ooni was accompanied on the visit by some traditional rulers from the South west including, the Oore of Otun Ekiti, Ajero of Ijero Kingdom, Oba Joseph Adewole; Oba Adekunle Adeayo Adeagbo; and the Alara of Ilara Epe,Lagos State, Oba Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, amongst others.

Prof Mahmood Yakubu

By Ayodele Oni

Possession of Permanent Voters Cards, (PVC) by Nigerians may no longer be a precondition for voting during elections in the country.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has put forward a proposal to utilise computer-generated voting slips for individuals lacking Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in upcoming elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja, during a quarterly consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

Yakubu added that PVCs should no longer be the sole requirement for voting, especially with the advent of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

He stated, “The use of the Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVC) as the exclusive means of identification for voter accreditation on Election Day must be reconsidered.”

He indicated that the commission has conducted extensive consultations with its officials and key stakeholders, resulting in 142 recommendations for improvement.

“We have engaged broadly with our officials and consulted all major stakeholders. We have also released a comprehensive 524-page report on the 2023 general election.

“These recommendations address various facets of the electoral process, including voter management, voter education, and election technology.”

Yakubu noted that 86 of these recommendations require administrative action from the commission, while 48 necessitate intervention from other stakeholders, such as security agencies and political parties.

Emir Sanusi Dares Security, Vows To Escort District Head To Bichi

Emir Sanusi holds Durbar In Kano

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The factional Emir of Kano Emirate Council, Muhammad Sanusi, on Wednesday December 12,2024, described as a temporary set back and distraction, the security blockade on his Palace that also aborted the planned installation of a District Head for Bichi Local Government Area of Kano.

This is just as he vowed to go  ahead with the installation on a date to be announced soon.

The Source reports that ,heavily armed security operatives had early morning last Friday December ,6 ,barricaded the Kofar Kudu City palace of the  Kano state Government- backed Emir Sanusi.

The security condone ,which restricted movements in and out of the palace ,was said to be a proactive measure to stop the Emir who had scheduled to escort his appointee for the Bichi District Head position Munir Nasir to the area to formally assume duty.

But owing to security reports  warning of a possible breakdown of law and order ,during the said visit ,security agencies led by the police had to halt the event.

This Magazine authoritatively gathered  that ,an overwhelming majority of the people of Bichi  are highly incensed over the attempt by Emir Sanusi and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to downgrade Bichi from a full blown Emirate to a mere district.

They were said to have put ,every machinery in motion ,to make the visit a very bitter one for the Emir.

For one ,Bichi was one of the hitherto four Emirates which Emirs were on Thursday ,May 23 ,2024 ,unceremoniously deposed to pave the way for the second coming of Emir Sanusi ,who was dethroned in 2020 as the 14th Emir of Kano.

Instructively, the other three affected Emirates namely Gaya, Rano and Karaye have all been given second class Emirs, after their first class traditional rulers were deposed along side that of Bichi.

Not a few a people of Bichi ,are amused by the decision to single the area for downgrading to the status of a District.

But on a solidarity visit by  some  traditional rulers and religious leaders from Bichi to his palace on Wednesday, Emir Sanusi assured the people that they will soon have their District Head.

According to him ,having turbaned the District Head at his palace ,nothing will stop him from resuming duty.

” I assure you that another day will be fixed and your District Head will surely be brought to you and everything will take place peacefully.

What happened ( security condone) was only a distraction. We still don’t know why it happened and those involved have not disclosed the reason why they. did it .However ,this will not stop anything.

Go back and inform the public to continue to remain peaceful and prayerful .Whatever ,the situation ,peace and prayers will surely take us to the of the tunnel” Sanusi stated.

The leader of the delegation of Bichi traditional rulers and religious leaders ,the Executive chairman of the Local Council Hamza Sule ,while expressing their disappointment with events that led to the suspension of the installation of the District Head , however pledged the loyalty of the people to the Emir.

He informed that ,the people were fully ready and in high spirit for the visit ,only to be told about what happened.

He explained that their visit to the palace was also to show solidarity and pledge their loyalty.

OPINION: Why Ghana’s Election Matters

0
Azu Ishiekwene
Mr Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

The news from Ghana was not how John Dramani Mahama’s opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC),defeated Nana Akufo-Addo’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The news was how Akufo-Addo managed to survive a full second term. Towards the end of his first and formuch of his second term in office, he governed with his head on the block, just waiting for the axe to fall.

His party’s loss in the December 7 presidential election was a defeat foretold. It was barely two years after Akufo-Addo assumed office in 2017 when doubts about his party’s viability began to surface. It shouldn’t have been so.

His predecessor, the John Atta-Mills/Dramani government, made such a mess. Apart from divisions within the NDC, it was further weakened by a series of serious corruption scandals, the most remarkable of which were the government’sinvolvement in the transfer of $11 million and £9 million paid by a party financier and a litany of failed promises.

Dramani’s loss to Akufo-Addo relieved the loser, who only managed to finish Atta-Mills’ term after the latter died in office.

Hero to zero

As I wrote in a 2022 article, Akufo-Addo was off to a flying start. From New York to Beijing and Paris, he became the new face of the African Renaissance, saying the right things wherever he went on the global stage and raising a $3 billion Eurobond for Ghana’s restructuring that overperformed its order book by $21 billion.

Despite his best efforts, COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine War put Ghana in a tight spot. The country’s predicament was worsened by poor fiscal discipline, unstable commodity prices, and a capitulation to pressure from Labour to increase public sector wages to unsustainable levels.

Akufo-Addo’s party paid upfront for the country’s misery. Multiple protests rocked the streets of Accra and other major capitals, and voters couldn’t wait to bury the NPP with any remaining claims of good deeds at the polls.

Beyond elections

However, the election meant something more for the subregion than about angry and tired Ghanaian voters removing an incumbent government.

In the last four years, the subregion has been plagued by military coups reminiscent of a bygone era. Mali, Niger, Guinea and Burkina Faso have formed an arc of DelinquentStates, with three of them sundering the decades-old Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) by creating a parallel Alliance for Sahelian States in defiance of the regional powerhouses and even the AU.

Successful elections and transitions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Nigeria, and Ghana have offered a counter-narrative. It’s all the more heartening that the ruling party’s candidate in the election, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, did not wait for the official result before conceding defeat, reinforcing a trendstarted in 2015 by Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Job for powerhouses

The successful transition is good news for regional economic stability. Although the four break-away states constitute half of the ECOWAS area and only seven percent of economic activity within the zone, the economic sanctions imposed on them by the subregional group impacted swathes of the primarily poor populations across the region, where informal cross-border trade, mainly in food, make up about 30 percent of regional trade.

Stable transitions in Ghana and Nigeria, the region’s two economic powerhouses, would allow ECOWAS to reassess its options – a significant point in the agenda as the sub-regional group meets in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, this week.

Delinquent Four on the agenda

Should ECOWAS continue to engage the breakaway states in its efforts at faster regional integration, especially in light of the fragile relations between these states and France, in an era where Russia and China are lurking and the US is self-absorbed? Or has the time come for the group to chart a new course and accept a future without the four breakaway states?

That would not only be an economic decision. It also carries significance for subregional security. Burkina Faso and Mali are out of the ECOWAS multinational joint task force. Protracted or failed elections in Ghana would have further weakened the group’s crisis response mechanismat a time when Nigerian military authorities aregrappling with new security threats from Lakurawa, an ISIS franchise.

It’s unlikely that the new government in Accra, on the watch of Mahama, one of the mediators during the post-election dispute in The Gambia in 2016, would depart significantly from the leading role that Ghana has played in subregional peace support operations, which goes back to its role in ECOMOG in the 1990s.

Go to court!

At a more granular level, there are other reasons why Ghana’s election matters, especially in relations between Abuja and Accra. Already, the commentariat in Nigeria is holding up Ghana’s election as a model for the election management body in Nigeria. Apart from former President Jonathan’s pre-emptive concession of defeat nine years ago, Nigeria is perhaps the continent’s capital of disputed elections.

Of course, Nigeria’s election management body needs to raise its game.Fundamentally, however, the chaos reflects the winner-takes-all mentality among Nigeria’s political elite, which has increasingly seduced the courts to decide elections. Often, when Nigerian politicians taunt their opponent to “go to court” after an election, they are confident of a favourable outcome.

Ghanaian Jollof

Nigerians also envy Ghana’s rise as the new destination for big business, a prospect that could only have been enhanced by the smooth election. Despite Ghana’s economic crisis, Nigeria has lost several fintech and manufacturing companies to its western neighbour in the last three years.

Guinness, for example, has moved its operational headquarters to Accra, while others, such as Afprint, President Industries and Aswani – all in the textile sector – are reportedly contemplating relocation. Because of Ghana’s stable and predictable political environment, tech giants, including Google, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook, have not hidden their preference for it despite Nigeria’s significant market size.

Whether, apart from its business attraction, Ghanaian jollof would also best Nigeria’s jollof in the unending cuisine war between both countries in the next four years under Mahama remains to be seen.

Voters’ psyche

If there’s anything that the outcome of Ghana’s election teaches, even beyond the subregion, it is that voters don’t forgive politicians who leave them feeling worse off. You may have saved them from COVID-19, the fallouts of global conflicts elsewhere, or the headwinds afterwards. However, what weighs on their mind when they cast their ballot is whether they’re feeling better off today.

That was why Rishi Sunak lost to Keir Starmer in Britain, and Vice President Kamala Harris lost to Donald Trump in the US. It was also why Akufo-Addo survived his second term by the skin of his teeth but failed to hand over the baton to his deputy in Ghana.

Osun: FG Stops Relocation Of Airport To Ede

Ademola Adeleke - Osun State Governor
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State.

By Akinwale Kasali

Political observers says suspension politically motivated

The proposed plan of laying the Osun State International Airport Foundation in Ede, Osun State by Governor Ademola Adeleke has been dashed by the Federal Government.

The Federal Government has ordered the suspension of the relocation of the Osun State International Airport project from Ido-Osun to Ede, following protests and growing tensions.

Following the announcement of relocation of the proposed Osun State International Airport from Ido Osun to Ede, the hometown of the Governor, this generated controversy, as some protests trailed the proposal.

Wading into the issue, the Federal Government  quashed the plan of Governor Adeleke of laying the foundation for the new airport in Ede scheduled for December 16, 2024.

The event was expected to include high-profile dignitaries, including the Ministers of Works and Aviation, David Umahi and Festus Keyamo.

However, the proposal sparked widespread protests, especially from the Ido-Osun community, who viewed the move as biased and driven by personal interest rather than public good.

Critics argue that the relocation would unfairly benefit Ede while disregarding Ido-Osun where the airport project was initially planned.

The decision to move the airport is unjust and undemocratic,” said one protester in Ido-Osun. “It shows that the government is more focused on political gains than on the welfare of the people.”

Though the Peoples Democratic Party- led Osun State government, on the other hand, has defended the relocation.

Officials pointed to the land encroachment issues at the Ido-Osun site, along with the presence of dangerous gullies and an insufficient runway, as reasons for the shift.

Despite these claims, the controversy has not died down, and the protests have only grown louder in recent weeks.

In a significant development, the Federal Ministry of Aviation intervened in the situation.

A letter dated December 6, 2024, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Emmanuel D. Meribole, instructed the state government to suspend the project indefinitely.

The letter called for the suspension of the foundation-laying ceremony until the disputes surrounding the airport project are resolved.

The letter read: “We respectfully request Your Excellency to suspend the foundation-laying ceremony of the Osun State International Airport until the issues regarding the petitions over the existing airstrip/airport are resolved.”

The letter further stated that the airstrip in Ido-Osun is a Federal project, included in the Ministry’s 2024 budget. The Federal Government has expressed concerns that moving forward with the new airport site in Ede could lead to unnecessary duplication of efforts and wasteful spending.

It also highlighted petitions that have been submitted, questioning the need for a new site when funds have already been allocated for the current airstrip.

“The federal government is mandated to ensure judicious use of funds to curtail wastage of resources,” the letter stated.

“As this Airstrip Project is a collaboration between state and federal governments, we must be in sync before the project takes off.”

The letter concluded by urging Adeleke to reschedule the foundation-laying ceremony until a mutual agreement could be reached.

This intervention has dealt a significant blow to Governor Adeleke’s plans, which were already facing mounting criticism from local communities and political opponents.

“We are committed to a transparent and inclusive process, and we expect the state government to resolve these issues with all stakeholders involved,” said a source from the Federal Ministry of Aviation.

The tension surrounding the Osun airport project highlights a growing divide between state and federal authorities, as well as local communities. While the state government is keen to boost its infrastructure and develop the region, critics argue that the current controversy is more about political favoritism than genuine development.

As protests continue in Ido-Osun, the people there are demanding that the federal government step in to protect their interests.

“This is not just about the airport,” said another local resident. “It’s about fairness. If the state government truly cares about all of us, they would not ignore our concerns.”

Governor Adeleke has yet to publicly respond to the suspension order from the federal government. However, the state’s Ministry of Works has stated that discussions with federal officials are ongoing, and that they hope to reach a resolution soon.

The outcome of this dispute could have major implications for future infrastructure projects in the state, as it underscores the complex relationship between state and federal governments in Nigeria.

The federal government’s decision to pause the project also raises important questions about accountability in the management of public resources.

Some political observers are of the opinion that the decision of the FG to suspend the project is because Governor Adeleke is from the opposition Party.

It was alleged that the past administration of Governor Gboyega Oyetola had set the roadmap for the building of the Osun State International Airport at Ido-Osun, and could have lay the foundation at it been he was re-elected as Governor, but, since the PDP came on board, it would be unwise to relocate the project to his home town in Ede, citing that the suspension by the FG was political motivated.

Some other political observers argued that it was a plot by the APC led FG to buy time and work tirelessly for Oyetola to come back as Governor in 2026, and defeat the incumbent, Adeleke, at the polls, thereafter, he would kick-start the project.

Ekiti state Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, on Wednesday declared open the fourth Trade Fair in Ado Ekiti with a promise to devise means to reignite the state’s old glory in agriculture and education that earned it being classified as the Food Basket of the Southwest and Fountain of Knowledge.

Oyebanji described farming, skill acquisition, small and medium scale enterprises, as well as  education, as magic wands being deployed by government to collaborate, network and open a vista of opportunities for the people at the grassroots for businesses to grow exponentially.

The 2024 trade fair holding at the Trade Fair Complex in Ado Ekiti attracted  investors, farmers, artisans, manufacturers, captains of industries and entrepreneurs to showcase their products to the world, with many of products being sold at  discounted prices.

The governor, represented by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs)  Monisade Afuye, observed that Ekiti made remarkable headways in farming and education in time past, promising to overhaul the sectors to restore the lost glory through huge investment in these thematic areas of the economy.

He assured that his administration would continue to engage captains of industries locally and internationally to make Ekiti the first destination of choice in investment to diversify the economy away from the monolithic civil service structure.

“These we are going achieve by providing enabling environment that supports entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship in order to take Ekiti to new heights in terms of viable economy among the comity of states in Nigeria and Africa as whole.

“Partnering critical stakeholders was  part of measures to redefine Ekiti economy through partnership, innovation and collaboration with necessary stakeholders in industry, commerce and agriculture.

“In actual fact, this was part of my administration’s commitment to boost the state economy and achieve the mantra of my government, which is shared Prosperity for all the citizens”.

Lending credence to Oyebanji’s position, the Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperative, Mrs Tayo Adeola,

said the programme was designed to bring about economy growth by attracting investors and showcase Ekiti to the whole world with a promise that the trade fair would now be holding on annual basis.
